North Texas opens the second half of the Sun
Belt Conference season on the road against
Western Kentucky. The Mean Green is faced
with six of its final nine games in league play
on the road. The game will be televised as
part of the Sun Belt Conference’s package
with Comcast Sports Southeast. North Texas
is coming off a 2-point overtime loss to Troy
on Wednesday. Western Kentucky has had a
week off since last playing against the Denver
Pioneers last Saturday.
The Coaches
North Texas is led by first-year head coach
Shanice Stephens. She begins her coaching
career with the Mean Green after spending
time as the associate head coach at Clemson
and Rice University. She is the youngest head
coach in the Sun Belt Conference and the
second youngest in the state of Texas. Stephens
picked up her first career coaching victory over
UMKC. Her record is 7-13 through 20 games.
Western Kentucky is led by seventh-year head
coach Mary Taylor-Cowles. She has led Western Kentucky to six straight 20-win seasons
and took the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Tournament last season. She has compiled a record of
149-65 at Western Kentucky.
The Last Time Out
DENTON, Texas (1/28/09) – Amber Jackson
scored a career-high 30 points however it was
not enough to hold off Troy, who won 80-78 in
an overtime heartbreaker Wednesday evening at The Super Pit. After forcing an extra
period, North Texas had an opportunity to send
the game into a second overtime, however
Mansa El’s made layup at the buzzer came
a half a second too late. Jackson, who was
battling cramps throughout the night, played
35 minutes and finished with 30 points and 10
rebounds. North Texas (7-13, 3-6) trailed by as
much as 11 points with 5:13 left in regulation,
however the Mean Green slowly chipped into
the lead and used some late-game heroics to
force overtime. Trailing 69-65, Jo Hall missed
a one-and-one free throw but Yari Escalera
tracked down the rebound and nailed a threepointer deep in the left corner to make it 69-68
with 33 seconds remaining. After Troy made
one free throw, Jackson hit the game-tying shot
with seven seconds left to complete the comeback. Troy would have one last chance to win
the game but North Texas did not allow Kylie
Morrissy a shot opportunity as time expired.
North Texas jumped on Troy early by taking
a 7-0 lead and expanded that margin to 25-12
with 7:40 left in the first half.

Post-Game Policies
The North Texas locker room is closed after home games. Coach Stephens and requested players will be available for interviews in the Media Room in The Super Pit.
The Series
North Texas and Western Kentucky will meet
for the 13th time in series history. Western
Kentucky leads the series 7-5 against the Mean
Green. The Hilltoppers knocked off the Mean
Green last season in the quarterfinals of the Sun
Belt Conference Tournament last season 61-53
on their way to the conference title. Western
Kentucky is a perfect 5-0 against North Texas
at home including a win over the Mean Green
in the 2003 SBC Tournament.
Hitting A New High
Amber Jackson continues to reach new heights
as she broke her career-high in points with 30
against Troy. Its the first time that Jackson has
ever scored 30 points in a game for her career
and the. Jackson and Brittney James have both
topped the 30-point mark this season, marking
the first time since the 2001-02 season that two
players have scored more than 30 points in a
game. Jackson and James have had three games
of 30 points or more over the last two years.
Prior to last season, the Mean Green went four
seasons without a player scoring 30 points in a
game.
Lucky 13
Amber Jackson’s night against Troy was record
setting for a number of reasons, but she also
connected on 13 field goals in the game. Its the
most field goals in a single game by a player
since current assistant coach Jalie Johnson
(Mitchell) had 14 field goals on February 7,
2002. Jackson is also on pace to enter the
top 10 for most points in a single season in
school history. The record is 611 set by Clara
Campbell in the 1985-86 season. She is on pace
for 524 points, which would be the fifth most in
school history and the most since Johnson and
the 2001-02 season.
Stay Away
The Mean Green’s continue its winning ways
away from home this season by beating FIU
for its fifth road win of the season. North Texas
has already tied for the third most road wins in
school history this season by winning five on
the road. The school record for road wins in a
single season is seven, set during the 20005-06
season. Of more intrigue is the Mean Green has
a chance to finish the season with more road
wins than home wins on the season, which has
only happened twice before in school history.
North Texas has four more home games and
six more on the road. Only in the 1979-80 and
1983-84 seasons did North Texas win more
road games than home games.

50-50 Chance
Jackson is shooting just over 50.2 percent
for the season and is going after her second
straight year of shooting 50 percent or better
from the floor. Only two players in school
history have ever shot 50 percent or better in
school history in back-to-back seasons, Freda
Deckard and Clara Campbell. Deckard last did
it in the 1994-95 and 95-96 seasons. Campbell
had her back-to-back seasons in 1985-86 and
86-87. Jackson shot exactly 50 percent from
the floor last season.
Group Activities
While the Mean Green as a team has been
active creating turnovers, a trio of players
has been racking up steals. Amber Jackson,
Brittney James, and Tricia Lee are on pace for
more than 50 steals this season. North Texas
hasn’t had three players with 50 steals or more
since the 1998-99 season. Jackson has 39,
James 38, and Lee 36 on the season.
Its Okay To Steal
One area that Shanice Stephens has focused
on is getting turnovers and mistakes and the

Mean Green is producing in that area. Through
20 games, North Texas has 224 steals and has
a chance to challenge the school record which
stands at 370. North Texas is on pace for 356
steals this season, which would be the second
most in school history. More impressive is that
number would be the most steals in a single
season for North Texas in over 24 years.
The Magic Numbers
The Mean Green is 6-3 this season when
holding its opponent to 70 points or less but
1-10 when allowing more than 70 points this
season. In terms of field goal percentage, NT
is 4-1 when holding its opponent to less than
40 percent this season but only 3-12 when
allowing better than 40 percent shooting this
season. North Texas is 4-10 this season when
scoring less than 70 points but 3-3 when
crossing the 70-point threshold.
Going For Two
Amber Jackson recorded her 11th doubledouble of the season against Denver and she
is still averaging a double-double for the
season. Jackson is trying to become the player
in 22 seasons at North Texas to average a
double-double for the season. Not since Clara
Campbell in the 1986-87 season has a North
Texas player averaged a double-double for the

for her career and has scored in double figures
in 65 games for her career.
Two Of A Kind
Amber Jackson and Brittney James have a
chance to make a little history at North Texas.
Both players are eyeing the 1,000 point club
in scoring this year and if they both did, they
would be the first duo to score 1,000 points
for their career in the same season in school
history. Jackson topped the 1,000 point plateau
against Houston. James has 827 points for her
career and is averaging 10.7 points a game. She
needs to average just over 16 points a game to
have a chance to reach 1,000 points. She is on
pace to have 934 at the end of the season.
Stacking Up In The Sun Belt
North Texas ranks in the top 5 of 10
different statistical categories in the Sun Belt
Conference. It’s across the board as well as
the Mean Green is fourth in scoring offense,
tied for first in offensive rebounding, free
throw percentage and third in steals per game.
Individually Amber Jackson is second in the
league in scoring and third in rebounding.
Brittney James is 22nd in the Sun Belt in
scoring at 10.9 points a game. Yari Escalera
is second in the SBC in 3-pointer field goal
percentage, hitting 42 percent of her 3-pointers.
Welcome To The Club
Amber Jackson continues to clear hurdles and
break records this season. Jackson became the
11th player in school history to reach 1,000
points for her career. Jackson now has her
sights set on moving up that list. She is 5th

The Last Time vs. WKU
MOBILE, Ala. (3/8/08) – North Texas nearly
pulled off the upset of the Sun Belt Tournament,
but in the end, top seeded Western Kentucky
proved too strong in a 61-53 win at the Mitchell
Center. The Mean Green (14-18) held an eight
point lead in the second half, and was still
ahead with just under four minutes remaining.
But Western Kentucky (24-7) and the Sun Belt
Player of the Year Crystal Kelly reeled off a
16-1 run that sealed the deal for the Hilltoppers.
Kelly, who finished with a game-high 18 points
and 14 rebounds, helped the Hilltoppers post
a 39-29 edge on the boards and an eight point
advantage in the paint.Escalera drained a
3-pointer and Howard took control of the post
to vault the North Texas lead to eight points
midway through the final frame. The Mean
Green caught a break when Kelly went to the
bench with her fourth foul with just over 12
minutes left in the game. Kelly was forced

North Texas Signs Top Talent
North Texas women’s basketball inked four
players to National Letters of Intent during
the early signing period. The four players will
make up the first recruiting class for Coach
Stephens and join transfers Brittney Hudson
and Niqky Hughes to sign with the Mean
Green. The four players represent not only
some of the best talent from across the state of
Texas but also the region. Stephens added two
guards in Raquel Cuffie and Lakevia “KeKe”
Taylor and two forwards in Jasmine Godbolt
and Brittany Thompson. Godbolt, one of the
top players in the DFW metroplex, was a
key player in the run of Naaman Forest High
School to the state tournament last season.
Thompson, the other forward, put up some
of the best numbers in the state last season as

she averaged 26 points a game and had a state

the premier guards in the North Carolina region
and played for perennial powerhouse Oak Hill
her sophomore season, helping lead them to a
national title. Taylor is one of the best rising
point guards in Texas, averaging over six assists
per contest as a junior and earning All-Region
honors.
Time To Bond
North Texas will be tested in a number of areas
this year and one of those will be time away
from home. The Mean Green plays 17 road
games this season, which ties the school record
set just two seasons ago. North Texas has 18
games away from home, one of those however
is a neutral site game with Charleston Southern.
The good news is that the longest road swing
is to start the year as the Mean Green plays its
first five games away from home. Its the first
time since the 1998-99 season that the Mean
Green will play five straight games to open the
year away from home.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
ABOUT SHANICE STEPHENS
HEAD COACH SHANICE STEPHENS
On April 16, 2008 Shanice Stephens was named the University of North Texas’ fifth women’s
basketball head coach by University President Dr. Gretchen M. Bataille and Athletic Director Rick
Villarreal. Known around the country as one of the best
recruiters, Stephens has spent the last three seasons as
the associate head coach at Clemson and was at Rice for
nine seasons prior to that. Stephens picked up her first
career win as a head coach against UMKC.
Stephens, 37, is the youngest head coach in the Sun Belt
Conference and the second-youngest Division I head
coach in the state of Texas. While at Clemson, Stephens
was the recruiting coordinator that saw the Lady Tigers
sign some of the best classes in school history, including
the nation’s 22nd ranked class in 2006 by The All-Star
Girls Report.
Lele Hardy, the first recruit to sign under McKinney, had
one of the most prolific freshman campaigns in program
history. Hardy was named to the 2007 ACC All-Freshman team and set numerous school freshman
records in 2006-07.
“I have had the pleasure of working with
Shanice Stephens for 12 years. She is a
hard working coach with a real passion
for the game of basketball and coaching.
Coach Stephens has a real gift when it
comes to communicating with people and
this gift serves her very well with players,
recruits and co-workers. I have no doubt
that she will do a great job with the North
Texas women’s basketball program”
--Cristy McKinney, Clemson Head
Women’s Basketball Coach
Stephens, who has a reputation for developing great defenders, guided Hardy to an ACC-best 3.27
steals per game her freshman season. Hardy collected 98 for the season to rank second all-time in
program history.
“I think she has every critical element
to be ultra successful at North Texas.
She can really teach and I’ve seen that
first hand. She communicates in varied
ways and it’s all earmarked to reach each
person. What sets her apart is she has the
passion but also compassion, and that’s
very rare that you see people combine
both. She is a tremendous teacher and
an even better person, but she will never
lose sight of her number one job which is
to impact the lives of student-athletes in a
positive manner”
--Jeff Van Gundy, ESPN Analyst and
Former NBA Coach
Stephens had a significant impact in the development of four-time All-WAC selection, All-Time
Top 50 WAC player and former WNBA player Marla Brumfield. Under Stephens’ guidance,
Brumfield finished first in Rice history with 311 steals, and third in Lady Owl history with 1,703
career points scored. Stephens also coached Charonda Wilson, a two-time WAC All-Defensive
Team selection. Stephens spent three years as an Athletic Amateur Union (AAU) coach in Oklahoma, guiding her 1996 team to the state championship.
During her time at Rice from 1996-2005, Stephens was part of program that reached heights
never before seen by the women’s basketball team. Rice won 20 games or more in six of the nine
seasons and reached the NCAA Tournament twice (2000, 2005) along with trips to the WNIT in
1998, 1999, 2002, and 2004.
Along with the six post-season appearances for Rice, Stephens helped the Lady Owls to 179 wins
and was part of the program that averaged just under 20 wins per season in her time at Rice. The
2004-05 season saw Rice capture a school record 24 wins and its second WAC Tournament title
and trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 1999-00 Stephens helped lead Rice to the WAC Tournament Championship and the school’s first ever NCAA Tournament berth.
Stephens earned her undergraduate degree in 1993 from Oklahoma State, where she earned two
letters and was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams. The Cowgirls advanced to the Sweet
16 of the national tournament during her senior season. Stephens started at point guard for Austin
Peay during the 1989-90 season, her first year of eligibility.
She earned a masters degree in 1996 from the University of Central Oklahoma.
The former Shanice Bottoms is married to Garrett Stephens. She has two daughters, Sydney Alexandria (7) and Lauryn A’lyce (1), a son Grayson David , and two stepsons Garrett (13) and Grant
(8).

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (11/17/08) – Despite a career-high 21 points
from Tricia Lee, the Marshall Thundering Herd held off a feisty
North Texas women’s basketball team to win 78-69 from the Cam
Henderson Center.
Lee had five 3-pointers on the night including one with 2:26
remaining to cut the Marshall lead to 70-67. The Thundering Herd
(2-0) though answered back with a lay-up from Alix Barnette and
outscored North Texas 9-2 in the final two minutes to pick up the
win. It was a back and forth game that saw North Texas break open
a close game in the first half with a 12-3 run to take a 33-26 lead
with three minutes to play in the half. Marshall answered back with
a run of its own to end the first half.
The Thundering Herd got a basket at the buzzer from Casey Baker
to cap off a 10-1 run to close the half and take a 36-34 lead into the
break. North Texas (0-1) came out strong to start the second half taking a six point, 48-42, five minutes in thanks to 10 quick points from
guard Brittney James.
Marshall had another answer as post Tynikki Crook proved to be a
physical presence down low. Crook fueled a Thundering Herd 9-0
run to give Marshall a 65-57 lead with seven minutes to play. North
Texas had one last rally but it came up short. Crook led all scorers
with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Joining Lee in double figures for
North Texas was James who had 13, Amber Jackson with 12, and Jo
Hall with 11 points.
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (11/22/08) – Brittney James scored a
game-high 23 points and Amber Jackson recorded a double-double
(15 points, 11 rebounds) to help Shanice Stephens and the Mean
Green record their first win of the season in a 80-74 victory over
University of Missouri-Kansas City.
After a high scoring first half, North Texas (1-1) held the Kangaroos to only 30 percent shooting from the field and 34 points in the
second half. North Texas never trailed after gaining a 21-19 lead at
the 10:06 mark and eventually pushed their first half lead to points
before they went into the half with a 45-40 lead.
The Mean Green came out of the gates strong in the second half by
going on a 14-7 run that was capped by a Brittani Bailey jumper to
extend North Texas’ lead to 59-47. Bailey had her best game of the
season with 11 points in 20 minutes of action. UMKC (1-2) made a
run late by trimming the lead to 78-74 with 39 seconds remaining
but never got any closer as James made two clutch free throws to
secure the win.
Overall North Texas shot 53 percent from the field, including 3-of-7
from beyond the arc. Yari Escalera and Mansa El also were key
components in the win with 9 and 8 points respectively.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (11/24/08) – A stifling defense and
18 points by Brittney James powered the North Texas women’s
basketball team to its second straight victory over Texas A&MCorpus Christi 61-53. The Mean Green had 22 steals, the fifth most
in school history, and forced 34 Islander turnovers to pick up their
second straight road win.
“We picked up the intensity on the defensive end but we are still a
work in progress,” said coach Shanice Stephens. “We have some
things that we need to work on but to get a road win is always
good”.
The Mean Green (2-1) never trailed in the game, leading wire-towire. North Texas turned the Islander mistakes into 25 points and
had nine different players with steals. The Mean Green jumped on
the Islanders from the start, taking a 13-5 lead seven minutes into
the game. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi never got any closer than nine
points in the first half.
The second half was controlled by the Mean Green as they stretched
their lead out to 16 points at 47-31 with 10 minutes to play. The
Islanders (1-3) made one final run late in the game to cut the lead to
eight, but a layup by Tricia Lee with two minutes to play ended the
comeback.
Amber Jackson also had double figures on the night for the 49th
time of her career with 12 points while notching a career-best six
steals in the game.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (11/28/08) – Jo Hall tied her career-high
with 25 points and North Texas won its third straight game with a
65-61 over UTSA in the opening game of the UTSA Thanksgiving
Classic. The Mean Green (3-1) rallied from a nine-point first-half
deficit, made a key defensive stop, and four free throws down the
stretch to hold off the Roadrunners.
With North Texas leading 61-59, UTSA (1-4) had a chance to tie
the game with 18 seconds left but Amber Jackson blocked the shot
of Onika Anderson and the Mean Green grabbed the rebound. Hall
and Yari Escalera finished the game off from the free throw line with
four straight makes.
The Mean Green had an early 10-9 lead, but UTSA went on a 13-2
run to open up a nine-point lead at 21-12 with eight minutes left in
the first half. Hall single handily kept North Texas in the game as she
went 7-for-7 in the first half and keyed a 20-7 run over the next five
minutes. UTSA scored the final five points of the half to take one
point lead into the break at 33-32. The Mean Green opened the second half with a 12-6 run to lead by five at 44-39. North Texas grew
the lead to 11 at 56-45 with six minutes to play after five straight
points by Escalera.
UTSA made one final push late in the game to get the lead to two
points but came up short. Jackson finished with 15 and 13 rebounds,
her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career.
The Mean Green has won three road games through four games,
which is faster than any other team in school history.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (11/29/08) – Brittney James 3-pointer at the
buzzer fell just short and the North Texas (3-2) women’s basketball
team dropped a two-point game to Charleston Southern 97-95 at
the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. James scored a career-high 34
points in the game but her game-winner at the buzzer fell just shy.
Charleston Southern capped a furious second half rally after trailing
by nine-points at the half by hitting nine 3-pointers and 60 percent of
their shots.
The Buccaneers (3-4) began their rally to start the second half after
North Texas dominated the opening 20 minutes. Charleston Southern had an 11-2 run in the first three minutes of the half to tie the
game up at 49-49.
The Mean Green continued to maintain the lead until a 3-pointer by
Kelsey Wasmer with 10 minutes to play gave the Buccaneers their
first lead of the game at 69-67. Charleston Southern pushed its lead
to 10-points at 83-73 with 6:51 to play. The Mean Green began its
rally with three 3-pointers, one from Tricia Lee and two from James.
A Lee lay-up with 1:31 to play made it a one-point game at 93-92,
but Pam Tolbert hit a jumper from the baseline to put the Bucs up
by three again at 95-92. A free throw by Lydia Johnson made it a
four-point lead at 96-92 but Lee had another lay-up with 29 seconds
to make is just a two-point Charleston Southern lead. Tolbert missed
two free throws with 24 seconds to give the Mean Green a chance.
Trailing by two, 96-94, James was fouled with six seconds to play
while shooting a 3-pointer. She missed the first two free throws
before making the last one to cut it to a one-point game at 96-95.
Tolbert made one of two free throws to give Charleston Southern a
97-95 lead before the final miss by James.
Amber Jackson recorded her second straight double-double with 16
points and 14 rebounds as Lee had 15 points an Jo Hall added 16
points.

DENTON, Texas (12/2/08) – The Houston Cougars 13-0 run to end
the first half proved to be too much for the Mean Green women’s
basketball team to overcome in an 80-66 loss in the home opener
Tuesday night at the Super Pit.
Amber Jackson scored 21 points to lead North Texas as she became
the 10th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 career point
mark with 1,008 current points.
However, the Mean Green (3-3) struggled from the field shooting
only 28 percent, including 21 percent from three point territory
(5-of-23).
North Texas also had 24 turnovers for the game and allowed four
Houston players to score in double figures, including a game-high 23
points from Porsche Landry.
After trailing by as many as 19 points in the second half, the Mean
Green managed to trim the lead to 72-63 with 2:17 remaining in the
contest, but could not draw any closer.

DALLAS, Texas (12/14/08) – Despite Amber Jackson’s sixth
straight double-double the North Texas women’s basketball team
was unable to overcome 31 turnovers as SMU downed the Mean
Green 74-57 at Moody Coliseum. SMU (3-5) turned the North
Texas (4-5) mistakes into 28 points sending the Mean Green to its
second straight loss.
“We just had way too many mistakes to beat a team like SMU and
we have to take care of the ball better than that if we are going to be
successful,” said North Texas coach Shanice Stephens. “We have
a lot of work to do to get better but it starts with taking care of the
basketball”.
SMU used two big runs in the first half to take control of the game.
North Texas took an early 6-2 lead, but SMU responded with a 13-6
run to take a 15-12 lead. The Mustangs closed out the first half with
another big run of 14-2 to take a 37-22 lead into the break.
North Texas got as close as 11 points in the second half but could
never get the SMU lead down to single digits.
Jackson record 16 points and 15 rebounds to notch her sixth straight
double-double. Tricia Lee added 15 points and Brittney James had
13 points.
North Texas is back in action on Thursday night as they begin Sun
Belt Conference play on the road at Louisiana-Lafayette.

LAFAYETTE, La. (12/18/08) – Shanice Stephens and the North
Texas women’s basketball team introduced the Sun Belt and
Louisiana-Lafayette to “94-Feet of Heat” in a 57-56 win over the
Ragin’ Cajuns on Thursday. Her mantra from day one, NT’s first
year head coach used some potent offense to vault the Mean Green
(5-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) out to a 37-24 halftime lead and hung on to beat
the Cajuns (2-9, 0-1 Sun Belt) with a pair of key defensive stands.
After UL’s Mercedes Johnson hit a runner with just over a minute
remaining to give the Cajuns their first lead of the game, Amber
Jackson responded just seconds later to put NT back on top 57-56.
Tricia Lee pulled out the game’s biggest hustle play when she dove
for a loose ball on a UL inbounds play to give the Mean Green the
possession with 26 seconds remaining, and Jackson came up with
another big steal to ice the game.
The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Jackson led the Mean
Green with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her seventh straight double-double. No Mean Green player since NT Hall-of-Famer Clara
Campbell in 1985-86 had more consecutive double-doubles. The
Mean Green gave the Cajuns little room to operate in the opening
minutes. NT held Louisiana off the scoreboard for the game’s first
6:32, and jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead. The Cajuns responded
with a run of their own before Mansa El got loose. The freshman
exploded for eight straight points on a pair of 3-pointers and cutting
layup to put NT up 24-12 with just under eight minutes to play in the
first.
The Mean Green committed just five turnovers in the first half, but
couldn’t find the handle in the second. The Cajuns turned 14 second
half NT turnovers into 14 points to close the gap in the final minutes.

DENTON, TX (12/20/08) – Despite a career-high 28 points by
Amber Jackson, the North Texas women’s basketball team came up
short in an 84-70 loss to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at the
Super Pit.
The Privateers (5-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) snapped a two-game losing streak
and won its third game against the Mean Green in the last 11 meetings. North Texas falls to 5-6 and 1-1 in the conference but still leads
the series, 13-8.
Jackson posted a career-high 28 points in the game, surpassing the
23 points she set against UA-Monticello last year. She was 12-for-17
from the field and 4-for- 7 from the free-throw line. The senior also
posted her eighth straight double-double with 10 rebounds.
UNO jumped out to a 16-8 lead and never looked back. North Texas
cut the lead to three points three times in the second half, but the
Privateers always had an answer. New Orleans extended its 37-32
lead at the half to 11 points, 56-45, with 10:46 left in the game.
Jada Frazier led all scorers with 29 points. She was 11-for-14 from
the field and 4-for-4 from behind the arc. Frazier led four New Orleans players in double-figure scoring.
UNO shot 53.6 percent from the field and 76 percent from the freethrow line. The Mean Green hit 26-of-64 shots from the field (40.6
percent) and made 16-of-29 from the free-throw line. NT held the
edge in rebounds, 40-33. Brittney James joined Jackson in double
figures with 14 points.
STILLWATER, Okla. (12/28/08)- No. 21 Oklahoma State used a big
second half run to pull away from the North Texas women’s basketball team and win their sixth straight game 80-54 from Gallagher-Iba
Arena. The Cowgirls (9-2) lead wire-to-wire but blew the game
open early in the second half with an 18-2 run and never looked
back.
“We just had too many mistakes today and were in a little bit of a
rush on offense and you just can’t do that against a great team like
Oklahoma State,” said coach Shanice Stephens.
The Cowgirls opened that game with an 8-2 run and were able to
push their lead to 19-10 with 13 minutes left in the first half. The
Mean Green (5-7) kept the game close in the first half but Oklahoma
State used a big run of 15-6 to end the first half and take a 40-22
lead.
North Texas cut the Cowgirl lead to 14 points at 42-28 early in the
second half but mistakes doomed the Mean Green. Oklahoma State
forced 29 turnovers and converted those into 34 points. The Cowgirls used the Mean Green’s mistakes to make the 18-2 run and take
a 66-35 lead with 7 minutes left.
The Mean Green held All-American Andrea Riley to a season-low
14 points and forced her into eight turnovers.
Amber Jackson’s streak of eight straight double-doubles came to an
end as she was held to 10 points and six rebounds.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (1/7/09) – UALR was able to hold off a late
rally by the North Texas women’s basketball team and remain
perfect in Sun Belt Conference play with a 70-61 win from the Jack
Stephens Center.
Down by as many as 17 points in the second half, the Mean Green
(5-10, 1-3) cut the UALR (12-3, 4-0) lead to five points with 2:52
left at 61-56, but a key 3-pointer by Anshel Cooper was able to keep
the Trojans ahead for good.
“We played well tonight for about 30 minutes but we can’t have
those types of defensive lapses and beat a team like UALR,” said
coach Shanice Stephens. “Defensively we did what we needed to
and got them out of their rhythm but we just have to find a way to be
more consistent than that”.
North Texas raced out to an early 7-0 lead five minutes into the
game. That lead grew to 12 points at 21-9 with 7:36 remaining in
the half before UALR made a crucial run to turn the game around.
UALR went on a 17-0 run over the next 6:21 to surge ahead of
North Texas 26-21 right before the break.
The run continued into the second half as UALR turned a three-point
halftime lead into a 15-point cushion with a 19-7 run.
The Trojans pushed their lead to 17-points at 47-30 when the Mean
Green began its comeback. Amber Jackson keyed a 15-4 North
Texas run that cut the Trojans lead in half to 51-45 with 7:46 to play.
The two teams traded baskets down the stretch until the 3-pointer by
Cooper. Jackson had a game-high 26 points on the night, two shy of
her career-high.

by five points from Tricia Lee.
FIU (4-15, 2-6) responded with an 11-4 run to cut the Mean Green

DENTON, Texas (1/28/09) – Amber Jackson scored a career-high 30
points however it was not enough to hold off Troy, who won 80-78
in an overtime heartbreaker Wednesday evening at The Super Pit.
After forcing an extra period, North Texas had an opportunity to
send the game into a second overtime, however Mansa El’s made
layup at the buzzer came a half a second too late. The Mean Green
has now lost the last two meetings against Troy and leads the overall
series 7-2. Jackson, who was battling cramps throughout the night,
played 35 minutes and finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds. It
was her 11th double-double of the season.
Trailing 69-65, Jo Hall missed a one-and-one free throw but Yari
Escalera tracked down the rebound and nailed a three-pointer deep
in the left corner to make it 69-68 with 33 seconds remaining. After
Troy made one free throw, Jackson hit the game-tying shot with
seven seconds left to complete the comeback. Troy would have one
last chance to win the game but North Texas did not allow Kylie
Morrissy a shot opportunity as time expired. North Texas jumped on
Troy early by taking a 7-0 lead and expanded that margin to 25-12
with 7:40 left in the first half. At that point the Mean Green had
forced 10 turnovers and capitalized by turning those into 11 points.
However, everything changed from that point on for Troy. For the
remainder of the half the Trojans turned the ball over only once and
went on a 27-9 run in the final seven minutes to take a 39-34 lead
into halftime.
