About 805 million people in the world, or one in nine, suffer
from hunger, according to The State of Food Insecurity in
the World released on September 2014 by FAO, IFAD and
WFP. The overall trend in hunger reduction in developing
countries means that the Millennium Development Goal
(MDG) of halving the proportion of undernourished people
by 2015 is within reach, “if appropriate and immediate
efforts are stepped up” the report said. With the number
of undernourished people remaining “unacceptably high”,
the agency heads stressed the need to renew the political
commitment to tackle hunger and to transform it into
concrete actions. Dedicating a special emphasis on this
crucial thematic, the conference wants to offer an overview on
international aid and how different actors play a relevant role
in the humanitarian field. The scientific event aims to answer
to the following questions: which are the main features of
humanitarian aid, nowadays? Is it still responding to humanity,
neutrality, impartiality and independence criteria or is it more
and more similar to cooperation interventions? What makes
a difference between cooperation and solidarity? How has
the role of NGOs changed following to the growing interests
of the private sector in CSR and following to the entrance
of Universities as powerful players in international solidarity?
9:30
The conference will be structured in three different sections,
two more frontal with five lectures run by spokespeople
from National and International Organizations, UN Agencies
and EU. In the afternoon a more interactive section will be
organized with three round tables on the role of different
actors in solidarity and humanitarian aid.
Statistics Division, Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO)
The event’s main objective is to compare cooperation
institutional aspect run by States at supranational level
through European Union, International Organizations and
UN Agencies such as FAO and World Health Organization
(WHO) with solidarity approach adopted by a variety of
different actors: Universities, private sector and multinational
enterprises and civil society organizations such as NGOs.
