3 I Arosa WINTER SEASON 2014/15
Arosa Lenzerheide: Be a guest at friends‘ house.
Arosa continues writing history today, while Swiss Tourism looks at its glorious past with
the motto for this year «150 years of winter sports». We carry on with our adventure of
the ski area connection. A project of the century that became reality last winter. The connecting cable car named «Urdenbahn» will resume its operation right at the start of this
year’s winter season on 29. November 2014. During this second year of operation, the
connecting ski areas of Arosa Lenzerheide present attractive packages that entice to
discover what the two united winter sports paradises have to offer. Heidi and Gigi look
forward to welcoming you to an entertaining stay this winter; a winter that includes
events that can be attended from both sides of the valleys, family offers, sports highlights, fun, enjoyment, relaxation and much more. Help us to continue writing the history of Swiss tourism, plunge into our new winter sports area Arosa Lenzerheide and become a little bit like LenzerHEIDI and GIGI of Arosa.
We wish you unforgettable winter days in Arosa!
Full steam ahead –

Swiss Tourism.
150 years of winter sports
in Switzerland.
Everything started with a bet by the hoteliers in Badrutt. The mountain village managed
to attract its longstanding English summer guests to come for a winter holiday through
a bet – and the hoteliers succeeded! Similarly, the summer season has also been the
starting point for Arosa’s tourism industry in the form of health resorts. Guests started
to discover the holiday village at the end of the Schanfigg valley for their winter vacation after the first ski lift was built in 1938. As the winter tourism started to flourish, the
construction of the road and the railway tracks between Chur and Arosa were being
built. Within just a few years, Arosa saw the development of cable cars, roads and railway tracks – and history continues to write itself, read all about it in the following
pages.

From nostalgia to
modern times.
Ski area connection
Arosa Lenzerheide.
Arosa continues writing history. A new milestone has been added to the tourism history
of Arosa on 18. January 2014, the ski area connection Arosa Lenzerheide was inaugurated and the Urdenbahn cable car started its operation. The idea to span a connection
across the 1.2 km short Urdentäli and to unify the two winter sports destinations Arosa
and Lenzerheide had been around for 40 years. The project has finally been completed
in only 8 months and the two elegant cable cars will also be ready at the start of this
year’s winter season to transport our guests from the Arosa Hörnli to the Urdenfürggli
in Lenzerheide and back. 225 km of pistes in two valleys with three sun-facing mountains – sheer unlimited winter sports enjoyment under the beaming mountain sun!

Cultural Archive of Arosa.
A look into the past.
150 years ago, Switzerland was «discovered» as a winter sports
destination. In the canton of Graubünden ski lifts appeared
everywhere and sanatoriums had been transformed to hotels.
Many pictures in the cultural archive of Arosa feature the first
attempts to ski and other eventful moments on the mountain.
Check out how people skied on wooden planks in elegant winter
clothes or even in bathing suits.

A laugh echoes
across the Arosa mountain.
11 days of snow and comedy – the Arosa Comedy Festival has
been humoring guests for more than 20 years. Comedians from
Switzerland and abroad perform in the legendary tent at the
Tschuggen Hut and on three small stages in the village;
warming the winter nights with hearty laughs.

As far as
the eye can see.
Diverse winter
sports joy.
There is plenty to do off the pistes in Arosa. The 60 km
winter hiking trails, the open-air ice rink or the 30 km
cross-country skiing trails provide fun alternatives to skiing.
The hills that host the golf course during the summer are
prepared with classic and skating cross-country skiing trails in
the winter; ready for the fun!

Top Events.
Entertainment at top level.
Do you sometimes wish you could just sit down and
watch instead of racing down the pistes? Many events
during the winter in Arosa provide for diverse
entertainment during your stay and invite you to cheer
on and celebrate. And if you pay close attention you
may even spot a world star footballer, skier or famous
comedian on the pistes...

Ski school inclusive.
As easy as anything.
INTERVIEW WITH ERNST HEFTI
MANAGER OF ABC SNOW SPORTS SCHOOL AROSA
What is a typical work day for you?
First of all, we need to check the general weather and snow situation along with the current bookings
before we allocate ski instructors for the day. Once all guests have found their respective instructors, we
either go on the pistes or do administrative work such as emails, letters, facebook, internet, etc.
What does the offer «Ski School Inclusive» mean for you and your team?
Guests highly appreciate the offer and our team constantly receives compliments with regards to the
offer. We have noticed that there are significantly more children who come skiing now compared to
before.
What is your personal insider tip in the winter in Arosa?
Needless to say, it is the ski area connection between Arosa and Lenzerheid. I have been waiting for
this connection for 30 years. The new ski area offers 225 km of pistes to enjoy and for every guest to
experience «Pure Natur».
INTERVIEW WITH NOLDI HEIZ
MANAGER OF THE SWISS SKI AND SNOWBOARD SCHOOL AROSA
What is your favorite part of your job? What are your biggest challenges on your job?
I love the contact with people and I am fond of working in a big team. The busiest moments are the most
exciting ones for me. In addition to the human interaction, I enjoy looking for answers to big and small
problems. One of the biggest challenges we face in our ski school is certainly the highly fluctuating
demand pattern. We must deal with over 900 children in one week and just 100 kids in the following
week. Hence, our business requires a strong commitment and flexibility.
To what extent has the campaign «Ski School Inclusive» changed your job?
It has become easier to plan ahead. Since the introduction of «Ski School Inclusive» the pre-booking
rate has increased from 5% to 40%. This fact has immensely facilitated our scheduling work over the
past two years. Naturally, the number of students has grown since the campaign started. However, our
operation has become much smoother compared to the years before.
What is your personal insider tip in the winter in Arosa?
I am a passionate skier and I truly enjoy the descent from the Urdenfürggli directly to Heimberg, long
and steep, a real challenge.

27 I Arosa WINTER SEASON 2014/15
Full blooded effort
for our guests.
INTERVIEW WITH THOMAS SCHNELLER
FOREMAN OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF AROSA
What is a typical work day for you?
It is very diverse, depending on the weather and seldom predictable. Some of our principal activities
in winter include the removal of snow in the village as well as the preparation of the winter hiking
trails and the walking trails.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The diversity and the contact to guests, local people and partners.
What are your biggest challenges on your job?
It is important to take the right decisions regarding the removal of snow. It is our objective to have
all walking trails accessible every day.
How do you remove the masses of snow that cover the roads and walking trails in Arosa
every day in order to guarantee constant accessibility?
Wherever possible we use ploughs and shapers. However, many walking trails are being freed by
pure man power. We have a team of 25 people working on snow removal during the winter.
Which jobs must be done around the frozen Obersee lake?
We already start mid-December with the daily preparation of the Obersee lake. The fresh snow is
ploughed on to the ice with the help of the snow mobile and the weight of the worker. Safety is our
highest priority and workmen must always wear a life vest during these kinds of jobs. As soon as the
ice proves thick enough, we start using snow groomers to plough the snow. It is paramount to
continuously check the thickness and quality of the ice. Finally, we put up the infrastructure on and
next to the lake to facilitate the set-up of the various events happening around the lake.
What is your personal insider tip in the winter in Arosa?
The hiking trail Rot Tritt-Scheidegg – simply an experience!

Arosa Schanfigg.
The longest
village street in the world.
It does not matter whether it is Tschiertschen and Praden on the left hand side of the
valley or Langwies, Peist, Pagig and St. Peter, Molinis, Lüen, Castiel and Calfreisen on the
right hand side of the valley, each one of them is unique and boasts its own charm. Many
of the sun-tanned brown traditional Wals houses attract attention and interest from visitors. You can find quiet accommodation options in hotels, guesthouses, holiday apartments and group accommodation. In terms of gastronomy, you will find local specialties
and regional products. The two villages of Langwies and Litzirüti are well known for their
closeness to Arosa which is attractive for skiers, hikers, snow shoe hikers and ski tour
participants. Arosa can easily be reached within 15 minutes with the cute red train. The
restaurants in the villages or the two mountain restaurants Casanna in Fondei or Heimeli in Sapün look forward to serving you their best meals.

Hochwang und Tschiertschen
Small, but Classy.
Discover the sunny face of Hochwang! The bottom station (1480 m above sea
level) is located above the village of St. Peter (free parking) and it is situated only
10 km from Chur or 17 km from the heart of Arosa. Moreover, the winter sports
area is easily accessible by the Rhaetian Railway or by shuttle bus. The two lifts,
one chair lift and one ski lift service around 20 km of family-friendly pistes. Visitors hiking or sledging can enjoy a stunning view on the local mountain range
from the terraces of the two mountain restaurants.
The villages of Tschiertschen and Praden can easily be reached by public bus or car
(free parking) within 20 minutes from Chur. Thanks to its north-facing slopes, snow
is guaranteed on the 27 km of pistes in the ski area of Tschiertschen. Two chairlifts
and two ski lifts operate between 1350 m above sea level and 2440 m above sea
level. The winter sports offer of Tschiertschen also includes a snow sports school, a
sledging trail, guided snow shoe walks, an open ice rink and winter hiking trails.
The guided ski tours to the neighboring ski areas Arosa and Lenzerheide are particularly popular.

33 I Arosa WINTER SEASON 2014/15
Unique 100-year Anniversary
of the Train Connection
Chur – Arosa.
The railway syndicate was assembled in 1911 which set the base for the
start of the construction in the summer of 1912. It took 3 years to finish
the 26-km long track. The first trains rolled up the hill and around the
bends from the oldest town of Switzerland to the mountain village of
Arosa on 12 December 1914. Therefore, we duly celebrate the 100-year
anniversary of this significant railway route this December. And history
continues to be written. We will inaugurate the new Arosa train station
just in time for the anniversary celebration weekend on 13 and 14
December. The highlight of the new train station will be the ‘passerelle’
that links the train station to the bottom station of the Weisshorn cable
car. Once off the train, guests will step into the snow sports area of
Arosa-Lenzerheide within minutes.
THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF CELEBRATIONS
AROUND THE TRAIN STATION AND IN THE
VILLAGE DURING THE ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND
ON 13/ 14 DECEMBER 2014
