Denhsam was chasing the magic fivesecond number for his Camaro, but pulled up just short with a 6.014-second pass at 240.59 mph. “We just missed it by that much,” laughed Densham. "If we broke it then that didn’t matter as long as we put on a show, we would just put it back in the trailer and fix it for its next run when we get back home, we wanted to put on a show and that was the main priority.” “That last run was perfect,” Densham said of his own performance, “it just ran really great so to miss out that little bit was a bit disappointing but that is how it goes…. “I love coming here and I really hope I can come on down again, Harris was brilliant, all the Aussie racers were, in an ideal world I would like to bring my big Nitro car back here and race these guys, but we will just have to see – I hope so!” Fred Dwyer photo [1/20/10] Columns - Bowtie Bytes - Page 1 of 1 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 DOWNSIZED CHEVROLET CARS HEADLINE DETROIT AUTO SHOW The Aveo Show Car may also be the next generation of the Holden Barina, manufactured in Australia. The Olympic-style portion of the event, which pitted all of the NASCAR and NHRAS stars running two passes against the clock on the 20turn course on historic Mount Van Hoevenberg, will be shown at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 24. The NHRA versus NASCAR Challenge will air one week later at 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 31. This year's race featured Morgan Lucas, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Melanie Troxel, Shawn Langdon, Boris Said, Todd Bodine, Joey Logano, Phillip Morris, George Brunnhoelzl III and Carl Renezeder. The charity event supports the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project, which makes bobsleds for the athletes on the U.S. men's and women's teams. NASCAR legend Bodine conceived the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project more than a decade ago after watching U.S. athletes struggle to compete with old, used sleds from their European rivals. Bodine contracted racecar designer Bob Cuneo of Chassis Dynamics in Oxford, Conn., to create "Made-in-America" bobsleds for the United States men's and women's national teams. Since switching to Bo-Dyn sleds, U.S. athletes have risen to the top of the sport, winning multiple Olympic and World Cup medals in both two-man and four-man competition. LPG and CNG can be less expensive to use than gasoline. They burn so cleanly that the fuels are used on work vehicles indoors, such as forklifts inside warehouses. Conventional gasoline internal-combustion engines can be modified to run on CNG or LPG relatively inexpensively. But those fuels contain less energy than gasoline, so a vehicle has to have a bigger fuel tank to go the same distance. Full-size trucks have enough room to tuck in a big tank. Some trucks, mostly heavy duties, are already CNG or LPG powered. The GM standard-duty (aka "light duty") trucks can be converted by aftermarket companies. Lukes said GM-built engines for LPG and CNG would have "hardened valve seals and so forth for long-term durability. You could have trouble at 70,000 - 80,000 miles if you don't have the proper materials," he added. Lukes likes not only the lower cost and lower emissions of LPG and CNG, but also the fact it's another fueling alternative: "These days, we need a diverse fuel portfolio." ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT In other news, General Motors Co. has approved a major update of its full-size pickups. The move will cost GM several hundred million dollars. Redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups will feature new exteriors and interiors, as well as better aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. The updated trucks are two or three years away from showrooms. The pickups have not been updated since 2006, but GM, which emerged from bankruptcy last summer with $50 billion in federal aid, wants to be more competitive in that segment even as it introduces several new small cars and crossovers. Industry-wide pickup sales fell 28.8 percent last year, underperforming the market, which dropped 21.2 percent, according to Autodata Corp. GM's approval of a truck lineup update came quickly. GM's truck committee approached Tom Stephens, GM's vice chairman of global product operations, on a recent Tuesday with a request for more money to update the lineup. Stephens took the request to Whitacre and the executive committee on a Friday and the truck team got the money a week later, Fosgard said. Jim Campbell, general manager of GM’s Chevrolet division, is overseeing a brand that makes up 61 percent of GM’s sales and is planning to roll out the highly touted Volt electric car later this year. The Volt carries a lithium ion battery that can be recharged at a standard wall outlet or through the operation of an on-board, gasoline powered generator. “We’re working with utility companies to bring them on board early so they can help us provide the best ownership experience to consumers as far as recharging their vehicles and using the infrastructure. If (consumers) want to use the plug in their garage they can do it, but if they want to upgrade to a 240-volt outlet they could do that as well. And then how much infrastructure do we need beyond people’s homes? That’s why we’re working with some of these utility companies: to prepare.” The first lithium ion battery rolled off the assembly line in December. But in February of ’67, this new class was launched at the Pomona Fairgrounds racetrack. It was an auspicious introduction, save for the fact there were no existing National Records for these classes against which handicaps could determined when matching various classes at the starting line. So NHRA was left to establish their own “handicaps” as derived from factory advertised horsepower ratings into what were termed elapsed time “indexes” for each SS class. As might be imagined, this approach provided a somewhat open door to the car companies for making certain their entries performed as close to these elapsed time benchmarks. Add to this the fact that Ford, Chrysler and GM clearly saw the new Super Stock class as fertile rows of plowed ground into which to plant their upcoming marketing seeds on branding, in the vein of linking on-track performances with new car sales. In a nutshell, that was the landscape. We now switch our focus to the Wednesday before Thursday’s kick-off of the ’67 NHRA Winternationals. The NHRA called it their “press day” and had historically invited dozens of performance enthusiast media staff to participate in a day of at-the-track activities, including opportunities to make quarter-mile passes in one of several stock vehicles provided by the major car companies, notably Ford for that particular year. You can visualize the scene that amounted to a collection of wannabe drag racer automotive scribes given a chance to “dial in” a batch of stock cars and then compete heads-up among their peers for a modicum of prizes. This, combined with track-side food and exposure to a few OEM seminars intended to flavor post-race coverage in an assortment of magazines and trade papers, pretty much describes the format. ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT No, that’s not accurate. There was more. The presence of Ford and Chrysler at the event was significant by virtue of having built cars transported to Pomona and stuffing them with highly skilled and notable drag race drivers to become a part of the event’s mix. The likes of Ronnie Sox, Don Nicholson, Gas Ronda, Don Grotheer, Ed Terry, Dick Landy, Hubert Platt and other such drivers were under factory contracts to drive these new NHRA entries in the equally-new SS classes. Technically Speaking - Legal Cheaters... - Page 1 of 2 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 In fact, Ford and Chrysler (particularly Ford) had built cars for specific SS categories, strategically placing them throughout the classes to help ensure an eventual Eliminator win. Part of their intended success was based on the fact that virtually all of these cars could perform below their respective NHRA indices, so running near or at these limits would further help guarantee an overall win. All combined, that was the overall landscape on the Wednesday being described. ADVERTISEMENT But here was something Ford hadn’t contemplated. Hubert Platt (the “Mouth of the South”) and I had become friends. As the then-Editor of HOT ROD Magazine, I had gotten to know him because of his penchant for reaching out to various media staff and befriending them as routine. That is not to suggest Hubert wasn’t likeable, genuine or talented. He was all of that. It was simply the basis for his asking me late in the day, just prior to when the track was shut down and all other media events had been concluded, if I’d like to make a pass in his factory-built Super Stock Mustang. As any fool could plainly see (I certainly did), this was a rare opportunity to experience a factory-built Super Stocker. While I don’t recall my e.t. in retrieving a helmet from the truck of my car, suffice to say I was back to Hubert and his Mustang in short order. The car was an automatic, so the risk of screwing up the transmission was minimal. Hubert pointed out some of the other little nuances, punctuated by a few details about how he perceived making the run. We adjusted the belts and seat proximity to the steering wheel and he strapped me in. Keep in mind this isn’t Funny Car land. If memory serves, the car’s NHRA index was around a mid-10-second e.t. Hubert knew I’d driven quicker, so his arm pits weren’t a bit damp from sending me off in his new racer. He departed to the starting line and I began rumbling up through the pit lanes, void of any other cars in the area. As I made my way to the burn-out area, I noticed the throttle pedal travel seemed a bit short. In fact, it almost felt somewhat restricted. So I groped around between it and the floorboard surface, only to discover a small block of wood wedged between the pedal and floor. Virtually without thinking (honestly), I removed the plug and put on the seat beside me, all the while idling up to the staging area. ADVERTISEMENT Turns out Hubert (not NHRA’s long-time starter, Buster Couch) had picked up the starting tree controls and was inviting me into the staging beam. The car left hard and, like on a rail, made a full pass. I drove it well past the last speed light and began braking for a turnaround. At the moment, what I didn’t know was that Bernie Partridge, a principle NHRA announcer at National events, had just voiced my e.t. and speed over the PA system…which I obviously had not heard. As I made the turn onto the return road, two Ford passenger cars were coming toward me on that same road… at speed. Out the window of one of them was the frantically waving arm of Hubert, urging me to stop his Mustang in its tracks… which I did. Hurrying to the car he breathlessly told me I’d just run almost four-tenths of a second under his index which was probably going to remove any competitive cushion he’d have in the Class and Eliminator. With no prior knowledge, I’d virtually eliminated one of Ford’s key cars from being competitive. However, Hubert managed to wade through his class and ended up getting beat in the Eliminator… by another Mustang. I never knew what happened to that little block of wood. I would’ve had it mounted and sent to Hubert. But on second thought, his retaliation might not have been as much fun as the run itself. Technically Speaking - Legal Cheaters... - Page 2 of 2 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 BOWTIE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER By Jon Van Daal While the majority of North America has been suffering one of the worst icy winters in some time, Australia has been hit with unprecedented scorching temperatures and catastrophic fire warnings. The nation’s capital, Canberra has not immune, but the recent Summernats, Australia’s largest street machine show, saw scorching action of a different kind as Jon Van Daal explains. Now in its 23rd year, the Summernats car festival would go close to being one of the largest outdoor high performance shows outside America. Held over four days in early January, some 1750 cars, trucks, street rods and Summernats specials took part in this unique acceleration circus. I say circus because it literally is a ten ringed high horsepowered hippodrome. This sees hundreds of entrants pitting themselves and their cars against each other while completing a myriad of automotive disciplines. The beauty of the Summernats is that you can see all manner of cars including the Chevy based products of Gil Stoken and Joe Psaila. Stoken’s blue ’70 Chevelle SS is seen here driving around in the Supercruise and is in complete contrast to Psaila who won Top Sedan with his yellow and white ’58 model FC GM-Holden. A purpose built burnout pad with massive bleachers hosts the cream of the crop when it comes to tyre screaming burnout competitions. This strip of asphalt also hosts a go to whoa contest to see who is the best at accelerating from a standing start to stopping on a dime at the finish-line at the far end of the track. The one with the shortest time is the winner and you don’t have to have the most powerful car on the property. There are also three different grass events – Grab A Flag, Motokhana and Slalom. Unlike the white smoke that wafted all weekend long over the bitumen, it was the brown bull dust that obscured a range of entries. While some thought it an excuse to carve up the grass others took it seriously and recorded ever lower times. In the Elite Hall the best of the best were lined up to go under the judges’ scrutiny. Sponsored by Meguiars and the House of Kolor, twelve brand new cars were revealed to the immense crowd on Friday night of the Summernats festival. Star of the show was former Top Fuel and Funny Car racer and team owner, Graeme Cowin, who debuted his street registered 1970 King Kong Plymouth Barracuda. Bowtie Thunder from Down Under - Page 1 of 6 - MaxChevy.com Greg Young in his ’67 Chev Impala sedan is one of the few competitors who had competed at all twenty three Summernats events. Despite his copilot getting excited he had to settle for a runner up position in the Burnout Masters bracket. Volume V, Issue 1 The number plate is meant to say it all on but for Steven Loader January 20, 2010 ADVERTISEMENT where there’s smoke there’s fire. As the ’69 GM - Holden sedan went through its paces in trying to qualify for the finals, a fuel line was ruptured and the car went up in flames. This car is, dare I say it, “sex on wheels” as thousands drooled over its wonderous lines and retro feel. It ended up winning a bunch of trophies including the best of the bunch – “Top Judged elite”. “I don’t know what to say”, a clearly overwhelmed Cowin explained. "I built this car for myself but to see it win all these awards is just unbelievable,” he went on to say. I first met Graeme in 1971 and in close to forty years I have never seen him so lost for words – a great result for someone who has won everything in Australian drag racing. The Hall held the Top Sixty cars and this saw cars as diverse as a bone stock FB model GM-Holden to Cowin’s metal masterpiece. The Shockwave GM-Holden extended cab SUV added some real heat to a already blisteringly hot day. This unique vehicle still retains its original engine and driveline so in addition to setting the world on fire he can park it once the candle goes out. Bowtie Thunder from Down Under - Page 2 of 6 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 The ultimate prize at the Summernats is the Grand Champion’s sword, and this award is one that is really earned. In addition to doing well in the Elite Hall, anyone going for the trophy must also do well in a series of driving events. Unfortunately for the Cuda, with the engine cutting out it didn’t do well enough to win this award. Joe Lore, on the other hand, did well across the board and his Ford Falcon XY sedan amassed enough points to hoist the sword above his head. His gorgeous purple cloaked blown and stroked 383 Ford was the hit of the event. Talking of car displays, each day hundreds of cars were displayed on the grass in the centre of the showground arena. It was a smorgasbord of automotive artistry with over the top street freaks lined up against rat rods and beautifully restored stock-as-a-rock production cars of yesteryear. The cars were not the only stars as many fans wore unique outfits to express their love of a particular marquee. The GM-Holden sedan of Mark Nuessler was one of a number of entries vying to win the Burnout trophy. Despite doing a solid job of frying the tyres here he ended up gyrating directly into the fence. Talking of beautiful, the highest prize-money for any competition is actually for the young ladies who take part in the Miss Summernats competition that was sponsored by Jack Daniels Tennessee Whisky. The large contingent of ladies were initially pared down to half a dozen and then the Top three with a stunning young lassie by the name of Hayley Swanson from Altona in Victoria taking the winning sash. There were also competitions for a sound off in car audio, airbrush art and even in tattoos. Rare Spares sponsored the Tough Street Awards which saw the meanest of high horse powered street freaks pitted against each other, while at the other end of the spectrum they also sponsored the Real Steel Awards – the best of the best in classic metal street cars. Former Summernats grand Champion, Anthony Fabris was again in attendance with his sweet looking ’55 Chev pillarless hard top. The adage of one’s favourite axe can be applied to this car as it is continually being updated to remain at the forefront of street machine design. There is no doubt that the largest contingent of cars from any marque were Chevys or General Motors, Holden to be precise. This has been GM’s Australian arm over the years and probably accounted for one third of all the entries on the property. While some of the cars on these pages are easily recognisable others aren’t and when it comes down to it a number of you will be scratching your scones because the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car – a legacy of our British right hand drive heritage. Don’t be fooled; these cars are just as well detailed and as powerful as those in chilly northern climes. The event was the brainchild of Chic Henry and with the recent downturn in the global economy and after being at the forefront of the scene for nearly thirty years he thought the time was right to sell the business to new owners. This year we sent one of Max Chevy’s ace lensmen, James Drew, to Irwindale, Calif., with orders to photograph the cool Chevy cars he saw there. He did a great job of that but being a photographer he forgot one thing. He didn’t find out the names of the owners of the cars he photographed. But since the cars were so cool and they were Chevys we decided to run this photo essay of some of the coolest cars he saw. If your car is one shown here shoot us an email and we’ll run the photo of it again in our Bowtie Bytes. So here’s a sampling of some of the bowtie cars that showed at the Mooneyes Xmas Party. They ranged from the shaved, decked and dropped to the basically stock. BLOWN AND BAD This is absolutely the staff favorite of all the ‘54s at the event. From the NACA ducts on the roof, to the blown rat motor filling up the engine compartment, this is a cool ride indeed! ORANGE BABY We believe that this is a ’53 with a ‘54 or ‘55 Olds grill. Chevys at the Mooneyes Xmas Party - Page 2 of 6 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 BLUE IS BLUE GREEN TUTONE Shaved and lowered, and twin “spots” make this a cool cruiser! Lake pipes and shaved door handles and some nice pin striping on the nose sets up this ’54 nicely. PURPLE IN THE RAIN BACK IN BLACK We liked the two-tone purple paint. Boss pin stripes on the hood and the lights are a nice touch. Not sure what’s up with the license plate though. Tudor, slammed with nifty lakes. GANG GREEN LAND BARGE Nice Nova with green flames and, of course, the famous Mooneyes decal. Check out this four-door wagon. Again with the Mooneyes decal in the window. The wheel spokes are plastic taken from a display. A prime pair of panel delivery wagon WHAT CAN BROWN CAN DO FOR YOU? TIDY WHITEY We think this is a ‘34 to ‘36 Chevy panel truck. The dark brown trim below tan paint scheme is really tasty! This all white early 1950’s panel was the forefather the current HHR. We like this one better. The “Fink U’ gassed us. FANTASTIC FIFTY-EIGHT Another four-door, slammed-to-the ground Chevy land barge that caught our eye! Chevys at the Mooneyes Xmas Party - Page 4 of 6 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 CHEVELLE BELLE The 65 Chevelle tudor wagon is clean and sort of green, but really nice. SHOEBOX SHOWOFF You can’t go wrong with basic black and flames. Chevys at the Mooneyes Xmas Party - Page 5 of 6 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 Truckin’! ADVERTISEMENT JUMPING JIMMY There were a lot of GMC/Chevy trucks on display we like this mildly customized example. SPIDERMAN’S BEEN HERE! This GMC features a bitchin’ custom-made hood and tailgate. We also like the “chrome reversed” wheels and “dog dish” hubcaps. Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan is at the front of the #63 Corvette and Corvette Racing team manager Gary Pratt is at the front of the #64 Corvette (Richard Prince/GM Racing) By Rick Voegelin Photos courtesy Corvette Racing Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan has seen it all in motorsports, and he had to rely on every element of that hard-earned experience to navigate through a tumultuous 2009 season. In the midst of a global economic storm, Fehan steered Corvette Racing to the team's sixth win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the successful mid-year introduction of the GT2 version of the Corvette C6.R in the American Le Mans Series. Corvette Racing's 10th anniversary season was a year of transition. The championship-winning GT1 Compuware Corvettes secured a seventh win in the season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 21, and made their farewell appearance in the ALMS in Long Beach, Calif., on April 18. The curtain fell on the GT1 era on June 13-14 with a GT1 victory in Le Mans, France, as Johnny O'Connell, Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia stood on the top step of the podium. Seven weeks later, two newgeneration Corvette C6.Rs made their competition debut in the GT2 class at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. As the team conducted a five-race test program in preparation for a unified GT class in 2010, Corvette Racing posted five podium finishes and notched its first GT2 win at Mosport International Raceway on August 30. In the series' final five rounds, Corvette Racing scored more team and manufacturer points than any other GT2 entry, and O'Connell and Magnussen tallied the most points in the GT2 drivers championship. The season ended with fireworks at Laguna Seca as Magnussen walked away from his battered race car after a high-speed crash on the final lap of the season. Under Fehan's leadership, Corvette Racing has become one of the world's premier production sports car teams. An ardent advocate for the Corvette cause and an icon for legions of faithful Corvette fans; Fehan received the ALMS "From the Fans" award in 2004, 2008, and 2009. In the following Q&A, he looks back at the 2009 season and looks ahead to 2010. Corvette Racing 2009 Review: Doug Fehan Q&A - Page 1 of 3 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 : Looking in the rearview mirror, what stands out in 2009? Doug Fehan: "There were really two parts to the season – our final races in GT1 leading up to Le Mans, followed by the debut of the GT2 program. Our focus was and will always be the 24 Hours of Le Mans. When GM was going through its restructuring, our greatest concern was that some might not understand the importance and significance of that event. It was a heartening moment when we were able to get past that point. "In spite of many uncertainties, the team focused its energy on running the first round at Sebring, which we knew would be a great test of the engineering improvements we'd made in the race cars. And then going to Long Beach, we fulfilled the second half of our mission, which is marketing the Corvette and Chevrolet brands and representing our team sponsors. "Everyone felt the importance of writing the final chapter of GT1 at Le Mans. They dedicated themselves to succeed, and it was absolutely amazing to see them embrace that idea. It fueled their fire because they knew the team was undergoing its most significant challenge, and concurrently they were designing, planning and building the GT2 cars. The preparation was almost as much fun as the race." : And the highlight of the GT2 portion? Fehan: "The win at Mosport. Watching the new cars' first laps at Mid-Ohio and knowing that we'd be competitive was certainly exciting, but the victory at Mosport was overwhelming. It happened much sooner than we expected, and it showed ALMS fans what they have to look forward to in 2010 with competition between Corvette, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, BMW, and Ford. "I think by any measure, the GT2 Corvette introduction was successful. Our objective was to focus on Corvette Racing's core strengths: preparation, durability and reliability. We've learned that is what scores points – it's not always the fastest car that wins races and championships. In five events, we had zero mechanical issues, and the cars were on pace. That was very encouraging." : Surely one of the highlights of 2009 was your stunning victory over Jan "The Flying Viking" Magnussen in the Tour de Road America Bike Ride to Fight Cancer? Fehan: "That certainly ranks right at the top, but in a different category (laughs). We had some fun, and the race benefited a good cause, the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I challenge the pit crews to improve continuously, and the bike race demonstrated to our drivers that there is going to be continuous improvement in their level of physical preparation as well. I mean, they ought to be able to keep up with the program manager!" : On a serious note, what were the lessons learned in Jan's last-lap crash at Laguna Seca? Corvette Racing 2009 Review: Doug Fehan Q&A - Page 2 of 3 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 Fehan: "Unfortunately the hardest lessons you learn in this sport are always safety related. You never want to put your safety systems to the test, but when that moment arrives, it's very reassuring to know that they are validated. That's what we learned at Laguna Seca. "Initially we had concerns about running an aluminum chassis, and we had concerns about how the roll cage was integrated into the chassis. The force of the impact exceeded 50 g's, and yet Jan walked away. When we analyzed the chassis after the crash, the safety systems worked just as they were designed, and the aluminum chassis did a marvelous job of absorbing the energy and protecting Jan from serious injury. "The extent of Jan's injuries was a broken tailbone, which we attribute to the seat design. We have redesigned that part to prevent a reoccurrence in the future, so that is the upside of the incident. Despite the severity of the crash, the crew had the No. 3 Corvette repaired and fully operational within a couple of weeks." : What is the status of the GT-spec Corvette customer car program for 2010? Fehan: "We currently have two customer cars under construction, but we don't yet have confirmed buyers for them. There has been tremendous interest in the GT-spec Corvette C6.Rs, and we think with continued improvement in the global economy, the interested parties will be able to make a commitment. We'd be delighted to see more Corvettes racing in the ALMS or overseas." : While there will be a single GT class in the ALMS in 2010, GT1 will continue in the FIA series and at Le Mans. What's your perspective on the two classes? Fehan: "A year ago, there was general agreement regarding a unified GT class, which we will see in the ALMS in 2010. The intention at that time was to base the FIA GT1 class on GT cars, with limited modifications to the engine and aerodynamics. Since then, however, Europe has encountered the same economic issues that we have faced in the U.S., and many members of the racing community understandably wish to retain their current cars for financial reasons. Consequently some of the older GT1 cars will now be converted to the new regulations, including several privately owned Corvette C6.Rs, and the ACO has invited these cars to participate at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As the economic climate improves, I hope that the decision makers will recognize the benefits of running one GT class at Le Mans and other venues." : Corvette Racing will introduce a production-based 5.5-liter small-block V-8 engine in 2010 in place of the 7.0-liter and 6.0-liter engines used previously. What's the outlook for the engine program? Fehan: "GM Powertrain has completed the initial dynamometer tests of the 5.5-liter small-block V8, and the race team has conducted the first track test with the new engine. We are quite satisfied with its performance level at this point. We plan to continue development and introduce the 5.5-liter engine package in competition at Sebring." : What are Corvette Racing's goals for 2010? Fehan: "The ALMS GT championship and victory at Le Mans." Corvette Racing 2009 Review: Doug Fehan Q&A - Page 3 of 3 - MaxChevy.com Volume V, Issue 1 January 20, 2010 What do you have to say? Primarily used to increase the amount of oxygen available to the engine, intake systems like these also increase power. Cold air has a greater density than hot air, causing aftermarket intakes to improve combustion of fuel by causing the cool air to be captured from outside the engine compartment. They also add a sleek, custom look to the vehicle while improving gas mileage and performance. Two of the new Injen/AMSOIL Diesel Air Intake Systems are available for Chevy Silverados: 2004 - 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 6.6L V8 Diesel (LLY) 2007 1/2 - 2009 Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 Duramax Diesel V8, 6.6L (LMM) Gains of 13-17 horsepower and torque gains of 30-32 have been measured. Injen/AMSOIL Intake Systems feature AMSOIL Ea Air Filters with nanofiber technology. Offering state of the art filtration capacity, Ea filtration also provides excellent protection and air flow. The design of the filter adds to the performance improvements, with the accordion-style filter providing 500% more surface area for maximum air flow to the engine. The Ea filter element is cleanable and reusable, making a substantial difference in cost savings when compared with conventional filters. Several other applications have been dyno-tested for horsepower and torque; vehicles and results can be found at www.amsoil.com .
