Wisconsin High School Seniors receiving the 2015 Wisconsin Pork Association Scholarships include,
Sarah Strathman, Brodhead; Kari Breuer, Glen Haven; Kori Beisbier, Reedsburg; Cody Adams,
Platteville; and Mercedes Schulz, Dalton.
The Wisconsin Pork Association (WPA)
recognized scholarship recipients during
their annual meeting held in conjunction with
the Corn/Soy Expo in Wisc. Dells. Nine high
school seniors and college students were
awarded a total of $3,000 in scholarships.
Whitmore Memorial Scholarship
The Whitmore Memorial Scholarship
was established as a legacy to the late
Rex Whitmore, a master statesman and
communicator who served as the first
executive director of the Wisconsin Pork
Association. Applicants for this scholarship
must be a junior or senior at UW-Madison,
UW-Platteville or UW-River Falls. Each
university selects a candidate to represent
their school in the selection.
The $500 scholarship was awarded
to Kate Griswold, a UW-Madison junior
studying Communication with certificates
in Agriculture Business and International
Agriculture. While growing up, Kate was
involved in 4-H and showed a variety of
livestock, however hogs were always her
favorite project. She says her diversified
experiences in the livestock and hog
industries inspired her to seek a career in
agriculture where she can give back to the
hog industry.
Mikayla Horstman, a junior majoring in
Agricultural Business and Soil and Crop
Science at UW-Platteville and Emily
Warren, a UW-River Falls senior majoring
in Animal Science with a Meat Animal
Emphasis, received $250 scholarships.
WPA Scholarship
This scholarship is presented each year
to high school seniors pursuing further
education with an interest in agriculture.
Kori Beisbier, daughter of Mike and Amy
Beisbier, Reedsburg, received the $500
WPA Scholarship. Kori has been very
engaged in 4-H and FFA Swine projects.
She has been helping her dad on the
farm since she was very young. Kori’s
responsibilities vary to include everything
from breeding to selecting hogs for market,
Wisconsin Pork Association
but she most enjoys spending time in the
farrowing house. Kori will graduate from
Reedsburg Area High School and plans to
attend Iowa State University where she will
major in Food Science with a minor in meat
science.
The four other finalists each received
a $250 scholarship. The include: Cody
Adams, son of Arnold and Alicia Adams,
Platteville; Kari Breuer, daughter of Joe
and Cindi Breuer, Glen Haven; Mercedes
Schulz, daughter of Bruce and Loretta
Schulz, Dalton; Sarah Strathman, daughter
of Tom and Lisa Strathman, Brodhead
Gunderson Memorial Scholarship
The Wisconsin Pork Association, in
cooperation with the family of Buell
Gunderson, established a scholarship
program in 2007 to recognize the many
contributions that Buell Gunderson made
to the Wisconsin pork industry. Gunderson,
together with his wife, Bernice, served as
Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Pork
Association for 20 plus years and assisted
in growing the organization from its initial
roots to the successful organization that it is
today--sponsoring scholarships, developing
youth programs and helping to support the
pork producers of the state.
Individuals who have shown considerable
dedication and involvement to the pork
industry are eligible for this scholarship.
Consideration is given to youth who have
established their own production herd,
been involved on their family operation, or
shown specific interest in pork production
or livestock judging.
Claire LeFevre, Luxemburg, is the
2015 recipient. LeFevre is a second year
veterinary student at the University of
Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.
She became interested in the industry while
growing up on her family’s hobby farm and
her passion for swine expanded further
while attending UW-River Falls for her
undergraduate degree in Animal Science.
Upon completing veterinary school, Claire’s
goal is to become a swine vet in Wisconsin.

WPA Supports Youth Programs
Throughout the year, WPA offers a number
of programs focused on developing leaders
in the Wisconsin pork industry. In addition
to these programs, we annually support
livestock activities through FFA, 4-H and the
Wisconsin Livestock Breeders Association.
WPA is also a sponsor of awards for youth
exhibitors at the Wisconsin State Fair.
2015
Pork producers, allied industry partners, and those individuals
with a general interest in the Wisconsin pork industry are
encouraged to sign up as a member of the Wisconsin Pork
Association. Your membership provides a voice for you and
other Wisconsin pork producers when state and federal public
policy issues threaten our ability to farm. Ongoing outreach to
Wisconsin legislators and state agency officials by our members,
staff and our lobbying partners at DeWitt, Ross & Stevens helps
keep your concerns visible. And, continued contact with the
offices of our Congressmen and Senators in Washington D.C. is
also vital.
As a WPA member, you will receive regular communications
on important industry topics. Members also receive coupons
from industry partners, offering discounts for products and
services (participating businesses include Animart, NASCO,
Frontier Servco – FS, JBS United, Premier Cooperative, and TH
Agrichemical). You will also, of course, have the opportunity to
participate in several pork industry programs throughout the
coming year.

Association member, call 1-800-822-7675 or visit www.wppa.org.

- Austin Lynd
2014 WI State Fair Supreme Champion Swine Showman
Meet Austin Lynd, Janesville, WI, a 16 year old sophomore
at Clinton High School and son of Darren and Laura Lynd
and brother to 14 year old Clinton High School freshman,
Natalee.
Darren works on the family farm, Triple L Show Pigs and
Austin Lynd, Janesville,WI with his family, Laura, Natalee and Darren,
with Lucky, his home raised barrow named Grand Champion at the 2012
Wisconsin State Fair.
8
Laura is employed in the Clinton School Disrict office.
Austin was named Supreme Champion Swine Showman
at the 2014 Wisconsin State Fair and Natalee was Supreme
Showman at the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair.
The Lynd family runs about 50 sows (Crosses, Yorkshire,
Hampshire, Berkshire, Spots). They sell market barrows and
gilts, as well as breeding boars and gilts. They currently have
five boars in stud and sell semen as well.
“Both Natalee and I have been showing since we could
walk. Our first show was in Stoughton at a small jackpot
show, I think we were four and three years old” Austin tells.
“I simply grew up with it” Austin confirms. “I show both
market animals and breeding stock, primarily home-raised
animals. We have purchased a few barrows over the past few
years, but Natalee and I show what we raise”.
“My favorite experiences involve showing all around the
country. I enjoy meeting new people at various National
Swine Registry shows. My favorite show is the World Pork
Expo (WPX). I was Reserve Champion Showman in the junior
division at WPX in 2012 - that was pretty cool!
“I also exhibited the Grand Champion Market Barrow at WI
State Fair in 2012 with a home-raised barrow named “Lucky”.
The past two years I’ve had the Champion Berkshire Barrow
honors at Wi State Fair. I really like the Camp of Champions.

“Showing in the ring has taught me a lot of responsibility,
work ethic, and most importantly how lucky we are to grow
up.d feel prepared before heading to a show”, he emphasized.
There are several people that have helped me over the
years…my parents really push me to be a better showman
and critique me every time we go out. Natalee and I are very
competitive and enjoy showing against each other, which
makes us both better showmen. We work together every
day training, walking and feeding the pigs and push each
other” Austin states.

“Showing has made me grow as a person because
of the responsibility that is necessary to succeed”.
- Jacob Krebs
Meet Jacob Krebs, Rio, WI, 17 year old High School Junior
with an eye for hogs and a desire to major in Animal Science
and Animal Nutrition.
“My dream job would be doing something that I love, that
way I would not work a day in my life’’ the young producer
relates. South Dakota State, UW-Platteville or UW-River Falls
are under consideration for furthering his education.
Jacob is quick to point out his interest in the Chester White
breed. “I got started with the breed thanks to my great-uncle,
Robert Nelson, who purchased my first gilt from Tom Rake”.
The youngest of the four children of David and Kim Krebs,
Jacob has been showing hogs for 12 years.
David, a self-employed carpenter and farmer, raised butcher
hogs as a hobby. Then Jacob, along with brother, Zack, and
sisters, Samantha and Megan, decided to start showing. The
transition was made to raise and sell show pigs and breeding
stock.
“We show strictly home raised animals because it means
more when you win with a bred and owned animal”, he
confirms.
Jacob Krebs, Rio, with his Champion Bred and Owned and Reserve
Champion Chester White Gilt at the 2013 Wisconsin State Fair.
10
They have shown both market animals and breeding stock
throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. This coming year they
are looking forward to attending World Pork Expo in Iowa.
The Krebs family operation consists of 25 sows and 10
replacement gilts. Plus they always have four to six boars at
their home stud and co-own three others with Power Point
Boar Stud.
“We farrow all of our sows twice a year”, he continues.
“The spring litters are show pigs and summer litters are sold,
mostly as meat for a restaurant in Madison. The remaining
butcher hogs and roaster pigs are directly marketed through
Lodi Sausage and Baraboo Meat Market.
“Our herd contains Hampshires, Yorkshires, Chester Whites,
and crossbreds, but we are looking to diversify even further.
The marketing program is word of mouth, and through
fliers we put up every year throughout Wisconsin along with
our website information”.
Jacob’s main responsibilities around the farm are cleaning
pens, feeding, watering, walking pigs during show season,
bedding, washing and shaving pigs in the summer, up keep
on the buildings, and analyzing all of our animals to make
sure they are healthy and to address any problems.
Jacob, as well as his brother and sisters, have enjoyed
success with their show hogs.
Some of Jacob’s favorite experiences have been winning
Grand Champion overall market hog in 2009 at the Columbia
County Fair with a purebred Chester White barrow; Reserve
Supreme Champion Overall Boar with a Chester White in
2011, and Reserve Champion Chester White Gilt at the 2013
National Barrow Show.
“Showing has made me grow as a person because of the
responsibility that is necessary to succeed, along with the
sportsmanship that is important to make life-long friends”
he stresses.
“My tips for the younger showmen, is to stay humble, always
thank the people who help you out, shake the judges hand in
class, along with after showmanship, even if you don’t win,

State Fair Market Animals Must Be DNA/RFID Identified
Youth interested in showing market beef,
sheep or swine at the 2015 Wisconsin State
Fair will need to get their animal projects
DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin
Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC)
by the respective State Fair eligibility
deadlines.
WLIC is coordinating a
statewide DNA/RFID identification program
for Wisconsin County and State Fairs.
This identification system allows animals
which are DNA/RFID identified through
the WLIC County and State Fair program
to meet Wisconsin State Fair Identification
requirements as long as the process is
completed (all forms returned and samples
on file) by the respective Wisconsin State
Fair identification deadline postmark.
Wisconsin
State
Fair
DNA/RFID
identification deadlines (postmark):
Swine: Monday – May 11, 2015
How do I get my animals identified?:
Request DNA/RFID tag identification by
going to the WLIC website at www.wiid.
org/county-fair-dna-id-project.
Print out,
complete and mail the request form with
payment to WLIC. Make sure you return
DNA and required paperwork to WLIC by
the Wisconsin State Fair identification
postmark deadline listed above. Tags and
paperwork are ONLY available through
WLIC. The Wisconsin State Fair Office no
longer processes DNA/RFID tag requests.
How much will DNA/RFID identification
cost?:
$10 per animal identified for
required DNA and RFID tag identification.
If your animal has an existing 840 RFID ear
tag you can purchase and submit a DNA
envelope separately for $5.00. Be sure to
list the existing RFID ear tag number on the
paperwork and DNA submission.
Wisconsin Pork Association
Will my County DNA/RFID tag qualify
for Wisconsin State Fair?: Wisconsin
State Fair will accept all DNA/RFID samples
submitted through WLIC by the respective
Wisconsin State Fair identification postmark
deadline. Samples for Wisconsin State Fair
postmarked after the Wisconsin State Fair
identification deadline postmark will NOT be
accepted. Please check the WLIC website
(www.wiid.org) to verify which counties are
participating in the statewide DNA/RFID
identification program.
What if my County is not participating
in the statewide DNA/RFID program?:
No problem! Request Wisconsin State Fair
DNA/RFID identification through WLIC.
Make sure you return DNA and required
paperwork to WLIC by the Wisconsin State
Fair identification deadline postmark listed
above.
Do I need to let Wisconsin State Fair
know I have my animal DNA/RFID
identified?:
No required DNA/RFID
identification paperwork needs to be sent
to Wisconsin State Fair. Wisconsin State
Fair will receive eligible market animal
identification numbers from WLIC after
the Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID
identification postmark deadline. Potential
exhibitors are required to submit their
Fair entries prior to the June (online or
paper) entry deadlines by entering directly
with Wisconsin State Fair.
DNA/RFID
identification is NOT your entry to the Fair.

To apply, Wisconsin youth
submitted a Pig Project Scholarship
request to WPA which addressed the following
areas: project goals, simple budget for the
project, Meat Animal Quality Assurance
certification date, future goals as they relate
to the pork industry, and a paragraph stating
why the Wisconsin Pork Association should
select them for the Youth Pig Project.
For more information on the Youth
Pig Project, contact the Wisconsin Pork
Association at 1-800-822-7675, or go to our

The Wisconsin Pork Association’s mission
is to insure the future success of the
Wisconsin pork industry. WPA represents the
interests of the pork industry members with a
strong emphasis on social issues, public and
government policies, environment, animal
welfare and safety.
Outagamie County UW-Extension held its
first annual bacon processing contest for 4-H
and FFA members.
“The activity was aimed at helping youth
learn more about the science and art of
making bacon” stated Zen Miller, County
Extension Agent.
The contest included education on how to
break down a whole carcass into primal cuts,
how to trim the belly in preparation of making
bacon, the process of curing and smoking and
food safety. There were
19 youth participating in
the program and each
had the chance to make
their own slab of bacon,
which were judged.
Spencer
Abendroth,
grandson of Mike and
Judy Salter, received the
Grand Champion Bacon
Award.

and Beyond
“The shows are not about how well the hogs place but it’s rather
about the people we spend time with along with being able to
spend time with my father.” - Shelby Grinnell
University of Wisconsin, Platteville student, Shelby Grinnell, was named Reserve
Supreme Swine Showperson at the 2014
Wisconsin State Fair
“ Over the last four years my dad and I
have spent a lot of time at shows for the
Wisconsin Show Pig Association (WSPA.)
The weekends I spend with my dad at shows
have come to be my favorite part of showing. The shows are not about how well the
hogs place but it’s rather about the people
we spend time with along with being able
to spend time with my father. My father
works incredibly hard to support our family during the week and our time together
is limited but shows provides us that time,”
the 19 year old daughter of Mark and Mary
Lou Grinnell, Sharon, relates
“My time in the show ring as a youth is
quickly coming to an end and it seems that
I find myself answering this question ‘how
has showing helped me grow as a person’
often lately”, Shelby continues. “My answer
seems to change each time, because I do
not believe there is a way I can truly put my
experience into words. I have learned the
cliché things such as, hard work and time
management but it is so much more than
that. Showing hogs has given me a passion
and focus in my life. It has taught me my
priorities, at a young age I learned how to
care for another life and the importance behind it. As a five year old I was learning the
story behind food production, a knowledge
that I believe lacks in todays society. This
project has brought our family many highs
and lows and l have had the chance to learn
from both”.
Shelby, along with her twin brother, Brandon, started showing pigs together at five
years old and continued together at the
county level. A younger sister, Mikayla, also
showed hogs.Currently Shelby raises betwwen seven and ten show pigs a year, mainly
market hogs, that are shown on the WSPA
circuit, at county fairs and at state fair.
Shelby also was involved with quarter
horses and beef cattle. The Grinnells purchased a Hereford heifer for each of their
children. From there the developed a small
purebred Hereford herd.
Shelby was involved with the Wiscon-

sin Buckskin Horse Association and was
a member of her high school equestrian
team.
“The best advice that I can provide to
another showman is to not focus on your
placing or who you beat on any given day.
But to rather focus on doing the best you
can and putting your best effort forward
every time you step into the ring. I believe
that if you put in the effort and hard work
in the months preparing no matter where
you place on show day, you will always be
a winner. The shows that I feel I have won
the most at are not the shows I walk away
with the most money or biggest ribbons
but rather the shows that I know I put everything I could into my project,” stresses
the champion showman.
“My father, Mark, has by far had the biggest impact on my life in the show ring.
He is the reason I got started and the reason that I can continue each year. He never
forced this project on me but has always
been there to support it the best way he
could. He taught my siblings and me that
when we started this project that participating in showmanship was never an option. If our family was at a show, we would
be entered in showmanship. He was never
worried about who we beat or how we
placed, his only focus was how well we did
for ourselves. He wanted us in this project
solely for the growth of ourselves rather
than the collection of money or ribbons.
Shelby is studying at the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville pursuing a degree in
Agriculture Business with a minor in Accounting. She is preparing for a possible
future career in Agriculture Finance.
