Old St. Mary`s Church - Old St. Mary`s Catholic Church
Old St. Mary’s Church 1500 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60605 - Chicago’s First Catholic Parish - Established in 1833 - The Paulist Fathers serving our parish since 1903. Page Two OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH O P M OLD ST. MARY’S IS WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the South Loop and greater Chicago area. Large print missalettes are available near the entrance. Please return them after Mass. Special hosts are available in the sacristy for those who are gluten intolerant. Do you have difficulty walking to the front of the church for communion? As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. Please ask an usher to let the communion ministers know where you are so the ministers can bring communion to you. Receiving the Body of Christ is too important to miss out. The ministers do scan the congregation, so if you forget to let an usher know, put your hand up so they can see you. We want to accommodate you. Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/116946404986272 PRAYER REQUEST Please pray for those novices and seminarians who are preparing for ministry to the Church with the Paulist Fathers, who have staffed Old St. Mary’s since 1903. In late November, Advent began the new liturgical year; December 8, the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy; this coming Friday, the New Year 2016. In today’s Gospel, after three days of anguish, Mary tells Jesus how desperately she and Joseph have been searching for him. Mary could be speaking for the whole human race. With religious persecutions raging, international and domestic conflicts seething, our family and friends suffering various difficulties, not to mention our own personal problems, how much our world needs Jesus as another New Year veiled in mystery begins! As we pray for God’s mercy to enfold our world and embrace each of us in 2016, let our New Year’s resolution be to live the Jubilee Year of Mercy by being for others, as Mary was, a channel of God’s mercy and an instrument of Christ’s peace. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. The light of mercy and salvation for all the world, the light of truth for every man, for the human family, and for individual families. This light which comes from the Holy Family encourages us to offer human warmth in those family situations in which for various reasons, peace is lacking, harmony is lacking, and forgiveness is lacking. May our concrete solidarity not diminish especially with regard to families who are experiencing more difficult situations due to illness, unemployment, discrimination, the need to emigrate...Let us pause here for a moment and pray in silence for all these families in difficulty, whether due to problems of illness, unemployment, discrimination, need to emigrate, due to difficulty in understanding each other and also to disunion. Let us pray in silence for all these families. +Pope Francis11 From Crossing the Threshold of Mercy, A Spiritual Guide for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, edited by Mark-David Janus, CSP, PhD. If you are considering making charitable gifts at this time, please consider a gift to Old St. Mary’s Parish. From a tax perspective, gifts of securities, real estate or other assets that have gone up in value since they were acquired are the hands-down winners. Why? Because donors receive a double tax benefit: they can deduct the full fair market value of their appreciated assets—if owned for more than one year—and they save again by avoiding all capital gains taxes on their “paper profit.” If you would like to make a gift to the parish and have any questions or concerns, please contact our Tax statements will automatically be issued to everyone for whom we have an email address and a record of contributions for 2015. If you will need a tax statement, please make sure we have your current email address. You can update your email address in a number of ways. 1. Visit our website www.oldstmarys.com and click on the JOIN/INFORM US tab and select Information Update Form. 2. Visit our website and send us a message by clicking on Contact Us in the upper right hand corner of the website. 3. Send an email to bulletin@oldstmarys or [email protected]. Whichever method you choose, please be sure to send us the information by January 15, 2016. We will begin issuing statements the week of January 18, 2016. For those of you who do not have and email address, your statement will be sent by surface mail. Please make sure we have your correct address.
