ADVOCACY
Dear Friends,
Or rather, “Dear Superheroes!” You are certainly all heroes to us. The heroic acts of so many
dedicated volunteers, donors, corporations and friends like you are a source of tremendous pride.
While we hail from such diverse places as Philadelphia, PA, Rehoboth Beach, DE and Vineland, NJ,
we all share one common bond – to help our ALS families live fuller lives and to create a world
without ALS.
Lewis Carroll wrote more than a century ago, “All that is worth the doing is what we do for
others.” How true this rings today. On behalf of our board and staff, thank you for everything
you “do.” Your extraordinary talents helping others are the essence of this Annual Report.
Sincerely,
Jim Pinciotti
Executive Director

Regions Served
A Leader in Global Research
The ALS Association has committed more than $58 million to
find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Our global research effort has helped increase the number
of scientists working on ALS, advanced new discoveries and
treatments, and has shed light on the complex genetic and
environmental factors involved in ALS.
The ALS Association has made significant research milestones in
the fight against ALS, including:
• T he groundbreaking discovery of the ALS gene, SOD1,
responsible for 20 percent of all inherited ALS cases.
• D
iscovery of ALS6 in 2009, a new gene responsible for
about 5% of all inherited ALS cases.
• T he first clinical trial of ISIS-SOD1, a new drug that
specifically targets the SOD1 gene
“The astonishing pace of new ALS disease gene
discoveries in the last three years has invigorated
ALS research…“ – Aaron D. Gitler, PhD, Department of
Genetics; Stanford University School of Medicine
In the past year, these two very
important discoveries were made:
aR
esearchers find genetic region influencing
age at which people develop ALS
a Identification of C9RAN translated peptide
TREAT ALS™ Research Projects
Stem Cells
In 2013, The ALS Association provided grants to 37
researchers in seven countries throughout the world to
further the fight against ALS. The Association’s Global
Research Program TREAT ALS™ continues to support
a diverse but strategic portfolio of research grants
focused on a better understanding of the disease.
This program is based on “collaboration” which
forges partnerships among investigators, government
officials, pharmaceutical and biotech companies,
academic institutions, and other individual leaders.
Advocacy Is an important
part of our Chapter’s mission. People
with ALS and their families share their
stories and make a huge impact.

National Advocacy
Each May, The ALS Association holds an Advocacy Day and Public Policy
conference in Washington, DC. We meet with every legislator representing
our service area—22 in all—to educate them about ALS and urge their
support for The ALS Association’s Public Policy Priorities.
State Advocacy
National Legislative Priorities
We also conduct advocacy efforts
on the state level. We are currently
working with the Pennsylvania
legislature to receive funding for ALS
programs and services.
THE ALS REGISTRY and ALS RESEARCH PROGRAM AT THE US
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
On January 16, 2014, Congress passed legislation, which was ultimately
signed by President Obama, that included an additional $7.5 million
for the ALS Research program at the Department of Defense and an
additional $6.5 million for the National ALS Registry. This is ENORMOUS.
And only possible because of our ALS advocates who came to DC, wrote
to their legislators, and were heard!
• T he Greater Philadelphia Chapter
and the Western Pennsylvania
Chapter of The ALS Association are
working together to seek funding
and support from the state of
Pennsylvania. With the help of Rep.
Bryan Cutler, Rep. David Millard,
Sen. Pat Vance, and other allies
in Harrisburg, we have secured a
$300,000 Item in the State Budget
in 2013 and 2014.
Men and women who have served in the U.S. military are 50 percent more
likely than civilians to develop ALS.
The funding for the Registry is an 11% increase over last year. The Registry
may become the single largest ALS research project ever created; it is
designed to identify ALS cases across the US and improve care for people
living with ALS and will help scientists, government entities that study
the disease, and others in the ALS community to learn what causes the
disease, how it can be treated and even prevented.

Patient Services
Our Family Helping Yours
It is often said that ALS affects not only the patient
but their family as well. Each day can bring new
challenges in which children and loved ones and
members of their support network may need
assistance coping and providing care. The ALS
Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter is here
for families through every step of their journey.
The Chapter’s Lea R. Powell ALS Patient
Services Program offers comprehensive support
and resources for ALS families.

THE HEART OF
THE CHAPTER
ALS Association Clinics
The Chapter supports interdisciplinary centers to treat and assist people with ALS at
Pennsylvania Hospital, Hershey Medical Center and The Lehigh Valley Medical Center.
Each person with ALS sees up to 12 specialists in a single visit. The Chapter also
supports an ALS Treatment Center at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA.
The Howard I. Abrams In-Home Care Program
provides in-home care to assist with such things
as bathing, dressing and grooming. In FY2014,
90 patients received 16,905 hours of care.
Respite Care
9 ventilator patients received 313 hours of care.
22 patients not on ventilators received 625 hours
of care.
The Marjorie Shimer Equipment Loan Program
loaned more than 562 wheelchairs, hospital beds and
other durable medical equipment (not covered by
insurance) to patients throughout our service area.
The Scott A. Mackler, MD, PhD Assistive
Technology Program provides tools such as iPads,
and other devices to assist with daily living. 75
communications kits were sent out and 241 patients
were seen by our Assistive Technology Specialist.

Recreation
Recreational activities become very important
to those with limited movement and provide
respite for caregivers in the form of a fun,
relaxing endeavor.
Programs included ALS family trips to Longwood
Gardens with 187 attendees. 25 patients and
many of their friends and family members visited
Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, NJ and the Annual
Holiday Party drew 295 guests who enjoyed
music by Hot Hot Hot Entertainment, caricatures,
balloon art, henna tattooing, food, fun gifts
and games.
The Creighton family enjoys a special moment with
the Phillie Phanatic at the annual Holiday Party.
Home Helpers sponsored a Caregivers Skills Day
attended by 45 eager-to-learn family caregivers.
Resources and Seminars
provide outstanding education for ALS patients and
their families as well as caregivers to learn more
about treatment. They are an excellent way to share
stories and meet with others in their same position.

Be An ALS Superhero
Establish a Community of Hope
Lois Dubin learned about ALS in 1982 when her husband and
father of their five children was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s
Disease. Leonard lost his battle in 1985. Now, Lois’ son, Jim, is
fighting the disease. To honor their brave fight and help raise
critical dollars to support patient services, programs and research
to find a cure, Lois Dubin created a Community of Hope Fund,
The Jim and Dad ALS Fund. It is one of 61 Funds that have
helped to raise over $106,000 since its inception in 2008.
Give at your Workplace – it’s so easy
WORKPLACE GIVING IS EASY – Please remember the Chapter
when you give through the United Way or Community Health
Charities (CHC). We are a member agency of CHC which
participates in state and local government campaigns, corporate
campaigns, and the Pennsway campaign for employees of the
University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine.
Your gift helps people just like Milt Sierra of Delanco, NJ

THE PHILLIES – SUPERHEROES
BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD
“The best part is seeing patients who have been around for years.
The ones that do make it back…their face will just light up. You don’t
need to talk to someone to know that you are bringing happiness into
their lives. No one necessarily likes to give up their off day – this is the
day that no one (on the Phillies) complains about – it’s such an
important date.” – Jimmy Rollins
The Phillies and The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter have been
teammates since 1984. The team has raised a total of $14.3 million for the Chapter since we
became the team’s principal charity. The 2013 annual Phillies Phestival raised over $860,731. Several
members of the Phillies organization serve on the Chapter’s Board of Directors as well. The Phillies family
has played in ALS golf outings, supported our Annual Luncheon, joined in our Walk to Defeat ALS® and
visited with our patients at the Penn ALS Center.

We remember those who lost their
lives to ALS 2/1/13- 1/31/14
They are our mothers, our fathers, our sons, our daughters, our grandparents,
our co-workers, veterans who fought for our country, sports celebrities, actors,
doctors and friends. They have touched us in so many ways. They are the REAL
Superheroes. And we will miss them every single day.
