Condition: Minor scattered retouch, extremely fine scattered craquelure. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, then through descent to the current owner. N.B. Dwight Blaney painted and hunted with fellow artist Frank Benson. In 1891 Benson purchased a small farmhouse at Nauset Marsh in North Eastham, Massachusetts, to use as a hunting cabin. Impressionist painter Lesser Ury was born in Brinbaum, Germany, but moved to Berlin with his family in 1972, following the death of his father. Although he left Berlin to study in Dusseldorf, Brussels, Paris, and Stuttgart, Ury returned there to set up his studio. The city of Berlin provided a constant source of inspiration for Ury, who is best known for his urban landscapes under cloud-filled or moonlit skies. $3,000-5,000 310 123 312. (55.9 x 43.2 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Surface grime. Provenance: From the estates of Mary Ann and Frederick Lippitt, Providence, Rhode Island. N.B. George Hitchcock, son of portrait painter Charles Hitchcock, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended both Brown University and Harvard Law School. By 1877, however, Hitchcock abandoned law, and moved abroad to begin his career as a painter. He studied with Gustave Boulanger at the Academie Julian and then at The Hague. Hitchcock soon settled in the town of Egmond aan Zee, near Amsterdam. There he painted the vibrant and colorful landscapes of the Dutch tulip fields for which he is best known. Egmond developed into an artist’s colony, centered around Hitchcock and fellow American expatriate, Gari Melchers. Although Hitchcock remained in the small town of Egmond for the rest of his career, he was honored internationally; he was elected to the National Academy of Design in New York in 1909, and was a member of Vienna’s Akademie der Bildenden Künste as well as the French Légion d’Honneur. $20,000-30,000 125 316 317 316. Clifford Grayson’s work, most often coastal landscapes filled with figures, blend elements of Realism and Impressionism. A Philadelphia native, Grayson attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before moving to Paris to study with Jean Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux Arts. He returned to Pennsylvania, working and exhibiting there before ultimately settling in Old Lyme, Connecticut. $8,000-12,000 324. John Whorf’s watercolor landscapes capture the light and color of his native Massachusetts. He was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, but is best known for his Boston cityscapes and Provincetown coastal views. Whorf studied at the St. Botolph Studio in Boston and the Boston Museum School. He also studied with Charles W. Hawthorne, whose influence can be seen in Whorf’s use of bold color. Hawthorne also blends varying levels of translucency, alternating light washes with opaque strokes to convey a sense of light and shadow. $5,000-7,000 350 138 351.
