What should I know about safety footwear?
If you or your workers are at risk for foot injury at your workplace, you
should wear the appropriate protective footwear.
• Safety footwear is designed to protect feet against a wide variety of injuries. Impact, compression, and puncture are the most common types
of foot injury.
• If foot protection is required, set up a complete foot safety protection
program including selection, fit testing, training, maintenance and
inspection.
• Choose footwear according to the hazard. Refer to ANSI Standard
Z41-1991 “Protective Footwear.”
• Ensure that footwear has the proper rating for the hazard and the
proper sole for the working conditions.
• Use metatarsal protection (top of the foot between the toes and ankle)
where there is a potential for injury.

Choosing the Right Garment
Different jobs require different levels of protection. The garments we catalog are enhanced for
a better fit and increased mobility. It’s important to diminish stress on the wearer, so they can
concentrate on the job at hand.
From dust and dirt protection to tough, durable Tychem® Reusables™ to Responder® suits
designed for dealing with chemical warfare agents, we’ve got you covered.
When you purchase garments you need to decide on fabric, visibility, seam construction, garment style and options like attached boots, faceshields, gloves, respirators and more.
Why care about seams? Protective garments are useless with out strong seams. One loose
thread or gap can compromise the protection your garment provides. If you need a garment
with a special seam detail, be sure to ask. We stock primarily serged and bound seam garments, but many others are available.

Choosing a garment
Different jobs require different styles or configurations of protective garments. From hoods, vests,
aprons, coveralls, and fully-encapsulated suits (Level B and Level A). Fully-encapsulated suits are
available in front or rear entry with a flat back for airline accommodations or an expanded back for
SCBA equipment.
Fabric:
It is crucial to know which materials can penetrate and/or permeate the protective fabric. Penetration testing measures the flow of gas, liquid or solid through an opening. Penetration tests are
used to see if fabric leaks. Permeation testing values occur when a chemical is absorbed until it
saturates one side of the material and then diffuses to the other side of the fabric.

istorically, vinyl aprons, sleeves, and
coat aprons (gowns) have demonstrated
limited wear life due to the erosion of
the vinyl’s plasticizers (softening agents). This
erosion is caused by frequent use and contact
with animal fats and oils, repeated washing and
cold work environments. VR garments do not
contain plasticizers, and their wear life is extended significantly. VR garments are also softer
and lighter in weight than traditional garments.

Who needs it and how does it work?
• Carhartt flame-resistant clothing (FRC) is designed for
Electricians and workers in the utility, oil, gas and petrochemical fields
that are at risk of exposure to electric arcs and flash fires,
which could cause severe or fatal burn injuries.
• Wearing Carhartt FRC helps protect against
burn injuries by providing thermal protection,
which if exposed to electric arcs or flash fires
will self-extinguish after the source of ignition, is
removed, limiting the body burn percentage.
• The flame-resistant fabrics are impregnated with
flame -retardant chemicals that extinguish flames
and help the fabric char.
• The flame-resistant chemicals will not washed out. Carhartt FRC is
guaranteed to be flame-resistant for the useful life of the garment; garment care instructions must be followed to maintain flame resistance.
• 100% cotton and other natural fibers provide minimal protection
against possible injuries. Cotton and wool are flammable fibers. If
exposed to electric arcs and flash fires, these materials will continue to
burn causing possible severe injury and death.
• Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) is a rating assigned to FRC
indicating the level of protection provided. Higher fabric weights have
higher ATPV’s, and provide increased protection, as does the layering of
FRC.
