Presidents Message
The cooler weather is here and with that the start of the different fun filled activities. The activities are organized by the different sections as
well as by the club. The social secretary has a fun filled program to entertain everyone. The plan can be seen on the PDORC website.
AGM will be on the 9th of December. Like last year, The Main Committee awards will announced at the AGM. Please come and support the
sections.
HSE & Security
No serious HSE issues were reported to the front office. However, as most of you have noticed that our barrier gate is broken and we are waiting for a new one. This
does not mean that one should not stop and show the membership cards. I would like to request you all, please take care of the rules and regulations. Don’t let
someone else remind you.
One very important incident and learning I would like to share here. One of our life guards in the MAF pool had a heart attack. He has since recovered. The lesson
here was that the emergency call was made; however, there was some confusion as to location and the ambulance went to RAH rather than MAF. Please make sure
when making emergency call be clear about the location and nature of the emergency. Please give full and clear information of yourself.
Ras Al Hamrah Club
All the sections are really buzzing with activity to provide entertainment for the members. A new section stated which has seen a very good response. This is the
kickboxing section. This is a non contact sport aimed at general fitness as well as self defense technique. The Youth dancing competition was held and indeed there
were a number of talented youngsters as young as 10 and below. They were dancing to all sorts of music. A good fun filled activity.
The cricket section had an inter directorate tournament in the sports hall. 8 teams participated representing 5 directorates. CPD were the champions. Tennis section
is also buzzing with activity with tournaments. The BBQ night at the restaurant was well received. It has been going on for some time and the food is very delicious
and good value for money.
On 7th November 2014, the Indian section organized a very colorful event "Diwali Mela" - Festival of lights. The event was attended by a large number of members
and their guests. It was a cultural treat. Authentic food from "chaats" to mouth watering dinner. The puppet show was a delight. The show stopper was the "Dandia
Dance" which was an experience to behold, a dance form normally seen on television and movies. Who would have thought that we would be treated to this cultural
event in RAH volleyball court!!!
I would like to congratulate the Indian section for putting up this wonderful event. I hope the Indian section would keep treating the members with many more such
events.
Finally after a long wait, the RAH Golf club saw a soft opening on the 23rd of November. It was a soft and low key event. HE Dr. Rumhy graced the occasion and hit the
first ball followed by our MD Raoul. Mr. Kitany, CEO Oman LNG and our previous HR director, Mr. Mundhir Barwani. The golf section had invited members of the golf
committee to take play on the opening day. The comments on the course were excellent all around. This was a really team effort to reach this milestone. The course
is open to all RAH members who are interested in joining the section at very competitive rates. They can play preview rounds at no charge. Please contact the Scott
Christenson, PGA • General Manager • Ras Al Hamra Golf Club, [email protected] • m +968.91394078
RAH Recreation Club Development Engagement
The section budgets have been approved. I expect fun filled programs for the club and its members. I am very well aware that sections events take a lot of effort and
planning to organize. With all the redevelopment going on in the Ras Al Hamrah area, there is concern about the availability of venue and space for the different
activities.
The budget has been approved with full confidence that all the sections will be able to do all their planned activities. The redevelopment, whatever course it takes, it
will allow the sections carry out their plans.
The club design and time line is currently been worked upon and will be shared in due time.
Access to the beach, gym, swimming pools, tennis and sports halls will be there throughout the redevelopment, the volleyball court and Sohar gardens will be
available until mid 2015 and then an open space area will be provided to continue with events held in these areas.
Staff and members will have access to food etc as well both during lunch as well evening time. The final details for the temporary restaurant facilities during
redevelopment are currently under review.
For more information on what is going on at the club, please visit the club website at: www.pdorc.com and any comments or feedback can be posted to
[email protected].
Enjoy the club facilities and the activities it offers and remember to give your help and support to make RAH a better place for our members, families and friends.
Khalid Jawad Al Khabouri.

RAS AL-HAMRA ASTRONOMY
SECTION (RAHAS)
Background
The Astronomy section of the PDO Recreation
Centre was founded in November 1996 by a small
group of enthusiasts, including the current Chief
Astronomer, Randall Penney (XGL/31). Initially
conceived as an informal group of star gazers, the
section’s launch proved unexpectedly popular,
filling Cinema Hall at its inaugural meeting. From
then onwards there has been no turning back with
the continuing popularity of its activities.
Who We Are?
Current Committee Members:
Chairman/Equipment Officer: Mohamed Lamki
UWB6
Treasurer: Jaqueline Spence, UEOI13A
Chief Astronomer/Secretary: Randall Penney
XGL31
Equipment Officer: Francisco Sanchez UWB2
Equipment Officer: Cameron Stokes
Equipment Officer: Adrian Woodcock
Equipment Officer: Joanna Vos
Planetarium Director: Sulaiman Busaidi EAS5
Goals
The chief aims of the Astronomy Group are:
• foster an interest and awareness in astronomy
• give its members the opportunity to
experience the wonders of the universe first
hand through observation activities
• transfer knowledge on astronomical matters to
its members through its camps, lecture
meetings and shows in collaboration with
PDO Planetarium
Activities
The section has two main activities.
• Weekend star observation camps at dark sites
in the North Oman Mountains in summer and
to lowland sites in the interior in winter.
RAHAS possesses a number of large
telescopes and accessory equipment for use of
members on these outings. These camps have
proved especially popular for families with
children.
• Lectures (in conjunction with PDO
Planetarium) by astronomical experts invited
from various institutions in the Middle East
Region and also knowledgeable RAHAS
members on astronomical and related topics
held at PDO Oil & Gas centre through the
winter period.
There are also ad-hoc sky watches organised for
special events, such as comets or lunar and solar
eclipses.
Committee Vacancies Available
If you have an interest in astronomy and/or
scientific instruments or possess IT/secretarial
abilities, RAHAS has a number of committee
vacancies, especially for equipment officers. If
you have ever dreamt of the opportunity to operate
a large astronomical telescope this could be just
the opening for you! On the job training is
provided. For more details please email Randall
Penney XGL/31.

generous harvest. This was a great event attended by 140 people,
up from 120 last year. Next Canadian event would be the 22nd
annual Stampede Party on March 6th 2014. Mark your calendars
accordingly. The Canadian Section already started organizing this
very successful and popular annual event.

Personal Development Network
Working together to achieve our ambitions
We are introducing ourselves as a new section, The Ras Al Hamra Personal Development
Network (also known as ‘Study Group’). We are a network of adults continuing their
professional and personal development through (online) study, volunteering or other activities.
Most of us had a professional career before becoming an expat, but now find it challenging to
stay focussed on our personal goals. The Personal Development Network provides a place to
study or work in concentration, while being among like-minded people for networking and
peer support.
Currently, we meet every Monday and Wednesday morning, combining concentrated
work/study and networking. The set up of our meetings is as follows:
● Open from 8:15am. Time to study, read, write, work in concentration.
● 9:30-10 Break and networking opportunity.
● More studying, etc, until 11:15.
For now we usually meet at the boat club. We hope to get access to our own room or office
soon. Depending on the location we will provide coffee and tea, or you can get yourself from
the bar. In the future we may extend the (number of) meetings and develop other activities.
All club members are welcome. Please, let us know if you are interested in joining, so we can
keep you up to date on our activities. You can also contact us for more information.
Pack your laptop, notepad and/or book and join us!

The highly anticipated sequel to the "New York Times" bestselling novel Contemporary Fiction
"The Rosie Project," starring the same extraordinary couple now living in New York and unexpectedly expecting their first child.
This is the omnibus of the first three hilarious 'Old Fools' books, bundled Memoirs

It begins with Book 1: 'Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools' (Amazon UK Top 100 Bestseller), followed by Book 2: 'Two Old Fools Ole!' and finishes with Book 3: 'Two Old Fools on a Camel'. The books span the time from when Vicky and Joe relocate to a tiny, crazy, Spanish mountain village, to their year teaching Arab children in Bahrain as the Arab revolution erupts.

November News
SPORTS DIVER TRAINING
Plans for next year’s training are now advancing well—the first
training planned is Sports Diver training—the next stage after
the Ocean Diver Open Water Diver course which covers a number of key skills and increases your depth limit in stages up to
35m. The course will also allow non BSAC divers (PADI, SSI
etc.) an opportunity to “cross-over” to BSAC.
Training News
Several more of our Ocean Diver trainees
have now completed their courses— including our youngest member—congratulations!
Only a few are now left to complete their
final open water lessons when they get to
put all their hard work into practice in the
sea and get to see some fish too!
In parallel with the Ocean Divers’ course we
have a number of more experienced divers
So all you Ocean Divers who are fed up with swimming around

Recent Dive Reports
We have been getting out to dive regularly
over the last month or so as these reports
show:
24 October:
Lovely viz today at Ray Bay and Hamburger and apparently there were 10 eagle rays too....
I want to go diving with Ewan every week ....
Two dives on Fahal. The hit list as follow : 3 CowTail
rays, a blue spotted ray. Second dive 2 CowTails, close
up Turtle action, massive shoals of different types of
fish, NudiBranch action, 2 x Giant Baracuda and
then 10 Devil rays on the safety stop. Unfortunately Ewan no GoPro of the rays - so no one
is going to believe us. Who cares we got the
memory.... Couple that with a large Black Tip
sighting for the Marshall of the day then all in all
something special on Fahal today.

Diwali Mela on 7th Nov 2014
By Indian Section Committee
The Indian section of RAHRC organized Diwali Mela on the 7th Nov 2014 to celebrate with
gaiety and enthusiasm the popular “Festival of Lights” to bring the community together to
help to bond, acquaint children with cultural roots, and to show case the best of the rich
Indian culture and heritage to the RAHRC Community. As it was a festival event, the intention
was to showcase Indian cultural heritage but at the same time create a party mood so that
each and every person who comes in can enjoy to the fullest..
The event was extremely well planned, organized and executed flawlessly and to say that the
event was a mega success is only an understatement. The event was well attended by more
than 1000 people of different ages and nationalities. Despite such large attendance with
many kids, the event was conducted without any HSE or security incident even though all
arrangements were in place to deal with such kind of situations. The Challenge was to ensure
that the mood lasted for six hours as the event started at 5 PM and was scheduled to end at
11 PM. This was successfully done
The highlight of the event was Dandiya (a community dance) with a live DJ. This was
followed by dancing to Bollywood beats with live DJ. A party atmosphere was created for
around six hours. The presence of the live DJ spinning out energetic foot tapping music from
Bollywood movies helped to bring out the hidden dancer in each and everyone to shake a
leg. It was a treat to the eyes to watch people of different nationalities mesmerized and
happily swaying to Dandiya beats and bollywood numbers. The Section also held workshops
so that the RAHRC community could get a chance of learning Dandiya prior to the event.
Other highlights of the event were:
•
•
•
•

•
The venue was tastefully decorated to showcase and reflect the rich culture of India.
The welcome arch was fantastic and internally it was colour all over!
Many performers enthralled the large crowd with their well choreographed moves
which was again masterminded by various lady choreographers of the section.
A professional Dandiya group was brought in which relived the heritage and all the
complex moves of the Dandiya!
On top of it we had our in-house singers who belted out many Bollywood numbers to
celebrate and continue with the party mood.
Magic and puppet shows were organized by a combination of professional artists and
in-house talent to regale the crowd.
Many Games were conducted (all in-house) and other fun-filled activities for children
which were a big hit.
Art and Craft stalls of Indian handicrafts and other trinkets were also set up to let
people go on a little shopping spree.
Face painting and henna helped people to enjoy the spirit of India.
No Indian party is complete without sumptuous Indian food. The organizers here too
pulled out a surprise by catering unlimited food including chaat to everyone. In addition
there was a full spread of Maincourse including vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.
There was also an Indian speciality “ Barf Ka Gola” which is extremely difficult to get.
•
The food was delicious and special mention should go to the chaats as everyone
enjoyed the wide spread of choice.
At the end of the show there was a raffle draw to complete the circle of joy and
happiness.
When it was time say bye and reluctantly go home, everyone had one question on their lips
“when is the next event coming”.
The Indian Section was revived in March 2014 after a long hiatus. Within this short span of
seven months, the Team has been able to put together two Major events which have
showcased India in its all hues to the RAHRC community.
A big bow to the organizers, the volunteers and performers for their selfless dedication and
determination for yet another success story.
PDO Toastmasters
Petroleum Development Oman kicked off a series of events to mark a week of celebrations for
the 44th Glorious National Day. PDO Toastmasters took part during the national day
celebrations
Why Should You Join Toastmasters?
Everyone has their own personal reasons for joining Toastmasters, but here are a few of the
most common:
1. Become a Better Public Speaker
Members work through a series of educational programs (at their own pace) designed to
improve their ability to write speeches, design presentations, and deliver them.
2. Overcome Public Speaking Fears
The most positive and supportive audience in the world is a Toastmasters club audience.
Speaking regularly in front of a group helps you calm your nerves and communicate
effectively.
3. “Practice” Presentations for Other Audiences
Everyone has different motivations for wanting to speak better. Maybe you want to hone
your presentation skills for your career. Perhaps you want to be able to speak out in your
volunteer organization. Maybe you want to complement your portfolio as an author,
manager, or other professional with speaking gigs? Whatever the case, Toastmasters is a
wonderful laboratory for you to practice your presentations and gain valuable feedback.
4. Gain the Confidence and Courage to Lead
Leadership and communication skills are intimately bound. Some might argue that
leadership is nothing more than the ability to effectively communicate a vision. As your
communication skills improve, your ability to lead will improve as well.
Regards.
