What do YOU want from Founders’ Day?

The month of May is one of our most
active, with plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy
your Porsche and your fellow Porsche enthusiasts. Be
sure to participate in at least one if not more events
this month!
Now I am really going to shift gears on you: I am
going to talk about Founders’ Day. Last year I heard
some members were asking “What is Founders’ Day?”
Basically, it has been several things through the years.
Some clubs have monthly membership meetings; the
Maverick Region does not. Some clubs have an annual
meeting. Founders’ Day is the closest thing we have
to an annual meeting. One important function that
occurs during Founders’ Day is the election of officers.
Our bylaws require it. However, if that was all we did, it
would not be much of a meeting.
As I said previously, it has been many things.
Previously, awards for our Autocross and Time Trial
series were given out during Founders’ Day. That
activity was changed to a different occasion. One thing
that does happen during Founders’ Day is a silent
auction to raise funds for our charitable endeavors.
We choose this event to support our charity, which has
proven to be a fun activity and helps the cause. In the
eight years that I have been a member, there have been
a variety of speakers and it has been “black tie optional.”
While some may not like that criteria, in reality very
few exercise that option. The event has been a sit-down
dinner with a cash bar, although none of this is set in
stone.
The reason I am bringing up Founders’ Day is that
attendance has been declining over the years. We
have begun re-evaluating the event. We want to know
what you want the event to be. In what way would
you like to celebrate the anniversary of the founding
of the Maverick Region? Please send any suggestions

certainly want to hear from you.
Another thing we want to hear from you about is
what activity you would like to help make successful.

April Board Meeting

began promptly at 7:00 pm.
Social Co-Chair Phyllis Gallegos
mentioned a date for Founders’
Day. Unfortunately, it conflicted
with our Club Race in November,
so another date will be worked out.
May at Mayo’s is all set with Blue
Mesa catering. She needs more RSVPs, though.
Volunteer Chair Jimmy Gallegos
sent out a form for event chairs to
complete and return to him. He will
pair up job needs with willing volunteers.
Editor Jim Hirsch continues to
create 40-page issues. Current printing of 1825 covers our needs. In the
past five months we have had over
100 new members join the club, so
he will continue publishing articles
recapping what our events are about.
We have 31 advertisers. The Photos
of the Month feature is going well
and is always looking for pictures for
articles and on the cover. He will be
gone in May, so Carey Spreen will
finish the June issue.
Co-Editor Carey Spreen reminded everyone that the Phase II of registration for the Porsche Parade in
Jay Peak, Vermont, opened Monday,
April 4.
Goodie Store Chair Chris Flaugh
has had requests for a Maverick
window sticker. He found a source
for $1.29 each (500 minimum). The
board approved a motion to purchase them. He will have them available for sale, but cannot do so on
the Goodie Store website directly.
He will investigate the best method
for selling and report later. He will
also purchase several moderately
priced items from our Goodie Store
to make them available for sale.
Safety Chair Joe McGlohen
has been training Bob Kramer
and Wayne Elliot as assistants. His
current focus is on our Drivers’
Education events. He will continue
looking for an additional younger
candidate.

Advertising Chair Cindy Bliss is
still getting a feel for her new position and will work with Jim Hirsch.
Sunday Drive Chair Tom Martin
reported his first event of the year
was to the Mitas Hill Vineyard,
which was attended by 111 cars and
183 people, the largest ever. His new
sound system worked perfectly. Because the group was so large, he had
six drive leaders to split the group
up into manageable chunks. The
next drives will be to Ben Wheeler,
TX, and the Revolver Brewing in
Granbury.
Bob Kramer looks forward to getting more involved in the club while
not stepping on too many toes. He
noticed some issues at the last DE
and will help to make improvements.
PR Chair Brenda Dranow continues to work on issues to help with
Slipstream, despite being away.
DE Chair Chris Tabor reported
the April 2-3 DE had over 100 attendees. The DEs this year to date
have been more successful than last
year’s to this point of the year, partly
due to better date selections. He
will be looking to increase the price
of the September event by $25 to
adjust for increasing costs. He has
been reaching out to new members
by sending event discount coupons.
Bill Orr is assisting Tom Martin
with Sunday Drives. He shared a
new phone app called “Porsche GTS
Routes” that records routes and
makes them available to publish, a
possible great tool for the events.
Concours Chair Andy Kay is set
for May at Mayo’s on April 30. He
has his awards and other items prepared, but needs several volunteers
to help with parking and vote tallying. He is also working to get volunteer judges for the June 5 Autos in
the Park concours. If he cannot get
enough judges, it will be a people’s
choice event.
Calendar Boy Brendan Eagan has
the Google calendar up to date and
April 6, 2016
is looking for a replacement helper,
as his last one moved away.
Rally Chair Don Sebert has his
first event on April 16, a Puzzle Rally
from Plano to the San Martiño Winery in Rockwall. He is taking RSVPs
to [email protected].
Secretary Wendy Shoffit reported
for several absentee chairs. Membership Chair John Hamilton stated
we had a net gain of 12 from last
month, bringing us to a total of 2529
primary and associate members.
Autocross Chair Mark Schnoerr
said that, after three events so far,
19 Mavericks have participated in
the series, but no one has swept the
new classes. The AX school was held
March 19 in Mineral Wells, followed
the next day by a mirrorcross. The
third event was at Lone Star Park
where he was course designer and
event master – a great event with
some close battles in the Porsche
classes. The next event is May 29,
the day after the first Time Trial this
year, both in Mineral Wells. Time
Trial Chair Travis Howard is ready
for that event and will be running
TT Course #1. More information
later. Historian Charlie Davis will
begin working on dates for the next
Photo School and contest. He will
report on those later, as details are
decided. Lastly, as Club Race registrar, Wendy reported that the COTA
event is shaping up. Attendance is
currently down from past years, but
will work to increase those numbers.
Jim Falgout announced that Ash
Seidl-Staley is the Maverick of the
Month because of his continuing
tech article writing for Slipstream,
despite a very busy school and life
schedule. If you have suggestions

Jim.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:45
pm, as our fearless accountant leader had to return to work because of
tax season. Possibly the shortest
meeting ever!

One of the most
beautiful aspects of the
Porsche, as a car, is its low profile. Whether one drives
the classic 911, a nimble 914, a scathingly fast Carrera
GT, or one of the various front engine Porsches, the
truncated stance screams power and agility. It is undeniably accurate to state that this look is gorgeous and
advantageous for high speed cornering, but having the
car so close to the ground can often make upkeep of
the vehicle difficult. Many maintenance procedures can
be accomplished without having to raise the vehicle up
into the air, but many more cannot. To avoid unnecessary damage to our precious vehicles, it is important
to know where the car’s jack points are and how to
properly use them. For the purposes of instruction this
article will focus its attention on how to lift both front
and rear engine-mounted Porsches, specifically a 911
and a 944—though these procedures and jack points
can be carried over to newer models and body shapes.
Let’s begin with a nice diagram depicting a 911’s
jack points. As you can see, there are six main points
underneath the car that should
be used to jack up the vehicle.
Two of them sit directly behind
the front wheels of either side
of the vehicle and the four other
points lie directly in front of the
rear wheel wells. On most vehicles, when rust is not an issue
or the structural integrity of the
rocker panels isn’t threatened,
this section of the floor pan has
little nodes that stick out signaling the exact position a jack
should be placed. If the front of
the vehicle needs to be lifted the
best places to lift, include directly
in the center of the Crossbeam or
at the A-Arm mounting points.

on the bottom of the engine. I have read and seen multiple discussions pertaining to this procedure and have
determined that using the engine for a jacking point
is really up to each individual owner. As long as care
is taken throughout the lifting procedure your car will
be free of damage. Remember, patience and common
sense are our friends.
No matter what position you wish to raise your vehicle by, it is important to always use an item, usually

a small chunk of wood, as a buffer in between the jack
plate and the metal of the vehicle. This not only provides an added measure of stability but helps protect
your vehicle’s metal if a slide or jack slip were to occur.
A procedure that is doubly important is always, and I
repeat always, utilize jack stands in conjunction with
the floor jack itself. Too much can go wrong when using the floor jack alone; jack stands provide additional
support and save lives. Thankfully Porsche has courteously provided many points where jack stands can be
inserted. These include: the rear torsion bar covers,
the front torsion bar mounting points, the front cross
beam connecting the A-arms, and the rear torsion tube
itself.

away from the vehicle. Allow the weight of the car to
settle on the stands for a few minutes. Then administer
a test on the vehicle by pushing and shoving the car.
There is no need to get angry like the Hulk, but it is
important that you do this to make sure that the car
will not slip or fall off of the stands while you are under the vehicle. It is better to have the car fall off the
stands when you push on it then it would be to have the
car shift while torqueing a bolt or breaking free one of
those trailing arms. For added security, as my family has
experienced the detrimental effects of a jack failure
first hand, I always place two extra tires underneath the
floor pan. This only eases my mind, as well as my wife’s,
but is not strictly necessary.
To lower the car after your work is done, replace
the floor jack to the point where you chose to lift the
car. Lift up, carefully remove jack stands and any other
form of safety measure present, then slowly lower the
vehicle down to its iconic stance.
That’s about it my friends! Remember, the Internet
is full of beneficial “how to” videos, discussion boards,
and technical articles that adequately describe how to
jack up each specific Porsche model. It wouldn’t hurt
to invest in a Haynes manual either . . . Wrench on,
Mavs!

day of Spring, just hours after the
vernal equinox. The neo-Druids
were spent from their time at
Stonehenge, the Australian Grand
Prix was already in the books, and
somewhere in North Texas, a bevy
of the Porsche faithful gathered in
a parking lot in Plano.
Actually, it was more than a bevy
of Porsches. More than a cadre, a
covey, a crowd, or a flock, too. In
fact, it was more of a horde. Maybe
even a legion. It was the biggest
dang turnout of Porsches and people that the Club has ever seen for
a Maverick Tour.
All told, six drive groups were required
to accommodate all of the participants

Maverick Region’s second Driver Education (DE) event of 2016, held at MotorSport Ranch
on April 2 and 3, was a very successful one for us. The
Green (beginner) and Blue (novice) groups were full,
and the Yellow (intermediate/experienced) and White
(experienced) groups were mostly full. Several drivers
advanced to higher run groups, and two advanced students became new driving coaches – quite a feat!

weekend of May 6-8, held in conjunction with a PCA
Club Race, and put on by Lone Star and Hill Country

After that is our summer hiatus, with the next event
coming up on September 24-25. DE-ers are already
looking forward to September to kick off the Fall portion of this popular series.
Driving your Porsche (or other car) on a real racetrack is educational and exhilarating, and of course just
plain fun. As a beginner, you always have an instructor
in the car with you to help you learn about your car, the
course, the rules, and racetrack etiquette. Safety is our
highest priority, but fun and camaraderie rank right up
there too!
Your Porsche, right off the showroom floor, is a competent racetrack vehicle – all you need is some track
time, along with the basic skills and proper attitude,
which is where the instructor comes into play. He or
she will help you understand that the correct application of steering and brakes, as well as the throttle, are
what make you both fast and safe on a racetrack. If you
are worried about wear and tear on your car, tires and
brake pads are the typically the only items that wear out
more quickly than normal street driving.

Maverick Region AX Series:

With three events into the ten-event season,
we have 19 Maverick PCA members in the series, and
no one is sweeping any of the new 2016 PCA classes.
Equipe Rapide’s annual Autocross School was held
March 19 at Mineral Wells, where entrants were able to
work with experienced coaches on a figure-8 skid pad,
a low- and high-speed slalom, a fast switchback section,
and a full autocross course. Breakthrough car control
skills were experienced by all participants and seat time
was a priority.

a dual course MirrorCross on March 20.

GT3 versus 650S: You’re the Winner

About a year ago, I
received an invite to the McLaren
Sports Series Reveal Event, hosted
by Park Place McLaren and the
McLaren factory. A new car, the
570S, was to debut as the marque’s
entry level model. Factory reps
were there to present the cars and
answer questions along with dealer
personnel. The pre-production
model on display was stunning,
a true beauty, but as it was not a
complete car, it could not be fully
experienced. Heck, we couldn’t
even sit in it.
Luckily, they said I was welcome
to try out its “big brother,” the 650S,
instead. The nicest of individuals,
I’ll call him Chris, took me out on
a test drive that highlighted some
of the car’s more performanceoriented attributes. I think at one
point, one of us might have even
exceeded the speed limit. To say
the least, the car is a hoot on the
street.
The McLaren 570S
I happened to mention how I
had become a track junkie with my
Porsches over the last couple years,
and that it sure would be nice to
get a ride in one of the McLarens
on the track. As luck would have
it, he said the dealership was hosting a private customer track day at
MotorSport Ranch in Cresson the
following week. Further, he might
be able to get me a drive in one
then . . . and would I be available
on Wednesday? Hmmmm . . . OK!

The
following
Wednesday
turned out to be one of those
bluebird days you dream about,
especially while living in Texas. The
sun was out, and yet the temperature and humidity were both pleasant. What a perfect day to test the
merits of the 650S, and see how it
would stack up against my current
track car, a 2015 Porsche 991 GT3.
Admittedly, this would be a tall order for the McLaren as I happen to
love the way my “3” works on the
track.

I got two sessions driving the
650S that day. As it turned out, that
was just enough to plant the seed. I
bought one six months later.
So, which one do I like better
-- GT3 or 650S? I love them both.
How are they different? My observations of the differences include
the following:
Power: 80% of the 650S’s rather
substantial torque is available at
2800rpm. Four hundred lb-ft at
2800 rpm pulling to 500, vs the
GT3’s maximum of 324 lb-ft developed at around 6200rpm. The only
thing I’ve experienced that’s similar was my CBR900RR race bike.
You definitely feel the difference.
Sound: The way the GT3 bangs
and howls downshifting through
the gears coming hard into a corner (like Rattlesnake at MSR),
screaming through the GMG, is
intoxicating. The 650S sounds best
under acceleration with the back
window down. And it’s good, but
never quite gets to the GT3’s 9000
rpm note.
Ride: I’m sure a good chunk of
the extra $$$ charged for a 650S is
because of the suspension. As far
as I’m concerned, it’s worth it. The
ride is unbelievable. It’s better on
the road than my ‘16 Macan T with
AS, to say nothing of the GT3. Even
in track mode, on the track, the
ride is surprisingly smooth and flat,
even under braking and cornering.
That’s some kinda technology.
Handling: I’m a bit more comfortable near my limits in the GT3.
Some of that may be due to the fact
I’ve tracked it a lot more. Some of
it is likely due to the difference in
tires (Pirelli P Zero Corsa A vs Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2). Some of
it is because the GT3 is more adjustable.
Expendables cost: The McLaren
goes through tires at least twice as
fast as the GT3 does. It also appears
to have a serious appetite for rear
brake rotors because of its brake
steer / open diff technology. By the
way, a set is about $8000. Don’t ask
me how I know.
Driver data: The GT3 displays
readable numeric data (oil pressure, oil temp, water temp, tire
pressure). The 650S displays tire
pressures and tire temperatures,
but there’s no way I can read them
while the car is moving. Further,
engine data is shown in the form of
four-stage bar graphs. While they’ve
never moved off “normal” when in
use, I wonder what the actual range
has been . . . and just how bad abnormal would be . . . and how close
I’ve been to it.
View: Visibility out of the 650S is
excellent. While the GT3 rear view
mirror shows me a great view of the
wing, I can actually see other cars
out the back of the McLaren. The
view out the front is much better
also. The lower deck height along
with the raised fenders makes it much easier to place
the 650S exactly where you want it. That’s quite handy
on the track.
Braking: Both have exceptional brakes. I can, however, brake slightly later, even
though I’m going slightly
faster, in the Mclaren. Did I
happen to mention the cost
of the McLaren’s rotors?
Fun factor: I can’t imagine two better cars to have at the same time, given their
price points. One could argue an RS and a 675LT
would be a better pair but others might argue the $$$
difference would be better spent on a Billet Silver Metallic Viper ACR. Just thinking out loud . . .

Finding a Road Less Traveled
My husband has been an avid motorcyclist
for 20+ years and his primary requirement in trying to
find the perfect ride was to figure out the most crooked
path to the destination. Since we purchased “Greta,”
our 2008 Boxster, a little over two years ago, the same
rule has applied. Because we live east of the Dallas Metroplex, most of our travels have been north of Hwy
380 and east of I-35.
One of our rides had the
target of destination of Bug
Tussle, Texas. We’d read that
it was quite the photo stop, so
we decided to see for ourselves.
Google Maps is our friend when
finding locations. I simply type
in the location, avoiding highways, toll roads, etc., to keep us
away from the traffic, and then
I alter the course and move the
lines around until the route is
as curvy as possible. These maps
are before and after playing
with the route to Bug Tussle.

eateries,
always
in search of the
perfect piece of
pie. One such café
that deserves a
recommendation
is Sabine’s on the
Square in Trenton.

On our most recent excursion, we drove to Durant,
Oklahoma for a concert and a little bit of gaming action. We decided on a straight shot to get to the desti18 May

nation but took the leisurely route home. In doing so,
we found a beautiful bridge that spans the Red River
between Oklahoma and Texas, and the countryside
is gorgeous with endless rolling hills. We stopped for
a few pictures and then drove through Bonham State
park as well. Our advice is to always make the detour
for state parks. The usual entry fee is $4.00 per person
but in this case, they will let you drive the scenic loop
for 15 minutes as a courtesy. It’s a quaint little park that
we will consider going back to for a picnic lunch. Here

friendly. Most of all though, our goal is just to enjoy the
experience of the drive.

Beer Run !
Do you remember the malt shops of your youth?
Yeah…… neither do I. Well, our May Saturday Drive
leads us Mavericks to a malt and hop shop, courtesy of
Revolver Brewing in Granbury.
Come escape the confines of the urban sprawl and
explore with us some of the less traveled backroads of
the western sector of the Metroplex. The route is 101
miles in length, so we should arrive at our destination
just in time for a refreshing afternoon libation.
Every Saturday, Revolver Brewing opens its property
to the general public to partake of their most excellent
wares, and also those of a food truck or two. Admission
is $10.00, and
includes a logo

tasting, live music, and a tour
given by one
of their genius
brewers.
Some picnic tables and chairs are available, but it
is recommended that Mavericks bring their own lawn
chairs.
The Drive will be held on Saturday, May 14th. Starting point is the parking lot of WalMart Supercenter,
located at 6360 Lake Worth Boulevard in Lake Worth.
Starting time is 10:00 am, so plan to get there a little
early to sign up and attend the Drivers’ Briefing.
Of course, attendees are not required to participate
in any of the destination’s offerings, so if one desires,
one may head straight home after the Drive on their
own route.
If you plan on attending the Drive, it is imperative
that you RSVP before the Drive. Just shoot an e-mail
to [email protected] with a simple “I will be attending
(by myself, with my wife, with a friend, etc.)” and you’re
in. When you RSVP, it gives us an accurate count to
supply to the proprietor of the destination, plus three
days before the Drive, you will receive an e-mail with
the following attachments: a Garmin .gdb file of the
route, a route overview, and turn-by-turn instructions.

Around the Bend...

The Joy of Porsche. I have not been able to
find a tome with that title, although there is a legion of
books under the heading of “The Joy of ...”.
No, I’m not about to begin writing the Porschespecific entry into that genre. Instead, I’m going to
encourage our Maverick Region members to write your
personal chapter of The Joy of Porsche and be willing to
share your experiences with our readers.
For example, I happened to be out at the
April 12 Track Night
in America and had
a chance to see firsthand how one of our
members experienced
The Joy of Porsche. Mike
had not been out
to the track with his
Mike Barnett and his 2007
Porsche Carrera at MSR
Porsche 911 for almost
three years. After four
sessions that evening, the Joy for Mike in getting back
on the track was readily apparent.
And, as many of you know, your Porsche also experiences its own version of Joy after a bit of vigorous exercise. All of its many computer-adaptive systems come to
full attention when you ask your Porsche to stretch its
legs as it was originally engineered to do. Its Joy is that
all systems stay at close to full attention for some time
after you complete your track time. The response as
you drive it on the street for the next few days brings an
even greater amount of Joy to you!
This issue is filled with many other examples
of The Joy of Porsche. For example, Melissa Nichols shares her family’s driving strategies when
looking for some Joyful time on the road.

Bob Kramer shares the Joy of comparing the driving
experience of wonderful cars that many of us only get
to dream of driving. Ongoing contributor Ash SeidlStaley provides Joyful strategies for suspending your
Porsche in the air safely.
And, new for this issue, member David Cavazos
shares his Joy of sketching Porsche-based cartoons.
David is titling his series as “Pcar -Tunes”. I hope this
becomes a regular feature of Slipstream.
