President’s Message
Summer 2014
Dear Garden Friends,
Hooray for Summer! We Colorado
gardeners plan and dream for this all
year. Perusing seed catalogues while
wrapped in a cozy quilt, watching the
snow blanket the garden all the while
scheming of new color combinations and
plants to try. Fresh vegetables and flowers!
The list of activities this time of year can
be as long as the day allows with new
gardens to explore, plant sales to staff
and shop, and club projects to engage our
time. Don’t let the season go by without at
least a few “lazy days” of reading or
simply living in the moment.
The Annual Meeting in Colorado Springs
was the culmination of our garden clubs’
year. The busy day is always exciting with
lots of information and friendship to
share. Members and clubs received
recognition for their efforts and we were
honored to make a significant
contribution to the Penny Pines Project,
thanks to your overwhelming support.
Audrey Coyle and the convention
committee took great care, planning
every detail to ensure a smooth course.
The end of the summer will bring the
Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting to our
state. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet
gardeners from our seven regional

encouraged to take a 20-minute tour thru the
‘Garden of the Gods’ before leaving the area.

Celebrating 85 Amazing Years
This year the National Garden Club’s annual
convention was held May 1 - May 3, 2014 at the
Embassy Suites Norman Hotel & Conference Center
in Norman, OK. The convention marked 85 years of
history that includes partnerships, projects, and
programs to protect our world: Education via
Environmental Schools, Flower Show Schools,
Gardening Study Schools, and Landscape Schools as
well as member services Study Lessons, ‘How To’
manuals, videos and books; the ‘growing in
knowledge’ opportunities from NGC seem endless!
This is celebrated, recognized, and encouraged
through the annual convention and this year was no
exception.

Dig and Dream Garden Club

May has been a busy month as we completed a lot
of community service projects and a fund-raiser.
We are quite proud of our annual plant sale with a
profit just over $600.00. The perennials that were
remaining from the plant sale were donated to
Excelsior Youth Center. We had a few small
projects to earn money with our major fund-raiser
scheduled for September.
Club members went to Excelsior Youth Center and
planted five golden currants, three sacatons, and
ornamental grass on one workday. Also planted
were 840 plugs of blue grama grass in a 600
square foot space at the entrance to the garden.
We also netted the strawberry bed to keep birds
out, finished irrigation in the raised vegetable
beds and planted the donated perennials.
Excelsior Youth Center is a project that is ongoing
all summer with quite a few workdays during the
next few months.

The Colorado Garden Connection
Colorado Federation of Garden Clubs Identifies Core Values
Stabilizing and growing membership is a concern for most garden clubs. Our clubs range from small, quiet
older groups to large active bursting-at-the-seams clubs. They are creative, enterprising, educated, fun and
successful. We have a mission statement, as do most non-profit groups, but it does not clearly say who we
are. Colorado Garden Clubs decided to define themselves by sharing their common or core values.
In this day and age, there are so many more opportunities to volunteer that people are looking for exactly
the right fit. We believe this will help anyone searching for a “match” and identify with garden club. Core
values are the fundamental beliefs of an organization, the guiding principles, and they help support the
vision and shape the culture. So what are those values?
Knowledge – educate members and the public with sound gardening practices and principles
Innovation – nourish new and creative ideas that have the potential to change the gardening world
Respect – for each other, garden club assets, the diversity of our membership, and the environment.
Community – contribute to local projects with our time, talent and some “treasure”.
Sustainability – continue our legacy through projects that have and will impact Colorado.
There is nothing new or different in these words. They remind us why we joined a garden club, what we
share and who we are. Together we will continue to work on the garden at Fort Logan National Cemetery,
install and maintain Blue Star Markers, restore our forests with Penny Pines, educate fellow gardeners with
programs and schools and lead the way in water conservation.
