Yuken!Teruya!(b.!1973)!is!a!Japanese!artist!who!transforms!the!detritus!of!consumerism!into!sculpture,!using!
unfamiliar!materials!in!a!way!that!elevates!details!typically!overlooked!in!quotidian!life.!!

In! his! ongoing! Notice' Forest' series,! Teruya! transforms! shopping! bags! into! intricate! dioramas.! Mounted! at! a!
ninetyJdegree! angle! to! the! wall,! each! bag! harbours! a! miniature! paper! tree! modelled! to! mimic! different!
species! from! around! the! world.! Teruya’s! work! provides! a! subtle! commentary! on! the! hegemonic! power! of!
consumer! culture! and! its! resultant! impact! on! the! global! environment,! speaking! to! the! inextricable!
dependence!industry!has!on!natural!resources,!and!the!hope!for!their!regeneration!and!replenishment!in!the!
future.!!

Teruya’s!work!is!also!grounded!in!the!consideration!of!culture!and!imperialism.!His!piece!You3I,'You3I'is!hung!
at!the!U.S.!Ambassador’s!house!in!Tokyo,!and!uses!the!traditional!bingata'stenciling!technique!of!Okinawa!–!
the! prefecture! from! which! he! hails! –! to! comment! on! the! American! and! Japanese! military’s! impact! on! the!
island! region.! American! military! aircraft! fly! through! pine! trees,! while! cherry! blossoms! float! through! the!
patterning!suspended!by!parachutes.!!

Since!gaining!his!MFA!at!the!School!of!Visual!Arts!in!New!York!in!2001,!Teruya!has!exhibited!internationally!at!
venues!including!21st!Century!Museum!of!Contemporary!Art,!Kanazawa,!Japan;!The!Ueno!Royal!Art!Museum,!
Tokyo,! and! the! Sydney! Biennale! 2012.! An! extensive! body! of! work! by! the! artist! was! exhibited! in! Paper! at!
Saatchi! Gallery,! London! in! 2013,! with! other! previous! group! shows! including! those! at! the! Guggenheim!
