Patricia ‘Pat’ Fitzgerald
7
in Loving Memory
December 20, 1956 - November 30 2012
Patricia Jean (Pat) Fitzgerald
was the loving daughter of
Ralph and Frances Sloan. She
was born in Reno, Nev. and
grew up in Downey, Calif. Pat’s
parents moved her to Arizona
roughly 20 years ago, where
she was blessed to meet Ray
(Still Ray). Pat and Ray were
married shortly after meeting
and had a son, Tommy. Pat was
absolutely Ray’s best friend as
well as the love of his life. She
adored her family and friends.
She loved animals, especially
dogs. She cherished the simple
things in life, and was a huge
source of strength for many.
She was an inspiration to
all. Here was a woman that
knew hardly anything about water services and taught herself everything to
start and maintain a flourishing family
business. She showed us all that you
can do anything you put your mind to.
Look at what a wonderful family she
raised while devoting time to being an
officer in ABATE.
Pat loved to laugh and always
wore a huge smile. She was happiest and filled with freedom when
riding motorcycles. Our motorcycle
community would not be or have the
freedoms it does without Still Ray;
who could not have accomplished
what he has done without the support
and strength of his wonderful bride.
Pat stood strong for our rights and
especially our freedoms and ALWAYS
had Still Ray’s back. We (women of bikers) could all learn a lot from her.
Pat’s memorial was well attended;
not surprising considering how well
respected she was and is. I would like
to share with you what Doc from the
Journeymen wrote, “As many of you
know... Pat was there with us, &
made her presence well known.
During the Celebration at Willow Lake Park, a Red Tailed Hawk
circled over us for quite a while.
Gliding majestically overhead,
it graced us with its presence...
The red tail of the hawk only appears when the bird reaches maturity. When looking to the human beside whom Red Hawk flies,
this is quite significant, for it
indicates that the Red Feathers
are not easily given, and must
instead be earned over time, as
Pat did.” Doc Pratt
She
is
survived
by
husband Ray Fitzgerald; mother
Frances Sloan; brother Ross
Sloan; children Chief Warrant
Officer III Jerod Murphy, Jackie Pennino, Constance Fitzgerald, and Thomas Fitzgerald; and grandchildren
Nick Murphy, Alexis Murphy, Christian
Murphy, Jerod Murphy Junior, and
Dominic Pennino.
I would like to commend the
Journeymen and their families for all
they have done for the Fitzgerald family. Thank you!!!!!!!
by someone who loved Pat
I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every
act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in
knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love. - Leo Buscaglia

Day With the Diamondbacks
November 15, 2012 was the day for the annual
Day with the Diamondbacks fundraiser, hosted by
Robert of Evil Twin Custom Cycles. Tickets for this
day’s game were $20 each to watch the D’backs vs
the SF Giants. Included in the fee was Diamond Club
seating at Chase Field and free motorcycle parking.
Monies raised by this gathering went to help
American Legion Riders Post 35 Chandler members
JoAnn & Ted King with medical bills. Theirs is such
a disturbing turn of events. Ted was diagnosed with
lymphoma in May. Just three weeks later, JoAnn
was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately,
Ted & JoAnn were not in attendance; neither at the
shop nor at the game. Ted’s chemo treatments, just
days before, left his immune system too low to be
out; plus he just wasn’t feeling up to it.
The day started out at the shop, located at 433
W Main in Mesa. The pre-ride gathering included
eats & drinks, with Scott manning the grill. This afternoon open house was filled with good cheer and
camaraderie.
Robert says he actually sold out of tickets four
times! People would buy tickets then donate them
back to the cause & he would sell them again. Before saddling up to ride out, Robert addressed the

group. He noted that this was the first time in the
nine times of his putting these fundraisers together
that the benefit was not for children. He expressed
his appreciation to everyone for their support.
Then he went into the drawings for the table full
of raffle goods. There were knives, hats, goggles,
gloves, apparel, an HD mailbox, flashlights, tools,
gift certificates, and a hand-made, one-of-a-kind
‘bashful’ biker kid. It was really cool, and a number
of raffle ticket holders had their eye on it.
As we rolled out from Evil Twin, we made a
brief detour into the parking lot at Chester’s Harley
Davidson to pick up additional riders. The parade to
the games, with some 250+ riders, went smoothly.
The ride maintained a steady pace, with minimal
interference from cages. The volunteer road guards
allowed for a ‘feet up’ run through the traffic signals. Robert had pre-arranged with Phoenix PD that
the ride would be heading to Chase Field. 4th Street
was set aside for bike parking only, which was WAY
cool. Your ticket fee covered parking; whereas cages
were getting nailed $15-20 in the lots.
The Diamond Club is a pretty neat setup for
groups like ours; as some people are into watching
the game, and others are simply there to support

the cause. We had a nice-sized group and everyone was in good spirits. The Diamond Club offers
a party lounge atmosphere with a private bar, pool
table, and big screen TVs. It allows for an enjoyable
gathering for everyone. The 50/50 was drawn at the
stadium, during the 7th Inning Stretch. The winner,
Scotty Brough, kept $100 and donated the $430 balance back to Ted & JoAnn. Very nice {:o)
As for the game, the D’backs gave it up to the
Giants, 3-2. In addition to the regular game, this was
the D’backs inaugural Alumni Night with an Exhibition game immediately following the main event.
When all was said & done, and the proceeds
were tallied, Robert was able to present a check to
Ted and JoAnn for $1,455.00. Although they were
unable to participate in the day’s festivities, Ted and
JoAnn expressed a great big THANK YOU to all
who participated.
This was a good outing and Robert thanks everyone who donated to this benefit for Ted & JoAnn.
Thank you to Sue and to Robert for additional information in regard to this report.

From Military To Civilian – A Seamless Transition
When members of the Armed Forces of the United States finish at least one year
of their tour of deployment they need to enroll in the Veterans Administration
(VA) program to obtain any VA Health Benefits they may be entitled to receive.
Service members need to enroll
PROMPTLY and do it NOW by following these steps:
•
Obtain a copy of your service medical records prior to discharge. Do
not take any shortcuts when separating and do this immediately. Any idea of hurrying to get home may cost you time and money should you require VA Healthcare
at any time in the future.
•
A veteran has two years, after separation, to apply for medical conditions that are a result of their service in the military. After two years the process
becomes more difficult.
•
If you require medical assistance from the VA after separation/discharge, bring with you a copy of your medical records, a copy of your DD214, and two forms of picture identification.
•
Any injury or illness incurred while serving on active duty as a regular,
reservist, or Federalized member of the National Guard needs to be noted in your
medical records.
•
Enroll in the VA IMMEDIATELY. Do Not Procrastinate!! Know
your rights and your responsibilities. If you are not sure, ASK-ASK-ASK-ASKASK!!! Ensure that your transition is smooth. Know what you need to do, and DO
IT!
•
Join a veterans service organization - American Legion, DAV, Rolling
Thunder®, VFW, AMVETS, Marine Corps League, Alliance of Marine Corps
Veterans, etc.
IT’S YOUR DUTY TO DO SO!
“WELCOME HOME, CONGRATULATIONS ON
A JOB WELL DONE, AND GOOD LUCK”

Advertiser Review: #1 Cycles & Machines
Roger Lockwood has been in business as #1
Cycles & Machines, LLC since 1991, specializing in
parts and service for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
Along with building and repairing bikes, Roger also
buys, sells, and trades motorcycles.
Roger has been riding, racing, building and
modifying Harley-Davidsons since the purchase
of his first H-D in 1979. In 1986, Roger built a 74”
shovelhead and tried his luck at drag racing. He entered the modified class at the AMRA drag races
and ran 11.53 at 118mph. That first experience fired
a love of racing & performance that holds strong to
this day. This passion, and his innate mechanical
ability, guided him to begin repairing and modifying
other people’s bikes in his garage. The next step
was to open his own shop, originally in Glendale AZ,
with the encouragement of family and friends.
Roger has some very knowledgeable and
skilled mechanics working with him. Gale, who is
also an MMI [Motorcycle Mechanics Institute] teacher, has worked at the shop for about 12 years. Chad
is another MMI instructor; a specialist in Dyno computer technology. Most recently, he hired Ray; who
is currently an MMI student.
Roger has recently done a full update on his
Dyno room. He & his team can help you dial in your
motor for optimum performance or simply give you
a read-out of how it is currently performing.
#1 Cycles & Machines, LLC offers a full service
center, including a welding and machine shop. You

can have all of your factory scheduled maintenance
done here; plus engine, transmission, and electrical repairs. Whether you need a basic oil change
or an entire engine rebuild, #1 Cycles & Machines,
LLC has you covered. Roger has over 25 years in
the industry, with experience on new model bikes in
addition to the older engines. If you are looking for
engine modifications on Ironheads, Shovelheads,
Evos, or TC88’s, Roger is the man for the job. Full
and partial restorations are welcome too.
Roger has gained a reputation in the Valley as
an accomplished machinist; and does machining
work for several shops in the Valley. He enjoys doing engine modifications on all types of HDs and can
take your bike from Mild to Wild.
In addition to stocking parts from all major distributors, Roger also has a talent for tracking down
older and hard-to-find parts.
Among Roger’s goals is to offer the best machining work in the Valley of the Sun. He is also intent on maintaining the reputation he has earned for
“getting the job done right”. So whether your bike is
destined for the street or the strip, it will be in good
hands with the team at #1 Cycles & Machines, LLC.
#1 Cycles & Machines, LLC is located at 14717
W. Bajada Dr; Surprise, AZ 85387. Hours are Monday-Friday, from 9a-6pm; Saturdays by appointment
only. Their phone number is 623-930-1337. Visit on

Elimination Of Motorcycle Emissions In Arizona – Final
12
www.hogwraps.blogspot.com
Only two defining forces have
ever offered to die for you:
Jesus Christ & the American GI.
One died for your soul;
the other for your freedom...
author unknown
Are you ready for the GREATEST NEWS ever,
that many of us have been working on for the better
part of 10 years? The EPA is about to APPROVE the
ADEQ’s State Implementation Plan (SIP), requesting the ELIMINATION OF EMISSIONS ON MOTORCYCLES IN MARICOPA COUNTY !!!
I just got a call from the Arizona Department of
Environmental Quality (ADEQ), stating the following:
As recently reported, the ADEQ had been expecting a ‘Disapproval Notice’ from the EPA on the
last SIP that they submitted, due to the Revision of
Ozone Levels at the federal level. Come to find out
that when EPA recently submitted their disapproval
draft to their D.C. headquarters for approval, the D.C.
office apparently had a change of mind and REVERSAL OF OPINION from the last time they dictated
what the EPA was to do.
According to ADEQ this morning, the D.C. office
just told the EPA that they were wrong, and that the
EPA was to APPROVE the ADEQ’s request for elimination of yearly motorcycle emissions in Maricopa/
Pinal County (AREA A). What happens next?
ADEQ expects the proposed EPA action to be
signed this week and published in the Federal Register within 2 weeks. That starts the approximately
30 day Public Comment and EPA response to Public
Comment period. Once that is complete, the EPA will
sign the final action and then have 2 weeks to publish that in the Federal Register. The entire process
should be FINAL and EFFECTIVE 60 days from that
time frame. This will make our Revised Arizona Statute become law.
The ADEQ will be working with Arizona’s MVD
during that 60 day time frame, to REVISE the registration forms to no longer state the requirement
of emissions on those motorcycles registered in
AREA A.
AZ Rider
Bottom line is that the elimination of yearly emissions on motorcycles in AREA A should be effective
by the end of first quarter of 2013 or before.
There have been many people involved in this
process over the last 10 years. Below is a list of
those specific to Motorcycle Lobbyists, State Legislators, ADEQ and MAG:
Motorcycle Lobbyists: Bobbi Hartmann, Carole
O’Reilly, Ray Huston, Mick Degn, Billy Larson, Janet
Reber, Steve Musgrave, Paul “Skypilot” Price
State Legislators – Primary Sponsors: Rep
Cooley, Rep Gabby Giffords, Rep Chase, Rep Avelar, Rep Brimhall, Rep Blendu, Rep Barnes, Rep
Huffman, Rep Jerry Weiers
Arizona Department Environmental Quality
(ADEQ): Nancy Wrona Director (past) Air Quality Division; Ira Domsky Deputy Director (retired) Air Quality Division; Mohan Toopal Technical Researcher;
Ginny Dickey Air Quality Division; Jim Buster Lobbyist; Eric Massey Director Air Quality Division; Trevor
Baggiore Deputy Director Air Quality Division; Bruce
Friedl Air Quality Planning
Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG):
Lindy Bauer, and staff
Gordon & Darby Testing: Rex A. Martin Waiver
Lane Supervisor
And last, but surely not least, all of the motorcycle riders and members of the many MRO’s, organizations, associations and clubs, that took the time
and effort to attend various public hearings and respond in force to the many ‘Calls to Action’ from the
lobby team.
It seems that all of our efforts from 2002 until
now, have finally paid off!!

Biker Santas
Everyone knows that Bikers have a huge heart
and when it comes to kids? Well there is nothing
they won’t do.
The American Legion Riders Post 35 Chandler
AZ is gearing up for their 6th Annual Toys for Tots
Ride to benefit the Marines Toys for Tots Program.
This year the ride will be held on November 24,
2012 starting with registration at Chester’s H-D in
Mesa from 8–10am. Coffee and donuts will be provided courtesy of Chester’s, and maybe a little more.
What better way to spend a 4 day weekend, after
being with family and cooking for 2 days?
This ride was started by Jesse Hendrix, a former
Marine, and his wife, Forbes, in 2007; in conjunction with the American Legion Riders of Post 35 in
Chandler AZ. This year, due to the happy event in
the Hendrix’s life of adopting two toddlers, they re-
grettably stepped down
as chairs of the ride. As
much as we hated to lose
Jesse and Forbes, as the
saying goes, the “SHOW
MUST GO ON”, right?
This year I am honored to be co-chairing
the event with Cristina
Sipos-Convery, a close
friend of many years and
fellow American Legion
Rider. We have a terrific committee from our
Post, all working hard
to make this ride bigger
and better for all of you
and, of course, for all the
children this event benefits. Your generosity will create smiles on their faces Christmas morning when
they see what “Santa” brought them.
The 74th St Band will again be rocking the riders
from 1 – 4 at the end party at American Legion Post
35, located at 2240 W Chandler Blvd, Chandler, AZ.
A great meal is being provided for all the riders and
of course, beer and soda. There will once again be
raffle prizes made possible by the generosity of local
businesses. The ride route has yet to be set in stone
but it will include some Legion Posts as always and
a local bar/restaurant.
Last year was a roaring success; thanks to the
volunteers and of course all of you in the riding
community. Now we are all busy planning for great
weather, great people, great food, and of course all
of YOU to show up and again be a child’s special
“Biker Santa”.
The first year the ALR Post 35 collected less
than 100 toys. I first participated in the 2009 ride
when I just helped at a stop and we had 87 riders
come out. In 2010 the ride grew to 215 riders and
in 2011 it was our best year ever with 330 people
coming out to support this great cause. 1400 toys
and over 5000 dollars were donated with all proceeds going to the Marines Toys for Tots Program.
http://www.toysfortots.org/ Let’s hit 500 this year
people!
As a member of Post 35 and the Riders, I am in
awe of the generosity of the biker community but
not at all surprised.
Anyone wanting more information for the
Nov 24th 2012 ride can contact us by email
to Sue “Brat” Ashe at [email protected] 602-576-7052 or Cristina Sipos-Convery at
[email protected] - 602-315-8945 and be sure to visit
http://www.azalr35.org/ToysforTots2012 for updates and a list of Corporate Sponsors.
And of course we are on Facebook. Search for
“6th Annual American Legion Riders Post 35 Toys
for Tots for Marines” and join the ride!
I hope to see all of you at this year’s ride. Let’s
prove once again that the Grinch cannot steal Christmas if the riding community has anything to say
about it!
With much love and respect, see you all on November 24th at Chester’s H-D and have a wonderful
Thanksgiving!

AZ Burn Center’s Double Header Benefit
In conversation with Harold at Chandler Custom Cycles, we learned of a benefit taking place for
the AZ Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center in
Phoenix. This event was actually a 2-in-1; with the
kick-off taking place on November 6, and the follow
through on November 22.
Sonya Boncore and her husband Carl Boncore
started this event last year; along with her group, the
Devoted Dolls. Their son Gionni was burned on the
stove at grandma’s house in 2009, when he was 1 ½
years old. He was admitted to the burn center with
3rd degree burns from his finger tips to his elbows.
He was there for a little over a week for treatment
and Sonya describes the staff as “above and beyond
amazing in every way.” This event is their way to
say ‘thank you’.
Nicantoni’s Pizza located at 1430 W Warner
Road in Gilbert hosted a special Bike Night on
November 6. 50% of your tab went to the Burn
Unit at the AZ Burn Center. Donations of toys and
children’s books were also collected. These will be
provided to children admitted into the Burn Center
for treatment. Gilbert Fire Dept. & staffers from the
AZ Burn Center were there. There were games for
the kids and raffles. The evening was described as a
“huge success” by Sonya. In addition to the $1300
in cash collected this night, the representative from
AZ Burn Center filled up her Suburban with toys
for the kids. “The Burn Center staff was very, very
grateful for all the toys they received.”
Then on November 22 there was a ride starting
at Nicantoni’s. Bikes & hot rods gathered for a scenic ride which ended at The Road Runner in New
River. This was the first year that the hot rodders had
been invited. An estimated 60 riders went on the run;
plus about 7 rods. The route covered back roads from
Gilbert to New River, with a good portion of highway travel. An additional 10 or so bikes came out to
support the event at the Road Runner.
Entertainment was Rockabilly music, provided
by the Jamie Waldron Trio and the Rhythm Dragons.
They played this event last year as well.
Tony Sousa with Bonehead Pinstripping was onsite pinstriping. Daisy Mountain Fire Dept. was on
hand with personnel & equipment, ready to share information about fire safety. There was a kids section
with a jumpy castle, face painting, & kids tattoo area.
They held a Peoples Choice bike and car contest.
Winners received trophies donated by Thunderbird
Trophies. There were 40+ raffle prizes, plus a separate raffle for the children. Sonya expressed great
appreciation for the donations of the raffle items &
trophies.
From the combined efforts of these two gather-
13
ings, the AZ Burn Center received $2900 plus 10
boxes full of toys, books, and games for the children. Sonya was pleased to note that this was an improvement from last year. All the monies collected
through this event go to the Burn Center at Maricopa Intergrated Health Systems. According to Sonya, this year the money will go toward an inpatient
warming unit. This keeps the body temperature of
severely burned patients at a safe level; to help prevent them from going into shock.
Arizona Burn Center is the ONLY burn center
for all of Arizona; plus also receives patients from
many surrounding states and Northern Mexico. It is
the second largest facility of its kind in North America. For more information about the AZ Burn Center
visit www.azburncenter.org.
Thanks to Vic of Nicantoni’s Pizza and Sonya Boncore for their help in bringing this article
together. The Devoted Dolls are a group of Vintage pin-up girls dedicated to community service. Learn more about them and see lots more
