2015 tav program - Texas Advantage Volleyball Club
Welcome to 2015 Texas Advantage Volleyball! Rated by Triple Crown Sports as the #1 Club in the US Rated by Lonestar Volleyball as the #1 Club in Texas for the 11 th Year in a Row!! I am continually asked why we continue to be the Number One Club in Texas and achieve such a high level of success. There are the obvious factors such as amazing coaches, solid techniques, and very competitive kids. Another reason is the amount of training and support we can achieve in weekly practices and performance training. Our goal is to provide a reasonably priced place for every level of volleyball player to drill, practice and play in a way that leads to future success. We believe that at TAV, we are one of the best in the country at providing that service. Many of the other clubs promise you great things, tout that they are number one in something, trying to convince you to play at their club. At TAV we walk the walk. For 11 straight years we have shown that we are the best at what we do. Join the Team. While it is great to be recognized number one, our measure of success is the TAV teams competing at all levels of local tournaments, the TAV teams participating in post season events, the TAV teams competing for USAV and AAU National Championships and Medals, and the significant number TAV kids playing in college or professionally. The coaches and trainers that implement our training system are some of the best and most energetic in the country at developing our players’ volleyball and personal potential. Unfortunately new coaches don’t just show up ready to coach, they go through a difficult training and certification process that takes both time and experience. This year we are again adding some amazing new coaches to our system. While TAV is considered the elite club, equally important is our Limited Travel, Metro Program, MidCities programs and now our TAV Amarillo, TAV Aledo, and TAV Beach programs. All are designed around training coaches and players using our TAV System. Our TAV System is consistent and provides hitting, blocking, serving and passing techniques, as well as defensive and offensive systems which will improve players’ club and high school potential regardless of whether they choose to play in college or not. Our staff consists of Olympic coaches, college coaches, ex college players, high school coaches, full-time coaches as well as training coaches, each armed with the TAV System and ready to develop their teams. So if you want to earn a spot, improve your game or compete for a college opportunity, TAV is a great place to be. In the past two years 58 players committed to play in college. Each year our facility hosts over 200 college coaches watching our practices, tournaments and checking on potential athletes. We are pleased that scholarship opportunities have become available for many different levels of our program from elite to local. If you are looking for a volleyball home, come and check us out. We know we aren’t perfect, but Donna and I and our excellent staff are dedicated to providing great service, continued improvement and are always willing to discuss philosophies and policies. Our goal is still that every girl that wants to play volleyball can find a spot at TAV, regardless of financial means or ability. Talk to our coaches, players, staff and parents and find out what we are all about. See you on the courts! Regards, John and Donna Sample 2015 TAV PROGRAM TAV Directors John Sample - President Donna Sample - Vice-President L.J. Tryouts, Can’t Live with them, Can’t Live without them! For many, tryouts can be the best weekend of their lives, or it can be the worst weekend of the year. TAV has refined the tryout process in order to make it what most of us consider the fairest tryout process around. Clubs around the country have modeled their process after our tryout evaluation. TAV has the reputation that you must earn your position and continue earning that position. Our history in the collegiate ranks is excellent because of the competitive nature of our club and the technical instructions received during season. Join us and compete! How does it work? For all 14’s, 15’s and 16’s teams, the first tryout is by position, or by multiple positions. One of our expert coaches in that position will grade every player that tries out in that position. Each of these scores is entered into a computer and a ranking by position is then available. Knowing that no two coaches score exactly the same, we also have either two or three other coaches grading and scoring each of the positions as well, and when all are tabulated we compare the two sets of scores. In the case of a large discrepancy we will re-evaluate the player. Each age group coach gets a copy of the rankings and can make notes or suggestions for each player. We will be available to answer limited questions after each tryout on where a player ranks, based upon that tryout and the players that were at that tryout and the players we are expecting in the case of players missing tryouts due to tournaments or playoffs. The player will be told that they are top 10, 20, 30, 40 etc. At the second tryout, all positions are together and the age group coaches and a separate team selection committee begin the process of re-ranking the players based upon performance on the court with other players and finalize a team selection recommendation. Once the teams are selected by the age group coach and the committee, John Sample reviews the differences in the two recommendations prior to a final selection being made. If there is a question between two players, they are further evaluated by another set of coaches and if tied and one is a past TAV player, the TAV player is awarded the position. Teams are then pulled as they are selected and sent to conference rooms for meeting, paperwork and fitting. HOW DO I SELECT A TRYOUT OR MULTIPLE TRYOUTS There are always conflicts in tryout times. Picking the one that gives you the best option and the best chance is sometimes difficult. We schedule multiple times for tryouts in order to give players more than one opportunity to shine. It is important to attend positional clinics at TAV to give you the best chance of being seen by the coaching staff. These positional clinics allow you to get a feel for our club and our staff prior to the actual tryouts. You should attend some other clinics so you can feel comfortable with your tryout choices. Rank your clubs in order of interest and attend the initial tryout for the club that you have ranked highest. However, be sure to leave options for yourself by attending more than one tryout. Often players will choose to tryout for a club that only has limited space in an age group and they will not get an offer. Since they didn’t go to other tryouts, they do not have a back-up plan. Make sure that you go to a tryout for a club that has multiple teams per age group, even if it is for a back-up offer. Finally, be honest with each club. If they are your back-up, let them know. They will understand. Also, respond to ANY offer as quickly as possible. Even though offers must stay on the table for a period of time, if you let each club know that yes you are going to accept, no you aren’t going to accept or that you are considering all your options, the club can make the appropriate communications with the rest of the players that have tried out. Remember to communicate openly since the worst feeling in the world is waiting to hear something after a tryout. Not knowing anything is worse than not making a team. The level of teams and the number of teams in each age group will be determined at tryouts. After the first positional tryout we will begin selecting teams during the tryouts. We will invite a number of athletes to join a specific team. An athletes’ spot on a team is confirmed once she or he has signed the acceptance agreement and paid the team’s non-refundable installment (please see payment plan for amount due). All offers will be made in accordance with the USAV-North Texas Region Offer and Acceptance Policy. This installment acts as the athlete’s commitment to join and is the first payment to TAV. Additional payments will be due according to the enclosed schedule. If at all possible, we recommend athletes attempt to attend all tryouts in their age group. While we understand the need to try out for other clubs to find the one that best suits each person, attending all the tryouts will give us the best opportunity to see each athlete. During our tryout process, the athletes will undergo several evaluations where each athlete is individually rated on her skill level in all areas, then evaluated by position. The players are then placed into teams so their overall court skills, attitude, and interaction with other players can be evaluated. Creating game-like situations is a priority throughout the tryouts. If during the tryout process you decide to go to another tryout, please make the TAV staff aware of your choices so we can deal with it appropriately. Also during the tryout process if your player is pressured to make a commitment to another club prior to our last tryout, please don’t hesitate to contact us to get an evaluation. Last year we held costs on most of our teams. This year with a new larger facility we again looked at our schedules, training, airfares, hotel costs and figured out how to play in more competitive tournaments than last year and still keep the prices in line for TAV teams. We recognize that many people are worried, as are we, and we are trying to find ways to reduce costs. We will continue to do so during the year. You have the ability to work off a good portion of fees at TAV, at our concession stand at the ballpark, at our facility or in fundraisers. Question? Can we work off some of our dues at TAV? Answer! TAV offers many ways to reduce fees. We have ballpark concessions, TAV concessions, tryouts, fund raisers, tournament work, clean up, facility work, casino party, and other fund raisers. If your daughter wants to play and your family is willing to work, we can make it happen. Question? Who are the coaches that coach the various teams for TAV? Answer! Both current and ex-college coaches, Olympians, high school coaches, junior high and former players coach. We are always looking for good coaches with a commitment to kids. 24 of our coaches have been with TAV for 10 years or over, and 15 of our coaches have been with TAV over 12 years! Each of our coaches is being trained with additional sessions by Ping Cao, renowned coach and LJ Sariego, clinician. Question? Our kids play multiple sports, how can they play club volleyball? Answer! Although our elite level of volleyball makes it very difficult to play multiple sports we do have levels that are divided by ability, time, price and commitment. Question? What kind of practice commitments does TAV have? Answer! Our elite teams practice twice per week, our limited travel practice twice a week and our local metro teams practice once a week and this year elite players will have performance training once per week. If a practice is missed, it can be made up with another team. Question? What is the cost of playing club? Answer! The costs vary from $5,800 per season for our top elite teams to $900 per season for metro teams for regular season play. Question? How many players have a chance at a college scholarship? Answer! We are averaging around 28 college scholarships a year for the past 6 years. Last year we had 29 players who accepted scholarships. While playing is no guarantee, all players who continued playing and made a team at TAV were offered opportunities to play in college. TAV currently has over 142 players playing on college teams this year with most playing as starters. Question? Are the teams already set for the ‘15 season? Answer! No, we have around a 25-30% turnover in each team every year. Tryouts are real and are held so coaches can see progress and abilities and committees assist the coaches in their final selections for teams at the tryouts. Coaches watch hundreds of matches each high school season and have a great idea of playing ability, but it still comes down to who comes to tryouts! 2015 TAV Club Information Register on Website – Go to ascvb.com and select register for tryout Fill out necessary paperwork Decide which level you desire your player to participate Mid-Cities Satellite Program – “team grassroots ” practice at local schools DOES NOT REQUIRE A TRYOUT Metro Locals Program – individual training and team competition on local level DOES NOT REQUIRE A TRYOUT Limited Travel Teams – more intensive training and team competition within Texas Region including a qualifier and/or major tournament Team Names – National, Club, American, Select REQUIRES TRYOUT Elite Travel Teams – Intense training and team competition in the Open and Club Divisions on a National level Team Names –Black, Blue, Molten, Advantage REQUIRES TRYOUT How Good is TAV? Randy possesses a MS Degree in Exercise Science with a focus on athletic performance enhancement and injury prevention specifically with female athletes. He is recognized by many physicians, physical therapists and coaches in the metroplex as the premier female athlete training specialist and an expert on ACL injury prevention programs. Serious knee injuries are sidelining female athletes at an alarming rate – each year in the US 1 in 100 high school female athletes will suffer a serious knee injury, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries being the most common. Most of these are non-contact injuries occurring in sports that involve pivoting, cutting, or jumping/landing. Scientific research has proven that volleyball athletes who consistently train in an appropriate, comprehensive performance training program are less susceptible to injury and experience better success on the court. At Breakthrough Performance, our mission is to fully develop the mind and body of student athletes and to reduce their risk of injury by improving athletic performance, movement skill development, and conditioning through age/gender appropriate programs administered in an educational and safe environment. All athletes will be passionately coached, safely evaluated, and encouraged to reach specific fitness and performance goals they never thought possible! I. PROGRAM OVERVIEW Breakthrough Performance is dedicated to providing an advanced approach to performance training for young female athletes. The Breakthrough Performance Athletic Enhancement and Injury Prevention Training Program, has been specifically developed from our extensive research as an effective way to transform how female athletes perform both on and off the field of play. Using the latest scientific research, we focus on age appropriate strength and conditioning exercises and proper warm up/cool down instruction which both improve their performance and reduce their chances for injury. What makes this training so unique? The selection and progression of exercises, movements, and jumps were carefully researched to address specific problems observed in female athletes. Our program is designed to reduce overuse injuries by focusing on developing overall core and leg strength as well as improving balance in strength and athletic movement patterns. Of special focus is teaching female athletes how to decelerate correctly, because many knee injuries result from a sudden stop or change of direction with improper alignment or body positioning. A component of this program will be a functional movement assessment which includes a recommended plan in the event any injury risks are identified. This will be a complete and comprehensive program that will surely give the athletes a competitive edge on the competition now and a head-start at the collegiate level and beyond for those who choose that path. II. VOLLEYBALL PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT AND INJURY PREVENTION TRAINING PROGRAM Breakthrough Performance will create custom designed activities for the athletes of TAV. Working in groups of up to 15 athletes per training session, a creative blend of strength training and conditioning methods will be used to enhance performance and promote injury prevention. Injury Prevention – The program is designed to improve each athlete’s resistance to injury by improving proper movement bio-mechanics as well as core strength and neuromuscular control. ACL injury mechanisms have been studied and addressing trunk dominance “core dysfunction”, ligament dominance, leg dominance, and quadriceps dominance, has been proven to have a positive effect on improving an athlete’s resistance to serious knee injury; Movement Preparation – A volleyball specific dynamic warm-up that raises core temperature and puts muscles through a full range of motion to enhance training effect. Movement Skills – A series of highly efficient, sport-specific movements used to increase athletic characteristics such as first step quickness, acceleration, deceleration, multidirectional movement mechanics, agility, and mobility. Plyometrics – Exercises designed to develop explosive power at high rate and elasticity in muscle. The power developed here not only produces an increased vertical jump for blocking, hitting, and serving, but also correlates to a quicker first step. Strength, Power, & Flexibility – Exercises developed based on individual movement patterns and implemented to increase strength, add stability, enhance mobility and power. Holding a block, attacking, passing/receiving, defending all require athletes to be strong, stable and flexible. Energy System Development – Maximizing aerobic and/or anaerobic threshold levels needed for outstanding athletic performance and improved work capacity. All things being equal (e.g. skills, talent, knowledge of the game, no mental errors), the team whose best conditioned will usually win the match…period; Volleyball Performance Training (VPT) – VPT will be integrated throughout the program to ensure carry over for optimal performance on the court during training and each match. Competence breeds confidence. III. PERFORMANCE TRAINING STAFF EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS Randy Brewer and Breakthrough Performance will provide a training staff that meets the highest standards of ethics and applicable knowledge. Randy Brewer MS, PES (NASM), CES (NASM) – Sportsmetrics Certified Justin McLemore BS (UT college athlete) - Technician in Physical Therapy Practice Randy Varner MS, CPT (NASM) Additional staff are being interviewed and evaluated on an ongoing basis “The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along with the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them!” Dennis Waitley Tentative Coaching Staff 2015 TENTATIVE 2015 TAV COACHES 18's 14’s John Sample Jason Nicholson Bailey Hunter Teresa Dunn Jon Nasgowitz Arthur Stanfield Kathy Stanfield JP Gomez Rhae Walderman Luis Nazario Arthur Stanfield 17's Ping Cao Corinne Revsbeck Whitney Sample Taylour Tosso Ivan Galvan Ashley Byrd 16's Geoff Kiessling Mary Shaw Gretchen Midkiff Noel Caballero Nick Gay Adrimaris Bravo Debbie Hanlan Kevin Miller Rachel Bedell Jen Lawson 13's Corinne Atchison James Turk Kristi Hopkins Leslie Jackson Kathy Goings Kristin Secord Trava Smith Reagan Smith Kylie Pickrell Kaitlyn Mitcham Joe Olson Alex Olson 15's LJ Sariego Claire Rose Larry Smith Hannah Herndon Roger Craft Robyn Wallace Nicole Weis Leslie Stuer May Allen Aniah Hatfield-Philo 12's James Turk Peyton Haller David Yan Shali Farrell Sarah Black Lexi Maclean Temesha Edwards Cathy Kahlig 11's Tadam Mergener Bri Burkert Nichaela Huska Micaya White Travel Rules – TAV These rules are intended to supplement and reinforce the TAV Rules and Regulations, not replace them. Additionally, TAV reserves the right to do random luggage checks during out of town travel tournaments. The drug test will be conduced by a certified lab and positive results will be shared with player, parents and TAV owners after a second test is evaluated. Penalties for Rule Infractions Players violating any of the above rules at a tournament requiring an overnight hotel stay will be subject to discipline as deemed appropriate by the coaching staff and/or TAV personnel. Penalties will primarily consist of reductions in playing time, to be served starting with the team’s next match. If a violation occurs at a tournament where play has already been completed, or occurs while traveling home from a tournament, the penalty will be served beginning with the first match of the next tournament in which the team participates. Continued violations may result in suspension or termination of player contract with TAV. If the club, the coaching staff, or other TAV personnel incur a financial obligation due to a violation of the above rules, players will be required to repay the obligation in addition to other penalties imposed. Players violating the drug, alcohol or tobacco rules will be subject to immediate suspension pending evaluation of the situation. TAV reserves the right to terminate our agreement with no refunds should the drug, alcohol, or tobacco rules be violated. I have read the rules above and agree to comply with them. I understand that penalties for violations of these rules may be imposed by the team’s coaching staff, as well as by other TAV staff or personnel. ______________________________ Signature of Player _____________________ Date ______________________________ Texas Advantage Volleyball _____________________ Date Parents Information 1).
