It is about immigration over the Mexican-‐ American border. We have to fill out a chart with five categories such as what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell from the video. The first time we watch it, we have to listen to it without sound to get better descriptions under categories such as what we see, smell, or taste. Then with music we fill out the other categories. With these descriptions, we can understand the video more. After that, we divided into groups to draw a single picture per group representing a different part of the song. This furthers our understanding of it even more. We then analyze the lyrics of the song to understand the song completely through a question asked in every verse. In the end, we understand Ricardo’s deep message given to us about immigration. By: Christian + MI Familia: The Movie In class everyone will watch a movie called Mi Familia, it is about a family who lives in the United States and goes through many hard things in life due to the fact that they are Mexican. To better understand these topics you will watch the movie “El Norte,” which portrayed the lives of a brother and sister from Guatemala who head to the United States in order to escape the military violence in their country and to get “una vida mejor.” We see the two characters, Enrique and Rosa, difficulties in crossing the border as well as their attempts to adapt to American ways. While watching the movie you will be filling in worksheets that refer to the literal plot events that take place as well as matching the characters to their description. In addition, you will be learning many - sodales. vocabulary words that relate directly to what is occurring in the movie. Words such as “el soldados” which means soldiers and “el coyote” refer to people who help illegal immigrants cross the border and enter the United States. After watching the movie you will explore different topics that are present such as comedy, racism, discrimination and symbols. To show what you have learned, in pairs, you will then create a graphic organizer that shows your specific topic that you have covered and present it to the class.
