New chapters
T
he European Rental Association (ERA) did well to choose ‘new opportunities’ as the
theme for its annual convention in Prague at the end of May. At a time when business
conditions remain difficult and recovery awaits 2011, it proved a diverting way to look
at the rental market.
Even so, recession kept on barging in on the discussion, as when Ramirent’s CEO Magnus
Rosén, introducing a workshop on rental potential in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE),
reported that Ramirent’s business there had shrunk by 50% over the past 15 months.
Still, his point that CEE remains a market with enormous rental opportunity was well
received. Indeed, ERA president Gérard Déprez said the choice of Prague as the convention
venue had been quite deliberate, because “despite the present situation, these countries
actually are the only growth area in Europe for the upcoming years.” Our four page report
on the convention and the European Rental Awards starts on page 12.
Also this month we publish our latest IRN-100 list, which reveals that the top 100 companies
reported revenues down 15% last year – and it was a 20% fall for the top 10 companies. In
Europe, meanwhile, the top 50 companies saw average revenue falls of 20%. One notable
feature of the survey this year is the presence for the first time of two South American
rental companies – Solaris and Mills Rental, both from Brazil. The full IRN-100 report starts
on page 21.
Elsewhere, the view that financial institutions will start to run out of patience with highly
indebted rental companies seems to be supported by the recent evidence. Miami-based Neff
Rental had entered ‘prearranged’ Chapter 11, while HUNE in Spain has been taken over by its
major creditor, Banesto bank, and is now in the hands of a restructuring specialist. In each
case the intention is to fully maintain the businesses. Let’s hope they are successful.
For Hewden in the UK it was a new chapter of a different kind, finally being let loose by
Finning, and now with a private equity paymaster. Managing director Kevin Parkes tells IRN
in this issue that he believes the rental company will benefit from its independence.
Finally, for those of you who were thwarted in your attempt to reach Munich for the Bauma
exhibition, we have three pages of news from the show. There will be more in future issues
as well.
Enjoy the magazine, and remember, if your company has done something interesting –
whether it’s a new depot opening or a new product – then let us know.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Brazilian scaffolding, shoring
and equipment rental business
Mills Estruturas e Servicos de
Engenharia (Mills Rental) has raised
R$686 million (€300 million) in a
flotation on the Sao Paolo Stock
Exchange. The company, which is
best known for its scaffolding and
aerial platform rental businesses,
said it would use around 60%
of the proceeds to invest in new
equipment with the remaining 40%
held for acquisitions.
Wacker Neuson’s rental business
grew by 15% last year to
€63 million, a record for the
business and in stark contrast to
the over 30% fall in the
manufacturer’s equipment sales
last year. Andreas Krüger, vice
president sales and service, Wacker
Neuson, told IRN that the increase
in revenues was the result of
growth in the fleet following heavy
investment in 2008. Wacker’s rental
business is mainly in Germany
but it also has rental locations
in Switzerland, the Netherlands,
Germany, Austria, Poland and the
Check Republic.

makes big investment
Liebherr Mietpartner will add as many

part of a refreshing of its fleet.
The significant investment in the
massive 30 t dump trucks underlines
Liebherr’s commitment to its rental

The IRN-100 survey also reveals the

with gross spending on fleet by the
top 100 companies falling 70% to an
estimated €1.68 billion.
The figures from the IRN-100 survey

the European Rental Association’s
annual market study (conducted by
IHS Global Insight) which found that
European non-operated plant rentals
fell by 17.2% to €20.2 billion in 2009.
The ERA study forecasts that

this year, with the exception of Spain
where a 20% drop is forecast.

Mr Schickel, who has led Liebherr

in Germany had performed strongly
in the first two months of 2010; “The
feeling is that it is growing higher - I
hope it will continue.”
He said that around 150-200

Meanwhile, Liebherr is downsizing its
Spanish rental business from a fleet of
350 machines to nearer 300 by the end
of this year. And in Italy it has closed
the rental business and sold the fleet.
Mr Schickel said Liebherr would
continue to invest in its UK rental
operation as well, boosting the 80
machine holding by 25-30 machines
this year. “I can see in three or maybe
four years a machine fleet of 400 units
[in the UK]”, he told IRN.

(part of the Norgestión group) to
restructure the company.
Noraction said it will strengthen
HUNE’s equity by €200 million.
HUNE’s two senior managers, chief
executive Juan Dionis and finance
director Pedro Antón, have left the
company. The business is now being
run by Alejandro Rodríguez-Carmona,
managing director of Noraction,
under the chairmanship of Emilio
Cebamanos, the manager employed
by previous HUNE owner, private
equity firm Advent.
Many of the company’s existing
senior managers, including Pedro
Torres, who manages the aerial
platform division, are still running
the business.
The move by Banesto follows
the decision by Advent in December
last year to sell its 72% stake in HUNE
to the rental company’s management
team for the nominal sum of €1.
HUNE, one of Spain’s largest rental
companies alongside GAM, has been
suffering since Spain’s construction
market entered a deep recession.
The European Rental Association
estimates that the Spanish equipment
rental market fell in value by 35% in
2009 and that it will fall by a further
20% this year.
HUNE reported revenues of
€124 million in 2009, down 40%
compared to 2008.
Hewden will ‘benefit
from independence’
Hewden will benefit from its
separation from the Finning UK Cat
dealership, said Kevin Parkes, the
Finning/Hewden manager who is now
managing director of Hewden under
its new private equity owners.
Mr Parkes, speaking to IRN after
the announcement of the sale to
Sun European Partners, said the
new owners would give Hewden
the freedom and flexibility to make
the “best possible decisions for our
business...We have a supportive
owner who wants to expand the
business.”
The business plan, said Mr Parkes,
is to continue operating Hewden
as a multi-product rental business,
retaining specialist equipment such
as aerial platforms and cranes; “The
business plan is to grow the business
areas that we’ve got, but nothing is
off limits [in terms of expansion].”
Hewden has negotiated a loose
strategic supplier alliance with
Finning UK, although this falls short
of a hard commitment to buy Cat
equipment. Mr Parkes said he hoped
that Hewden and Finning UK would
continue to have close links, and
that Finning had a big part to play
in Hewden’s business since around
a third of its fleet is Cat; “There is a
value in the equipment and we want to
try to strengthen the relationships.”
Mr Parkes made it clear that Hewden
will make purchasing decisions based
on its own best interests, buying Cat
equipment under the “right terms and
the right lead times”.
Hewden’s new owner has a
reputation for restructuring
businesses. However, Mr Parkes said
that Sun understood that Hewden
had already undergone a significant
turnaround in the past 12 months.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Hitachi has launched a three-model range of
compact wheeled loaders, covering the 0.7 m3
to 1.05 m3 bucket classes. The new machines
were unveiled at Bauma due to the popularity
of this type of machine in Germany which,
according to Hitachi, accounts for about 75%
of the European market. The ZW65, ZW75 and
ZW95 are all powered by a 3.3 litre Kubota
engine, rated at 46 kW for the two smaller
modes and 53 kW for the ZW99. Key features
include a 20 km/h travel speed, z-bar front
linkage and a quick coupler as part of the
standard specification.
Skanska Maskin
plans expansion
S
weden’s Skanska Maskin is to
significantly increase its depot
network in the coming two
years to increase the level of support
it provides to Skanska, its parent
company and main customer.
Skanska Maskin’s managing
director, Peter Camnert, told IRN
that the aim was to increase the
company’s rental network from 16 to
25 locations over the next 24 months.
“We have to provide other services
to Skanska, not just rental machines,
and we want to be located in the
areas where Skanska is operating
today”, said Mr Camnert.
Skanska Maskin is strong in
areas such as Stockholm, Malmo
and Gothenburg, but will extend
its network in other regions of
Sweden.
In addition to expanding its
network, Skanska Maskin wants
to increase the proportion of
business it undertakes with external
customers.
Currently around 80% of its
approximate €50 million turnover
is with Skanska, but Mr Camnert
said he would like external business
to be closer to 30 to 40% of total
revenues.

Association (ERA) Convention, held on 26-27 May in Prague.
Murray Pollok reports from the city’s Corinthian Towers Hotel.
Cruising speed
ERA CONVENTION
‘New Opportunities’ was the theme for this year’s European Rental
T
The new European Rental Association (ERA) board was voted in during the Prague Convention. New members are Arne Bugge
(Norwegian Rental Association), Marzia Giusto (Nacanco) and Vesa Koivula (Cramo). The new board, from left, is: Gérard Déprez
(Loxam), Peter Schrader (MVS Zeppelin), Vesa Koivula (Cramo), Marzia Giusto (Nacanco), Kevin Appleton (Lavendon Group), Colin
Wood, (Construction Plant-hire Association) and Arne Bugge (Norwegian Rental Association). Current president Gérard Déprez, who
is chief executive officer of Loxam, remains in place and will serve a second term as president. Previous board members who have
left were Erkki Norvio (Ramirent board member) and Franco de Michelis (Assodimi).
New services model
New ways of organising major rental contracts
are pushing rental companies to offer additional
services to customers, said Kristin Hancock,
managing director of Speedy Engineering Services
(SES), a division of UK rental company Speedy,
speaking at one of the ERA workshops.
Mr Hancock told a packed conference room that
additional services such as testing and inspection,
asset management and the provision of fully
serviced temporary offices was one
impact of the move for clients to get
“more value” from their biggest rental
supplier contracts.
Hand in hand with this is a shift to a
new structure for major rental contracts.
The traditional model - with large and
small rental companies working for a
number of major and sub-contractors –
changed when major contractors started
to negotiate large rental contracts with
big rental companies who then managed
the smaller rental companies on behalf
of the contractor and sub-contractors.
That ‘integrated supply chain’
method of managing rental contracts
was now evolving to a further level,
mework’
said Mr Hancock, with new ‘client framework’
contracts where the ultimate client (such as a
utility company) procures rental services directly,
by-passing the major contractor.
Mr Hancock said these types of contracts –
which are only now being procured - give a rental
company “customer intimacy. You become more
intimate if you provide more services, which
leads to longer relationships, which leads to
transparency of earnings.”
Although emerging first in the utilities sector, Mr
Hancock said it was a model that he expected to
see in other sectors, and also eventually outside
the UK.
Kristin Hancock, Speedy
he forward-looking theme of ‘new
opportunities’, had been chosen for this
year’s ERA Convention with the aim, perhaps,
of taking delegates minds away from the difficult
conditions they face back in their offices.
And, as ERA president Gérard Déprez pointed
out, opportunities can mean many things: new
markets, different approaches to existing markets,
and the opportunities that follow from business
reorganisation.
Rental managers had no alternative but to “keep
going”, said Mr Déprez; “For everyone, the crisis has
been so severe and lengthy that we fail to see a way
out. It seems we face nothing but problems....[but]
we must not be blinded by the crisis. And managers
cannot spend their time tending to problems. This
is why this Convention motto ‘new opportunities
for rental’ encourages us also to focus on the
opportunities we may find”.
More than 250 delegates attended the convention
– including rental managers from Poland, Czech
Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and
Turkey – and Mr Déprez said this was evidence that
the organisation had reached its “cruising speed...
Your attendance encourages committees’ members
to outdo themselves and motivates our secretarial
staff.”
The choice of Prague as the venue was significant,
said Mr Déprez; “we wanted to underline the strong
development undergone by the rental industry
in Central Europe in the last decade. Despite the
present situation, these countries actually are the
only growth area in Europe for the upcoming years.”
On these two pages we report on a number of the
seminars and presentations.

Learning
from crisis
www.haulotte.com
The following is an edited
extract from Gérard
Déprez’s speech at the ERA
Convention.
e can say that 2009 truly was an annus horribilis for our trade. Never did our industry
experience such a severe activity drop, for some countries down 40%. No one was spared. We
are all refugees who suffered more or less from the storm.
Those who suffered less should consider themselves lucky.
As a reaction to the crisis, our industry showed consistent and responsible behaviour. Almost everyone
stopped opening new branches and all cut growth investment. Many closed down branches and reduced
staff. Companies clearly expressed their will to release free cash-flow to cut debt and thereby reduce the risk
of insolvency. And, in addition to these measures, some deliberately reduced their fleet to boost utilisation
rates.
But did rental operators have any choice when their costs are 70 to 80% fixed costs and as activity
decreases by 30%? Of course, we may worry about losing market share, but at the end of the game
competitive positions remain unchanged.
The adjustment to market conditions also triggered an unprecedented price drop. This only worsened
rental companies’ financial situation. The temptation to blame one’s competitors is high, but I saw an overall
price decrease everywhere, no matter who the competitors were.
What lessons do we learn from this crisis?
1. Rental operators can experience a crisis due to entirely external factors: economic crisis, competition,
financial or a banking sector crisis. We must keep in mind that rental companies can be seriously shaken
whatever their own performance.
2. Network expansion also has its limits. Diversification is no longer an asset when the crisis hits all
sectors simultaneously.
3. The third lesson addresses the importance of cash in our highly indebted companies. Cash can no longer
be underestimated because the actions of the financial sector can be both sudden and unforeseeable.
4. Finally, despite the fact that our business operates over long cycles, we also have to learn how to deal
with very short-term cycles. I fear that our industry, which is accustomed to long phases of growth, will
have to address a greater volatility of its activity and profits.
At last year’s Convention in Manchester I predicted that 2010 would be worse than 2009, as recession would
peak in spring 2010, and that recovery would be visible in our 2011 accounts. This is now confirmed by Global
Insight in its forecasts for the next two years.
However, the Greek crisis stressed the risk of States’ insolvency or, more accurately, the risk of increased
refinancing rates. Obviously, governments will be under pressure to postpone infrastructure projects that
were supposed to boost economic recovery. This is very bad news for our trade.
As for me, I do not believe in an actual recovery but more of a lengthy end to the crisis because of the
banking sector’s difficulties and European countries’ debt.
Finally, if we do not expect recovery, we still remain confident on an end to the crisis next year.

Eastern promise
Ramirent CEO Magnus Rosén said Eastern and
Europe remained a market with enormous rental
potential, even if the financial crisis had seen
Ramirent’s business in the region fall by 50% over
the past 15 months.
“These markets are still quite underdeveloped”,
he said, “There are large infrastructure projects
planned, so there will be large opportunities.” Mr
Rosén said the key to success in the region was
having a good depot network; “otherwise it will be
difficult.”
Mr Rosén highlighted Poland as a particularly
attractive market, although the drawback had
been that “everyone realised in 2009 that Poland
was heaven. We saw a lot of equipment moved into
Poland – that hit prices.”
He described Russia as the region’s most
challenging market; “and also the market where we
Magnus Rosén
have the most possibilities, all of us.” The market
is dominated by Moscow and St Petersburg “and is
very undeveloped – the penetration could increase
tremendously. It would be good if more rental
companies entered Russia.”
John Monaghan, managing director of Polish
company Atut Rental, acknowledged that investment
in motorways, railways, stadiums, airports and
bridges made Poland an obvious target for rental,
but he warned that pricing was under pressure and
there were difficulties in getting paid (“like pulling
teeth”).
“Poland is an attractive market”, said Mr
Monaghan, “but there are great cautions. My advice
is, first of all, don’t, but if you do, the timing is
crucial. You have to pay very close attention to what
customers actually want – there’s no point offering a
bikini if they need a coat.”

ERA Convention
& IRE Show 2011
ERA’s 2011 convention will take place during
the second International Rental Exhibition (IRE)
in Amsterdam on 7-9 June. As with the 2008
event, the IRN/ERA rental awards will again be
an expanded version, with double the number of
award categories.
The exhibition is being organised by
Netherlands exhibitions company IPI in official
cooperation with ERA and IRN magazine.
ERA president Gérard Déprez said in Prague that
the show was perfectly timed for the recovery;
“With a doubled exhibition area, IRE will be the
largest European rental equipment show in 2011.
No one can miss this opportunity. Make the most
of the recovery and save the date now.”

■ Figures denoted (Est) have been estimated
by IRN. The figures denoted (1) are taken,

15% last year, and the reduction was closer to 20% for
the largest companies. Murray Pollok reports in the
IRN-100 survey for the year 2009.
The
lowdown
N
obody needs statistical proof to know that
2009 was a year to endure for the rental
business worldwide, certainly not the 11000
employees we estimate have lost their jobs from
IRN-100 companies since the start of last year. The
top 100 are employing 7.5% fewer people on average
than a year ago and that rises to 10% for the top 20.
Still, if it’s statistical proof that you are after,
then this year’s IRN-100 provides it. As a group,
the top 100 companies saw total rental revenues
fall by 15%, although average declines at the top 10

companies were even higher at 20.3%. Similarly, the
top 50 European companies saw revenues fall by
20%. (These percentage changes are ‘like-for-like’,
having been corrected for currency fluctuations.)
The greater fall among the larger rental
companies in North America and Europe this year
was reflected in last year’s survey as well, when the
top 10 reported a 6.5% reduction in 2008 revenues
compared to a 3% revenue increase for the top 100
as a whole. When markets fall, it is often the larger
renters who bear the brunt.

Top of the list remains United Rentals, although in
terms of rental revenues Aggreko is not far behind.
However, include United Rentals’ other revenues,
for sales of equipment for example, and its lead
strengthens.
In a year in which there was almost no merger
and acquisition activity many of the names at the
top are the same as in previous years, although
Aggreko’s rise to number two place illustrates its
ability to grow even as its North American and
European markets come under pressure.
Top 50 Europeans
The top 50 European companies reported revenues
of €8.8 billion – down 20% – with Loxam still well
out in front, almost €200 million ahead of its
nearest rival Ramirent. There are larger Europeanbased companies than Loxam, such as Aggreko
and Ashtead, but these firms generate the majority
of their revenues outside Europe. This 20% fall
compares pretty well with the 17.2% reduction for
Europe reported by the ERA in its recently published
IHS Global Insight rental market study.
Companies reporting rental revenue falls of more
than 25% last year included Hertz, United Rentals,
Speedy Hire, RSC, HUNE and Ramirent. (Spain’s other
big renter, GAM, fell by 24%). Japan’s bigger rental
companies also saw revenue falls, but generally
in the 10-15% range. By our reckoning, only 14 of
this year’s top 100 companies actually saw revenue
growth last year.
Who was growing? Well, top of the league was

sale means that Finning drops out of the top 100 –
its remaining rental businesses in Canada, Bolivia,
Uruguay and Chile together accounted for €47
million in revenues last year, which is just below the
€49 million drop off point.
Other new entrants are Mills and Solaris, both
of which are benefitting from Brazil’s continued
growth. Godwin Pumps comes in for the first time
with revenues of between €70 and €105 million
at its US rental business – it should certainly have
featured in the list in previous years – and Touax
is in the list by virtue of its steadily growing
temporary accommodation business.
Another new entrant is ELA Container, the German
company that rents portable accommodation

CapEx trends
Capital expenditure is another prime indicator
of business sentiment. It is no surprise that, in a
year of cash generation and cuts to non-essential
spending, gross capital expenditure on equipment
fell by a dramatic 70%. The top 25 spenders
in 2009 invested around €1.29 billion in 2009
compared to €4.3 billion in 2008, and the top 100
as a whole invested around €1.68 billion, down
from €5.5 billion in the previous year.
Those that were spending either have enormous
fleets that need some degree of refreshment
whatever the business conditions (such as United
Rentals, Speedy, Nishio Rent All) or companies that
specialise in very large equipment, where even
modest investment in unit terms translates into
big money (Sarens for cranes and Emeco for large
earthmoving equipment).
Aggreko and MCC Plant Hire (South Africa) –
numbers two and four in the top spending list,
respectively – are probably among the very few
companies in the top 100 who were investing for
growth last year.
The ERA/IRN RentalTracker survey undertaken
at the end of the first quarter of 2010 did not
suggest that spending will increase significantly
in 2010, with most renters waiting to see definite
improvements in demand before splashing
out again.
M&A activity
Last year was also notable for having almost no
merger and acquisition activity. Hewden’s sale by
Finning – although something of a ‘one-off’ case
– is one of the first signs of a return to activity,
as is the recent stock market flotation by Mills in

Why are the diamonds distributed like this?
Work in reinforced concrete and you’ll see why.
The optimal, three-dimensional distribution of the diamonds is the hallmark of
Diagrip™, our unique technology for diamond tools. This distribution ensures that
you utilise the full capacity of every diamond, as the diamonds are exposed and
used at an even rate. The result: long-lasting tools with superior performance for
rapid, convenient sawing, drilling and cutting – especially when working in highly
reinforced concrete. Studies show that for such applications, Diagrip™ tools are
about 20 % more efficient than traditional tools.
We offer a wide range of Diagrip™ tools
for all types of jobs in the construction industry.
You’ll find the entire range on our website.

Brazil. More depressingly, Neff Rental’s recent
entry into Chapter 11 protection in the US – even if
‘prearranged’ – may well be the first of several such
restructurings that we see.
So the IRN-100 list for 2009 spells out in rather
clinical detail the impact of the recession on
the rental market. 2010 is likely to be a year of
consolidation, with renters hoping to get back to
profitability and readying themselves for a return
to growth. Let’s hope it comes sooner rather than
IRN
later.

BAUMA REPORT
The closure of European
airports at the start of
Bauma week had a definite
impact on visitor numbers,
but that didn’t stop it from
being a mega show.
Visitors down but
still a giant
Fuel-efficient JCB backhoe
MVS Zeppelin’s
Bauma beer
garden.
T
he Icelandic volcanic ash cloud can be
blamed for the 17% reduction in visitor
numbers for April’s Bauma exhibition, with
415000 attending compared to the half a million
in 2008.
The difficulties in reaching Munich were most
apparent on the first few days of last week,
with numbers picking up as the week wore on allowing some visitors to reach the show by long
land journeys. For example, executives from Mills
Rental in Brazil managed to reach the show via
Spain, Italy and then trains and taxis to Munich.
About 50 of the 3150 exhibitors, mainly those
from Asia and America, were also unable to get to
the show. The figure of 415000 is still more than
double the number of people that go to any other
construction exhibition anywhere in the world
Major suppliers generally expressed satisfaction
with the event, even if international visitor
numbers were down. Liebherr, who’s custom-built
13500 m2 stand was one of the most spectacular
at the show (see photo top right), said its
expectations “were more than satisfied” and
reported concluding sales deals valued at €200
million during the show. Werner Schwind, head of
sales and marketing at Wacker Neuson, said Bauma
“really went well” for the company.
Peter Schrader, managing director of rental
company MVS Zeppelin, exhibiting as part of the
Zeppelin group at Bauma, said the show had gone
extremely well, with the company hosting as many
as 2000 guests every day at a specially designed
beer garden in the back of its stand.
JCB unveiled its new generation of backhoe loaders,
featuring new styling and impressive fuel savings.
According to Tim Burnhope, JCB’s group managing
director for product development and commercial
operations, “This is our most fuel-efficient backhoe
loader ever.”
The key innovation is under the bonnet, where
a third hydraulic pump has been added for more
efficient digging. This ‘ECO DIG’ innovation means
excavation can be carried out at lower engine revs,
cutting fuel consumption by up to 15%. In addition,
ECO ROAD and ECO LOAD innovations means overall
fuel consumption is lowered by 16%.
In terms of styling, the front of the machine
features a sloping hood and grill, improving
visibility and minimising the chance of damage
from collisions. The cab interior has also been
restyled, with more ergonomic controls, clearer
instrumentation, automotive style steering wheel
and pedals, and more durable finishes.
Aichi finds niche in Munich
Japanese aerial platform manufacturer Aichi
may have delayed the development of its ‘global’
product line – customers will have to wait a bit
longer for its rough terrain scissors and articulated
booms – but it decided to make its Bauma stand
interesting by showing some ‘niche’ products that
have long been available in Japan.
Most obvious here was the Skymaster WZ09ASM
(pictured left), a 800 kg cage capacity self-propelled
boom that has the ability to work in the vertical or
horizontal plane using a single control.
“The WZ09 is a proven machine in Japan”, says
Ken Nezuka, Aichi Corp executive officer and
president of Aichi USA, “Customers like the vertical
and horizontal controls, and it is good for tunneling
work.”
The heavy carrying capacity allows workers to
have tools and small compressors in the platform
while they work. It’s a big machine – it weighs
around 6.8 t and it measures 2.2 m (W) by 2.8 m (H)
by 3.8 m (L).
It is also expensive; “I’m afraid to give the price!”
said a laughing Mr Nezuka.
Also on the stand was a tiny vertical mast
machines, the tracked, 3.8 m platform height
RM04B, another machine in production in Japan
for over a decade. This weighs 636 kg and has a
platform capacity of 200 kg.

Merlo’s hybrids
The Tracked Panoramic 25.5, another prototype on the Merlo stand.
Italian manufacturer Merlo had three ‘specials’ on
its stand. First was a prototype telehandler using
a hybrid power source, second was a compact
telehandler mounted on a crawler chassis (also a
prototype), and the last one was a telescopic aerial
platform mounted on the road-going chassis from
one of its concrete mixing trucks.
The hybrid unit takes a standard Merlo Turbofarmer
P 41.7 with a 103 kW engine and fits a new hybrid
power unit comprising a 55 kW Kubota engine and
a 49 kWhp motor/generator fed by a Lithium Ion
battery pack.
The handler can be used in three modes: using
diesel power only; in hybrid mode, powered by
battery and with the idling engine powering up if
needed; and in all-electric mode, with the batteries
regenerated during breaking. The batteries sit under
the cab and the fuel tank has been shifted to the
forward left hand side of the machine.
A spokesman for Merlo says applications could
include tunnelling, for quiet working in city centres

and in glass houses. It is described as a “very serious
concept”, but don’t expect a production model this
year.
Also new is a tracked version of Merlo’s P 25.6
compact telehandler launched last year. Powered by
a 73 kW engine rather than the 67 kW unit on the
conventional model, the Tracked Panoramic 25.5
uses 0.45 m wide tracks that Merlo says will allow
it to travel over even the roughest terrain to its
working position.
Finally, showed one of its new MPR truck mounted
aerial platforms. These 15 m and 18 m working height
telescopic boom models are the latest examples of
Merlo’s ‘rapid transit’ models, able to travel on road
at speeds of up to 25 mph. The operator can travel at
creep speeds with the boom raised and at speeds of
up to 4 mph when stowed.

The new E10SR mini excavator from New Holland was given its
official launch in Munich. Improvement over the previous model
– which is the smallest in New Holland’s range – include more
compact dimensions and improved serviceability. Overhang has
been reduced to zero on the right swing and just 38mm on the left
swing, down from 39mm and 82mm respectively in the previous
model. Adjustable crawler widths enables the E10SR to pass
through openings as narrow as 900 mm when set at the minimum
width setting of 750mm. The unit offers 1.75 m digging depth,
3.3 m digging reach and 3.16 m digging height.

Copco highlights 35-45%
compressor price increase
Atlas Copco Portable Air has used Bauma to highlight
the implications of engine emission regulations on
portable compressors and to unveil a prototype Tier
4A/Stage III B compliant XRHS 366 compressor.
The tighter emission regulations for engines
Terex/Manitou
cross sell deal
Terex AWP and Manitou have signed a cross selling
agreement under which Manitou will market two
Genie rough terrain scissors under its own brand
while Terex AWP will sell two vertical mast Manitou
machines.
Terex AWP will manufacture 7.92 m and 9.75 m
self-propelled rough terrain diesel scissor lifts - its
GS268RT and GS3268RT modes - for sale by Manitou
as the 100 SC and 120 SC. Manitou will manufacture
5.70 m and 7.90 m self-propelled vertical masts for
sale by Terex AWP as the GR-20J and GR-26J.
The agreement will initially operate in Europe but
with the intention of widening it to North America
and other areas by 2011.
Tim Ford, president of Terex AWP, said; “These
vertical mast products are complementary to our
range and give us the opportunity to go to market
quickly and offer our customers an additional, high
quality, product offering.”
Jean-Christophe Giroux, (pictured left)
Manitou chief executive officer, told
IRN that the cross-selling agreement
was illustrative of Manitou’s increased
openness to alliances and joint ventures
with other manufacturers, and that there
was a possibility of further cooperation
with Terex. He said that while consolidation in the
manufacturing sector was widely anticipated as
a result of the economic crisis, it might be more
attractive to pursue such alliances.
He added that Gehl in the US – which is owned by
Manitou - was still losing money but that it would
“again be a US$500 million company. The question
is when.”
between 130 and 560 kW come into force from
January 2011 and Atlas Copco said the technology
required would add between 35 and 45% to the cost
of its affected products.
John Hort, vice president marketing at Atlas Copco
Airpower, told IRN that the new regulations would
have an enormous impact on rental buyers; “We
really want to get this on the agenda of our biggest
customers. It’s a big change for them.”
Atlas Copco Portable Air said it had chosen
Caterpillar’s EGR/DPF solution to meet the limits
having evaluated both it and the Selective Catalytic
Reduction (SCR) method. This technology will mean
that customers do not need to refill with diesel
exhaust fluid (DEF) or AdBlue. Atlas Copco showed
an XRHS 366 compressor with a new CAT C9.3 ACERT
engine at Bauma.
In addition to the pricing impact, the new emission
regulations will make it more difficult for rental
companies to move compressors between regions
because the new units will need to use high quality
diesel fuels that are not available in all markets.
The changes will also have an impact on the
use compressor market, since the regulations will
not affect existing units in the field. Some rental
companies will be tempted to extend the lives of
their existing units and there is likely to be a rise
in demand for used equipment. Mr Hort said “our
buy-back programmes will become more important.”

Chicago Pneumatic targets rental
with “value brand”
New engines
solve problem
Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power has developed
a four model range of Vanguard 5.5 hp to 10.0 hp
engines featuring an automatic fuel cut-off system
that will prevent the common problem of fuel
spilling during transport and contaminating the
engine oil.
The TransportGuard system automatically
shuts off the fuel when the engine is turned off,
preventing a very common problem - particularly
in rental - where customers neglect to shut off the
fuel before moving the machine.
Paul Bramhall, senior category manager
with Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power, said
customer research with major rental companies
had revealed that the full two-step engine shut-off
procedure is not properly followed in up to 72% of
rentals. This can lead to oil dilution and consequent
engine wear.
Mr Bramhall said the new engines were now
undergoing testing with some large rental
companies, including Speedy in the UK, where
Briggs & Stratton has retrofitted the new engines
to some of Speedy’s equipment.
“Our work in the field helped define the design
criteria for these new Vanguard engines”, said Mr
Bramhall, “By listening to customers and working
with some of the world’s leading OEMs, we have
developed an engine series that will raise the
standard of dependability in the toughest job site
situations.”
Mr Bramhall said Briggs & Stratton would be
targeting equipment manufacturers as well as
rental companies directly, where ‘re-powering’ of
existing equipment will be possible.
The two smaller models in the range, the 5.5 and
6.5 hp units, are available now, and the larger 8
and 10 hp models will be released in September this
year.
Kishore Sidhwani (pictured right), the recently
appointed executive leading the development of the
Chicago Pneumatic (CP) business for Atlas Copco,
said the company’s “value segment” equipment
would be particularly attractive to small and medium
sized rental companies.
CP is selling a range of compressors, generators,
concreting equipment, light compaction and hand
held tools, some of which are modified Atlas Copco
models.
Mr Sidhwani, who became vice president of CP
earlier this year having previously working for Atlas
Copco in India, said the CP equipment would not be
full-feature or full specification models, but simple

Atlas Copco] by the way we do business - through

distribution. And we will focus on doing business via
the web.”
He said; “There will be rental companies who
would be very much interested in what the CP brand
stands for - solid, reliable equipment that is easy to
maintain. Products that work.”
Chicago Pneumatic as a brand is best known in
North America, and Mr Sidhwani said his priority
would be to expand the business there and also in
Europe, South America and India, before focusing
on other areas such as the Middle East and South
East Asia.
Another priority will be to expand the network
of dedicated CP distributors. “We’re going in
with a good full range of equipment”, said Mr
Sidhwani, “Yes, we have plans to increase portable
compressors and generators, but we have a very

Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment has
agreed an alliance with Italian telehandler
manufacturer Dieci to offer four Dieci-produced high
capacity telehandlers under the Doosan brand.
Doosan will have the rights to sell the handlers in
Europe and the Middle East initially, but there is a
possibility that this will be extended further in the
future. The range - which will be available from the
end of this year - offers maximum lift heights of 10 m
and lifting capacities from 7 to 21 t, larger than any
of the Bobcat branded handlers produced in Europe.
The 16 t capacity DT160 (pictured) was shown on the
Doosan stand at Bauma.
Jae Jong Jin, vice president heavy product
management and parts at Doosan in Europe, told IRN
that the cooperation with Dieci allowed Doosan to
quickly enter a niche handler market without having
to invest in research and development. Mr Jin said
he anticipated sales of around 40 units a year for
the handlers.
The decision to brand the telehandlers as Doosan
products rather than Bobcat, which is a wellknown telehandler name, was made in accordance
with Doosan’s strategy to reserve the Bobcat
name for compact equipment and Doosan for
heavy machines.
good offering to start.”
Also part of the CP business is Tremix, the
former Dynapac business for concreting and light
compaction equipment. Tremix is best known in
northern Europe and Mr Sidhwani said the brand
would be retained; “We intend to keep that brand
and the specialisation that they have in concrete.”
Cummins Power Generation showcases its latest range of
compact generators at Bauma. On its stand it was the 22 kVA
C22D5 compact generator set powered by the Cummins X2.5
engine. The set is part of a wider range which includes the
X 1.3 powered sets available in 8 -11 kVA configurations, the
X 2.5 powered sets in 17 – 28 kVA and the X 3.3 model rated
30 to 38 kVA (all ratings for 50 Hz). Steve Juden, Cummins
executive product manager, said, “Exceptional power delivery
coupled with reduced running costs ensures the new compact
range meets the specific requirements of the construction
industry. We believe this new line with its unique features and
benefits, will take leadership in this market segment.”

Perkins, Cummins, John Deere, Deutz and
JCB power plants, said general manager Luc
Heylands. The unit has been designed for the
rental market and is the largest ever produced
by the company, with a 250 kVA continuous
power rating and 275 kVA standby rating.
Dimensions are 3.6 m (L) by 1.23 m (W) by
2.53 m (H). Key features including a 1.23 m width
that means that five can be loaded on a 9 m
trailer - an important consideration for rental
companies; sound proofing to 93 dbA; and a
24 hr capacity fuel tank (1260 litres).

IRN reports on new
compaction products
launched at the recent
Bauma exhibition in
Germany.
Weber MT has redesigned its CF 2 and CF 3 forward vibratory
plates (pictured below), with the new models featuring an antivibration handle, faster travel speeds and more force (from 12
to 15 kN on the CF 2 and 18 to 20 kN on the CF 3). Weber says
that a new base-plate design improves the plates’ ability to travel
on asphalt, and removing the water tank has been made easier.
Also new from the company are the SRV660 and SRV620 vibratory
rammers/tampers (pictured above) – replacing the former SRV66
and SRV62 models – which come with a new triple air filter system
to protect the engine.
Ammann unveiled its heavyweight Rammax 2500 trench roller.
Replacing the company’s RW2000 and RW2900 models, the
2.5 t machine has a working width of up to 1.2 m, an amplitude of
1.7 mm and a compaction frequency of 41 Hz.
The new SD115D/F and SD130D/DX/F (pictured) single drum
soil compactors launched at Bauma by Volvo Construction
Equipment incorporate a “smart power” system that optimises
the engine and hydraulics output as well as the cooling fan
speed to match the application requirements. Volvo says this
results in “more accurate compaction and means the engine
runs at a lower speed – significantly reducing noise, mechanical
wear, emissions and fuel consumption.” The SD115D weighs
11490 kg and is powered by a 97 kW four cylinder turbocharged
diesel engine, while the SD130D weighs 12815 kg and has an
engine output of 119 kW.
JCB Vibromax’s new 700 kg class VMD70 walk-behind roller (pictured) has a drum width of 650 mm and replaced both the previous VMD62
and VMD80 models. Its larger brother is the new 900 kg VMD100, a 750 mm wide roller model that replaces the VMD120. JCB says the
changes put the rollers “right at the heart of the most popular weight and drum width categories for the majority of markets, and is in
direct response to customer feedback on the previous range.” Both machines have an increased travel speed of up to 6.24 km/h and a
redistribution of weight – water tank now at the rear and engine at the front - has seen an improvement in gradeability, up from 35% to
40%. Also new from JCB is the heavy-duty VMT860 (pictured), replacing the VMT850. It weighs 8750 kg with standard ROPS protection
and 9250 kg with the optional full ROPS/FOPS cabin.
Hamm’s new GRW 280 rubber tyred roller features ballast spaces
between the wheels enabling it to operate at weights from
between 10 to 28 tonnes. With a maximum compaction width of
2 m, the GRW 280 also features a new cab design with a single
operator’s seat and console, which can be moved and pivoted
across the full width of the cab.

Masterpac’s new light compaction products include the 720 kg
Duplex roller DVR65 (left) and the PCR8010, an 800 kg reversible
plate compactor, both shown at Bauma. The DVR65
– which Masterpac says has a robust, trouble-free
design – can be fitted with either a 7.5 kW Hatz
1B40 or 8.1 kW Lombardini 15LDE440 engine, and it is fitted with a
65 litre water tank. “Our presence at the Bauma show in April has
allowed us to establish good contacts with a view to expand our
European distribution network”, says Nathalie Nguyen, head of
Masterpac International, the company’s new European sales office
based in France, “We are currently in negotiations with partners in
several European countries, and we are optimistic regarding the
setting up of our European network by the end of 2010.”
Bomag showed its field tested hybrid BW 174 AP AM tandem
roller at the show. The 10 tonne class roller is equipped with an
electric motor and high capacity battery, which is charged when
braking and reversing or during vibration shutdown. Test results
show fuel savings of up to +30%.

Dynapac has added a compaction indicator as an option on its
forward and reversible plates. The lighting system uses a red,
yellow and green lighting system to indicate when compaction
is 30% complete, 60-80% complete and 80-100%. The aim of
the system is to ensure that users do not over-compact and
crush material, and it will also reduce wear on the machine
and fuel consumption. The indicator is initially being offered on
the LG400 model but will be available also on the LG300 and
LG500 plates.
Bobcat has introduced a new range of vibratory rollers that can be
used as attachments on its skid-steer loaders, compact tracked
loaders, all-wheel steer loaders and telehandlers. Replacing
the 122 and 183 cm wide models, the new range comprises five
different versions with widths from 122 to 203 cm. All but the
largest 203 cm unit are available in padded and smooth drum
versions. (The 203 cm version is offered only as a smooth drum
model and is a new addition to the range to match the larger
carriers now offered by Bobcat.) In addition, a smooth shell kit is
available for the padded versions of the 122 and 175 cm models,
giving customers the option of having two attachments in one.

tool carriers/skid steers? The answer depends on the
application, the customer, and the budget. Murray Pollok reports.
Wheels or tracks?
T
SKID STEERS
Which is best for rental companies – wheeled or tracked
racked loaders are considerably more costly
than conventional skid steers, but that hasn’t
put off rental companies from investing in
them.
One example is Outiloc 33, a small French rental
company that started business in early 2009. Based
in the village of Le Barp near Bordeaux, it runs
a Bobcat T110 compact tracked loader that is very
much in demand on housing developments and
individual homes being built in the area.
The company reports that landscapers in particular
like the machine because it is very easy to transport
and ideal for working in narrow and hard to access
areas. The low ground pressure offered by the tracks
(0.32 kg/cm2) means that it does not damage roads
or pavements.
Bobcat reports that Outiloc is not the only French
rental company opting to buy the tracked models:
Colbert has bought three T110s and Kiloutou has
added seven T190 rubber tracked models
and three T250 steel tracked machines for grading
applications (utilising the high pushing power). In the
UK, MTS Group is one rental company that has both
tracked and wheeled skid steers from Bobcat in its
fleet.
As Bobcat explains it; “Compared to wheeled
skid-steer loaders, compact tracked loaders offer
a number of features that have attracted rental
companies around Europe. For work in soft/muddy
ground conditions, a tracked loader has a much
lower ground pressure, better stability, more
tractive effort and more pushing force.”
It is the application that is ultimately the key
factor, says JCB; “Historically, wheeled machines
have always been the preferred machines for
rental. Compact Tracked Loaders cost significantly
Photo of the JCB Robot 190 skid steer loader. All eight of its
wheeled and tracked ‘monoboom’ machines offer three control
patterns: JCB Servo, Hand/Foot, and Dual hand controls. JCB
will soon start to build monoboom skid steers for Volvo under a
recently signed agreement between the two manufacturers.
Bobcat has introduced its MT55 mini tracked loader in Europe.
With an overall width with bucket of just 903 mm, length of
3113 mm (with bucket and standing platform) and height of
1246 mm, the MT55 is described as being “ideal for digging,
loading and clean-up applications (both indoors and out),
particularly on construction, demolition and landscaping
sites.” Power comes from a 17.5 kW Kubota D902-E3B diesel
engine. Rated operating capacity is 251 kg and it has a
pushing force of 9386 N.
more, and the rubber tracks and undercarriage
system are higher maintenance than wheeled units.
“Ultimately, the applications dictate the need of
wheeled versus tracked units. Rental companies
must charge higher rental rates on track loaders to
be able to obtain a comparable return on investment
of wheeled units.”
What application?
This issue of application is also linked to the types
of customer that a rental company has. Kelly Moore,
Gehl’s product manager for skid steers, compact
tracked loaders and compact wheeled loaders,
says rental companies need to “closely review their
customer base and usage [to determine] whether
wheeled or tracked compact loaders would best be
rented.
“Skid steer loaders naturally have their highest

wear item being in tyres, while on track loaders it
will be the rubber tracks. Tyres are considerably less
costly as compared to track replacement, so these
key factors need to be weighed heavily in decisions
on what type of machine to invest for rental fleets.
“As general rule, skid loaders are probably able
to be utilized in 80-90% of applications where
mud and soft conditions wouldn’t prevail, whereas
track loaders can be better used in those type of
conditions.” Ms Moore makes the further point
that using tracks on surfaces that will damage the
crawlers is a real drawback, since maintenance and
replacement costs will be steep.
Italian manufacturer Messersi makes some of the
same points; “We have to say there is not an absolute
answer: it depends on the job you have to do”, and
highlights the stability of the tracked loaders as
being an advantage. It also echoes Kelly Moore’s
Toro says its TX platform offers users the flexibility of switching
between ride-on and walk-behind configurations. Pictured is the

point about the economic life of the crawlers.
Caterpillar says that skid steer loaders are going
to be the number one choice for rental companies
as they offer the most economical solution to
most application needs. “SSLs are very often the
utility machine on site, equipped with a bucket
and broom for moving materials and cleaning up”,
says Cat, “However many companies are realising
the hydraulic potential of these machines and the
additional revenue that more specialist work tools
can bring. A typical example of this is a skid steer
equipped with a cold planer and pick up broom.”
The US manufacturer also offers two options of
tracked machines - the steel idler, rubber covered
steel track system (its CTL models), and the rubber
covered idlers full rubber track system (multi terrain
loader (MTL)). Cat says the MTL machines are “very
suitable for landscaping applications where damage
to fragile surfaces must be kept to a minimum”, while
the CTL units “have a wider application spread and
are suitable for general construction applications
where soft conditions are being found.”
The same wheel or track choice is available at the
smaller end of the market with the compact tool
carriers offered by companies including Vermeer,
Ditch Witch, Toro, Boxer and Kanga (owned by Digga).
Popular tracks
Greg Lawrence, marketing product manager for
Toro, says tracked units tend to be more popular for
compact utility loaders because the tracks distribute
the weight of the machine more evenly, leaving less
of a footprint, which means the operator can work
in a wider range of ground conditions.” He says the
Kanga sells more tracked models than wheeled to its rental
customers in Europe because of the flexibility they offer.

a range of wheeled and track loaders and says its products offer
“preferential price, acceptable quality and ‘in time’ service”.
choice ultimately comes down to personal choice
“since both models have their own advantages.”
Mr Lawrence points out that there are other
important considerations. “Does your customer base
have an engine preference?”, he asks, “European
rental companies tend to prefer diesel engine units,
while companies in the US preference my vary
depending on their customer base. Professional
contractors operating larger equipment will tend
to prefer diesel because the majority of their fleet
will likely have diesel engines. However, contractors
that are operating mowers likely prefer gas engines
because the majority of their fleet is comprised of
gas units. Homeowners in the US prefer gas because
of availability.”
The choice between walk-behind and ride-on is
another important one on these smaller units. “With
most manufacturers, you are forced to choose either
a dedicated walk-behind or a dedicated stand-on”,
says Mr Lawrence, “but Toro doesn’t make rental
companies choose. Toro offers the TX platform,
which gives operators the option of switching
between having a ride-on and a walk-behind.”
He argues that in the rental industry, having a walkbehind machine is important for novice operators
not familiar with operating equipment; “The ability
to ‘walk-away’ from the machine by not riding on is
important and makes inexperienced and newer users
more comfortable. However, if a contractor is using
the unit all day and covering a lot of ground, a rideon unit may best fit their needs.”
Ground conditions are the key determinant thinks
Jon Kuyers, utility products segment manager at
Vermeer; “In regions where the ground is sandy or
where flotation is needed (soft soils) the track unit
would be the machine of choice...The customer will
LiuGong has introduced a new skid steer
model, the 365A, which it says is “easy to
own and easy to operate.” The 365A is a
line expansion of LiuGong’s three year
old 375 model and avoids using “add-on

be more productive and more apt to rent again
which in turn will provide higher utilisation for the
rental store owner. A wheeled unit is best suited for
rental on hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt.”
Competitive advantage
Kanga Loaders UK believes it has a competitive
advantage in offering its compact loaders with a ‘track
over tyre’ design. Stuart Coar, national sales manager
at Kanga Loaders UK, says; “Not only do Kanga
offer the largest range of stand on mini skid steer
loaders in class, but our tracked machines feature
an ingenious and unique ‘track over tyre’ design,
whereby the unit’s tracks locate over conventional
air filled tyres. This innovation provides smoother,
more efficient, more forgiving performance, for a
comparatively negligible price differential.”
In fact, Kanga sells more tracked models than
wheeled to its rental customers in Europe because
of the flexibility they offer; “This we believe to be
a fundamentally important consideration given the
seasonal variances in climate and ground conditions
throughout Europe, and accounts for why the
majority of our sales to European rental companies
are of our tracked units.”
Of course, each manufacturer believes its own
machines offer particular benefits. For example,
JCB points to its single Monoboom, side entry
design, which is definitely the major differentiator
for its range of wheeled and tracked models; “The
operator does not have to enter and exit through
the front of the machine, over large, cumbersome,
or wet and muddy attachments”, says the company,
“This…design also provides industry leading near
360 degree visibility. This improved visibility allows
the operator to be more productive, improving
productivity and job site safety.” The recently
announced alliance between JCB and Volvo will see
Volvo selling JCB-built monoboom models.
Kelly Moore at Gehl – which offers both tracked
and wheeled skid steers – says it is the sheer range
of products available is a major benefit; “There are
many models to suit most any application, from a
subcompact, 24 hp, less than 3 m wide unit, to the
popular 612 and 748 kg mid-size loaders, to the huge
99 hp, 1.8 t capacity unit.”
The company also offers a number of control
options. “A key operating feature is the use of
Gehl ‘T-Bar’ drive controls that intuitively allow any
operator the ease of driving the machine with one’s
left hand, while the lift and tilt functions are done
with the right hand. The only foot pedals used are
for powering auxiliary hydraulics and also featuring
a standard equipment foot throttle.” Hand/foot style
controls are also available at no extra cost.
Caterpillar says that it recognises that “machines

going out from rental companies are not likely to
be operated by experienced drivers. Therefore
considerable design time was allocated to the cab
and controls to make them intuitive, logical and easy
for the unskilled operator to learn.”
In terms of serviceability, Cat has “grouped all
the daily service points inside the rear door of the
machine for easy access, recognising that if they are
Terex Construction has updated its smaller tracked compact
loader, the PT-30, pictured here in pre-production format at the
Rental Show earlier this year. Improvements include a stronger
boom arm (with thicker arms at the end) that boosts maximum
lift height by over 20% to 2.56 m, and an increased bucket
roll-back which reduces the risk of losing the load and also
protects the tilt cylinder. There are larger bearings and seals on
the tracks, and stiffer torsion axles, meaning that the machine
has less of a tendency to sag under load. The undercarriage is
now the same as that used on the larger PT-50/60/70 models.

easily accessed daily service check are more likely
to get done.”
Also offering both wheeled and tracked models is
Vermeer, which also highlights simplified controls
that “provide a quick learning curve for novice
operators; safe, comfortable operating platforms
which minimize operator fatigue; and provide
excellent visibility to the work area.”
Stuart Coar at Kanga says the design principle of
the ride-on, multi-tasking mini loader “permits many
tasks historically performed by single disciplined
machines or hand labour alone, to be completed in
less time, more safely and with consummate ease. An
undoubted key to the success of the mini loader is its
multi-tasking abilities, which offers the potential of
all year round hire, unlike many single disciplined
machines which often have a degree of seasonality
and thereby limited return on investment.”
Greg Lawrence at Toro makes the same point about
the versatility of the compact loader, and says this
is particularly relevant now and says the reason
that “many rental stores have added compact
utility loaders to their equipment fleet is the cost of
having a yard full of dedicated pieces of equipment —
especially in today’s economic conditions.
“Rental stores are replacing application-specific
equipment that is not regularly rented with a compact
utility loader and attachments. This combination
eliminates the waste of owning equipment that isn’t
maximizing their return-on-investment.”
Meanwhile, Italy’s Messersi sums up the strengths
of its loaders as follows: “Good compromise
between price and quality, fast maintenance, easy
guidance (axial pumps, joysticks and hydraulic
motors transmission without chain) and really good
performance (big engines with hydraulic fan).”
Other options
Of course there are many more suppliers to
choose from, including Case, New Holland, Terex
Construction (which acquired the ASV tracked loader
line a few years back), Komatsu, Hyundai, Wacker
Neuson, Mustang and Italy’s IHIMER.
In addition to these machines, Chinese suppliers
are becoming more active on international markets,
with both Sunward and LiuGong offering skid steers.
LiuGong, for example, offers five skid steer models –
including the recently launched 365A model – while
Sunward’s range includes five wheeled and three
tracked models.
In the end, the question over whether to opt for
tracked or wheeled simply leads to other questions
over the application and the type of customer. In

The European Rental Association (ERA) has published a follow-up
report to the 2008 European rental market Study by IHS Global
Insight. ERA looks at some of the key findings.
2009 Market Report
T
he European Rental Association (ERA)
announces the publication of The European
Equipment Rental Industry 2009 Report with
the most comprehensive data available on the
European rental industry.
The report has been produced by ERA in
cooperation with consultant IHS Global Insight. The
European Equipment Rental Industry 2009 Report is
the second report on the equipment rental industry
at a European level. It contains a country-by-country
analysis of 11 European countries, and includes
market size information and key ratios including
fleet size and investment as well as penetration
T report also contains forecasts for
rates. The

The report, commissioned by ERA, is available to
ERA members for €300 and to prospective and
non-members for €900 (excluding VAT).
An executive summary of the findings can
be downloaded from the ERA’s website:
www.erarental.org/news An order form for
the report can also be downloaded at the
same website or you can order the report
from KHL Group’s Information Store:

■ IIn 2009, the total size of the European
equ
equipment
rental market (without
ope
operators)
was €20.2 billion. The 11
cou
countries
covered in the study represent
€1 billion.
€18.5
■ The total turnover decreased 17.2%
fr 2008 to 2009 as an average in
from
E
Europe
and is expected to decrease
b
between
0% and -5% from country to
c
country
in 2010 with the exception of
S
Spain,
where the drop is expected to be
hig
higher.
ho
■ In 2011, however,
the same turnover is expected
f
to increase from
2010 to 2011 between 0% and 10%
from country to country.
■ In 2009, fleet investment has been reduced
drastically in some countries with up to 80% to
90% decrease from 2008 levels. In some countries
capital expenditure was less affected with
reductions of 20% to 25%.
■ Fleet sizes have been evaluated for the first
time in this 2009 report. They have been reduced
from 14% to 17% in some countries while in other
countries they remain almost constant.
■ Overcapacity and reduced rental demand have
put pressure on rental prices and time utilisation
rates in 2009. These pressures will persist
throughout most of 2010.
■ Construction industry penetration in Europe
peaked in 2008, fell in 2009 and will continue to
decline over the year 2010. It is expected that
the recovery of rental turnover in 2011 will not
be strong enough to outperform growth in the
construction sector as a whole. Thus, industry
penetration will be, at best, stable in 2011.
■ Merger and acquisitions activity almost stopped
in 2009 but it is expected to start over again in
late 2010 and 2011 when the consolidation of the
equipment rental markets will gain speed.
■ Companies active in rental have been identified
in two classes, rental companies as a primary
business without operators (NACE code 71.32), and
other companies providing rental services.
■ Rental companies as a primary business with
operators (NACE code 45.50), which were included
in the 2008 report, have been deleted from this
2009 report, waiting for more definitions and
methodology.
The 2009 Report contains over 60 pages of
statistical information with expanded details
per country. Each country contains four pages of
detailed information in local currency in order to
better measure the trends, independently from the
variation of the currency exchange rate against the
Euro.

■ Gehl Company has
appointed Daniel L
Miller (pictured) to
succeed Malcolm ‘Mac’
Moore as president
of Gehl effective on 1
April, 2010. Gehl is the
US compact equipment
manufacturer owned
by French group
Manitou.
Mr Miller joined Gehl as director
of manufacturing operations in
October 2001 and was appointed
vice president, manufacturing
operations in December 2005. Before
joining Gehl he held a number of
senior management positions in
manufacturing and distribution
at Woods Equipment Company, a
manufacturer of agricultural, turf and
construction equipment.
Gehl has also
promoted Serge
Bosché to the
position
of
vice president
sales
and
marketing. In
his new role, Mr
Bosché will have
responsibility
for all sales and
promotional activities in the Americas
region for Gehl and Manitou.
Mr Bosché, a 25 year Manitou
veteran, joined Gehl in February 2009
following its acquisition by Manitou.
He will continue to serve as the
president and chief executive officer
of Manitou North America.
■ Craig Paylor (pictured
Below) is to retire as
president of JLG Industries
on 1 July and will be replaced
by Wilson Jones, the current
president of Oshkosh Corp’s
Fire & Emergency business,
which includes the Pierce
branded fire fighting
platforms.
Mr Paylor, who has had a 32
year career with JLG, has been an
executive vice
president of
Oshkosh and
president of
the Access
Equipment
segment since
2007. He also
served as
president of
JLG Industries before its acquisition
by Oshkosh in 2006.
The news of Mr Paylor’s departure
took the access industry by surprise,
even if it had been anticipated that
Oshkosh was at some point likely to
appoint its own candidate.
Since making the announcement
on 24 May Mr Paylor has been calling
some of JLG’s largest customers to
explain the change.
European rental executives
attending the European Rental
Association’s annual convention
in Prague on 26-27 May expressed
regret at his departure and there was
also some surprise at the timing of
the move, taking place at the bottom
of the current business cycle.
Kevin Bright,
Selwood:
1958 - 2010
It is with regret that we report the
death of Kevin Bright, chairman of
Selwood, the UK pump manufacturer
and rental company. Mr Bright, aged
51, passed away after a long battle
with cancer.
Mr Bright was the longest serving director in the company’s history. He
joined Selwood in 1976 from colleague as a trainee accountant and was
appointed group finance director in September 1986. He became group
managing director in April 1988 and held this role until November 2007 when
he took on the position of chairman.
Selwood said; “Initially diagnosed with Bowel Cancer in 2005, the courage
and determination with which Kevin fought this disease has been an
inspiration to all who knew him.
“A man with an astute mind and demanding standards, Kevin will be sadly
missed by all his colleagues and friends throughout the industry, and all our
thoughts and condolences are with his family at this time of great sorrow.”

Romanian rental
association formed
The Romanian Rental Association (RRA) was
formed on 27 April in Bucharest with 11 founding
members, who are a mix of access, crane and
lifting rental companies.
The president of the new association is Stefan
Ponea, chief executive officer of Industrial
Access SA Romania, who told IRN that he had
been working on the idea of a rental association
since 2006, but the momentum grew during
the crisis of the last 18 months when rental
companies could see the benefits.
“Now the market conditions helped me convince the majority of the
Romanian players to contribute to this association, towards the development
of a healthy and sustainable Romanian equipment rental market,” said
Mr Ponea.
The founding members are: Arons Lift SRL, CDP Access SRL, Dornseiff
Nacele SRL, Energoutilaj SA, Felbermayr Romania SRL, Industrial Access SA,
Liftec Utilaje de Ridicat SRL, Prangl Romania SRL, Rolift SRL, Starlift Romania
SRL (part of Mediaco France) and T&T Access Solutions SRL.
■ Godwin Pumps has appointment
Mick Trotter (left) and Paul Marlow
(right) in sales and rental distribution
development posts. Mr Trotter has
almost 18 years of experience in the
pump sales and rental industry and
he will provide support to Godwin’s
distributors in the Southeast of
England, the Netherlands, and
Belgium. He will also seek to expand
sales and rentals in those same
territories.
Mr Marlow, who has seven years of
pump sales and rental experience,
will support Godwin’s relationship
with SLD in the Central Region of
England and help develop business
opportunities in Spain and Portugal.

& Co, the German
truck mounted

manufacturer.
Mr Kulawik, a
26 year veteran
at competitor WUMAG before taking
on the job as head of Ruthmann’s
Service division in July last year,
takes over from joint managing
directors Heinrich Winkelmann and
Heinz-Jürgen Buss.
Mr Winkelmann and Mr Buss remain
as majority owners of Ruthmann,
but are moving to take charge of
operations at Winkelmann Group
following the death in early May of Mr
Winkelmann’s father, who had been
running the company.
