Letter from the President
As we look forward to the Holiday Season, it is truly a time to give thanks for the many
blessings and fortunes of our lives. I hope that all ASHAV members have had a Fun show
season and are looking forward to spending time with their families and friends.
The 2015 ASHAV Horse Show has received great reviews. This is thanks to the Sponsors, Volunteers, Exhibitors, Trainers and Kent Moeller our Horse Show Manager who kept
things running smoothly. The hard work of the members and the caliber of horses that showed
at our 32rd Horse Show were outstanding. Our Fun Dog Show was once again much anticipated & exhibitors had lots of fun. The “Adult” Stick Horse Class was so much fun and will
definitely be kept in the 2016 show schedule! I hope that everyone remembers that the horse
show is our major fundraiser each year and any profits from the show fund most of our programs and charitable donations. If you have not sent in your Sponsorship please do so
ASAP. We are trying to close the books on the 2015 show. If you have any suggestions
for the 2016 Horse Show, please forward them to any zone director or myself.
I want to say a special thank you to the volunteers who give of their time, energy and
resources to this organization. I am impressed by the amount of enthusiasm and commitment
that individuals give in support of this organization, each other and the wonderful American
Saddlebred Horse. Together, we can make it the number one breed in Virginia!
The ASHAV convention will be held March 5th. , at The Natural Bridge Hotel . The annual business meeting and election of officers & zone directors will be held late Saturday afternoon before dinner, A Silent Auction, ASHAV High Point awards, Junior & Adult Sportsmanship awards as well as the presentation of the Virginia Winter Tournament awards will be
presented Saturday evening. We are still working on other activities for the Convention, so
stay tuned!!
The U.P.H.A. Chapter 18 Spring Riding Clinic will be February 19th & 20st, 2016.This
is an excellent opportunity to brush up on your riding skills, work on problem areas or learn a
new way to do something under the expert guidance of a top trainer. More information to
come!! Mark your calendar and plan to attend BOTH!
In closing, I have enjoyed serving as your President this year and hope that you have a
safe and wonderful Holiday Season. I look forward to seeing you all at the Convention.
Sincerely,
Carol S. Reedy

ASHAV Hall of Fame 2015
Claude Shiflet
I am honored to present this year’s ASHAV Hall of Fame inductee. This gentleman is a Virginia native and is a major force nationally in the Saddlebred community. Claude Shiflet, supported by his wife Alice and their family, has set a high standard in breeding, training, and
showing our beloved American Saddlebred horses. He has also set the standard for character
traits such as honesty, integrity, devotion to family and customers, fairness, and morality.
Claude was born in nearby Churchville, Virginia, and has been associated with horses, particularly the American Saddlebreds, all his life. As a young man, he carried on the family tradition
of farming, and by night, he trained horses. Claude’s first professional job was for Senator
John Amos at Highland Green Farm in West Virginia. His next move was to North Carolina
and Dr. McCloud’s LuMar Farm where he trained Commander’s Countess, Follyrama, Carolina’s Catherine The Great, and other champions. From there he went to A. E. Knowlton’s Emerald Farm where he made his first world champion Tinsel Wing as a three-year-old five-gaited
entry. Black Emerald, Red Emerald, and WC Purloined Emerald were a few of the champions
he trained there. A stop at the famous Dodge Stable and association with the renowned Earl
Teater in Kentucky then brought Claude and his family to Asheboro, North Carolina, in 1972
where he resides today. We cannot list all the champion horses and devoted clients associated
with Claude. He has been blessed with many fine entries and even finer customers. Many of
you will remember these stars of the show ring: Stanley County Fox, RWC Society Time, Ovation, Flirtatious, Cause a Flutter, Victory Tied Blue, Dark Lady Luck, Aire of Love, So Scandalous, Knightwatch, Laurel Hill Supreme, Pistols and Petticoats, Feudin Fury, Flight’s Truly
Fair, Fiesta’s Pride, and Starlike Aires. Names like Love, Antich, Ray, Murphy, Anderson,
Baker, Freemen and Leon are just a few of many customers who have benefited from Claude’s
expertise. The Shiflet tradition of fine horses and first class clients continues today. Son Harrison and his wife Beverly and their son Grant are well known trainers in North Carolina. Their
other son Matt and his wife Whitney are successful trainers as well with a long list of champi(Continued on page 8)

ons and world champions. Son Doug is married to Debbie and is a well known Saddlebred
photographer. Son Mark works in real estate in Louisville and his wife Jill is a champion Saddlebred rider. Son Shane is a professional equine photographer and his wife Suzy is a Saddlebred trainer in Asheboro. Alice has been an exceptional help mate and asset to Claude and all
the family. Her friendly, approachable manner accounts for her widespread popularity in the
horse show world. I had the great pleasure and honor to present Claude to the Roanoke Valley
Horse Show Hall of Fame and the Virginia Horse Show Association Hall of Fame. He is also a
member of the World Championship Horse Show, the UPHA and The American Saddlebred
Association of the Carolinas Halls of Fame. I now present Claude his sixth Hall of Fame membership as the 2015 inductee to the ASHAV Hall of Fame.

ASHAV Breeder of the Year 2015
Rae Lee Mills said that she rode when she was 9 months pregnant, so her son, this year’s ASHAV
Breeder of the Year, was practically born on a horse. His grandmother, Nada Honaker, said that
when he was 2 years old, he came in the house one day and asked her and his great aunt if they
had seen his pony, Charlie Brown, throw him. They said “no” and he replied, "well don't worry, he will
do it again" and out the door he went.
Burt Honaker spent his early years learning and riding at his parents, Rae Lee Mill's and Terry
Honaker's farm. When he was in his early teens, he worked at Leatherwood Farm and also for
Dickie Davis at Fort Chiswell Farm. Horses and football were his passions.
After graduating from high school, Burt spent a couple of years in college and then enlisted in the Air
Force for 4 years. When he got out of the service he knew he wanted to continue to train horses. He
was hired as the assistant trainer at Callaway Hills Stable in Missouri and ultimately became head
trainer. Burt started and trained several world champions including Callaway's Born With Style and
Callaway’s Born For This.
He began to study bloodlines and crosses and put his stamp on their breeding program. Breeding
became his passion. Burt fell in love with a colt born on the farm named Callaway's Northern Kiss.
He thought he was pretty special and when the opportunity to buy him came up, he knew it was the
right thing to do.
While working at Callaway Hills, Burt met Miriam Hirshon. They shared a love for horses and a vision of owning a breeding farm of their own. Nine years ago Burt decided it was time to come home.
He began building their farm in Wytheville, Virginia on property given to them by Dickie Davis. Over
the last 8 years Burt and Miriam have built a first class breeding operation. They purchased Sea
Forth's Billionaire as a cross with "Kiss" mares. Over the last several years "Kiss" has made a name
for himself. Some of his get include Fort Chiswell's Royal Kiss, Surprise Kiss, Watermark's A Kiss
For Luck, Too Sweet To Kiss, Heir To A Kiss, Here Comes The Boom, HS First Day, Enchanted
Kiss, One More Kiss, and Famous Kiss, and the list goes on.
Northern Kiss Farm has a bright future. Their goal continues to be to produce horses of the highest
quality. Miriam and Burt are dedicated to the breeding and training of the American Saddlebred and
look forward to continued service to the industry. With over 20 babies born this year and hopes to
increase that number, Northern
Kiss Farm is striving to be one of the premiere breeding farms in the country.
Tonight we congratulate this year’s ASHAV Breeder of the Year, Burt Honaker.

2015 ASHAV Scholarship Recipient
The ASHAV scholarship committee searches for a scholarship applicant that is 21 years of age and under, at
grade 11 or higher, who demonstrate financial need, a commitment to the American Saddlebred industry and
academic success.
This year’s winner embodies all of these characteristics and more. She graduated from Salem High School in
June of 2015 and is currently a freshman at the University of Virginia, contemplating a major in biology and a
minor in Spanish.
A faithful member of ASHAV, since the age of eight, she has grown up showing in multiple American Saddlebred divisions and reached a personal goal, of showing on the green shavings at Louisville, in August of 2015.
Over the years, our winner has taken lessons on and shown American Saddlebreds and Hackney Ponies. She
has been instructed by several trainers and appreciates the fact that she has an exceptional support system. Her
first lessons began at age eight, with Nancy Troutman, at Meadow Wood Stables. While riding with Meadow
Wood she has had the opportunity to show Instant Promise and Touch the Clouds in the Twelve and Under
Walk Trot Country Pleasure Division and Morelli in the Twelve and Under Walk Trot Show Pleasure Division. She also showed Curly Day in the 14 to 17 Country Pleasure Division. For the last two years, our winner
has been riding and showing Pulitzer Prize, for Karen Waldron and Bent Tree Farm, in the Road Pony Under
Saddle Division.
Her positive attitude, maturity and
intelligence make her a role model
for all ages. She has worked diligently to support her equine endeavor; from assisting in the preparation for upcoming shows, participating and helping Maggie Gardiner, for
several summers, with the Long Acre
Stables horse camps to spending
countless hours helping with the Virginia Winter Tournaments, labeling
back numbers, creating class lists for
individual barns, organizing ribbons
and then volunteering to help hold
and groom horses.
She has been an active youth and now
active adult member of ASHAV, for
ten years. Our recipient has spent
countless hours selling raffle tickets
and “flying pigs” and has helped raise
money as a Spice Girl and backup
singer for Aretha Franklin, during the
ASHAV conventions lip syncing

The ASHAV scholarship committee could not have chosen a more rounded young woman. She has not only
served and supported many grass root shows, the United Professional Horsemen’s Association, the American
Hackney Horse Society, the United States Equestrian Federation and ASHAV, but was also a member of the
Junior and National Honor Society, Vice President of the Spanish Honor Society and member of the prom
committee. She not only ran on the Salem High School cross country team but also received the team Impact
award and was awarded the title of Most Dedicated. While playing high school lacrosse she received various
All District and All-Valley awards and was a first team All-District Defender in 2015 and 2nd Team AllRegion. Our recipient has travelled to Santa Cruz, Bolivia on 2 different exchange program trips where she
was completely immersed in the homes, school and local culture for 6 weeks. She participated in church mission trips, volunteering to repair homes for underprivileged southern families and continues to volunteer for
the Roanoke Valley Community School fundraisers, including the Annual Strawberry Festival. During all of
her world travels, club officer positions, sports and volunteering, she maintained a weekly babysitting job and
a 4.36 GPA and was honored as a distinguished graduate in the top 10% of her graduating class.
While attending UVA she has become a part of Challah for Hunger, a group that sells Challah on grounds to
raise money for the Blue Ridge Food Pantry and Mazon, a nonprofit organization who work to end hunger in
the United States and Israel. She is also a member of GlobeMed, an organization that is partnered with “Build
Your Future” in Cambodia. They raise money to help improve the health of impoverished people around the
world. Our recipient thanks ASHAV for introducing her to volunteering, teaching her the importance of helping out and fueling her desire to help others in her community
While riding, volunteering and spending countless hours
on academic work and community service projects, our
winner also won reserve in the World Championship
Horse Shows Junior Judging Contest in 2010 and then
won first place, two years in a row, in 2011 and 2012. This
hard working young lady not only enjoys the show ring,
but has no problem spending time “behind the scenes,”
from washing and braiding tails, setting up for shows,
manicuring hooves and feeding, to preparing and refreshing stalls and bedding.
She plans to keep horses a part of her life, for as long as
she is able; hoping to continue her support of ASHAV and
staying involved in the horse show world. Our winner has
been heard to say, “Riding horses has been a part of my
life for so long. Showing and the American Saddlebred
breed has taught me many values that I can carry into all
aspects of my life. I’ve learned how to work hard to
achieve my goals and how to appreciate the rides or the
experiences when I have done my best, even when I haven’t received the best ribbon in the ring or the top award.”
ASHAV is honored to recognize such an upstanding citizen and this year’s scholarship recipient. We wish her
much success in all her future endeavors.
Congratulations Miss Samantha Haven Stratton!

Easy Fund Raising
Opportunity!
Wow!
This is a way each of us can help support ASHAV without spending any extra money and very,
very little time! If you buy your horse feed at Southern States, all you have to do is save the
proof of purchase labels from your feed bags or keep your receipts if you buy in bulk, turn
those in to our organization and we will get money for them! Lori Gordon has graciously
agreed to collect the proofs of purchases and receipts for ASHAV and to send them in to
Southern States. This can be a very big job, and with your help, we hope to keep Lori so busy
that she will need an assistant! So start sending in those proofs of purchase.
Thank you for helping ASHAV!
CLIP THE PROOF-OF-PURCHASE SEALS FOR ASHAV
Southern States’ Special Horse Organization Winners (SHOW) Program helps turn
empty feed bags into cash for horse-related organizations. Nonprofit breed associations and horse clubs are eligible. Currently more than 300 groups are earning money
through the SHOW Program.
Here’s how it works:
Register your organization with Southern States in Richmond, VA, then get
everyone to clip and save the proof-of-purchase seals found on the back of each bag of
feed purchased at a Southern States store. For bulk feed purchases, submit the customer copy of the delivery ticket. For every bag of Legends or Triple Crown feed,
your organization will receive 25 cents, and $10 per ton on delivered bulk feed.
Reliance feeds are also included at a smaller rebate amount.
Mail your proof-of-purchase seals to:
