anniversary� It’s an interesting time to reflect on our past
history and how our town has
grown. Business played a great
part of the evolution, especially
when the railroad came to town
and things started to boom�
You can’t help but look back
at the Aurora Chamber of
Paul Smith
Commerce and see how it
evolved over the years. Since 1979, there have been 29
presidents chairing boards made up of other local business
people - all volunteers giving of their time and expertise.
In 1985, the Aurora Chamber opened an office consisting
of a sales trailer obtained by the late councillor Earl
Stewart. Staff was added as the membership increased.
Later the trailer was demolished and the current building
was constructed at the same location – the south end
of town. A huge accomplishment that gave the Aurora
Chamber a home�
Remember the ‘Aurora Money’ of 1992? Created to
boost local business, over 63 merchants participated by
accepting ‘Aurora Money’, printed by the Chamber, as cash
towards purchases.
This year the Aurora Chamber Home Show celebrated 27
years and is one of the best in York Region. In 1995, Ron
Wallace, 2013 Citizen of the Year, thought that a Street
Festival would be a good idea and 18 years later, it is one
on the largest social gatherings of the Aurora Community
with a ‘guess-timated’ attendance of 40,000 or more. Now
that’s a party!
As a business organization, the Chamber keeps its eye on
local and regional issues and is always ready to advocate
on behalf of the membership. We provide education and
opportunities for members to showcase and promote
themselves�
Once again, the Aurora Chamber of Commerce is publishing
its Business Directory and sending it to every household
and business in Aurora. We want you to get to know our
over 700 members. Keep your business directory handy
and whenever you need help at your home or business,
the directory is a good place to start�

I
was at a meeting recently where someone
was speaking about the
history of the Chamber of
Commerce and said it was
and always has been “the
meeting place for business.” These words, describing the largest, most
representative business
organization in the world,
made it come alive�

Although I have been involved with chambers prior
to working here, no one had ever explained where
the name came from and the significance behind it.
In the past, I looked at the name literally meaning
“room of commerce.” The meeting place for
business does make sense because that is exactly
what we are.
The first Chamber of Commerce was created in
Marseilles, France in the early 1600s. In Canada,
chambers pre-date Confederation with the Halifax
Board of Trade opening its doors in 1750.
The local chamber was started in the early 1900s.
It experienced a hiatus in the early 60s and was
rejuvenated by a group of interested business people
in 1979. The Chamber was known as the Aurora
Board of Trade initially with the name changing in
1967 to the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. It is not
part of the Town however; we work closely together
on a number of issues�
Funding for the Chamber comes from revenue raised
through membership fees and special events� The
events help promote the town and bring together
community members, businesses and visitors from
surrounding communities.
The purpose of the Chamber of Commerce has
evolved over time and has adapted to the changing
needs of society. Although time has passed, the
basic premise of the Chamber remains the same
– bringing businesses together to meet, network,
advocate, promote and work together to grow the
local economy�

What is The Aurora Chamber of Commerce?
T
he Aurora Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization with a membership of over
700 businesses. It is a voluntary organization
representing the business community – from
large corporations, to mid-sized businesses and
emerging entrepreneurs – and providing them
with the support they need to grow and maintain
business success�
The Chamber provides numerous services including
educational seminars, networking opportunities,
major events, and cost-saving benefits. As a
member of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and
the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Aurora
Chamber is part of a large network that provides
access to all levels of government�
Businesses join to:
• Have a voice in local affairs

Market their business locally and beyond
•
Take advantage of services such as the
group insurance plan and merchant
services plans
• Connect with the community and other
businesses to increase awareness of their
products and services

On behalf of The Town of Aurora and Aurora Town Council, I would like
to thank the Aurora Chamber of Commerce for its ongoing efforts to
support and enhance our community’s thriving business sector.
Aurora is a vibrant community, blessed with a well-educated and
growing population that supports a broad range of manufacturing,
retail and knowledge-based businesses. Our modern, well-maintained
infrastructure and strategic transportation links to all parts of Greater
Toronto, make Aurora a highly attractive location for businesses to
become established and thrive.
As a past President of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and former
business owner, I understand the critical role of business in supporting
our community and the need for strategic partnerships to create strong,
balanced and sustainable municipalities.
The Aurora Chamber of Commerce is a valued partner in promoting, attracting and keeping our
businesses strong and prosperous. I look forward to continuing our mutually-beneficial association
as we move forward in a number of strategic areas, including our:
Community Improvement Plan: A strategy to develop incentives for attracting and developing
investment in our downtown core
Business Retention and Expansion Strategy: Working with local businesses to examine
opportunities to enhance economic success and address key issues raised during our comprehensive
business survey in 2012
Library Square: A series of public workshops to receive information and discuss alternatives on the
future of the facilities along Victoria Street and Church Street
Development of 2B and 2C Lands: Discussing and reviewing applications for employment lands
along Highway 404
Working collaboratively, The Town of Aurora and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce can have a
tremendous and positive impact on the quality of life that residents of Aurora enjoy.

Chamber History
T
he Aurora Chamber of
Commerce was started
in the early 1900s. It
experienced a hiatus in the
early ‘60s and was re-juvenated
by a group of interested business
people in 1979. In 1984, the
Chamber moved to its first office—
an old sales trailer on the same site
where the current office is located.
The new building – a meeting
place for business – was opened in
December 2002.

Our managing partner, Kathy van Nostrand cga, founded
the firm in 1988 as a sole proprietor. Her reputation,
standards for excellence and unwavering commitment to
client service was, and continues to be, the catalyst for
the firm’s steady growth.
Brian Roberts cga, lpa, became a
partner of the firm in 2006 and is
an integral part of the day to day
operations of the company. Brian is a
licensed public accountant allowing the
firm to prepare audit and assurance
engagements. He also serves on the
board as the secretary / treasurer for
the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and
is an active member in the community.
Kathy is an active member of The Aurora Chamber of
Commerce as well as a volunteer with York Region. She
has been instrumental in many on-going professional
development initiatives in the York Region area.
In 2010, the firm moved to new offices on Wellington Street East from its Yonge
Street location, which is widely known for the large rocks in front advertising the
firm’s offices. Kathy, Brian and the staff are very proud of the firm’s growth and
are delighted that the growth required a new and larger location.
