with a grass area and walkway for
the residents to enjoy. All this was
made possible by the dedication and
hard work of Oya Koko Foundation.
Residents and family members enjoyed the tea party with an array of delicious savory and sweet treats prepared by Chef Carlos and his team. The menu consisted of tea sandwiches, assorted scones, fresh fruit with clotted cream, petite fours, cookies, raspberry lemonade and of course, English tea. Thank you to Chef
Carlos and his team for the mouth watering food enjoyed by all.

New Residents
Help us welcome our

Tai Chi has been described as “meditation in motion”,
but based on recent studies Tai Chi could be called
“medication in motion”. Harvard Women's Health
Watch states there is growing evidence that
practicing Tai Chi has value in treating or preventing
many health problems. People can start doing Tai Chi
even if they aren't in top shape or the best of health.
Tai Chi differs from other types of exercise as the
movements are usually circular and never forced, the
muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, and the
joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective
tissues are not stretched. Tai chi can be easily
adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people
confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery.
Although tai chi is slow and gentle and doesn't leave
you breathless, it addresses the key components of
fitness — muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to
a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning. Here's some of
the evidence:
Muscle strength. Tai chi can improve both lowerbody strength and upper-body strength. When
practiced regularly, tai chi can be comparable to
resistance training and brisk walking.
According to internist Dr. Gloria Yeh, an assistant
professor at Harvard Medical School, "Tai chi
strengthens both the lower and upper extremities and
also the core muscles of the back and abdomen."
Flexibility. Tai chi can boost upper- and lowerbody flexibility as well as strength.
Balance. Tai chi improves balance and, according
to some studies, reduces falls. Proprioception - the
ability to sense the position of one's body in space declines with age. Tai chi helps train this sense,
which is a function of sensory neurons in the inner
ear and stretch receptors in the muscles and
ligaments. Tai chi also improves muscle strength and
flexibility, which makes it easier to recover from a
stumble. Fear of falling can make you more likely to
fall; some studies have found that tai chi training
helps reduce that fear.
Aerobic conditioning. Depending on the speed
and size of the movements, tai chi can provide some
aerobic benefits.

Tanabata
Residents took part in celebrating the Japanese holiday, Tanabata, also known as the “Star Festival”
by participating in traditional Tanabata activities. Satoko and Sachiko hang tanzaku, small strips of
colored paper with wishes written by the residents, some in the form of poetry.
Tanabata—The Story of Star Crossed Lovers
Tanabata originated from a Chinese legend called Qixi and was brought to Japan in the 8th century.
This is the story of two lovers. Princess Orihime, the seamstress, wove beautiful clothes by the heavenly
river, represented by the Milky Way. Because Orihime worked so hard weaving beautiful clothes, she
became sad and despaired of ever finding love. Her father, who was a God of the heavens, loved her
dearly and arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi, the cow herder who lived on the other side of the
Milky Way. The two fell in love instantly and married. Their love and devotion was so deep that Orihime stopped weaving and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to wander the heavens.
Orihime’s father became angry and forbade the lovers to be together, but Orihime pleaded with him
to allow them to stay. He loved his daughter, so he decreed that the two star-crossed lovers could meet
once a year--on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime returned to her weaving. On the first day they
were to be reunited, they found the river (Milky
Way) to be too difficult to cross. Orihime
became so despondent that a flock of magpies
came and made a bridge for her. It is said that if
it rains on Tanabata, the magpies will not come,
and the two lovers must wait another year to be
reunited, so Japanese always wish for good
weather on Tanabata. There are many variations of
this story, but this version is the most widely held.

“Tatau: Marks of Polynesia” is a photographic exploration of Samoan tattoo practice.
It explores the beauty of Samoan tattoos as well as the key role they play in the
preservation and propagation of Samoan culture. Through photographs taken in the
studio and on location in Samoa and elsewhere, the exhibition showcases the work
of traditional Samoan tattoo masters alongside that of younger practitioners working
within and influenced by the tradition today. Samoa’s tatau, along with Japan’s
irezumi, is one of the world’s most distinctive living tattoo traditions. An indigenous
art form with a continuous history that dates back 2,000 years.

Harajuku Cosplay
TIt’s probably one of the most unique things to do in Tokyo:
Followers of Japanese comics and animation- Manga and
Anime – decided they enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters. You may have heard of it in one of its different names
– Cosplay, Japanese teenage culture and Harajuku fashion. It
was created in Tokyo, and evolved into an international trend.
Cosplay comes from the words costume + play.
Some say it’s the attempt of Japanese youth to turn their back
to traditional customs and strict social standards.
It happens every Sunday in the wonderful district of Harajuku,
on Jingu Bridge (a pedestrian bridge that connects Meiji Jingu
shrine to Harajuku and Omotesando. Harujuku girls and boys
are just hanging out with friends, hoping their picture will be
taken by one of the many magazine photographers in the
crowd.
