With great anticipation we look forward to our 2016, 13th Annual NMMRO Bike Day at the Capital, which will be held February 13th @ 1 PM at our Santa Fe State Capitol Rotunda (see flyer in this newsletter). In 2015 we had approximately 700 attendances, as we gathered in opposition of two helmet bills. Our victory was the defeat two helmet bills; one if passed it would have mandate motorcycle helmets on all motorcycle operators and passengers; and another bill would have created an annual fee of $697 for a license plate sticker that allowed the operator and passenger to refrain from wearing a helmet. Our 2016 legislation session begins on January 19. This year it is a 30 day session with emphasizes on the budget. We have been monitoring all prefilled bills, and as of yet no motorcycle related legislation has been filed. To quote David Deveraux, Double D from the Motorcycle Profiling Project, “Mass of people magnifies the messages and demands of the community. The voices of our community are magnified when we gather in solidarity at our state capital making it more possible to achieve political and legislative goals." It is important that we continue to have large motorcycle community participation; so that we are united as we reach out and communicate the concerns of our community in the motorcycle rights movement. Even though helmet bills may not be filed this year, they will be back as we have members of the community who think that non-helmeted injuries cost our state 40 million dollars in medical costs. Our main focus should be on preventing the crash by promoting safety awareness and holding those who cause death or injury on our roads accountable. On following these crashes many occurred from other road users not looking for motorcycles and many of these where hit and run crashes. I am sure there are many more, these reported were mostly from the Albuquerque and Santa Fe area. In 2014 we were notified of 128 crashes with 19 fatalities. Over time as people learn more of our NMMRO Biker Down Program, we have more persons reporting crashes and requesting support for the crash victims and the families. Through the Biker Down Program we bring support and prayer if requested, we will make hospital visits and assist though our motorcycle ministries or if the crash victim have gone home and need continued support. We help offer advise if the crash victim as passed away through NMMRO Board Member David Cruz who is a local mortician 505-288-0755 THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER 2 We help offer medical or hospice advise through local connections within the community. We have also supported crash victims and family in court to show support and unity from our community. Our NMMRO board recently met and felt in was necessary to add four advisory positions to our NMMRO Board for support on issues that need to be addressed. These are non-voting board positons. Attorney Dan Sorey as a legal advisor; has been working with the organization for several years and has represented victims and families of motorcycle crashes in our state, he has also advised on issues the NMMRO and our motorcycle community have encountered. Retired Representative Rick Miera as a legislative advisor; he has been the motorcycle community’s greatest supporter on legislative issues for 27 years. Doug Anaya, Hellfighter MM President as a spiritual advisor; he has been working with our fallen biker program for several years and along with his club have aided and supported many of our community. Sylvianna Ray Esquibel as a medical advisor; she has assisted victims and families of motorcycle crashes with medical advice and hospice advice. Her specialty is on trauma related injuries, which would help us when we need to address the helmet bills in the future. All the advisors have accepted their positions and are honored to serve in the NMMRO board. We hope to see as many motorcyclists as possible at our Bike Day at the Capital. The bicyclist community will be joining us again in support this year. This year we will honor our 2016 motorcyclist of the year and motorcycle group of the year at bike day. Please join us. If the temperatures are low and you are unable to ride please come in your vehicles. The most effective way we can contribute is to show up and participate. Our large numbers of participation show our legislators that our motorcycle and bicyclist community gather in mass to address and fight when our safety, rights, freedoms and liberties are challenged. We usually have good media coverage. Last year all the letters the community wrote in opposition of the helmet laws helped us defeat the two bills. Two years ago DWI legislation for tougher penalties that had been tabled, was given a second chance after media coverage of our bike day rally. Again to quote Double D, “Remember there is no democracy without participation." About 500 coats where taken in along with gloves, hats, shoes ,underwear and clothes. It was great To see the motorcycle community come together to help the homeless in our community. The Regulators and Guerreros brought over a trailer full of donations. The Vicious Vixens and Hellfighters Took in all the donations. We had a man at the start pull up in a nice car and bring in several new Coats and leave. We don’t know who he was? Maybe a angel! But thank you for your kindness. On December 20th again we all gathered at the Mc Donald’s at Lomas and Broadway and went down Town to give out the donations and toys that the Onagers collected at their Toy Drive at the 66 Casino A few weeks before that. It was so heartwarming to see all these people be able to get the items They need to help them. Also seeing the kids get a new toy was so amazing, to see their eyes light up Like the lights on a christmas tree. We had the Hellfighters, GOC, BMC, Street Kings, Onagers,Vicious Vixens, NMMRO, Ruff Riders, Alethia Riders and Rick Miera and so many other volenteers who came out And helped at both events. Thank you to all that donated as well. Looking forward to this year’s BMC Coat Drive we are hoping to collect 700 coats this year. Start letting everyone know so we can Reach our goal this year. Kitti Gallegos- Editor 3 4 THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER COC of Northern New Mexico . I'd like to thank everyone that has participated in all the runs and events we had this year. We have had a successful year and have made a positive impact on the community. As we continue to move forward let’s all keep in mind that there has been some events that have happened that has not been given all the facts as they have been reported however with all that said we do have brothers and sisters that have been impacted by those reports and they need our support. Let’s continue to show the nation that as a state New Mexico will push forward and help those in need. Our next meeting will be on Feb 6th at noon at the American Legion Post 49. We also have bike day at the Capital on Feb 13th so it is important that if you all can make this please do. This is the one day as a whole that we as a Community can be heard loud and clear. Information on Bike day at the Capital will be distributed. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holidays. Be safe and enjoy the ride. Dozer, NMMCOC Chairman WNMMRO Hello NM Freedom Fighters First off welcome to 2016! Hopefully this year will be full of riding and less of legislative battles. 2015 was a very successful year due to keeping NM a state of choice, but the fight will not end and we must be ever vigilant for pending legislation aimed at taking away our right to choose to ride with or without a helmet. The saddest part of the whole helmet issue is the fact that the people out there that feel the need to control other people’s decisions will not stand together with us to stop the crashes before they happen but only to make crashing supposedly safer. As a motorcyclist rights, safety, education and awareness organization we need to push the Motorcycle Safety Foundation in NM to do more to promote and make rider education more accessible and less expensive for not only new riders but also the veteran riders out there. We must continue to stand together to protect our rights. Not only the helmet issue but the right to ride with who we want, what we want, where we want and when we want. The abuses of our rights as motorcyclist are being challenged by law enforcement all over the country with illegal searches and continued harassment of many club members. To all the Independents out there that feel this doesn’t affect you I guarantee you it will if we don’t stand together to protect all of our basic rights. As in the Waco incident to arrest over 170 riders just because of association is a complete violation of any American Citizens most basic Constitutional Right and the only way to stop it is for all riders to stand strong and shoulder to shoulder. Over here on the west side of the state things have been pretty quiet. Once again the WNMMRO will be pushing the MAP (Motorcycle Awareness Program) in the McKinley County school system and hoping to add a program aimed at elementary age students. We will also be doing MAP for both McKinley County Senior Centers. We continue with our quarterly highway cleanups. The McKinley County Toys for Tots event in December went very well and we passed out around 3,000 toys. WNMMRO is the local community organization sponsoring Toys for Tots here. Just an FYI for all the 2nd Amendment supporters there has already been a Assault Weapons Ban pre filed in the House for the 114th Congress. H.R. 4269 Assault Weapons Ban of 2015. Please contact your elected officials both state and federal to let them know that the 2nd Amendment is not negotiable! Well hope that we fill the Round House in Santa Fe for Bike Day at the Capitol Feb. 13th at 1 pm. Let’s work to make it the largest showing of freedom fighters to date and truly let our elected officials know we are still watching! Ride Free, Ride Safe but most of all RIDE! Just Jim, Coordinator WNMMRO THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER 5 CNMMRO To thank the millions of people who have courageously defended our country, guarded our safety, and helped protect everyone’s personal freedom to ride, Harley-Davidson is offering a free Harley-Davidson® Riding Academy New Rider Course for all current and former U.S. military personnel and first responders (law enforcement, fire, and EMS). You can register now and sign up to take an eligible course January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2016.* In addition to the Harley-Davidson® Riding Academy offer, there is an alternate offer available. With this alternate offer, qualified participants will be eligible to receive a Harley-Davidson™ Gift Card in an amount equal to the value of a course offered at an authorized Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) or other state accredited riding school, upon proof of completion of a basic motorcycle riding course and a receipt. To take advantage of either offer goes to https://ridefree.harleydavidson.com/americanheroes/?source_cd=social_20160101_FB&version=desktop Meanwhile in Australia....... Almost one quarter of Queensland's 2015 road toll – the 242 Queenslanders who died last year in a road accident – was linked to motorcycles, senior police confirmed on New Year's Day. And yet motorcycles make up less than 4 per cent of the 4.9 million registered vehicles on Queensland roads. Yes there is a helmet law in Queensland. Among other proposed changes to reduce road toll... Motorcycle license changes: Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey "Of great concern this year has been the number of motorcycle fatalities," Mr. Bailey said. "It often involves a single motorcycle and no other vehicle," he said. Mr. Bailey said changes to motorcycle license’s would be bought in to place from 2016. "Motorcycle riders will need to have longer at each level before they progress to more powerful bikes," Mr. Bailey said. "That is to get the experience, so we can drive the motorcycle road toll down." Ride safe! Rod, CNMMRO Chair. 6 THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER SNMCOC SNMCOC has had a very busy and productive 2015, growing nearly 50% and having a huge increase in participation. This is a direct result in new found friendships and partnerships and the great guidance and support of our major clubs in the state. With the creation of our National Council of Clubs, following the events in Waco, TX, with David “Double D” Devereaux from Washington state acting as our spokesperson and highlighting profiling directed against the motorcycle community, our clubs and independents have pulled together to work with each other as these events effect each of us. We are much stronger standing together. This cooperation will become even more important in 2016 as our rights as bikers are already being challenged and the members of several Motorcycle Clubs in our state are being directly targeted by state and federal authorities primarily for the patch they wear on their back rather than for the acts of individuals. I urge each of our members to become involved and continue to support one another during these trying times in the biker community; as well as attending this year’s Bike Day at the Capitol in Santa Fe on February 13, where you can indeed have a voice in our government. We had and especially productive holiday season this year in southern New Mexico, with literally dozens of benefits sponsored by our clubs including Toy Runs, Food Drives, benefits for Veterans, Fallen Bikers and brothers and sisters in need. We have truly changed the public view of bikers by giving back to our communities throughout the state and showing that we care for and are invested in the cities, towns and villages we call home. I would like to especially thank Bandidos MC, Blox Starz, Brotherhood 74, Centauros MC, Combat Vets, Dominion, Embudos MC, Guardians of the Children, Lumbre, Marines MC, Ruff Ryders, Soldados MC, Survivors, The Huns, Vaqueros, Vietnam Vets / Legacy Vets MC, Badland Saints, Christian Riders, Freedom Riders, Guerreros, Iron Sons, Pack, OG’s (Originals), Regulators, Rifa, American Veterans, many, many Independents and several of our partner organization from El Paso, including the Bandidos MC, The Risen Dead, Centauros MC, Lumbre and Combat Vets for their hard work and great efforts! I look forward to seeing everyone again at our next SNMCoC meeting on February 21, Quarters Bar, Ruidoso at 1pm. Ride Safe Willie (Memo) Chapter Commander (Prez) Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 47-1 Chair SNMCOC [email protected] [email protected] THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER 7 I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! Did you ever get so pissed off you just instinctively yelled at someone (or often something - like, I am really not very good with a wrench...yelling), it is much like the act of being in pain! How about the guy that you watch drive right beside your bike, knowing....yes, really knowing he has no idea you exist. You just want to yell at him. I love riding my motorcycle. I don't think there is a better way to put it than "I love" riding my bike. It brings me joy, freedom and a family that is ALWAYS there for you. I have a passion to the street and love racing in the dirt. This love relationship has times when we are one and times when we really have to work on our relationship. Sometimes I invest in some really nice upgrades to the one I love. How cool is it that we can have that type of relationship. My bike truly hears me. I have never been involved in another sport or a business where we riders are always looking out for those in our family. It is just part of who we are. The stories are boundless of us supporting a cause, rallying a ride for a family in need or just putting up a fellow rider in your house for the night. It makes me want to yell when I can't get the same medical as my neighbor because I ride. When the police have checkpoints just for motorcyclists. Every time I have to pay more for insurance, registration and tires - what is with the price of rubber these days? It makes me just instinctively yell and I wonder who really hears us? Being part of this family makes me a little protective to those that choose to ride. As Annette brings all of us together for the Ride to the Capital on February 13th - I think about all the family I have ridden with over the years. It's your voice that lets the people you have chosen to represent you hear you. They are setting the rules of the road and you get to tell them how you want things to roll. It is important now more than ever to be heard. We have lots of changing of the guards coming up in 16 and now it really is the time to show them some strength. We just need to be heard. If you swing by the dealership early on the 13th before you Ride to the Capital - brunch is on us. See you all around the shop, Thank you, David Pearson Chief, Cook & Bottle Washer 505-471-3808 [email protected] Santa Fe Harley-Davidson 4360 Rodeo Road Santa Fe NM 87507 http://www.santafeharley.com/ 8 THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER EPA Raises Ethanol Blend Levels December 8, 2015 EPA Raises Ethanol Blend Levels The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) reports that the Obama administration, along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), last week raised the amount of ethanol and other renewable fuels that must be blended into the nation's gas supply, announcing that 18.11 billion gallons of renewable fuels must now be blended into the nation's gasoline supply in 2016. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), as directed by our Sustaining State Motorcyclists’ Rights Organizations (SSMRO’s), does not support the use of ethanol fuels higher than E10 (10% ethanol) or any other newly developed fuel blends, including alternative renewable fuels, without further testing on motorcycle engines and obtaining specific recommendations from motorcycle manufacturers approving their use. This increase comes as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard, a mandate that was meant to encourage the use of domestic ethanol in U.S. gasoline supplies, and supporters claim it helps reduce carbon pollution and cuts American dependence on foreign fuel. Higher ethanol blends, however, void new motorcycle warranties and have been reported to cause damage to motorcycle fuel systems and other engine components. Interestingly, while the EPA announcement of the 18.11 billion-gallon figure is significantly above the 17.4 billion gallons initially proposed in May, it falls far below the 22.3 billion-gallon amount laid out by Congress in 2007 legislation and raises new questions about the viability of the controversial Renewable Fuel Standard moving forward. As part of its 2016 Legislative Agenda, the MRF will continue to call for further motorcycle engine testing with these blends and seek manufacturer recommendations regarding their use, and as always, the MRF will continue to keep its members apprised of any actions regarding the ethanol issue. THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER Alethia Riders Alethia Riders was founded in 2010 by Leonard Torres at New Beginnings Church of God with the encouragement of Pastor Richard Mansfield. Alethia Riders started as a riding group with eight members, it was our way to fellowship after church and weekends. In 2011 our group had a vision to help students get ready for school by offering back packs and supplies to needy families. We were able to supply 50 students with back packs and the basic supplies they need to start the year; we are now able to supply 200 students. Alethia Riders have slowly left being “riders” and have become part of New Beginnings Church Ministry. Since then Alethia Riders have been able to bless the community by: Helping a single mom heat her home and provide Christmas gifts for the family. Feed the hungry at least once a month. Participate in bike runs to help the needy and God’s Warehouse. Provide over 200 children with back to school supplies and backpacks. Partner with New Path Ministry and God’s Warehouse to feed the needy on Thanksgiving Day. Bless children from Amistad Crises/Runaway shelter with a Christmas dinner and gifts. Provided over 100 Christmas gifts to the homeless containing gloves, scarfs, shocks, and beanies to keep them warm during cold winter nights. We have had a great year and are getting ready for 2016. We will bless more families and children. We have already scheduled our back “Kick Stand for Kids” pack bike run for June 11.2016. 9 10 THE NMMRO NEWSLETTER Biker Day at the Roundhouse: Saturday, 13 Feb. Save the Date For the last few years, courtesy of the hard work of Jennifer Buntz and the Duke City Wheelmen, the bicycling community has been included in the annual Bike Day rally, which has been pulled off due to the heavy lifting of Annette Torrez and the New Mexico Motorcyclist Rights Organization. Thus, the rally has been a joint one of the bicycling and motorcycling communities. This year, the rally is also endorsed by the Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico while Tony Farrar, owner of New Mexico Bike N Sport, is welcoming us to his shop as a greeting and staging area, as his bike shop is ideally suited for a short ride down quiet roads to the Roundhouse. Diane Albert and I, on behalf of BCNM, will provide pizza. Bicycling writer and cartoonist Patrick O'Grady has offered to help with a cartoon for a poster. We need to show up and use this to highlight the legislative issues that are important to both groups, including holding road users accountable with better laws that sanction dangerous driving, and by promoting a statewide complete streets policy. Bad roads and abrupt three inch drop-offs on shoulders are dangerous, whether on a Bianchi or a Harley-Davidson. We will also honor the late Andrew Wright, who was co-owner of Platinum Level Bicycle Friendly Business Bicycle Technologies International of Santa Fe. Andrew was killed last year when someone in a jeep pulled in front of his Ducati.
