Good news for our beleaguered hospitals! The North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) has announced that it will be investing more than $8 million in infrastructure upgrades to local hospitals throughout Northeastern Ontario. The funding comes from the Ontario government’s $52 million Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund, which allows hospitals to decide where to invest the money and lets them proceed quickly with projects. Each hospital is to receive a grant of at least $175,000. The purpose of the funding is to help Hospitals do structural upgrades such as new roofing or windows, as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems improvements and other updates. Other improvements may include upgrading backup generators and fire alarm systems, to ensure that all hospitals comply with health and safety standards. The Island Clippings has made inquiries about how much of the Sault Area Hospital’s ‘windfall’ will be spent on improvements to the Matthews Memorial and Thessalon hospital sites. At the time we had to close off for printing this week’s issue, we had been informed by a SAH official that “significant funding” had indeed been earmarked for the two satellite hospitals, although specifics would have to follow when he returned to his office. We’ll continue to follow this story and provide more details as they become available. While John was shopping for pet supplies, one of the salespeople came running up to him. “John! John! Hero and Zero My “thanks” to the Zero who picked up a snapping turtle and brought it to the ball diamond by the hockey rink this past week, for the kids to see and poke at with bats and bottles. I am not happy that its protection under the “Species at Risk in Ontario” (SARO) was ignored. I am saddened by its transport to this kids’ sporting event and subsequent harassment. Two acres including shore lot with 2 summer cottages. 129 feet of private sandy beach. New septic, well, plumbing and wiring. Needs some updating $129,900. Hilton Beach, beside trailer park. Moving it off the roadway would have been enough to save it from being struck by another vehicle. Going the extra step and bringing it to the kids for genuine exposure to this species for their viewing enjoyment will not be forgotten. For this you are a Hero. ‘Bravo’, What next? A porcupine, or maybe some crane chicks to poke at? [email protected] OLIVER & ASSOCIATES REAL ESTATE BROKERAGE INC. The lack of respect for this species of turtle, that cannot retract its head into its shell for protection is almost as shameful as blaming those who wanted to protect it during and after the kids’ event. If someone in the community does not understand the consequences of bringing wild species to kids’ events, or their protection outside of a legal hunting season, it is up to the community to educate them. The attempt to do so the other night was ignored. All names withheld by request I sland Lumber C o m pa n y LT D . The bunnies are back and the birds are doing their thing. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for resigning from The Matthews Memorial Hospital Association and The 1812 Committee. I have been advised to reduce the stress in my life. Both groups are interesting and important to this Island and I am sorry to have to give them up. But back to the Museum, I would like to update you on the Workshop Project. Last year Gloria Matthews generously donated the money to build a much needed workshop in memory of her husband Stephen Matthews. With the board’s support, Bucky Garside’s professional assistance, Soo Mill’s donation of $350.00 worth of materials and Mark Henderson’s generous offer to install the workshop free of charge, we are beginning the construction of what I believe will be a big asset to your museum. We will be able to restore and treat artifacts, hold workshops and make room in the drive shed for more artifacts. We have had to use space in there for storage of damaged artifacts for the last 10 years. I am looking forward to a busy exciting season at the museum. Tea Day is our first event on Sunday July 10th. We will be paying tribute to the Anishinaabe People and unveiling the Ceremonial Wolf Robe donated to the museum by Sally Hooke in 2008. Sally and I have been waiting patiently for this. As our Tea Day Tributes are planned well in advance, we have had to wait until 2011. The Teddy Bear Picnic is our second event on Sunday July 23rd. Lots of fun, games and educational events planned. Hopefully Smokey the Bear will be back if he isn’t fighting fires. A Window Through Time is our third event on Sunday August 6th. Thanks to Cheryl Alloway who writes, produces, and directs, a short theatrical performance based on the actual history of St. Joseph Island. Cheryl and her friends and family plan and execute the Color Your World & SHOPARE! SPRING COMP entire event. It was such a success last year she has written a new one for this year. Plaza Home Decorating Centre Day Camp will be on August 18th this year. We will have some fun new activities to add this year. These special events, along with our membership drive and the Log of Recognition are an essential part of the fun, success, and popularity of your museum. So mark your calendar with the above dates and plan to take part in a fun filled summer at the museum. Landscaping for cottages and seasonal homes in the St. Joseph Island area LAST WEEK, one of St. Joseph Township’s grass cutters noticed something strange in the deep grass ahead of where she was cutting. She stopped and got off her riding mower to check it out. And it’s a good thing she did! This little critter was barely visible but thanks to the young lady’s alertness, escaped any harm. AS PART OF ITS LABOUR DISPUTE with Canada Post, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers’ (CUPW) has adopted a strategy of national 24 hour rotating strikes, rather than have the entire country victimized by simultaneous strike action. To date, the union has targeted Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal, Moncton and Victoria. The Island Clippings will continue publishing as usual during this uncertain time. Should CUPW’s strike action affect our area, (and we learn about it in time), we will deliver the Clippings to stores and outlets on the Island and the nearby North Shore, where our readers can pick them up.
