The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, finishing with identical 2-1 records in 2007. Tennessee State took the trophy home thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a block extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Tigers repeated as champions in 2008, winning all three of its Sgt. York games. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York’s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York’s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. SGT. He was named head coach on December 18, 2009 to guide the TSU program. He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator during the 2009 season. Reed experienced immediate success as a head coach, leading the Tigers to a win in his debut game, 27-14, over Alabama A&M on Sept. 4, 2010 in the John Merritt Classic. He also broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida A&M, downing the Rattlers, 29-18, in the Atlanta Classic. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American. The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed’s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts. Big Blue continued its success in 2012 by rattling off seven straight victories to open the season. The Tigers finished the year with an 8-3 record, its best since 2001. The performance earned TSU HBCU Program of the Year honors by HBCU Huddle. Several players earned postseason accolades including running back Trabis Ward who was named to the College Sports All-American Team after running for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three more Tigers were Sheridan All-Americans including Sherman Carter who signed an NFL deal with fellow offensive lineman Rogers Gaines following suit. Reed turned in his finest season to date in 2013, as the Tigers finished 10-4 and won a FCS Playoff Game for the first time since 1986. It capped an impressive run in which Reed improved his club’s win total by at least two in each of his first four campaigns. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team’s shutout win over Butler in the Jeff Parker Asst. Head Coach Offensive Coord./ Quarterbacks Osita Alaribe Defensive Coord./ Defensive Tackles Ed Sanders Special Teams Coord./ Safeties first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in postseason play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league’s all-conference teams at season’s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft. Last season, Reed’s defense ranked inside the top-10 for the third straight season. Middle linebacker Nick Thrasher tallied 128 stops on the season, which was sixth-most in a single-season in school history and the highest total for a Tiger since 1991. Thrasher also moved up to second-place in tackles in the TSU record book over the course of the season, finishing with 358. Quarterback Mike German threw for 2,846 yards on the year, helping him break the 34 year old school-mark with 8,664 career yards. Reed has coached a total of 22 All-Americans and 49 All-OVC Players in his five seasons as a head coach and has staked a 32-27 record. Baptist College (00-03) in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 season. The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their conference in scoring defense and third in rushing defense. The team did not allow points in either the first or third periods through the first eight games in 2002. Reed is the son of Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America offensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played professionally for the Washington Redskins. Reed is the university’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes representative and in 2009 he participated in the NCAA Football Coaches Academy. He and his wife, Tamika, are the parents of four children, Terry, Takara, Briah, and Marcel. THE ROD REED FILE He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total defense. He has also coached All-America and professional player, Jamie Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars). Following completion of his bachelor’s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M (Linebackers, 2001), Bethune-Cookman University (Linebackers, 92-96), and Seabreeze High School (DC, 96-00) in Daytona Beach, Fla. A crowd of 22,455 showed up to Nissan Stadium for the Sunday night game. MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers opened both halves with a flurry as they secured a 35-25 win over Jackson State in the 26th Southern Heritage Classic. A crowd of 48,335, largest classic crowd since 2008, witnessed the fourth consecutive win for Tennessee State over JSU. Tennessee State (1-0) exploded on both sides of the ball as they outscored the Hornets 21-0 in the final stanza. The defense helped by forcing four fumbles and a three-and-out, giving the offense opportunities and great field position. Tennessee State received the ball after winning the coin toss. O’Shay Ackerman-Carter wasted little time to team up with Patrick Smith on a 64-yard scoring play on the second play from scrimmage for a 7-0 lead 53 second into the game. From the TSU 36, Ackerman-Carter faked a hand-off and dumped a pass over the middle to Smith who then outraced the defense to the end zone. Nissan Stadium (22,455) • Nashville, Tenn. 1 2 3 4 Final Alabama State 7070 14 Tennessee State 03021 24 The Tigers broke through for its first touchdown of the game on the third play of the fourth quarter as O’Shay Ackerman-Carter hit Patrick Smith across the middle for a 19-yard touchdown. It was the first career touchdown for both players and brought TSU to within four points of ASU at 14-10 with 14:22 remaining in the contest. The Tigers would get the ball back less than a minute later as defensive end Latrelle Lee forced the first fumble of the quarter. TSU would need just three plays to travel 36 yards and took its first lead of the game 17-14 on a 12-yard run by running back Tom Smith. The Big Blue defense needed just 1:32 to hand the ball back over to the offense as safety Javon Brandon caused another turnover. The Tigers ate some time off the clock as they extended the lead to 24-14 as running back Telvin Hooks crossed the goal line from five yards out with 6:15 remaining on the clock. On TSU's second possession, Ackerman-Carter would injury himself after scrambling for seven yards. The redshirt-quarterback would stay down and exited the game. Junior Ronald Butler entered the game, for the second consecutive year, due to an injury. In last year’s classic, Butler appeared after Mike German went out in the second quarter. On his first play, a third and 18, Butler hit Patrick Smith down the left seam for 50 yards to the JSU 22. After a personal foul moved the ball to the seven, Telvin Hooks rushed to the end zone one play later for a 14-6 lead. Ackerman-Carter would return and lead a scoring drive with seven seconds remaining before halftime. The Jacksonville, Fla. native found a leaping Joshawn Bowens from 10-yards out to make the score 21-9. The Tigers trailed at halftime 7-3, despite controlling the ball for 21 minutes opposed to two seconds shy of nine minutes for ASU. During that time the Tigers ran 46 plays for 182 yards, while holding the Hornets to 142 yards on 21 plays. In the second half, Patrick Smith made his presence felt on special teams. After a stop by the defense on the first series of the second half, Smith received a punt and returned it 28 yards to the Tigers 15. TSU again put the ball in the hands of Hooks who carried three straight times with the final being a two-yard scoring run. The Big Blue increased its lead to 28-9 with 12:25 remaining in the third quarter. In the third quarter, Duhart found Lawrence Oliver over the middle for a 52-yard pass play. Two plays later, the Hornets would find the end zone as Duhart called his own number from a yard out to extend the ASU lead to 14-3. With the score 28-12, Ackerman-Carter connected on his third touchdown of the night as he hit Chris Sanders-McCollum. The junior wide out broke free from a tackle and scampered down the left sideline for a 64-yard touchdown and a 35-12 lead. On the game, the Hornets totaled 314 yards, but amassed 134 on the two big pass plays. The Tiger defense would hold ASU to 180 yards on 54 plays for the remainder of the game, good for 3.6 yards per play. JSU claimed a 48-13 win on Saturday afternoon in front of 23,413, the largest crowd in Burgess-Snow Field history. The top ranked Gamecocks (2-1) took control of the game as they outgained TSU (2-1) 576 -208. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Tigers took advantage of good field position to charge back and steal a win over rival Florida A&M on Saturday night. Tennessee State improved to 3-1 with a 30-14 win over the FAMU (0-4) in front of 18,020 at Bragg Memorial Stadium. After an Eli Jenkins 30-yard run to the TSU 25, the Big Blue forced a stop three plays later to force a 44-yard field goal attempt, which missed wide right. On the second play from scrimmage in the second half, the Rattlers' Carson Royal found Kareem Smith for a 46 yard touchdown toss giving FAMU a 14-7 lead with 12:05 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The score seemed to motivate the Tigers, as they would respond in a big way, by scoring 23 unanswered points. On JSU’s second series, the defense stepped up again as Ezra Robinson jumped a Jenkins pass at the TSU 17 and returned 83 yards for an apparent touchdown. But two unsportsmanlike penalties nullified the score. The tide turned when punter Austin Rowley pinned the Rattlers with a 48 yard punt to the 10. The defense held tight and forced FAMU to punt from their own end zone, creating strong field position for the Tigers. On the ensuing drive, Ronald Butler entered the game due to an injury to O’Shay Ackerman-Carter, for the second consecutive week. The redshirt-freshman exited as he took a blow to the head, which resulted in a targeting infraction versus JSU. TSU needed six plays to move 47 yards for the game tying score. On third and 15 from the FAMU 38, Ronald Butler launched a ball towards Dantwaun O’Neal, but a Rattler defender was there to break up the play. The ball bounded in a fortunate way for the Tigers and into the hands of Patrick Smith in the end zone. The offense was stymied and was forced to punt, disallowing TSU an opportunity to take advantage of the turnover. Rowley came through again on his next attempt. The freshman recorded his shortest punt of the evening at 37 yards, but that's all that he would need for the ball to be downed at the one yard line. Three plays later, Chris Collins and Latrelle Lee broke through the offensive line and hit the FAMU running back behind the goal line to record a safety, gaving the Tigers its first lead of the game, 16-14. Jacksonville State would breakthrough and scored on the final three possessions to take a 21-0 lead into the break. JSU would add to the advantage with a field goal to open the second half. The Tigers offense tried to respond in the second half as they attacked the secondary on its first play of the final 30 minutes. Butler went deep and found Patrick Smith wide open down the right sideline. The wide out outraced the Gamecock defenders for an 84-yard touchdown. The play is the sixth longest passing play in school history, just behind an 85-yard pass play from Leon Murray to Corey Sullivan versus Florida A&M on Sept. 26, 1998. The touchdown is the fourth of the season for Smith and it is the third play of the season 50-yards or more. The defense forced a three-and-out on the next JSU series allowing the TSU offense to find its rhythm. Butler would go to work as he found a new favorite in Isaiah Jeffries-Freeman. On a third and four from the JSU 45, Butler hit Jeffries-Freeman for 22 yards and a first down. The duo would team up again on the very next play, this time for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The play would bring the Tigers back within 11 as the made the score 24-13. Box Score (Final) TSU could not get any closer as the Gamecocks reeled off 24 consecutive points. After the safety, TSU received the ball and proceeded to attack the Florida A&M defense. Butler started the drive by hitting Smith for 10 yards, setting up the longest run of the game, a 27 yard blast up the middle by Telvin Hooks. With the Tigers at the Rattlers' 32, Butler went back to Smith for his second touchdown of the game. Smith nothced his fifth scoring reception of the season as the Tigers extended its lead to 23-14. Ezra Robinson ended FAMU's hopes with a pass break up on 4th and 9 with 6:40 remaining to give the ball back to the Tiger offense. TSU sealed the game as they held onto the ball for six minutes as they picked up an insurance touchdown. Erick Evans capped off the drive with a one yard run to produce the final outcome, 30-14. Smith led all receivers in the game with eight catches for 157 yards and two scores. Ronald Butler finished his homecoming with 238 yards on 17 completions and 30 attempts.
