Language Requirements English Language Skills: If the medium of instruction of the chosen department/program is English, the applicant has to prove the competency in English in any one way specified below: DEGREES ACCEPTED TESTS AND SCORES* TOEFL-IBT (1) PTE (2) CAE (3) CPE (4) APEX (5) Undergraduate (A) 75 61 C C 60 Undergraduate (B) 79 67 C C 65 Graduate (A) 72 55 C C 60 Graduate (B) 79 67 C C 65 (A): Except “English Language and Literature-BA / English Culture and Literature-MA-PhD” and “Translation and Interpretation-BA / Translation Studies-MA” Programs (B): For “English Language and Literature-BA / English Culture and Literature-MA-PhD” and “Translation and Interpretation-BA / Translation Studies-MA” Programs * Test Definitions: (1): TOEFL-IBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language - Internet Based Test) / Max Score: 120 (2): PTE (Pearson Test of English-Academic) / Max Score: 90 (3): CAE (Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English) / Max Score: A (4): CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English) / Max Score: A (5): APEX (Atılım University Proficiency Exam) / Max Score: 100 Important Notes: - If an applicant fails to submit a valid test score while applying, s/he has to take an English Proficiency Exam at Atılım University after arrival in Turkey. - In case of failure to fulfill the language requirement, the student has the option to attend the English Preparatory School for a period, the length of which will be determined by means of a Placement Test to be held next to the Proficiency Exam. - Also remember that the exam scores are valid for 2 years (only, APEX’s 1 year). 11 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 - IELTS scores are no longer acceptable for university admissions in Turkey. - Those applicants who hold citizenship of an English speaking country (native language), or those applicants of any other nationality who had already spent at least 3 years in an English speaking country (without interruption) for the purposes of education at any level will be automatically exempted. - Application documents (copies) will be the property of the University and kept in its archives; they won’t be returned to applicants. Turkish Language Skills: If the medium of instruction of the chosen department/program is Turkish, the applicant has to prove the competency in Turkish by taking a Turkish Language Test at any one of the test centers with a “TÖMER” mark. There are 3 main indicators (scores) from the lowest, C to the highest, A and, any applicant has to get min B to be able to start as a regular student. Otherwise, the student must attend a proper Turkish Language Course, which is not offered by our University, to improve the language skills. Credential Evaluation and Acceptance Second step in the admission process is issuance of an acceptance letter by the University’s Rectorate upon an in-depth evaluation of candidate’s crecentials by the related department. The department has the sole authority to accept or reject any one application and can not be questioned for the rejection of any one application made. The acceptance letter presents an offer to the applicant in convenience with the credentials, declarations and preferences put forward through application documents, by the assumption that they are true, genuine and complete. Therefore, the acceptance implied in this letter is only conditional, and the finalization of registration is still subject to fulfilment of other related rules and departmental criteria in the process. The acceptance letter is mainly used to obtain a student visa from the nearest Turkish Consulate in the country of origin or residence. Visa Requirement, Exemptions and Student Visa International students from many countries need to obtain a student visa before coming to Turkey to stay and attend a formal degree education. But if you’re coming from a country which is exempted from the visa requirement to enter the country (check the list of countries exempted: http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa), you’re not required to follow the procedures described below. Another exemption from student visa comes with your dependence on a person who has already been a resident in Turkey either due to a diplomatic visa or a work visa. If you aren’t exempted, you should apply to the nearest Turkish Consulate in your country of origin or residence (check the list of Turkish Missions abroad: http://www.mfa.gov.tr/turkish-representations.en.mfa) to obtain a visa of any kind. (Even if you obtain a tourist visa, you can still travel to Turkey and complete the procedures in Ankara.) However, to be on the safe side, we strongly recommend you to apply for a student visa, if you’re not exempted. The documents required to apply for a student visa are as follows: - An acceptance letter from Atılım University - A completed visa application form - Receipt of visa fee payment (fee varies in different countries) - A passport valid for a term long enough (Please check the corresponding visa procedures.) - Proof of financial ability to back up your stay for a long time in Turkey (A scholarship grant, a bank statement, or alike…) - Any additional documents the consulate may ask for… Student visas are valid for 30 days and grant a right to stay in Turkey only within that period. Before it expires, the student must register to an institution and apply for a residence permit to be allowed to stay in Turkey. 12 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 How to Get to Atılım After you arrive in Ankara, you may take a taxi from Esenboğa International Airport to get to the City Center (about 28 km & 80-85 TL) or straight to our Campus (about 49 km & 140-150 TL). You may alternatively use the City Shuttle Busses (BelkoAir) to reach to the City Center (Kızılay), or to AŞTİ (Domestic Bus Terminal). The BelkoAir service fare is 8 TL per passenger. If you’ll come directly to our Campus, AŞTİ is the nearest stop you can get off the bus and take a taxi (about 23 km & 70-75 TL). If not, you can still use “Ankaray” or “Metro” to reach to other districts in Ankara, from either AŞTİ or Kızılay metro stations. (Taxi drive between Kızılay and Campus is about 22 km, and costs about 65 TL.) Notes: - You can easily calculate a taxi fare between two different places by using the calculator at: http://www.taksiucreti.com/?q=tr/ankara-taksi-ucreti-hesaplayicisi - You can see the time table and routes of BelkoAir at: http://www.belkoair.com SPECIAL CASES Being a Special Student: Graduate students have the option to start the academic studies as a “special student” prior to the fulfilment of language requirement (and/or submission of a letter of recognition by YÖK). They may choose to take a few academic courses while preparing to the next Proficiency Exam (and/or completing the missing documents), but nevertheless, the number of courses that can be taken as a “special student” is limited to 4 max. Any additional courses taken before being a regular student will not be counted for student’s academic program. Undergraduate students have to fulfill the language requirement before starting their academic studies. They are not allowed to take any courses as a “special student” due to the regulations in force in Turkey. Having a Deficieny Program: Graduate students (master or PhD) might be required by the accepting department or the institute to take or retake some courses from the previous degree/s as a scientific preparation called “Deficiency Program”. (6 courses, or 18 credits max.). The department or the institute has the authority to designate the courses and to fix the number of courses without being obliged to enounce any justification. That means, the decision and the structure of the program can’t be questioned by the student. A deficiency program is administered for adaptation and orientation of successful candidates before starting their regular studies in the main program. The deficiency courses can’t be substituted for the courses necessary for completion of the main program. Students attending a deficiency program can also take main program courses on the recommendation and approval of the related department. The period of any deficiency program is limited to one year max. This period is not extended except for the semester holidays. The period of deficiency program is not included in the period of main graduate program. Graduate students in a deficiency program must achieve certain CGPAs as defined by the regulations in force in respect to different levels of academic study. (See the regulations in “Must Read” part above.) Being a Transfer Student: An international student who want to transfer from a higher education institution abroad should submit the syllabus (course definitions) of former institution, along with the other application documents required for her/his degree as stated above. (If a valid certificate is not available, the candidate should take a proficiency exam at Atılım University, for English; or should take a level exam at a TÖMER marked center, for Turkish.) Note: Before applying to YÖK for a “Letter of Recognition”, you may ask our advisors to check if your former institution/s is/are included in the lists we already have. If so, you’re not needed to make an application to YÖK. (YÖK is located in Bilkent district.) Warning (for all cadidates): - The registration process has to be followed and completed in person. No agents or nominees are allowed to do so on behalf of the student for any reason or excuse. - All the documents submitted for registration must be original and complete. If the original of any one document is in any language other than English or Turkish, a duly attested translation (by the Turkish Mission in home country or by a sworn translator in Turkey) in one of these two languages has to be submitted along with the original. In case the translation is from a sworn translator in Turkey, a notarial attestation is also needed on the paper/s. - You should submit the original of your matriculation exam score if you’ve submitted any, during your application. - You should fill the Registration Form (cover page of your student file) which will be given to you by our advisors during the process. Residence Permit In order to stay in Turkey as an international student, you need to obtain an official document (now a card) called Residence Permit. All foreign nationals, regardless of their status, are required to apply to Provincial Migration Administration Directorate (İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü) for a residence permit within a month after they enter the country. The duration of your first residence permit will most probably be one year. Whatever the given period may be, you must apply to extend it before the expiry date on your card. Warning: If you have a student visa, you should not exit the country before you obtain your residence permit. If you do so, your name will be included in the list of blocked persons, with a stamp on your passport, and this will make you blocked for 3 months from coming back to Turkey. (Turkish citizenship holders and “blue card” holders do not need to get a residence permit.) Health Insurance Although it isn’t mandatory to register to the system, we strongly recommend our international students to register to the General Health Insurance (GHI), if they don’t already have an insurance policy valid in Turkey. (Please check if your existing insurance is valid in Turkey prior to your departure.) The yearly fee for the GHI varies with personal inputs, from about 500 TL to 800 TL. You should follow the steps below for registration: - Obtain your Foreign ID number (11 digit temporary citizenship number starting with 99) with the residence permit. - Take a signed and stamped “Course Registration Form” from our offices. - Make an application to “Gölbaşı İlçe Sağlık Müdürlüğü” (Gölbaşı Health Directorate) in Gölbaşı. Warning: - You should apply within 3 months following the date of your registration to the University. Otherwise, you’ll lose the right to register into the system and you won’t be allowed again to enter throughout your whole period in Turkey. If you don’t register on time, and if you need an health insurance later, you’ll have to purchase a private health insurance which might cost you a lot more. (It’s also quite probable that that policy will prove useless in many instances of health care necessity.) - Please also keep in mind that you would encounter unbearably high expenditures for health services and medicines you may need, if you don’t have an insurance coverage. Be careful! 16 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 Tax Number Having a tax number is not an obligation for you. However, if you’ll open a bank account, make banking transactions, or register a cell (mobile) phone, you have to obtain a number from any tax office you’ll find. You can find a list of tax offices in Ankara at: http://www.ankararehberi.com/kurumlar-elcilikler-devlet-isleri/vergidaire.html Registration of Cell (Mobile) Phone If you want to use a device brought from abroad, you must have it registered within 30 days. In order to register the device, you must have a tax number and pay about 130 TL to any tax office (vergi dairesi) you’ll find. You can find a list of tax offices in Ankara at: http://www.ankararehberi.com/kurumlar-elcilikler-devlet-isleri/vergidaire.html Then, you should visit a cell phone kiosk (Turkcell, Vodafone, or Avea) with the tax office receipt, the device, and your passport to complete the device registration there. You must register your device personally. But, if you buy a device in Turkey, you don’t need to register it. English Proficiency Exam and the Placement Test English Proficiency Exam: If the medium of instruction is English in your department/program, please refer to the table given in “Application” part above to see what documents and scores are required to be exempted from English Proficiency Exam. If you don’t have a certificate of English or, if your certificate doesn’t match the criteria specified there, you should take the Proficiency Exam at Atılım University on the date given by the academic calendar below. You are free to register to the University before or after taking the exam, provided that you’ve already been accepted and received an acceptance letter ahead of the exam date. Basic Rules of the Exam: - You have to bring your acceptance letter, or if any, your student ID card (or certificate) with you. - You have to show your documents to our staff when asked. - Our staff have the authority to inspect your documents and to not to allow you taking the exam if any suspects arise. - You have to write your full name on the exam paper and attendance list just as it’s in your passport. Otherwise, the University won’t assume any responsibility for decleration of your score. - You have to dress properly so as to show your face clearly to our staff. No hats, sunglasses, veils or other garments covering your face will be allowed. If you reject to take these kind of garments out, you’ll be dismissed from the hall. - You have to deliver your cell phone or other electronic devices to our staff during the exam. - You have to obey other rules of the exam which will be announced by our staff before starting the exam. - You have to mind the warnings by our staff during the exam and act in accordance. If you know you don’t have any chances to pass the exam, or you prefer to start from the very first level, you don’t have to take it. In this case, you should directly take the placement test introduced below. Note: Those applicants who hold citizenship of an English speaking country (native language), or those applicants of any other nationality who had already spent at least 3 years in an English speaking country (without interruption) for the purposes of education at any level will be automatically exempted. The Placement Test: In case you fail in Proficiency Exam, you should take the Placemet Test before starting the English Preparatory School. This test aims to find out your level with respect to basic skills in English and to place you in the most appropriate class. Therefore, you won’t pass or fail the test. (If you prefer to start from the very first level, you don’t have to take it.) You don’t have to make an application for this test if you already have taken the Proficiency Exam and failed. In this case, you’ll automatically be taken into the list of attendees. If you didn’t take the Proficiency Exam first, please check with our advisors that your name was declared to the English School. Please don’t forget that the same rules counted above for Proficiency Exam are also true for this test. You have to obey! 17 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 Warning: Once you start to attend our Prep School, you won’t have the right to take the Proficiency Exam before successfully completing the intermediate level. However, you are free to take any one of the exams listed in part “Application”above (namely TOEFL, PTE, CAE, CPE) any time you want. In case you obtain a satisfactory score, you can start attending academic courses as a regular student at the beginning of following semester, provided that you’ve no unfulfilled financial obligations against the University, and your other documents are also completed. Course Registration All undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students who will start to take academic courses have to register their courses to be taken in the current semester. This is a task completely different from registering to the University. Don’t forget! If you fail to register your courses within the 3-days period stated in the academic calendar below, you’ll lose your right to attend the classes legally. Even if your department lets you attend the courses, you’ll encounter serious problems in your studies during the semester. (For example, your academic advisor can’t see your records while trying to be of help, you may not be allowed to take some quizes, mid-term exams or even final exams, you can’t learn the grades of your exams, and you can’t see them on your transcript, you can’t attend some laboratory hours and trainings, you can’t apply to student exchange programs, you may have to toil with some cumbersome procedures in order to have a special decision made by your department to add your courses later, possibly to no end, and so on…) Please remember that you have to repeat the same procedure at the beginning of each and every semester throughout your graduation. Steps to follow for your course registration: - Pay the semester tuition fee and make sure that your student account is open (http://sis.atilim.edu.tr). You should check the system within the 3-days period stated in the academic calendar below. (Out of this period, the course registration system will be closed to student’s access.) - Consult with your academic advisor in order to choose the courses you’ll take in the current semester - Login to your student account, and enter your courses into the system properly. Be sure that you’ve saved before logout, take a print-out, and have it seen and approved by your academic advisor: That’s all! (But, if you still don’t know how to do it, go and ask your advisor’s help.) Note: If you’ve any kind of financial obligations against the University, your account may be suspended until fulfillment. Add/Drop Courses You are allowed to add or drop a course before the deadline given by the academic calendar. Even if you’re required to do it personally, you should first consult with your advisor in order to prevent any mistakes or disadvantages for you. You can add or drop courses at the beginning of each and every fall or spring semester, but you can’t do it with the summer term courses. Withdrawal Only undergraduate students can benefit from withdrawing right. Students can withdraw from a course for any reasons, but they can’t withdraw from the courses of first and second semesters of the first year. (Courses that were taken and passed before, but being repeated to increase the CGPA are excluded from this rule.) Students are not eligible to withdraw from the courses which they are compulsorily repeating, or have taken and received the letter grade W before, and/or from “not-included” (NI) courses. Students are allowed to withdraw from a maximum of six courses throughout their whole undergraduate period, on condition of withdrawing from only one course (max) within a semester. Students must declare their intention to withdraw to their advisors first, and/or get advisors’ proposal, and then the consent and approval of the course instructor. It’s not possible to withdraw from a course beyond the deadline given by the academic calendar. 18 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 Grading System Students will be given a letter grade by the course instructor for each and every course they have taken. (Trakya & Anadolu in Turkish) Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, and constitutional republic with a diverse cultural heritage. The country's official language is Turkish. Most of the population are ethnic Turks; the remainder consists of legally recognized and unrecognized minorities. The vast majority of the population is Muslim. Turkey is a member of the UN, NATO, OECD, OSCE, OIC and the G-20. After becoming one of the first members of the Council of Europe in 1949, Turkey became an associate member of the EEC in 1963, joined the EU Customs Union in 1995 and started full membership negotiations with the European Union in 2005. Turkey's growing economy and diplomatic initiatives have led to its recognition as a regional power. Turkey has a unitary structure in terms of administration and this aspect is one of the most important factors shaping the Turkish public administration. When three powers (executive, legislative and judiciary) are taken into account as the main functions of the state, local administrations have little power. In other words, there are no units called "states" in Turkey and the provinces and cities come after the central administration. Local administrations (Belediye/Municipality with elected Mayors) were established to provide services in place and the government is represented by appointed governors. Turkey is subdivided into 81 provinces (cities) for administrative purposes. Each province is divided into districts, for a total of 923 districts. Turkey is also subdivided into 7 regions and 21 subregions for geographic, demographic and economic purposes; this does not refer to an administrative division… Cities: 24 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 Climate (Weather Conditions): The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas have a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters. The coastal areas bordering the Black Sea have a temperate Oceanic climate with warm, wet summers and cool to cold, wet winters. The Turkish Black Sea coast receives the greatest amount of precipitation and is the only region of Turkey that receives high precipitation throughout the year. The eastern part of that coast averages 2,200 millimetres (87 in) annually. The coastal areas bordering the Sea of Marmara, which connects the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea, have a transitional climate between a temperate Mediterranean climate and a temperate Oceanic climate with warm to hot, moderately dry summers and cool to cold, wet winters. Snow falls on the coastal areas of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea almost every winter, but usually melts in no more than a few days. However, snow is rare in the coastal areas of the Aegean Sea and very rare in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Mountains close to the coast prevent Mediterranean influences from extending inland, giving the central Anatolian plateau of the interior of Turkey a continental climate with sharply contrasting seasons. Winters on the eastern part of the plateau are especially severe. Temperatures of −30 to −40 °C (−22 to −40 °F) can occur in eastern Anatolia. Snow may remain at least 120 days of the year. In the west, winter temperatures average below 1 °C (34 °F). Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures often above 30 °C (86 °F) in the day. Annual precipitation averages about 400 millimetres (15 in), with actual amounts determined by elevation. The driest regions are the Konya plain and the Malatya plain, where annual rainfall is often less than 300 millimetres (12 in). May is generally the wettest month, whereas July and August are the driest. Tourism: Tourism in Turkey has experienced rapid growth in the last twenty years, and constitutes an important part of the economy. In 2013, 37.8 million foreign visitors arrived in Turkey, which ranked as the 6th most popular tourism destination in the world; they contributed $27.9 billion to Turkey's revenues. Turkey has 13 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the "Historic Areas of Istanbul", the "Rock Sites of Cappadocia", the "Neolithic Site of Çatalhöyük", "Hattusa: the Hittite Capital", the "Archaeological Site of Troy", "Pergamon and its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape", "Hierapolis – Pamukkale", and "Mount Nemrut". And, 51 World Heritage Sites in tentative list, such as the archaeological sites or historic urban centers of Göbekli Tepe, Gordion, Ephesus, Aphrodisias, Perga, Lycia, Sagalassos, Aizanoi, Zeugma, Ani, Harran, Mardin, Konya and Alanya. Turkey hosts two of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which are the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis. Cusine: Turkish cuisine is regarded as one of the most prominent in the world, its popularity is largely owed to the cultural influences of the Ottoman Empire and partly because of its major tourism industry. It is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of Central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan cuisines. The country's position between the East and the Mediterranean Sea helped the Turks gain complete control of major trade routes, and an ideal environment allowed plants and animals to flourish. Turkish cuisine was well established by the mid-1400s, the 25 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 beginning of theOttoman Empire's six hundred-year reign. Yogurt salads, fish in olive oil, and stuffed and wrapped vegetables became Turkish staples. The empire, eventually spanning from Austria to northern Africa, used its land and water routes to import exotic ingredients from all over the world. By the end of the 1500s, the Ottoman court housed over 1,400 live-in cooks and passed laws regulating the freshness of food. Since the fall of the empire in World War I (1914–1918) and the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923, foreign food such as French hollandaise sauce and western fast food have made their way into the modern Turkish diet. Science and Technology: TÜBİTAK is the leading agency for developing science, technology and innovation policies in Turkey. TÜBA is an autonomous scholarly society acting to promote scientific activities in Turkey. TAEK is the official nuclear energy institution of Turkey. Its objectives include academic research in nuclear energy, and the development and implementation of peaceful nuclear tools. Turkish government companies for research and development in military technologies include Turkish Aerospace Industries, Aselsan, Havelsan,Roketsan, MKE, among others. Turkish Satellite Assembly, Integration and Test Center (UMET) is a spacecraft production and testing facility owned by the Ministry of National Defence and operated by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). The Turkish Space Launch System (UFS) is a project to develop the satellite launch capability of Turkey. It consists of the construction of a spaceport, the development of satellite launch vehicles as well as the establishment of remote earth stations. Education: The structure of “Turkish Education System” is shown in the chart below: In Turkey, there are 175 universities and academies in total, 104 of which are state institutions and 71 are foundation. 26 ATILIM UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE 2015-2016 ABOUT ANKARA Ankara (formerly known as Ancyra and Angora) is the capital of Turkey, located in Central Anatolia. With a population of 4,587,558 in the urban center (2014) and 5,150,072 provinces included (2015). It’s Turkey's second largest city behind Istanbul. Ankara was Atatürk's headquarters from 1920 and has been the capital of the Republic of Turkey since its founding in 1923, replacing Istanbul after the fall of Ottoman Empire. The government is a prominent employer but Ankara is also an important commercial and industrial city, located at the center of Turkey's road and railway networks. The city gave its name to the Angora wool shorn from Angora rabbits, the long-haired Angora goat (the source of mohair), and the Angora cat. The area is also known for its pears, honey, and muscat grapes. Although situated in one of the driest places of Turkey and surrounded mostly by steppe vegetation except for the forested areas on the southern periphery, Ankara can be considered a green city in terms of green areas 2 per inhabitant, which is 72 m per head. Ankara is a very old city with various Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman archaeological sites. The historical center of town is a rocky hill rising 150 m (500 ft) over the left bank of the Ankara Çayı, a tributary of the Sakarya River, the classical Sangarius. The hill remains crowned by the ruins of the old citadel. Although few of its outworks have survived, there are well-preserved examples of Roman and Ottoman architecture throughout the city. Climate (Weather Conditions): Due to its elevation and inland location, Ankara has a hot-summer continental climate with cold snowy winters. Spring and autumn are generally mild, but sudden hot or cold spells frequently occur in the region. Rainfall occurs mostly during the spring and autumn. Because of Ankara's high altitude and its dry summers, nightly temperatures even in the summer months may be low. Ankara's annual average precipitation is fairly low at 408 millimeters (16 inch), nevertheless rain falls can be observed throughout the year. Monthly mean temperatures range from 0.3 °C (32.5 °F) in January to 23.5 °C (74.3 °F) in July, with an annual mean of 12.02 °C (53.6 °F). Record rain= 88.9 kg/m2 (11.06.1997) / Record snow= 30.0 cm (11.8 in) (05.01.2002) Transportation: The Electricity, Gas, Bus General Directorate (EGO) operates the Ankara Metro and other forms of public transportation. Ankara is currently served by a suburban rail named Ankaray (A1) and three subway lines (M1, M2, M3) of the Ankara Metro with about 300,000 total daily commuters, while an additional subway line (M4) is currently under construction. A 3.2 km (2.0 mile) long gondola lift with four stations connects the district of Şentepe to the Yenimahalle metro station. - By Train: The Ankara Central Station is a major rail hub in Turkey. The Turkish State Railways operates passenger train service from Ankara to other major cities, such as İstanbul, Eskişehir, Balıkesir, Kütahya, İzmir, Kayseri, Adana, Kars, Elazığ, Malatya, Diyarbakır, Karabük, Zonguldak and Sivas. Commuter rail also runs between the stations of Sincan and Kayaş (districts of Ankara). On 13 March 2009, the new “Yüksek Hızlı Tren” (YHT) high-speed rail service began operation between Ankara and Eskişehir. On 23 August 2011, another YHT high-speed line commercially started its service between Ankara and Konya. On 25 July 2014, the Ankara–Istanbul highspeed line of YHT entered service. The School follows a curriculum in parallel to our English Preparatory School on Campus with a modified modular system and weekly Schedule. The objective of academic studies at our School is to equip students with the proficiency in English to follow the main program courses, comprehend and interpret the publications they read, conduct researches in their fields of study, effectively contribute to seminars and discussions and communicate in daily life. The modular system of our School consists of five different levels: Starter, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and UpperIntermediate. Each level takes 8 to 10 weeks with a course load of 20 hours per week. The tuition fee for one level of English courses is USD 1,250 and it has to be paid prior to starting date of each one level. Once you start to attend the courses at any level and class you’ve been placed, you should complete at least the intermediate level before being eligible to take the proficiency exam at Atılım. If you take and pass the proficiency exam after completing intermediate level, it’s up to you to take the upper-intermediate level; you can transfer to your department/program as a regular student! Since you’ll be subject to rules and regulations of our School during your study in there, you have to obey the rules and regulations that will be declared or announced to you by the School Management. (Notice: You’ve to attend 80% of the courses.) If you’re an undergraduate student registered to any department (faculty), you have to attend the English Preparatory School on Campus, and you’ll be subject to its rules and regulations. In that case, you’ll pay a semester fee which is USD 5,000. (you can see the relevant documentation at: http://prep.atilim.edu.tr/en/hazirlik-okulu-yonetmeligi) CULTURE SHOCK Culture shock is a complex but temporary state of psychological and mental turbulences. Many students experience such a shock while or after living in a foreign country. Adjustment to a new culture and environment is not easy and not accomplished in a few days; it can take a few months or even more. Anyone who enters in a new culture almost inevitably suffers from such disorientation. The new physical and social environment exposes too many things new and hard to understand. It takes time to learn how to live there, how to handle different situations to meet the necessities, and become confortable with the new society. Here are the most typical symptoms and stages of culture shock: Symptoms of Culture Shock - Sadness, loneliness, melancholy and homesickness - Anger, irritability, resentment - Insomnia (sleepness) or excessive sleep - Overeating or anorexia - Preoccupation with health - Obsessions over cleanliness - Aches, pains, allergies - Exhaustion, causeless crying - Increased worry, desire to withdraw - Sudden changes in mood, depression, vulnerability - Feelings of being lost or overlooked - Loss of identity and self confidence Stages of Culture Shock Honeymoon: Students are excited and eager to explore their new home. Typically, this stage is relatively short. Cultural Shock: As the students settle in to daily life, the novelty and excitement wear off, and they may start feeling sad or unsatisfied. Many of the symptoms mentioned above can be seen at this stage of culture shock. Recovery: Once the new life becomes more familiar and they become comfortable with living in their new home, they feel happier. Adjustment: At this final stage of living abroad, they learn how to live in another country and integrate their beliefs and lifestyle choices. Reverse Culture Shock: They experince many of the same ups and downs after returning back home. Reintegration: They learn how to adjust their new perspectives into the home country’s environment and eventually feel comfortable at how the experience abroad fits in at home. Be Aware of ıt! Learn a few words in Turkish, such as Merhaba (Hello), Günaydın (Good Morning), İyi Günler (Have a Nice Day), or Teşekkür Ederim (Thank You), Lütfen (Please), Pardon (Excuse Me), Evet (Yes), Hayır (No), and so on… Turkish people appreciate this very much. Turkish people have a deep respect for the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and they wouldn’t tolerate even a harmless joke about him, much less any form of derogatory discussion about his achievements. Same is true for the Turkish flag.
