2009 sees Marmot celebrate its birthday.
The biggest Marmot news for Spring 2009: On the 10th anniversary of the
launch of the legendary Precip Jacket, Marmot has once again innovated
the rainwear category with the launch of its new Membrain® Strata™.
For 35 years, Marmot has developed top quality functional
clothing and equipment for mountaineers, outdoor
enthusiasts and extreme alpinists.
For years, top athletes like Stefan Glowacz have depended on the
quality and performance of Marmot products. Today more than ever,
Marmot is focused on sustainability and the environment.
For ten years, Precip’s original silk protein based coatings have provided bestin-class performance. Now, Marmot presents 15 new styles in MemBrain®
Strata™: a lamination that provides higher breathability, higher
waterproofness, lighter weight, a drier touch and greater comfort as
standard.

In 1975, just one year after the company was founded,
Hollywood called on them to produce down jackets for a Clint
Eastwood film.
The following year, 1976, saw their first collaboration with
Gore, making Marmot the longest standing outdoor trade partner
of the legendary membrane manufacturer.
Garments made from MemBrain® Strata™ are the lightest most breathable in
their category. The exclusive .5-Layer print on the inside protects the
laminate and is much lighter than a 3-layer or lined construction.

Marmot constantly works to fulfil our company’s goal and standards of
sustainability. Performance and Eco Casual Sportswear include 60 new
styles with eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo
and hemp. The performance line in addition to focusing on lightweight,
compactness and breathability, also offers materials with a cotton-like-hand,
that dry fast and provide a high level of UV protection. This includes the use of
many Up-cycled fabrics.

in order to check out the latest hot spots in Spain.

And as it is of course much easier to get your bearings with friends who know
one another, for 10 days we adopted the motto “Follow the green car!”, which
was a reference to the colour of Andrea’s car.
Spain boasts a seemingly endless array of rocky potential, with all sorts of
different rocks. These include granite, limestone, conglomerate, sandstone,
…
And these different types of rock are often not very far apart.
Expeditions are usually long compared to many other regions and you therefore
need a good level of stamina, which was initially a real issue for our boys.
But they were not put off; after all they do have many years of experience and
they are well aware that you need to adjust to new conditions every time you
travel to new territory.
And after a number of days of climbing, there were then plenty of successes.
For example, they climbed routes from the lower 10 degrees to the lower
11 degrees, exceptionally safely “Los últimos vampiros hippies” 8c which
Markus Bock was able to repeat.
But Spain was not just worth visiting for its rocks. We were also tempted to
make the trip by the opportunity to escape the miserable November weather
and enjoy all the culinary delights of the country.
AND: We are sure to return!

Marmot’s own lightweight waterproof/ breathable
technology. A lamination technology that rates a whopping
20,000 mm in waterproof performance and 20,000
g/m2/24h in breathability. Requiring neither lining nor
3-layer construction like many similar lamination processes,
MemBrain® Strata™ products are by far the lightest, most
breathable garments in their categories.

Marmot’s proprietary 2.5 layer lamination uses very small
non-organic particles mixed with Marmot MemBrain®
that protects the membrane from direct abrasion and creates
a very dry touch.
The back print pattern is carefully designed to achieve the
maximum durability and breathability. Abrasion tests rate 4-5
times better than regular MemBrain® (which is why regular
MemBrain, as well as all 2-layer laminates require a separate
lining).
Compared to 2.5 layer coatings in the market, our 2.5
layer lamination is about 100% more breathable. In
addition, laminated stretch fabrics stretch more and have a
softer hand than 2.5 layer coated fabrics.

technology: a microporous polyurethane
that is impregnated with silicon dioxide

Kayaking through Kyrgyzstan
“Wherever there are high mountains there is bound to be white water,” thought the eight intrepid canoeists who later
set off for faraway Kyrgyzstan, where they hoped to explore new rivers in their kayaks.
It took a great deal of effort to find what little information about the country’s rivers
is actually available. This meant that they had to rely on what they were told by the
locals as well as their own intuition most of the time.
The team first got the feel of things by paddling their way along two smaller rivers.
They then headed to the north of Lake Issyk Kul in a “Ural” military truck which was
about 30 years old.
The friends spent three days paddling through category-five white water with rapids
and eroded rocks. After spending between five and eight hours in the water each
day, they would put their tents up in the evening and then crawl into their sleeping
bags exhausted.
They then continued on to the River Naryn. On this occasion, they set off from a
height of 3,500 metres amid heavy driving snow.
From there, they paddled through stunning landscapes with a remarkable sparse
beauty. They encountered a variety of terrain – sometimes gentle, at other times
extremely difficult.
They then headed back to civilisation in the “Ural”.
After seeing and experiencing so many impressive things, those who took part in
the expedition are already on the lookout for new and undiscovered destinations...
