Authorities have quickly identified a suspect in the death of 52-year-old John Keith Smith and that suspect and an accomplice have now been taken into custody. On Thursday afternoon LaFayette police responded to a home located on Alabama Avenue West. Shortly before police officers were dispatched to the home a relative of John Keith Smith arrived at the home and discovered Smith’s body lying on the floor of his home. Investigators quickly learned that the victim’s automobile was also missing from the Alabama Avenue residence. That vehicle was identified as a silver Hyundai. LaFayette police Casey Smith Amber Hancock placed a call to regional law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the vehicle and it was located a short time later by officers in Auburn, Alabama. Auburn officers were able to detain the driver of the vehicle, that driver was identified as Casey Smith. In addition to Smith Auburn police also located a female passenger in the vehicle. That passenger has been identified as Amber Hancock, she is believed to be the girlfriend of Casey Smith. Auburn police were able to arrest duo on charges of giving false information to a police officer. Casey Smith is describe as the 30-year-old nephew of the victim, John Keith Smith. Investigators believe that the motive behind the homicide was robbery and burglary. However charges have been upgraded in Chambers County to include capital murder for the death of John K. Smith. Initially following the traffic stop in Auburn Casey Smith and Amber Hancock were being detained in the Lee County Detention Center in Opelika, however jail population records indicate that the pair has been transported to the Chambers County Detention Center in LaFayette and are now being housed at that facility. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation took the role of lead investigator in the homicide of John Kieth Smith, who was also commonly known as “coach”. The local grandfather who was known to have hobbies that included watching NASCAR races and proudly proclaiming “roll tide” was laid to rest on Tuesday March 8th, 2016 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett. Missing car key to nabbing suspects By Alton Mitchell The popular television show on A&E called The First 48 follows real life police investigators in major cities across the nation as they pursue clues and attempt to solve homicides with a 2 day time frame. Investigators on the show do not always get their suspect in the allotted time frame. However if the LaFayette Police Department was on the show it could be a poster child for other investigators on how to quickly identify and capture suspects in the 48 hour time line. In the past seven months LaFayette investigators have found themselves at the center of two homicide investigations. Homicides are not a common thing in the LaFayette area and normally average one or less per year. However in less than a seven month period two have shown themselves in the neighborhoods of LaFayette. Yet unlike many other cities the LaFayette area can proudly say that it has a 100% closure rate on recent homicides. LaFayette police were faced with their first homicide on Monday August 9th, 2015 when officers responded to a home on Martin Luther King Drive in the early morning hours. Upon arrival officers discovered a 20-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. That young man was identified as LaMarcus D. Hardnett. Mr. Hardnett was still alive when officers arrived but in a grave situation as his condition was deteriorating. In need of immediate medical attention Mr. Hardnett was airlifted to a hospital in Columbus, Georgia for treatment of his injuries. The following day the young man who had graduated from LaFayette High School just a little over a year before lost the battle he faced against his injuries and passed away. While Mr. Hardnett lay in a hospital room fighting for his life investigators in LaFayette were already on the case and building a case against the alleged shooter. Before responding officers ended their shift they had a suspect in custody. Santavius Quamez Core of Opelika was named as a suspect and apprehended by LaFayette officers only a short time after the shooting. He was arrested and booked into the Chambers County Jail on murder charges. On last Thursday LaFayette officers were again faced with a homicide. Officers were called to a home on Alabama Avenue West where the body of the 52-year-old homeowner John Keith Smith was found lying on the floor of the home. Police and investigators quickly began to gather evidence and piece together what could have happened. Officers were quickly able to come up with a crucial piece of the puzzle as they discovered that the victim’s automobile was missing. Officers placed a BOLO on the vehicle of Mr. Smith to area departments. The missing vehicle was located quickly near Stonewall Road in Auburn, Alabama. A suspect and passenger were quickly arrested and transported to the Lee County Detention facility in Opelika. Since then the suspects who was the nephew of the victim identified as Casey Smith and his girlfriend Amber Hancock have been returned to the Chambers County Detention Facility and over the weekend had their charges upgraded to Continued on 2A By Alton Mitchell The campaign signs that have greeted motorist and pedestrians on Chambers County street corners and billboards are slowly beginning to vanish. Last Tuesday’s Super Tuesday’s results are in and many of the local races have been decided. The biggest race of the day was the presidential primary for both democratic and republican races in the state. The winner of each matched the trends nationally. Alabama Democratic victor proved to be Hilary Clinton who seized 78% of the votes in Alabama. Republican voters selected Donald Trump who held 43% of Alabama’s votes to make him the victor of the Republican primary ticket. Other races had more of an effect locally on Chambers County those included those for Public Service Commission President in which Twinkle Cavanaugh emerged victorious taking 63% over Terry Dunn. One of the biggest local races involved the seat for the United States House for District 3. The highly publicized race was between Mike Rogers and Larry DiChiara as GOP primary candidates. Rogers emerged victorious taking 76% of the vote over DiChiara. The democratic ticket in the race was uncontested and Jesse Smith won by default. The U.S. Senate race in Alabama was also a close one for democrats as Ron Crumpton squared off against Charles Nana. Crumpton emerged victorious taking 56% of the vote over Nana. The Republican ticket was a lot more decorated supporting five candidates in which Richard Shelby emerged victorious. The race for the District Attorney of Chambers County also proved to be a very interesting race in the local area. Valley attorney Bill Harris won the Republican nomination for district attorney of the Fifth Judicial District. Harris easily won with nearly 70% of the vote beating out Damon Lewis. The battle lines were also drawn during the election for the district 2 seat of the Chambers County Commission. In that race Douglas E. Jones beat out Jimbo Brown for the District two seat. In the November election there is no opposition to run against Jones so he will be the new commissioner. The primary results are now in and the signs are coming down only to make room for new signs to take their place as the November election approaches for the final decision on voting in Chambers County and the nation. Lanett basketball captures state title By Staff Reports @lsunnews The Lanett Panthers are the 2016 AHSAA Class 2A state champions following their 73-48 victory over St. Luke’s Episcopal on Friday night in Birmingham. The Panthers got out of the gate fast before allowing a late first half run by St. Luke’s that led to a seven-point halftime lead. The Panther defense would take over during the third quarter, only allowing three points in the period. Lanett outscored their opponent 25-3 during that span to take a 5627 advantage going into the fourth quarter. Senior guard Tavaris Geiger scored nine of those points en route to his 22 point MVP performance. Freshman guard Tye Truitt scored 21 points in the win and sophomore forward Anquavious Pollard added another doubledouble with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Lanett lead would be- come as large as 34 points late in the final quarter. “We were focused, we were ready, we were inspired and we were determined,” said Lanett coach Richard Carter by phone on Monday morning. The realization sinking in that he was the coach of the best 2A team in the state of Alabama. “It really feels good to be state champions,” he said, the only thing about it now is I have to begin to plan for next season.” Geiger, Truitt and Pollard were named to the All-Tournament team along with St. Luke’s Caleb Haynes, Preston Hunter and sophomore guard Mark Wilcox Jr., who scored a game high 25 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Geiger, Christion Goss, Zach Mosley and Savion Ware are the team’s only seniors. The Panthers finished the 2015-16 season with a record of 27-6 and went undefeated in region play. Page 2A THE LAFAYETTE SUN March 9, 2016 Missing car key to tracking down suspects (Cont. from A-1) capital murder. In a recent sit down LaFayette Police Chief Benjamin Hill explained that crime can happen anywhere and LaFayette is not a place that commonly sees a lot of homicides or violent crime, but when it does the LaFayette Police Department is here to help. The words expressed by Chief Hill have been demonstrated twice in the past several months as the murder rate in LaFayette does not carry an unsolved statistic with it. While the closest the First 48 may make it to LaFayette is Atlanta or Birmingham there is still a First 48 that is occurring on a very rare basis in the LaFayette area. LaFayette Police and investigators have answered the call and step up to achieve the best outcomes to offer families of victims some type of closure in homicide situations in the city. What does the President earn By Paul Richardson If you’ve ever wondered, it’s $400,000 per year, paid to him in a monthly installments. Plus he has an annual expense account of $50,000 per year to spend as he sees fit. And if that isn’t enough, everything else he needs, wants, and desires is absolutely free, furnished at tax payer’s expense. Don’t confuse salary with income. While Obama’s salary was $400,000, his income was $790,000. At the end of his term, Obama will retire with an annual pension of $200,000, health care, paid travel, an office, and lifetime Secret Service protection for his entire family. The very first President, George Washington, received $25,000 per year. Not much by today’s standards, but by monetary comparison, that equals to $600,000 in today’s money. Keep Smilin Profiling Carolyn Wheeler By Charlotte Blasingame As you drive through our quaint town I am sure you will notice the different Venues in each storefront, which you can attribute the look to our Keep SMILIN profile this week. Most of you probably know her as she has spent may tireless days working on the presentation of our image to tourist and visitors to our city, Carolyn Wheeler moved to LaFayette in 1951 when her grandfather accepted a job as Principle of LaFayette High School. Living in the country with their parents did not seem to be the proper thing to do for her and her sister so in agreement with their parents they moved with their grandparents to LaFayette to experience the city life. After graduation from high school Carolyn attended and graduated from Auburn University , going on to teach school for 25 years in Alexander City Alabama, served as Administrator of an Assisted Living Home, and also Managing an Antique store she decided to give up on starting a new career. With that being said after retiring she returned home yearning to improve the way downtown LaFayette looked. Working downtown was like stepping back in time states Mrs. Wheeler. In 2009 she spoke to the Rotary Club expressing a desire to present a better image of the Chambers County Seat. She states the purpose of the project was to clean, paint, and do minor repairs, and creating display windows in unoccupied buildings around the square while maintaining the historical character of the facilities. Helping create this image included as many as 100 volunteers on a designated work day around our town, which she added she was very grateful for everyone who participated. Credit is also due to her seven committee members..which this project could have never been completed without their help! During his tenure as Governor, Bob Riley presented the LaFayette Group Storefront Project with a Certificate of Recognition commemorating their group effort on this endeavor . After much thought Carolyn decided in 2011, it as possible, Donations may be made to: LaFayette Cemetery Restoration Committee Mrs. Sara Yancey P.O. Box 564 LaFayette, Alabama 36862 Or calling Mrs. Carolyn Wheeler 256794-3088. Volunteers are always needed and with their support along with contributions to further the upkeep and make improvements of this beautiful historical site. If you have never ridden through our cemetery , I encourage you to and admire the Gazebo, Historical Marker as well as the maintained grounds. In her spare time she enjoys Antiquing, decorating Flower gardening and entertaining. She is married to Nick Wheeler and they live in LaFayette. Until next week Keep SMILIN Carolyn Wheeler was time to spearhead another well needed project, where the Group Storefront Project Committee now became the Cemetery Restoration Committee, Our Cemetery is a Historical Encyclopedia to our City Heritage. The LaFayette Cemetery no doubt one of the most beautiful burial sites and one of which to be proud of states Mrs. Wheeler. October 24, 2011 LaFayette Cemetery was added to the Alabama Historical Cemetery Registry. She credits kind hearted Volunteers who really care about our Cemetery for their hard work stepping up and helping to maintain its beauty. Donations are needed to keep this hallowed resting place for our loved ones as beautiful and well kept Pictured above is JoAnne Hunter. Her picture was left out of last week’s Keep Smilin Profile. daily. She would love to be able to win enough money to support Ministries that serve Christianity. Alabama is short 157 million dollars ($157,000,000) to fund Medicaid. Some legislators think that a state sponsored lottery would help generate enough funds to cover this short fall. This is especially an issue since many of the Alabama residents are buying lottery tickets in the surrounding states. Alabama already has the Indian casinos that operate in Alabama who are exempt from state laws prohibiting gambling. According to one of the Alabama Senators, the Indian Casinos do not fund any of the State Of Alabama fiscal needs. Of course they pay ad valorem taxes and employee taxes just as any other businesses do, but pay no percentage of earnings as the surrounding states’ games-of-chance are subject to. The same is to be said for Victory Land. It provided good employment opportunities for locals and paid business taxes. However, they were not subject to pay a percentage of the gambling receipts to the State. I tell you what, I will report to you later about the Georgia Lottery. Meantime, I need to check in with Trump to get all the facts related to gambling. He knows more about the odds of gambling than all the other wanna-bees. Wanna Bet By Bill Frazer Wanna bet? It is a hot topic in Alabama. And sure as “a gun is iron” , the legislature is going to let the voters decide if they want to gamble. It is common knowledge that Alabama citizens are flocking to border states to place their bets. Geneva County State Representative said a constituent spent a few minutes counting cars with Alabama tags funneling into a lottery sales store across the state line into Florida. During the Powerball jackpot he counted 31 cars with Alabama license plates parked in the lottery store parking lot as he went in to the store. It is not only Florida, but if you enter out Alabama into Georgia you will note that most of the lottery ticket buyers are Alabama residents. This is true in all the surrounding states as gamblers flock into Tennessee and Mississippi as well. The Alabama legislature has a majority of Republicans who represent the evangelicals. Gambling (and that’s what the lottery is) is not considered by many Christians to be sinful. However, the Bible does mention “casting lots' for Jesus's clothes while he was hanging on the Cross. No question about it, if you are risking assets that your family could use purchasing needed items, it is a sin. And there in is the problem, a high percentage of welfare recipients are spending discretionary funds on the lottery. The people who struggle are hoping for a windfall when buying lottery tickets yet the odds are 7-1 that they will lose. The gambling issue has been a controversial issue ever since the country was settled. In early years my extended family played Bolieta which was an illegal lottery. Bolieta was a scam where an agent would go door to door selling tickets and arrange that periodically one of the participants would pass the word around that they had won a huge cash prize. When we took cotton to the gin in my youth, I would always try to have a nickel to go over to Wilson's gen- eral store to buy a coke and a dime to try to win on the punch board. I assumed the punch board was legal or it would not be used publicly. It became enticing as I would hear from friends that Joe Doe had won a big prize on the punch board. My wife always participates in the Publishing Clearance House offers (which I consider a scam). Often you see advertisements on the tube showing this family opening the door to a representative telling them that they have won $7,000 per week for the rest of their life. I do not consider that to be sinful as she is carrying out her wish to be able to provide to a lot of needed charity requests that she receives in the mail Suckers line that Wanna Bet Local lottery ticket buyers King invites you to come see our professional service teams for all your automotive needs. She’s now the big 50, and frankly, if there is a birthday that we all cringe at, it is this one. To her credit she has taken it quite well. From a guy, however, who has been there and several years past, I provide a few reasons why turning 50 isn’t all that bad. 1. At 50, you can get out of a lot of unpleasant stuff by simply saying you are now too old. I know I have certainly used it to my advantage. When someone asks me to go to a Five Finger Death Punch concert, I simply say I’m not going to embarrass myself by being the oldest person there. Or when I’m asked to go ziplining across the Grand Canyon I evoke my age every time. It works, that is unless you are responding to someone older than you. 2. At 50, you start receiving all kinds of mail from the AARP. If you join you can enjoy all kinds of sweet senior citizen discounts. As for myself, I refuse to join. I can’t bring myself to think others would consider me a senior citizen. 3. At 50 you sud- denly become a fountain of wisdom. Younger people just assume since you have lived so long- and have actually avoided living in a box under a Florida overpass, that you must have valuable insights about living in this complex world. 50 is the perfect age to spout the sage advice your parents once gave you, even though you totally ignored it. Don’t ever admit to actually any of the things you advise against. Remember what happened in Vegas, stays in Vegas. 4. At 50 you become a lot more confident in your views and opinions. Some call it “set in your ways”, but I prefer the word “confidence.” I know as a younger adult, I had difficulty making up my mind or stating my viewpoint because I didn’t want to offend anyone. Now it’s totally different. I don’t really care that I’m set in my ways. And at 50, you can’t get away with it. 5. At 50 you can buy random and useless stuff, because you already have accumulated most of life’s necessities. House, cars, children’s education, etc. are usually purchased after of busting your butt, so now you are free to roam Amazon or Ebay, and buy crap you can’t believe you have lived so many years without. 6. At 50 you have earned the right to “stop sweating the small stuff.” Making dinner, doing laundry, grocery shopping or wearing proper clothing shouldn’t be a cause for angst anymore. That’s why hot pockets, pizza delivery and big sweatshirts were invented. 7. At 50 you’re preconceived notions about aging are tossed out the window. We hear often that 70 is the new 50, well at 50 we start to believe that. No one, in this day and age can tell you when to retire, or when you have to sell your house and downsize. Just saying I never plan to retire and just bought a new house. It’s all about how you think, and I feel at age 50 life is just getting started. All in all I’ve found 50 to be pretty cool. Yes, I now need to have my reading glasses handy at all times, but overall, life can be so much fun when you get older. Tax payer money wasted By Paul Richardson President Obama’s $757 billion economic stimulus program was introduced in 2009 as a way to jump-start the U.S. economy by injecting tax dollars that would stimulate new jobs and growth, especially through spending on new infrastructure like roads and bridges. But hundreds of millions of dollars spent in the program went instead to elderly Filipinos, much of it virtually guaranteed never to make its way back to the U.S. economy. Tucked away in the stimulus was a secret provision to pay $9,000 each to residents of the Philippines who fought alongside the U.S. in World War II. Those who had become U.S. citizens since the war got $15,000. The stimulus payments, called Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation, started in April 2009. More than $225 million has since been paid to more than 18,000 Filipino vets. All the while our Vets go without medical treatment, thousands of our citizens sleep on the streets and go hungry, or eat from trash dumpsters, thousands of our children go to sleep hungry each night as the nation keeps going deeper and deeper in debt. And the reason for the massive debt………? During the same period (from 2009) our government has provided direct cash aid to .... Hamas- $351 M (M for million) Egypt- $397 M, Mexico- $622 M, Russia- $380 M, Jordan- $463 M, Kenya- $816 M, Sudan- $870 M, Nigeria- $456 M, Uganda- $451 M, Congo- $359 M, Ethiopia- $981 M, South Africa- $566 M, Senegal- $698 M, Mozambique- $404 M, Zambia- $331 M, Kazakhstan- $304 M, Tanzania- $554 M, Iraq- $1.08 B, (B for billion) Pakistan- $2 B, Haiti- $1.4 B, All this money and they still hate use, but it doesn’t stop them from asking for more! Remember the fund raising event for the earthquake victims in Haiti on 12 TV Stations? Ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents, clothes, bedding, doctors and medical supplies, and money. And the idiots were still not satisfied. They had the gall to say no one helps as they hold out their hands for more. Just Imagine if our own government gave 'US' the same support they continue to give to foreign countries. Sad isn’t it? Opinions may not necessarily be shared or endorsed by this publication. I believe in signs By Jody Fuller I’d struggled mentally, physically, and emotionally for quite some time when in early December I finally swallowed my pride and went to the VA in Tuskegee. When I returned from my last deployment five years ago, I went to the VA in Birmingham and had a negative experience with my doctor on my initial visit and never returned. My experience in Tuskegee was very different from the start. The enrollment clerk was very pleasant, and, as mentioned in an earlier article, the first available appointment just happened to be the very last slot on Christmas Eve. I truly believe that was a gift from God. That was a sign. I really liked my doctor. When I walked into his office, the first words out of his mouth were “War Eagle.” I was wearing an Auburn jacket. Our relationship was off to a great start. He’d spent 10 years as a flight surgeon in the Air Force. Whether I told him about my migraines, my sleep issues, or my allergic reactions to Bama fans, he was there to help me. Unlike the guy in Birmingham, he actually cared. His name was Dr. Canfield, and he would have been my primary care physician from that point on, but he was getting ready to retire from the VA. As far as I know, that was his last day of work. Perhaps it wasn’t, but it was the last time I saw him. I’m just glad I got into the system with him. That was a sign of good things to come. He told me he was opening a private practice in Auburn. I wish I’d gotten his number. Two months later, after years of procrastination, I visited the Veterans Service Office at the Lee County Courthouse. If I was just looking for a check, I would have been there years earlier, but after all my years of service including three tours in Iraq, it was time. The aches and pains, mental and physical, were almost too much to bear at times. Some of my peers had begged and pleaded for me to go. I had a great meeting with the veterans service officer and had actually met him years ago before he held this po- sition. That, too, was a good sign. Later, I drove through downtown Opelika and stopped at Dorris Sign Co. to talk to my friend LaGina about having T-shirts made. I believe in figurative signs, but they believe in literal signs. It’s what they do, and they do a great job. We looked at different colors and different styles, and then she pointed at one hanging on the far end of the wall. I walked down to take a look. It was a nice T-shirt, but that’s not what caught my attention. I looked down on the table in front of me. It was a sign—literally and figuratively. It was the only sign there, and it could have been made any day in the past or any day in the future. In fact, I don’t know when it was made. The only thing I know is that I didn’t have to stop that day and he could’ve used any sign company in the area. The sign was for Dr. Canfield. VERY IVER ELIV DELI FREE DE Quality is something that means a great deal to Bedele and Doug Clark, the owners of Clark Interiors in Lanett. Quality is the foundation of their business and, in fact, it’s why they opened Clark Interiors in the first place. For years, the Clarks worked in the fu urniture business. Some of their experiences included working with chains that sold cheaper products. For the Clarks, the problems that accompanied these products far outweighed the financial benefits. So they made a big decision in 1989. They decided to “risk it all,” and open their own store. Clark Interiors was born. Now, 27 years later, Clark Interiors is thriving off that vision of quality that led Bedele and Doug to open the business. It’s not just quality product that sets Clark Interiors apart from otherr fu urniture stores, it’s quality service; from the moment you walk into the showroom the Clark Interiors family is there to help you every step of the way. Their products are top of the line, including La-Z-Boy, Bassett, Craftmaster and Restonic bedding. And this isn’t your ‘mail-order’ chain store where you have to wait two or three weeks to get what you picked out in the store. At Clark Interiors, the product you select is delivered from stock, often times on the same day as you make the purchase. Bedele is a first-rate decorator and her advice is ava v ilable to all Clark Interiors customers at no cost. Delivery is always free and Clark will service every item they sell. You may assume that because Clark Interiors off ffeers the highest quality products, that the prices are high. But that’s what makes Clark Interiors so unique. They off ffeer superior merchandise and service beffore and after the sale, at prices that are comparable to the lesser quality items “o “on sale” at other stores. This is just the beginning of what will be an interesting time for Whitlow’s parents Pamela Whitlow Holloway and Terrence Holloway, who consider all the attention her son has been receiving to be “a blessing.” The family got a chance to meet with the coaches and get a tour of not only the UAB campus but the spot where the university is supposed to build a new facility. With visits to bigger, more established programs coming up later this month and next, a lot of schools will have to show their cards early if they want to stay in contention for Whitlow’s services. UAB’s 2017 class is going to be the foundation and with the new facilities being built, this is a very interesting opportunity,” said Terrence Holloway. “Today was a good experience but we have a few more to go.” think it’s a great opportunity for him, the coaches seem close, like family.” Mom, Pamela Whitlow Holloway agrees, “I like it, it’s a good school.” UAB has much more to offer Whitlow than just an opportunity to play Division 1 football however. “I like how the coaches stressed academics,” said Terrence Holloway. “They talked about all of the tutoring opportunities Boobie could take advantage of as a freshman.” And what does Whitlow think. “[UAB] has a good football program, the campus and the academics are good too,” he said by phone Saturday night. “The coaches were debating if I was going to play on both sides of the ball if I can there.” By STAFF REPORTS/ @LSUNNEWS Bulldogs going through early season struggles The LaFayette Bulldogs baseball team has gotten off to a rough start this season, losing all of their three games this season -twice to Valley and at Wadley- but are making strides according to their coach. “I see a lot of positives with the kids and we may not have had success as far as wins [thus far] but we’re adding pieces to the puzzle,” says head coach Michael Pattillo who also coaches on James Lucas’ football staff at LaFayette High. Pattillo has seen steady improvement at the plate and in particular in the field. “In the Wadley game I saw a lot of improvement,” he said by phone on Sunday afternoon. “We put the ball in play and made plays we were sup- posed to make in the infield and outfield. We even turned a double-play.” The Bulldogs have five middle schoolers and four freshmen on the roster this season. Help is on the way though, r egular contributors and seniors Quentin Ray, a Union College (Ky.) football signee and LaCharles Turner are back on the team after the conclusion of basketball season. Ray, third base, and Turner, catcher, will both be on the active roster for the entirety of the regular season. “One thing I have this season that we may not have had in past seasons are kids that want to play and want to win,” said Pattillo. The addition of Ray and Turner have also ratcheted up the battles for playing time with younger players. “The younger kids are responding in practice and raising the competition level,” says Pattillo. The Bulldogs hosted regional foe Beulah on Tuesday, March 8 and play Reeltown at home on Wednesday, March 16. Before traveling to Horseshoe Bend on March 17 to start a home-and-home with the Generals. Horseshoe Bend will play at LaFayette on Wednesday, March 23. Baseball seasons are marathons and coach Pattillo knows it. “Our kids can tell they’re getting better, we are getting a chance [this season] to play a lot of young players and it will benefit the program down the road,” said Pattillo. If I write a story about a particular Bulldogs players, or in one case a particular fan, I get Facebook and Twitter feedback on how there needs to be more written about another player or other fans. Damned if I do, damned if I don’t. “Dear Mr. Suggs, why don’t you write more about Chambers Academy?,” said one email. “I understand that you’re new around here, but why don’t you write more about Lanett football?,” said another letter. Just last week I received notification via Facebook regarding my story on the Story family and on a separate story I wrote on Lanett High School state AHSAA 2A state championship coach Richard Carter. The commenter’s complaint: Why so much newspaper attention on Lanett folks? My answer to that: People are people and if their stories interest me and I feel like they will be inspiring to The LaFayette Sun readership -some of whom live in Lanett (Gasp?)- then I’m going to write those stories. My job is to document the happenings of the ath- letes, their coaches and their families within CHAMBERS COUNTY. With the help of Advertising Director and sometime photographer Brooke Colley, I will try to make our sports section and Twitter feed (FOLLOW @lsunnews) your go-to place for all things city of LaFayette and Chambers County sports. Let’s use this week’s section for example; there is a story on LaFayette High School quarterback JaTarvious Whitlow, stories on LaFayette High School baseball and Chambers Academy baseball and softball Hang in there with me Chambers Academy, bear with me LHS, stick with me Chambers County. I love what I do and try to bring that passion to the Sun’s sports section every week. I’m going to make a better effort of being in town more often -at baseball games and at track meets- and hope to be able to sit with you and talk about what you like most about the paper and what you think stinks (hopefully nothing). Newspapers are a huge part of my life and my ultimate goal is to make the LaFayette Sun a bigger part of yours as well. Follow me on Twitter at @suggswriter and the Sun at @lsunnews and on Facebook. Even the south has had a winter to remember, featuring killer storms that have just kept coming. Now it’s time to look past wintry blasts to sweet spring, the season of new life; the gentle time of the year, the season of love, Good Friday and Easter. Flowers and colorful blossoms are about to break forth in all their splendor, speaking of God’s love of beauty and His provision of these for us all. But what if this breathtaking display that bursts forth every year during the delightful season called spring went unappreciated because we lacked the ability to take it in? What if our reception of these wonders was only in black and white? Not a chance! The Creator’s plan is complete, providing both natural beauty and the human capacity to enjoy and appreciate it. We can also learn from it. Jesus urged those who were worried about financial problems to consider the beauty given to lilies in spite of their lack of labor (Matthew 6:26-27), teaching them to trust rather than tremble during tough times. Then there is Solomon’s enduring poetic description of spring: “For, lo, the winter is past, the rain (or snow) is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of the birds is come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in the land” (Song of Solomon 2;11-12). The first day of spring is always special to me. I start the countdown at the beginning of each New Year and have generally reported the number of days until spring to my congregations each week until it arrived. I once received a letter from a family of former members asking how many days remained until spring. Spring declares death can only win for a season and that life is always waiting in the wings to take the stage, so I keep trying to spread the good news. “There are only a few more days until spring,” I tell people I meet. And you should see the looks I get. “That’s only on the calendar,” some say, wondering how I can be so upbeat about the arrival of spring before the weather is spring like. My reply is simple: when we enjoy the anticipation of spring, we’ll feel the balmy breezes and breathe in the aroma of flowers before they bloom. Expectation enhances experience. Dwight L. Moody, the nineteenth century’s most famous evangelist said, “After December 31st, winter’s back is broken.” At the end of every year, this man of faith saw spring hurrying on its way to arrive on time: beautiful, life announcing, spring. A moving line of composer John W. Peterson’s song “I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES” must have been inspired by his delight in the Designer’s spring extravaganza: “I’ve seen the lily push its way up through the stubborn sod; I believe in miracles for I believe in God.” I do too. Please make plans to attend and bring a friend.. Don't forget to set your clock forward 1 hour this weekend! Until next week 1.2 million voted 1.2 million people showed up to vote in Alabama for the SEC Primary. That's the biggest number the state has ever seen in a presidential primary. Secretary of State John Merrill believes the presidential candidates, and their stops in Alabama, went a long way to getting more people to the polls. “We would attribute it to the SEC Primary,” Merrill Says. “We attribute it to the enthusiasm that our people demonstrated as the presidential candidates came to our state, as they interacted with our people. When all of the lead candidates had multiple visits to Alabama, interacting with our people on a personal level, making sure that they got to know them, understanding their philosophies and ensuring that they would participate.” Storms delayed the reporting of some numbers from Hale, Tallapoosa, and Macon Counties. Merrill says the numbers were counted before election workers went home Tuesday night, but were unable to be uploaded to this website. The grand jury that indicted Gray last month also did grant a bond in the amount of $2,000,000. Gray has not yet met that bond and remains in the Chambers County Jail. At Monday’s hearing it was decided that trial date will be set soon for Gray in connection with the case. It may be a timeframe of 6 months to a year before the case goes to trial. Young Jr. Gray is accused of the murder of a young Georgia woman who was found in a Valley creek in July dead after going missing for several days before. Last month a grand jury indicted Gray for the murder of Renee Eldridge. Renee Eldridge was a young woman from Columbus, Ga who went missing early on July 5th from a home in Columbus. Officials with the NWS searched an area north of Opelika and South of LaFayette near Oak Bowery Road and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course the trail of damaged extended to an area near Andrews Road in Lee County. Officials from the NWS did see enough signs to support their theory and announced that a small tornado with a rank of an EF0 had touched down in that area. The EF-0 rating means that winds with the tornado reached speeds up to 70 mph. luckily with the storm there was no major damage in the area and no injuries most of the damage was confined to downed trees and limbs and some scattered debris in the area. Springtime is right around the corner and in the spring months tornadoes become more numerous with strong style storm cells in this region of the country. Chambers County Extension News By Ken McMillan-Chambers County Extension Coordinator Get moving more!!!!! In our busy lifestyles of work, family, and other responsibilities it seems hard to find the time for physical activity. According to Regional Extension Agent Sheree Taylor, science-based research indicates there are numerous benefits of physical activity for any age, size, or gender. Just because you don’t want to lose weight doesn’t mean you don’t need to get moving! Here are some benefits of moving more: •Increase your chances of living longer •Feel better about yourself •Decrease your chances of becoming depressed •Sleep well at night •Move around more easily •Have stronger muscles and bones •Stay at or get to a healthy weight •Decrease risk of Heart Disease, stroke, & diabetes Even if you only receive one of these great benefits… your life can improve! More than likely, you can receive several of these benefits… from the same physical activity effort. We must use all of our time wisely in order to incorporate the needed 30 minutes a day (for adults) and 60 min of play (for youth). Here’s one way to make this actually happen: While your kids are at sports practice, walk around the field or the parking lot, take 10 or 15 min- utes of your lunch break to walk around the facility, & walk your neighborhood with your family after dinner. Start small and increase your time and distance each week, or as tolerated. You want moderate/vigorous activity. Moderate activity is when you can talk while doing the activity, but you can’t sing! Vigorous activity is when you can only say a few words without stopping to catch your breath. We should make 10,000 steps a day. You can download many free apps to your smart devices; use them to see how many steps you’re taking each day! Make realistic goals for yourself; music is always a plus to help you to get moving more.
