Filling the skills
gap to build a
successful career
After completing her undergraduate degree,
Fay Zhao obtained her first full-time job
in a field unrelated to her studies. She
recognized the gap between her existing
skills and knowledge, and what she would
need in order to be successful in her new
career. Hoping to build her knowledge and
obtain an industry-recognized certification
without giving up her job, Fay completed
Conestoga’s Global Business Management
graduate certificate program though parttime studies.
6
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Fay
about her journey with Conestoga and how it has
helped expand her knowledge and build her career.

6
Flexible schedule options and smaller
classes were definitely the biggest
strengths. The learning atmosphere is
different in small-class environments
where students are encouraged to reflect
on their own study and work experience. In
addition to gaining real-world perspective
from highly qualified faculty members
who have extensive work experience in
the subjects they teach, I was also able
to learn from my classmates who work
in the same field. Their insights included
new ideas and more effective ways of
approaching and completing tasks.
My initial perception of online learning
was that I would have to do everything
on my own. After finishing two online
courses at Conestoga, my perception
changed. Instructors were very accessible
and they responded to questions very
quickly. The online portal helped me stay
connected. Group assignments and case
studies provided opportunities to connect
with fellow classmates who share similar
interests or work in the same field. Online
classes are a convenient alternative
when there are time constraints or other
commitments. They offer flexibility and
require no travel time.
It was relatively easy for me. Learning has
always been an important part of my dayto-day life. When I consider something
important, I will find time for it.
What would you describe as
some of the strengths you found
in your program?
2
What was your reason for
registering in this program?
I wanted to acquire applicable knowledge
that I can use immediately at work.
Continuing education is also a great
way to further develop core business
competencies.
3
Did you complete your courses
through in-class or online study?
I have taken both in-class and online courses,
and I found both delivery options great.
What was your initial perception
of online learning? Did it change
after your experience?
5
What positive outcomes have
come from continuing your
education?
Through continuing my education,
I expanded my knowledge and was able
to apply my new learning to work. Most
importantly, I experienced a feeling of
personal fulfillment every time
I successfully completed a course.
How were you able to fit the
course-work into your day-today life?
7
If you could share advice with
others considering Conestoga’s
programs and courses, what
would it be?
There is always something new and
something interesting to learn. Continuing
Education is not only for job-related needs
or skills development; it is also a great
way to learn about subjects of personal
interest. Conestoga offers a wide range
of programs and courses and a variety of
learning options. You are sure to find a
program or course that fits your needs.
8
Do you plan on furthering your
development by enrolling in
other part-time courses with
Conestoga?
Definitely! Learning something new is
always fun and rewarding, and it keeps
me motivated.
Conestoga College wishes to thank Fay for sharing her experience.

Lean Six Sigma #1294
Program Credential: Certificate
A key success factor for organizations considering a continuous improvement or
sustainability program is to start by having their employees trained and equipped in the
disciplines of lean and six sigma. The basis of all continuous improvement is the elimination
of wasteful practices; those practices that not only reduce a firm’s competitiveness but also
contribute directly to green house gases and carbon footprint. Through the Lean Six Sigma
program, participants will develop knowledge and skill through both in-class and applied
projects in their own organizations. This program will provide a roadmap for graduates to
continuously improve and enhance their organizations’ competitiveness in today’s global
economy through the identification and elimination of wasteful practices, resulting in
greater financial and environmental sustainability. Further, program graduates will be able
to clearly map out their organization’s value stream in order to improve those processes
which provide value to customers. Effective leadership and team building, essential to
any successful lean six sigma implementation, will also be explored. The Lean Six Sigma
certificate program is facilitated by faculty with many years of direct experience in business
and industry.

Intercultural Relations #1192
Program Credential: Certificate
Globalization brings the world closer together; however, discrimination and other forms
of intolerance continue to cause problems. In our increasingly multicultural society these
issues can lead to exclusion and inequality, often along racial and ethnic lines. This program
is a response to learning needs identified by a broad range of representatives from human
services and justice agencies who recognize that racial inequity and negative stereotyping
are significant social problems. Learners will examine diversity issues in a social context,
explore critical differences in cross-cultural communication and identify the sources, causes,

This program is offered in partnership with the Centre for Family Literacy (Edmonton AB),
and Conestoga College. Referred to the many ways families develop and use literacy skills

Professional Bicycle Mechanic (MECH1230)
This eleven-day, hands-on course is for current
and aspiring mechanics seeking to gain practical
knowledge and experience with all major bicycle
components, including frames, bearings, wheels, drive
trains, brakes and shifting systems, on a variety of
bicycle styles and vintages.
Professional Wheel Building (MECH1400)
Adapted from Winterborne’s Professional Bicycle
Mechanic course, students will build three wheels
(choice of Road, Mountain Bike or Track Wheel). The
first wheel is considered a practice where students
will build the proper skill foundation of wheel lacing,
tensioning, and balancing techniques. The following
two wheels, a front and a rear, will comprise a wheel
set that you can take home and install on your own
bike and keep.
Use of shop supplies is included in the course fee.
Classes are held spring/summer at Winterborne
Bicycle Institute, #8-180 Southgate Dr., Guelph.
“I use the material on an almost daily basis both for my
own work and for teaching our staff. I have applied so
much of what I have learned that I can’t imagine operating
a shop without the training.”
– Steve Hunter, Student

Exemption Testing & PLAR
Exemption Testing
Apprentices & Non-Apprentices
Background - The Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and
Universities (MTCU) has authorized community colleges to administer trade exemption
testing for apprentices and non-apprentices. Apprentices may challenge within their
community colleges the in-school portion of apprenticeship levels of the trade-specific
apprenticeship program depending on their level of expertise and time spent on the job.
Non-apprentices can likewise challenge the in-school portion of the program starting at
level one.
The exemption tests are based on the formal instruction requirements for an
apprenticeship program. To be eligible to write an exemption test, the apprentices or
non-apprentices must possess the entry requirements for the trade. Minimum age for
writing the test is 16. Trade-specific standards and entry requirements can be obtained
from the local Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Training Colleges and University
(MTCU) Training Office at 519-653-5758 or at:
www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/employmentontario/training/certification.html
Who to Contact and How to Register - The exemption tests are written in sequential
order. For more information on the process of exemption testing for apprentices and
non-Apprentices, including obtaining the test breakdown and confirming eligibility,
please contact Daniela Stoicoiu at: [email protected]
or 519-748-5220, ext. 2260
Availability - Apprenticeship (APPR) Exemption tests are scheduled twice a month at the
Doon (Kitchener) Campus, Main Building, Lab 2A212, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM as follows:
2016 - March 8 and 22
April 5 and 26
June 7 and 21
July 5 and 19
September 6 and 20 October 11 and 25
May 10 and 24
August 2 and 16
November 8 and 22
Test candidates must bring photo identification on the day of testing.
Candidates must register a minimum of 7 days prior to the preferred test day.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition
Earn credits for what you already know!
You can earn Conestoga credits through the Prior Learning Assessment and
Recognition (PLAR) process.
Conestoga recognizes prior learning of skills, knowledge or competencies that have been
acquired through employment, education (informal/formal), non-formal learning or
other life experiences. Prior learning must be measureable at the required academic level
and meet Conestoga standards of achievement for current courses. Challenge exams and
portfolio development are the main methods of assessment. Other methods of assessment
may be available depending upon the nature of the course objectives. Successful
completion of the assessment results in a course credit recorded on an official Conestoga
transcript. PLAR cannot be used by registered Conestoga students for the clearance of
academic deficiencies or to improve grades or to obtain admission into a program.
Who to Contact and How to Register - For guidance on the PLAR process and
registration, please contact the Credit Transfer Office at [email protected]. For
each course you wish to challenge, please provide the course code and name as well as your
Conestoga student number.
The PLAR Policy and Procedure may be found on
http://www.conestogac.on.ca/policies/academics.jsp.
Availability - PLAR tests are scheduled twice a month at the Doon campus, Main
Building, Lab 2A212, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM as follows:
2016 - March 8 and 22
April 5 and 26
June 7 and 21
July 5 and 19
September 6 and 20 October 11 and 25
May 10 and 24
August 2 and 16
November 8 and 22
PLAR test candidates must bring photo identification on the day of testing. PLAR test
candidates must register a minimum of 14 days prior to the preferred test day.
