A RIVER IS FLOWING
By Denis & Gwen Smith
NEW RELEASE
CELEBRATING JUBILEE 50
— 50 years of the
Assemblies of God in
Australia. 1937-87.
An inspirational book by Denis & Gwen Smith on the
history of the A.O.G. in Australia. For all those who have
wondered how the fastest growing denomination in
Australia came into existence — it's all here, with many
pages of historical photographs. The unity, dedication
and zeal for God of the early pioneers is vividly painted
as are the recent events that led to the incredible
growth of the past 10 years. Successes, failings,
disappointments, discovery of keys in growth... this is an
exciting but honest history that will challenge as well as
enlighten.

The touch of love
In Luke 15 we read of Christ's account
of the prodigal son. Verse 20 holds the key
here: 'And he arose, and came to his
father. But when he was yet a great way off,
his father saw him, and had compassion,
and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed
him.'
Here we observe the story of restoration
with a son who had abandoned his home
and family. Yet, the reunion reveals the
father giving his son a touch of love as he
meets him with a kiss of reconciliation.
Really, the father could have waited at
the door, or even inside the house, yet he
chose to run out and meet his son. He met
the boy with a touch of love, throwing his
arms around him in an act of unreserved
forgiveness.
We must learn to deal in love with people. I appreciate the words of James
Robinson in this regard when he says, 'I
never condemn a sinner, 1 condemn sin!'
What powerful words.
Today, as never before, we all desperately need the touch of love.
The touch of compassion
The key verse here is Luke 10:34: 'And
went to him, and bound up his wounds,
pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his
own beast, and brought him to an inn, and
took care of him.'
This particular verse clearly reveals the
touch of compassion shown by the Good
Samaritan. The Samaritan just did not
look upon the fallen man, for he poured oil
and wine into his wounds — all of which
has a beautiful scriptural application.
Just as the man on the road had been
robbed and torn by human hands, so too
have many of us today. We have been
wounded by life, by circumstances, by the
business world, and robbed by all kinds of
situations. In essence, many of us are
walking around as 'dead people', without a
sense of purpose, destiny and direction.
We have lost our vision.
However, there is a touch of compassion — a touch of release, through the oil
of the Holy Spirit, the wine of joy. The
world desperately needs to see and feel the
touch of compassion — our compassion.
So many people we will contact will be hurt
and wounded, left to die by the circumstances of life.
God give us compassion today for the

Ed. note: In September 'Evangel I ran an
article on the dangers of Dungeons and
Dragons' and, in June's riewslines,
pointed out that certain TV program
sponsors continue to negatively stereotype Christians. Other areas of concern
today are Nestles' latest Zodiac' chocolate bars, full frontal nudity and blatant
profanity on most TV channels, 'Hot'
brand posters sold in record departments
of major stores, certain greeting cards,
someHissan adverts, occult-riddled childrens TV programmes and comics, Halloween (see riewslines page 30) and Heinz
Spooky Spaghetti'.
Paul Camac is the concerned senior
pastor of New Life Centre, Caloundra (Qld.)
who picked up the challenge to the Heinz
Corporation in respect of its sales of the
'Spooky Spaghetti' product. You probably
read about it in one of the major newspapers. Reports said that the Heinz company
were treating the matter seriously and in a
reply to Pastor Camac indicated that the

sors, TV channels, manufacturers and so
on are not without weight, as Heinz's reply
to Pastor Camac and others has proven.
A word of advice — You may feel
encouraged to take a stand against suspect advertising sales products and certain TV programs and to pen your disapproval. Companies and TV stations do
want to hear from the public and quite
often they do take note but write wisely.
Avoid Pentecostal and religious jargon' and keep letters simple, as short as
possible and straight to the point. It is not
appropriate to deliberately attack every
aspect of a given organisation — commend the good qualities as Pastor Camac
did in his letter. After all, the original
founder of Heinz was a fine Christian who
contributed much to Sunday schools, and
the company does sell good, wholesome
products.
Remember too, chocalate bars and
food products in themselves are not dangerous. It is the seemingly innocent flirtation with mild aspects of the occult that
can open a doorway for later, deeper and
deadly involvement.

Australia will soon be celebrating its
Bicentenery and no doubt part of the festivities will remind us of the early days of
convict beginnings. However, it is important to realise that our heritage is not
totally a convict one and that there were
colonies other than convict ones.
South Australia, for example, was a free
and Christian colony with a destiny to
reach Asia and the Pacific for Christ. Adelaide was known in the other states as The
Holy City and is still referred to as the 'City
of Churches', despite the recent increase
in crime. Perhaps at this time of approaching these 200th year celebrations it would
be good to consider South Australia's
godly beginnings and the aspirations of its
founders for its future.
A special purpose in God
The person who opened up the southern
portion of Australia for free settlement
was Captain Charles Sturt, one of Australia's greatest and most heroic inland
explorers. He was a man of courage and
prayer, for 'in many a scene of danger, of
difficulty, and of sorrow he had risen from
his knees calm and confident.'1
God spared his life on numerous occasions as he endured tremendous hardships when facing the harshness of the
Australian inland. When he completed his
exploration Sturt, with his men, 'went
down on his knees and with tears of joy
offered his thanks to Almighty God.'2
Charles Sturt loved the majesty of the
bush and often 'praised his God that He
had done such wondrous things.'3 It was
Sturt who in Feb. 1834 wrote to the Colonial Office and 'prophesied that the men of
South Australia would one day people the
heart of the continent and that the Australian colonies would emulate America.
He urged them to convince the Aborigine
that the white man was coming as a
brother. He urged them, too, not to give
the Aborigine trifling presents but to protect him against violence and aggression,
until that day when as children of the same
heavenly Father, they had all learned to
look at each other with love and charity.'4
Then there were men who believed God
had a special purpose in the Christian
settlement of Australia. Men such as the
Permanent Under Secretary of the Colonial Office, James Stephen, who 'believed
that the government of men should conform to the government of God,'5 and
encouraged Christian families to settle
here as well as being influential in the
choice of Christian leaders in the colonising of the country.
Co-operating with 'providence'
Stephen's desire was to establish our
nation as 'a Christian, virtuous enlightened state in the centre of the eastern
hemisphere and within reach of the Chinese, Hindu and Mohammedan nations.'6
Certainly we are seeing the continuing
fulfilment of this great prophetic statement given to the Lieutenant-Governor of
Van Diemen's land more than 160 years
ago, as we see China opening up to the
printing of the Word of God, and as we see
missionaries continuing to be sent out
from this nation.
Many Christians were instrumental in
the formation of South Australia, amongst
them was a man named Robert Torrens
who stated in a speech in the House of
Commons in 1827 that 'we are co-operat-

ing in the scheme of Providence and are
the favoured instruments in causing
Christian civilisation to "cover the earth
as the waters cover the sea".'7
George Fife Angas, who resigned as a
Colonisation Commissioner to take up a
position of the board of directors of the
South Australia Company, was also a
committed Christian and the real father of
South Australia's religious liberties. 'My
great object was, in the first instance, to
provide a place of refuge for pious dissenters of Great Britian, who could in their
new home discharge their consciences
before God in civil and religious duties
without any disabilities.'8 It was Angas'
hope 'that South Australia will become the
headquarters for the diffusion of Christianity in the Southern Hemisphere.'9
It was claimed that in fifty years he
circulated over one million copies of
scripture, many millions of tracts and two
million copies of devotional books such as
Spurgeon's 'Morning by Morning' and
'Evening by Evening'.10 Angas also provided a voluntary non-denominational
elementary education for sixpence a week.
The schools' sole textbook was the Bible!

Toledo. Crying often will simply confirm
the negative aspects of a person's situation and convince him he should be
depressed, she said. 'Someone will say, "I
didn't think it was bothering me so much,
but look how I'm crying, I must be upset",'
said Labott, who studied 714 men and
women. 'The behaviour itself makes their
mood worse.' Those who cry much under
stress are more hostile, anxious, tired, and
depressed than those who cried a little

DALLAS, U.S.A.: meditation failure
When a power blockout occured during
Shirley MacLaine's 'Connecting with the
Higher Self seminar in Dallas, MacLaine
tried to summon her 'spiritual powers' to
repair the problem, but to no avail. The
cause of the backout: a 12-inch water line
had burst and flooded a power station.
MacLaine told the 1,000 seminar attendees, who paid $300 a head, to sit crosslegged and try to repair the broken water
line through medidation. 'Imagine the
water slowing down,' she instructed them.
'Now picture the workmen finding the
broken pipe and securing them together.'
However, the seminar — originally scheduled to last 7 hours — ended a few minutes later in the still dark room!
WORLD: Bible translation bloopers
While Bible translation for the most
part is a serious and solemn business, a
few chuckles can arise when translators
slip up.
Checking the draft of the Song of Songs
not long ago, a United Bible Societies
translation team found that the person
responsible for the language conversion
had misunderstood the English text. In
chapter 4, verse 2, where the Good News
Bible text reads: 'Your teeth are as white
as sheep... not one of them is missing,'
the translated version came out: 'Your
teeth are as white as sheep... only one of
them is left.
THE SIX WEEKS
WONDER PATIENT
It was October 1, 1986, and my husband
was still in the Homsby hospital recuperating after a kidney operation and, it
seemed, progressing so well. The phone
rang early that morning; it was the hospital to inform me that my husband had
taken a bad turn and was in the Intensive
Care Unit (ICU). They would not tell me
anything more and for a moment 1 wondered if they were concealing something
worse. I felt numb and my throat went dry.
By JAYANTHA JEYARATNAM
was being monitored on another machine
and they said his condition was 'critical
and grave'.
Prayers
I requested our home fellowship leader's wife, Jenny, who brought me to the
hospital to phone our pastors and ask for
prayers for Christy. I was so happy that we
belong to a warm supportive and growing
church, the Hills Christian Life Centre.
They immediately prayed fervently for
Christy's healing as well as upholding the

had not only left him paralysed on the
right side but had also resulted in loss of

which revealed that there were a number
of blood cloths in the brain and the damage done was extensive.
As a result of this, the doctors further
informed us, that even if he should come
round, he might never be normal again. We
told the doctors and nurses that we
believe in a 'miracle working' God and
that Christy was the object of a lot of
prayers by committed Christians not only
in Australia but right around the world.
They probably thought we were either
naive or insane.
As we were being so positive of Christy
receiving complete healing, the hospital
staff were taken aback and felt we were not
being realistic. So a social worker was
called in to prepare me to accept 'reality'
as it were. She would do her utmost to try
to convince me how critical the situation
was. She even asked me if 1 had prepared
the children. In actual fact the boys had
been really good right through this ordeal
and their childlike faith was so strong it
was very encouraging. They simply told
everyone 'our dad will get well soon and
come home because we have asked Jesus.'
One day Shehan came home from
school and said, 'Mum I found more people to pray for dad' and told me how he had
'rounded up' some of his friends at school
to do just that!
We continued to pray, not merely for
Christy's life, but for his complete healing
and the recovery of the health he had
enjoyed prior to the operation, Never once
did we doubt the alternative and God
assured us in many ways and gave us His
complete peace.
Assurance
In a moment of weakness I cried unto
God saying I know in my heart that you are
going to touch and heal Christy, but I want
to hear from your Word. As I opened the
Bible my eyes fell on Daniel 6:26-27, 'He is
a living God, and He will rule forever. His
kingdom will never be destroyed, and His
power will never come to an end. He saves
and rescues; He performs wonders and
miracles in heaven and on earth. He saved
Daniel from being killed by the lions.'

What would you do if you knew somebody was into witchcraft and wanted to
help them? Obviously, the first thing we
would have to establish is that they
wanted to be helped!
But once we have established that, we
would immediately get right into deliverance ministry. Ministering our authority
in Christ, bringing the person involved to
renounce their involvement in forbidden
areas of activity, and even remove themselves from certain items they used in
their witchcraft.
Subtleness
Modern day witchcraft, however, is a
bit more subtle than the usual confrontation with witches!
What am I getting at? Let's allow the
Word of Qod to speak: Tor rebellion is as
the sin of witchcraft!' (i Sam. 15:23).
Witchcraft and rebellion grow off of the
same tree. They are of the same spirit and
produce the same sorts of fruit. There is
very little difference (if any!).
Titus 3:1-2 instructs us to remind people in the body of Christ to be subject
(submissive) to authorities. Rebellion has
to do with authority. One way to get rid of
all witchcraft and rebellion is to do away
with authority!
But to do that, we would have to get rid
of God! You cannot separate Qod and
authority. Romans 13 tells us that all
authority comes from Qod. This is the way
of Qod. If we come into His kingdom, one
of the first things we must learn is to
submitandhonourall the authorities that

Praise is one of the greatest evidences of faith. The very act of praise
releases the power of Qod into a set of
circumstances and enables Qod to
change them if this is His design. Very
often it is our attitude that hinders the

Did you ever wonder why Qod said that
honouring your father and mother had
attached to it a long life and all being well

first authority we confront in life and if we
learn to honour them properly, then we
will have no trouble with all the other
authorities in life. All will be well. A long
life will be ours.
Authority lies in three basic areas: family, civil and church authority. We need to
continually ask ourselves if we are submissive to these authorities, because authority is of Qod. He put it there for our protection and our own good! Only the spiritually minded see it that way. The carnal mind Successfulness

THE PRACTICE OF PENTECOST
By George Canty, Marshall Pickering,
210pp. RRP $14.25.
George Canty is no newcomer to Pentecost having been an internationally
renowned speaker for many years and a
Pentecostal pioneer, evangelist, teacher,
author and broadcaster.
This latest book of Canty's has been
subtitled "A Handbook on discerning and
developing the gifts of the Spirit' which
will cause many to think 'Oh, no; not
another "manual" on spiritual gifts.'
However, the subtitle belies the fulness
of the book's content. A prolific writer,
with over 30 years experience in Pentecostal leadership, the author does not dis• * s e 'the 9 gifts' until the final chapters

s own experience in discovering
t and the resultant progress in
development, ministry and revel,me readers may be disappointed at
and want to skip Canty's autobiographical reflections. Don't! This section, as
with part two ('Back to the Start —Basic
Truths'), contains profound insights and
builds a base for his later teachings on the
gifts, and includes excellent chapters on
the baptism in the Spirit and the anointing.
Part 3 which specifically deals with
tongues is especially insightful and the
author, as he does throughout the book,
does not hesitate to face front-on contro-
sial issues and even to challenge Pentecostal traditionalism e.g. Should every
tongue be immediately interprets ted?; !s
every tongue meant to be interpretated?;
Are tongues God-ward, man-ward or
both?; Free singing in the Spirit 'on
request' and so on.
'Gifts of Men' is the title of part 4 and
deals with church order, authority and the
ascension gifts of Eph. 4:11. Again, Canty
writes from much experience and with
great insightfulness, e.g. 'Our personal
spiritual life must be watched even more
closely when the gifts of God are granted
and success comes', and Tower (is) one
thing, but a deepening fellowship (with
the Spirit) another' (p.87).
His comments will not please everyone
and he does not mince words, e.g.'to call
(choose) a man from a small restricted
fellowship (as) an apostle would be pretentious, and would deserve the ridicule
the world would have for it' (p.130), and
'Stop making "the gospel appeal", I mean

(p.157).
George Canty's book is well balanced,
scripturally based and effectively challenging. A different style than most b™5"

NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY
By Leon Morris, Academic Books (Zondervan), 368pp. RRP $38.50.
In his preface Dr. Morris, former principal of Ridley College, Melbourne, and
acknowledged author, has written; The

aim of this book is to provide a compact
introduction to the theology of the Mew
Testament. The subject is a big one but I
have not sought to add yet another large
work. Rather I have tried to steer a middle
course between being unhelpfully brief
and being too long and technical for the
student or the interested layman'.
Morris has achieved this, having written
primarily with the student in mind. Yet,
because of his usual thoroughness and
insights he has given us a meaty volume
which will appeal to all — the student and
those who wish a strong, secure base from
which to research further. In considering
the various NT. books, Leon Morris effectively comments on the great themes and
doctrines of Christianity —- the Godhead,
salvation, Christ's passion, truth, judgment, faith and works, life in the Spirit and
so on. A great exponent of the Word, he
has virtually cross referenced every paragraph with many scriptures. Footnotes
have been deliberately kept to a minimum
but the book concludes with an impressive, helpful index of subjects, persons and
scripture references used.
The book, in general, avoids getting
caught up with various critical scholarly
theories and concentrates on what the
actual theology of the M T. books expresses
or implies. As Dr. Morris puts it: 'I am
trying hard to find out what the NT.

out for the righteousness of Christ, and in
doing so, God is going to have His way in
most of the hearts and lives of the body of
Christ, and we will then be able to truly
flow with the Spirit of God.'4
The Queenland State Superintendent
added:
This outpouring of the Holy Spirit is
destined to bring us to the unity of the
Spirit, the unity of the faith, and prepare
us for the coming of the Lord. It is too
important to relegate to the back-room.
Compromise and a watered-down expression of the Spirit-filled life will result in a
torn and empty vessel, with only a smell of
where the new wine used to be. New wine
is not enough. New wine-skins are
essential.'5
The principal of Commonwealth Bible
College drew attention to the need to stay
on the foundations of God's Word:
"What was the secret of the sustained
growth and consolidation of the early
church? The answer is provided in Acts
2:42. "They continued steadfastly in the
apostles' doctrine and fellowship and in
breaking of bread and in prayers." Let us
also "give attendance to reading, to
exhortation, to doctrine" (1 Tim. 4:13)
—the doctrine that is divine, refreshing,
authoritative, purifying, liberating, practical and gloriously contagious.'6
A visiting overseas evangelist expressed
his comments:
'Australia — be aware of the time you
have now. The harvest is there. Launch out
into the deep. Now is the time to make
new efforts. God's Spirit is moving and
wants to use you to lead others to Christ,
to support the church, to encourage your
fellow-believers, to inspire vision, to make
sacrifices. Australia, this is your day!'7
Vision and hardwork
An Executive member spoke concerning vision and leadership:
'Every moment must have vision —
'Where there is no vision, people perish.'
Things grind slowly to a halt. When a
movement ceases to move, it needs to
look for another name! Prophetic vision is
not programs or ambitious plans that we
dream up and then bring to the Almighty
for His blessing. It starts with God, is
received by the Holy Ghost, acted on in
faith, and brings certain results.
This vision must reach into every area
of life: personal, local and national. The
last is equally as important as the others. I
feel I can say that we would never have
achieved such large local churches in Australia, had it not been for the prophetic
vision at national level. When a movement
has vision, and clear-cut direction, that
vision releases those who are linked to it
in fellowship. It creates the sort of atmosphere in which ministries thrive and come
to fruitfulness.
A man's right to the privilege of leadership is that he has received a God-given
vision. We can't lead without it, neither
will others follow.
People don't get inspired by plans or
ambitious targets — think of a number
and double it! They get enthused, and
their faith rises when they are confronted
by men with a God-given vision. Such men
will fire others to expect the apparently
unattainable.
We are presently enjoying great times in
God, but 1 would prophesy that the best
days for the Assemblies of God, and
indeed the Pentecostal movement, lie
ahead, and that we will emerge to fulfil our
potential in God. It will not "just happen"
— great leadership, hard work, vision,
much prayer and pioneering new areas are
necessary, and God is still producing the
right men in Australia, to bring about the
necessary changes.
Change doesn't come easily — people
are generally adverse to it and oppose it.
Yet, without necessary change, the prophetic voice will be stifled and the movement will never be released further.
As God's people pray, get together, and
refuse to accept anything less than the
Word of the Lord for their day, you can be
sure that the Spirit of God will rise up, and
raise up, and release His people into the
fullness of His blessing. There is simply no
substitute for that.'8
Avoid spiritual erosion
One of the founding pioneers of the
Assemblies of God in Australia commented:
'As we run our eyes over the list of the
numerous assemblies, we have to realise
that the Lord has done things for us, for
which we are glad. We must, however, in
viewing this splendid superstructure, the
work of the Holy Spirit, think back to the
foundation and the Founder of our fellowship. The stability of the 'building', and of

our future, rests upon the strengths and
security1 of our foundations.
Time has an eroding effect on the
Church, and character and the qualities of
spiritual endurance, sacrifice and separation can be undermined by allowing the
world, the flesh and the devil to replace
the dedicated example of the fathers of
our faith.
It is Australia's time of visitation, and it
was once prophesied by the English
preacher, Smith Wigglesworth, that Australia is to be the last nation to be visited
with revival before the Lord returns. The
time has come and we see the signs of
preparation everywhere. Despite the prevailing wickedness and violence, the Holy
Spirit is encouraging hearts everywhere,
to give heed to the gospel.
We are prospering and possessing the
land. We were once a despised handful of
dedicated saints, with assemblies one
could number on our fingers. All the
Spirit-filled were known to each other, and
our leaders were poor, but rich in faith.

WHERE WILL THE RIVER FLOW?
Regarding the future of the 'river' of
the AOQ in Australia, one of the lecturers
at Commonwealth Bible College wrote in
'86: Tor our movement, the past ten years
have seen incredible growth and change.
The statistics are stunning. The numbers
of churches in our movement has increased from 150 in 1976, to 460 in 1986.
That's an increase of over 200%! Ten years
ago, our total constituency was around
10.000 people. Today ('86) it is in excess of
55,000, a 450% increase! In 1976, our
missionary financial goal was $320,000,
today it is $3.5 million, a massive 990%
increase. Ten years have brought quite a
change.
In retrospect, two thoughts should be
uppermost in our mind. Firstly, Qod has
done this. It has been His blessing, increase and outpouring, and it is to Him
that we must give praise and glory.
Secondly, we must begin to chart a very
clear, bold course for the next ten years. It
is not time to take our ease, nor to consider that we have arrived, nor to think
that we have done our share. It is time to
make bold plans for growth!
The next ten years have greater potential than the previous ten.'1
What about the next ten years?
The Director of World Missions added:
'Never in the history of missions, has so
much been happening. There are open
doors and receptive people everywhere.
This is the greatest era of Christian
missions, in terms of numbers being
saved and churches planted in the world.
Pentecostal missions are increasingly at
the forefront of world evangelisation.
The message of Christ's power over all
the powers of the evil one is prevailing.
There are still many adversaries, but Qod
is giving victory to missionaries of the
cross of Christ.
Our missionary involvement in the
world is ever-increasing. The Australian
Assemblies of Qod fellowship has a missionary program respected and known in
many parts of the world. This is no reason
to be proud of our achievements, but
thankful to Qod for His enabling. We need
to take the same stance as the apostle
Paul, when he said, 'Woe is me, if I preach
not the gospel.' How important this is, in
the light of the vast number of peoples of
the earth, who are still without the gospel.
But there are more people able to be
won, who are alive now in every country on

'I see renewal occurring in Australia. As
I travel around this nation, I am becoming
very aware of a greater awareness and an
acceptance of the renewal movement.
Although the implications of such a
movement are not readily accepted by the
mainline denominations, a recognition is
coming to the lives of many Australian
church leaders, that their churches and
denominations now need this touch of
renewal,' was the conclusion reached by
one of the Executive Presbytery members.3

Denis V. Smith is Senior Minister of
Morthside Christian Centre, Bundoora, wc.
Five years ago the Lord called Ian Zerna
and his wife, Yvonne, to start a pioneer
church at Gawler, as an outreach from the
Barossa Valley A.O.G., where he was then
the assistant pastor.
Pastor Zema recalls: 'We started to
meet in an old Congregational church and
in the first year we saw good growth to
around 60 people.
Seeking God
'The facility was limited to 100 people
so I began to seek the Lord for His plan of
future growth within the area. God gave
me a deep desire for two separate locations. The first was a well appointed rollerdrome with carpets, air conditioning,
offices and a centrally located position in
town. It is the largest auditorium in the
community with maximum seating of 700
people.
'As we continued to grow, God miraculously opened the door for us (that's
another story) and three years ago, with a
little over 100 people, we moved into the
rollerdrome. We are currently ministering
each Sunday to 250-285 different people
and seeing God's blessing of continual
growth.'
The second property placed on Pastor
lan's heart was 22 acres of land set in
prime position on the corner of the main
highway and the Gawler Bypass. Much of
the interstate traffic out of Adelaide and
all local commuters use this route. The
land is highly visible, accessible and even
has a railway station only two hundred
metres away. However, the land belonged
to the S.A. Housing Trust and was not for
sale.
Ian relates the events: '18 months ago,
after much prayer and planning, I
approached the Trust with an idea of proposed development of the property. I was
given a favourable reply as they saw our
proposal as a service to the community at
large and negotiations were made. Eventually we signed a contract to purchase
the land for $110,000 and I asked for a
twelve month settlement date. Actually we
didn't have any real finances, but I did
have a rhema word from the Lord to proceed and that He would provide the finances over that time.

thanked and praised God for reassuring
me in spite of the seemingly hopeless
situation that Christy was in.
On the 10th day, by the grace of God,
Christy was out of danger and well enough
to leave the ICU. But before doing so, 1 was
informed by the doctor who was to be in
charge of Christy at the rehabilitation
ward that it would be a very long time
before Christy would be able to do things
for himself and even implied that he
might never be in a position to do things
for himself. I didn't despair: Surely God
who spared his life would not leave him
lying helplessly for the rest of his life!
Miracle expected and received
At the rehabilitation was the head nurse
also had a conference with the family at
which my parents and Christy's mother
were also present. She informed us that it
would be a long, long, long time' time
before Christy could leave hospital. My dad
responded with conviction, (I won't be
surprised if he comes home in two weeks
time because we are expecting a miracler
She thought that was impossible, and hastened to say that it doesn't work that way.
10 days later Christy was well enough
to come home for the day in a wheel
chair. The boys were delighted to have
their dad home. We were so excited and
praised God for answering our prayers
At the time of going into the rehabilitation ward Christy would not support himself in a chair. He was supported by pillows
and if they fell off he too would slide to the
floor. He was moved to this ward on
October 15 and visited by a dear lady
known to us as Aunty Middy. She is a
devoted follower of the Lord Jesus Christ
and had herself received a miraculous
healing from God. She spent some time
with us and before leaving told Christy she
wanted to pray for him and that the Lord
had asked her to pray for something specific. So, while she prayed she asked the
Lord to release Christy's speech.
The very next day Christy began to speak
in a whisper but what he said was grammatically correct and very sensible. This
was contrary to what the medical professionals had told us to expect, due to the
extensive damage to the brain. We continued to praise and thank God and our
hearts were full of gratitude. Everyday his
voice got louder and the speech therapist
marvelled and said the she had never seen
anyone recover this quickly and felt that
her therapy was not necessary at all under
the circumstances.
concern and support given us during
Christy's illness. Today he is back in his
previous employment and winning many
to the Lord as he witnesses to his miracle.
We praise God for all He has done for
Christy and our family, and the certainty of
His love and concern, and the promises of
His Word.
Surprise expressed by experts
Christy visited the ICU a couple of times
and the doctors and nurses there would
leave what they were doing and come
round and look at him in amazement. They

too confessed, 'we give all the credit to
God'. Christy improved so well and so
quickly that after coming home for a couple of weekends he was discharged on
Movember 14. Just 6 weeks from the time
of the stroke he walked without any aid
and spoke as well as he used to.
It was at this time that the Senior Resident Medical Officer disclosed to us that
the consulting neurologist had noted in
his report that the patient here suffered a
stroke severe enough to cause stem compression (death) and expressed surprise
to find the patient still alive and conscious. Christy progressed so well in so
short a time that the medical staff at the
hospital named him the 'Wonder Patient'.

What is R.R.?
The Royal Rangers Ministry is an
Assemblies of God local church program
which began in Australia 21 years ago for
boys and girls between the ages of five and
17 years. Its aim is simple: to reach, teach
and keep children for Jesus Christ.
Children take part in a wide variety of
activities including camps of various
sizes and time periods, rallies, field days
with sports events, outings and weekly
evening meetings with impressive ceremonies, devotions, Bible studies, games and
feature periods (such as campcraft and
first aid).
The Frontiersmen Camping Fraternity
is open to all Royal Rangers leaders and
teenagers who have passed various learning and spiritual requirements. It is a
espirit de corps within the R.R. ministry
whose members exemplify the highest
ideals of Christian standards.

Occasionally a double meaning can get
through the most careful of checkers, as
in the completed Hew English Bible. 1
Corinthians 5:9 NEB quotes Paul as saying, 'In my letter I wrote that you must
have nothing to do with loose livers'! The
admonition was, of course, not to associate with those who lead, loose, immoral
lives.
CALIFORNIA: Incredible growth
Dr. Peter Wagner, professor at Fuller
Theological Seminary, recently stated that
Pentecostals now comprise the largest
family of Protestants in the world. He also
estimated that there are 193 million Pentecostals/charismatics in the following
categories: 85 million denominational
Pentecostals, 16 million Protestant charismatics, 50 million Catholic charismatics and 42 million Chinese Pentecostals/
charismatics.
The projected number of Pentecostal/
charismatics in Chine alone by the year
2000 is 440 million and the fastest growing churches in the world today are still
Pentecostal/charismatic ones. Common
growth factors are:
a) Conservative evangelical theology, Biblical authority, and the priority need of
saving souls from hell.
b) Strong pastoral leadership is encouraged.
c) Prayer is a significant, explicit, up
front component of the church's philosophy of ministry.
d) Openness to the person and the work
of the Holy Spirit is maintained at all
times.
e) Abundant financial support of the work
is forthcoming.
f) Worship is a central feature of church
life.
g) Participation in lay ministry is expected of all church members.
h) Extensive Bible teaching ministry is
focused on the total needs of church
members.
SOUTH AMERICA: Pentecostal revival
continues
The church in South Ameriva is continuing to grow at a phenomenal rate. In the
troubled country of Nicaragua, the Pentecostal church is expected to double this
year; in neigbouring El Salvador, a new
church in the capital San Salvador, has
grown to nearly 2,000 in just three
months!
Growth has been particularly outstanding in Brazil and Chile. The Brazilian AOG
is the largest in the world, with nearly 8I/2
million members. In Sao Paulo alone,
there are more than 2,400 AOG congregations and in this city of 12 million people,
more than 550,000 attend an AOG church
each Sunday!
Dr. John Bueno has built up a church of
nearly 20,000 in El Salvador. In October
1986 he felt the time had come to begin a
new work on the opposite side of the city.
With one other staff member, Bueno
began the church and by mid-January
1,700 people were attending the Sunday
services.
ENGLAND: Halloween day of prayer
The Evangelical Alliance is encouraging
British churches to set aside October 31
— the day occultism goes public — as a
day of prayer and spiritual warfare.
In homes, churches, the open air and
the work place, people will pray against
the effects of occult activity during Halloween, particularly as it affects children.
Prayer marches, vigils and prayer chains
will be among the day's activities. The day
of prayer and spiritual warfare follows last
year's 'Uniting the Kingdom in Prayer' day,
which saw thousands of Christians in
hundreds of locations earnestly praying
for their communities and their country.
Says EA's Prayer Secretary, Brian Mills:
'Every year thousands of British children
AUSTRALIAN EVANGEL
are introduced to Halloween as a piece of
harmless fun, not knowing that the innocence of Halloween today, becomes the
witchcraft obsession of tomorrow.' In an
area of the north east of England, some
87% of teenagers had dabbled in the
occult, he said. Local Christians responded
in prayer and evangelism which resulted
in 3,000 people becoming Christians in
the past two years.

The Colonial Office appointed Capt.
John Hindmarsh as Governor and on Dec.
28,1836, he proclaimed South Australia a
province, calling upon those present 'to
prove themselves worthy to be the founders of a great and free colony by their
industry and sobriety, by the strict observance of the ordinances of their religion,'
and to help the natives "by promoting
their advancement in civilisation and,
always under the blessing of divine providence, their conversion to the Christian
faith.'13
Two days later Hindmarsh moved from
Holdfast Bay inland and named Adelaide,
where, within eight years there were more
preachers and places of worship than, by
comparison, the number in the first
decade of New England, U.S.A.14 and within
ten years, over half the population of
9,000 were attending two of the denominational churches, Episcopal and Congregational, and further church buildings
were necessary. From its settlement in
1836 to 1915 Sunday school enrolments
far exceeded those of day schools!15
Lt. Colonel George Gawler, a hero of
Waterloo, was converted reading a book,
Evidences of Christianity and was determined to establish a Christian colony.
Many Christians settled in this colony,
the first in the British Empire not to be
officially aligned to the Church of England.
A group of German Christians, who had
been persecuted in Prussia for refusing to
allow a secular sovereign to dictate to
them about their faith, settled at Klemzig
on the Torrens and at Hahndorf.
Prayer and medidation
Hebrews 11:32 says, "And what more
shall 1 say? I do not have time to tell about
Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David,
Samuel and the prophets, who through
faith conquered kingdoms, administered
justice, and gained what was promised...'.
So also one could continue about many of
the early settlers. People such as Edward
John Eyre, Capt. Barker, a staunch evangelical, T.Q. Stow, who commenced the first
Congregational Church in Adelaide in
1837, Lord Glenelg of the Home Office
who permitted the colonising of South
Australia, or of Sir George Grey who
shared with James Stephen the view that
'prayer and meditation on God's Holy
Word. . . were the inexhaustible, unfathomable source of all pure consolation
and spiritual strength.'16
In conclusion, may we wish South Australias God's richest blessings for the
future, and, to quote the words of Pastor
Kavel (Pastor of the Hahndorf settlers
mentioned above): 'May South Australia
prosper; and all its inhabitants, its immigrants, and all the natives grow together
as one blessed nation labouring unanimously for the advancement of those great
objectives,'17 and of Captain Charles Sturt:
'May the inhabitants of South Australia
continue to deserve and to receive the
protection of that Almighty power, on
whose will the existence of nations as well
as that of individuals depends!'18
Our thoughts, of course, go beyond
South Australia. May these words be
appropriate to every state and each Australian territory and may the whole nation

WORSHIP WITH US
You have the right to ask, Who are the Assemblies of God?'
and we the right to supply the answer.
WHAT WE ARE NOT
We do not claim to be the only true church.

WHAT WE ARE
We are Bible loving, evangelical, Christians who
emphasise afresh the teachings of scripture.
We are part of a great world-wide fellowship whose
testimony is heard in every land (including countries
behind the iron and bamboo curtains) and on every
major mission field.
WHAT WE BELIEVE...
Our beliefs our fundamental, Evangelical and Pentecostal — see Evangel index page for summary of our

lost and the hurting. Jesus saw the multitude and had compassion on them. We
need to have the motivation to reach out
to people as we have never done before,
until they feel the touch of compassion.
The principal of this truth is the desperate need to touch people with the
compassion of Jesus. We must meet people where they are, and never, ever pass
them by!

time. Often the load will require selflessness, love, care and complete understanding. The words of a song made popular
some years ago graphically capture the
spirit of this touch of strength: "He 'aint
heavy, he's my brother.'
Mext month I will pursue this theme.
Meantime let me challenge you with this:
Are you prepared to reach out and touch
the modern leper — the AIDS sufferer —
with the same love, compassion and
strength that Jesus showed? I trust so,
and that your church, where you fellowship, is indeed ready to face AIDS.

The touch of strength
In Luke 15:5 we read: 'And when he has
found it, he lays it on his shoulders,
rejoicing.'
The scenario here is that of a lost sheep
being found as its master went out of his
way to find it. When the sheep was found,
he put it on his shoulders and then carried
it home rejoicing.
As Christians we need to be able to show
the shoulder of ministry. To 'shoulder'
speaks of responsibility — the responsibility of carrying the lost one to the fold
rejoicing. It speaks of doing things for the
lost until they become strong and are able
to look after themselves.
The shepherd could have said to this
sheep, 'Mow that you are found, you follow
me home.' But, no! He put the sheep on
his shoulders and carried it home
rejoicing.
Today's world desperately needs the
touch of strength that only Christ can give
— it needs the ability we have as Christians to see each other through difficult
and agonising times.
Often the load will be heavy. Often we
will need to carry that burden for some

Wonderful promises
However, this incredible Word of God
not only has the power to bring us to the
new birth and make us children of God, it
has the power and the capacity to make us
grow in grace and the knowledge of our
Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ — to
become strong in the Lord and the power
of His might.
In Joshua 1:7-9 there are some fascinating promises that are applicable to us
regarding the Word of God. God spoke to
Joshua, reminding him of the Word of the
Lord that had been revealed by Moses, and
said to him.
'Only be strong and very courageous; be
careful to do according to all the law which
Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn
from it to the right or to the left, so that you
may have success wherever you go. This book
of the law shall not depart from your mouth,
but you shall medidate on it day and night, so
that you may be careful to do according to all
that is written in it; for then you will make your
way prosperous, and then you will have success. Have 1 not commanded you? Be strong
and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.'
In this passage of scripture, there are
six great areas of victory and benefit that
God promises us through the right use of
His Word.
2. Success
Then God says to Joshua — adherence
to the Word of the Lord will cause you to
have success wherever you go. Some people seem to have the mistaken idea that
failure is honourable. It is not. Failure is a
disgrace. Here the promise of God's Word
is that He intends us to be successful. Of
course, we need to establish what success
is. Some people would equate success
with wealth or prominence, and experiences or opportunties that elevate one's ego.
True success is to find the will of God and
to do it.
The accomplishment of God's plan for
your life is true success, and God does not
intend nor expect you to fail. He intends
for you to find His plan for your life. He
intends for you to have the resources
necessary to accomplish His strategy for
your life.
In everything God wants you to do,
whether it be in career, at home, in your
areas of personal endeavour and achievement, or whether it be in your life as a
Christian, it is God's will that you should
not fail, but that you should succeed. The
Word of God declares that God causes us
to triumph in every place.5
In other words, failure is not an option
for the child of God. Sometimes we suffer
setbacks, and not always do things work
out the way we plan them. But if we have
our goals clearly set in God, and know
what God wants of us and are determined
to go towards those things, obeying the
Word of God, He will ensure our ultimate
success.
1. Prosperity
Firstly, He says that adherence to the
truth of God's Word will bring us to
prosperity. Mow this occurs in a number
of ways, not the least of which is that by
adherence to the truth that God has laid
out in His scriptures, we will avoid the

4. Courage
God says that another benefit of the
Word of God taking a central place in our
lives is that we will be filled with courage
— we become courageous people. We are
able to make bold decisions and stick to
them, because our life is strengthened by
the principles and teachings of the Word
of God.
In fact our faith is expanded because of
the support that God's Word gives to us.
We begin to understand that God is true to
His Word. By trusting in His integrity, we
are able to make decisions and see things
through. We are able to persist with great
courage because we are living beyond
ourselves in the power of God. God's Word
give us confidence that when we do His
will, He will stand with us to support us
and strengthen us.
The power of confession
Many years ago, I heard a little saying
that helped me immensely in my young
Christian life. It was —
'A Bible that's falling apart generally belongs to someone who isn't — and I know,
from personal experience, that to be true.
But, brothers and sisters, it is far more
important to have God's Word in our
hearts and in our mouths than it is to have
a copy of the holy scriptures in our house.
Out of our hearts and from our mouths,
then, will come that confession which will
make the written Word of God living truth,
not just mere doctrine. And, as we confess
that truth, we will indeed have 'miracles in
our mouths.'
In November's Evangel we will look
further at God's promises as outlined in
Joshua 1, and the power of confession.

HI
IS THE CHURCH READY FOR AIDS?
It's not possible today to open a
newspaper, or watch a television news
coverage, without hearing or reading
about AIDS — Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome — a fatal disease
now killing thousands of people
around the world! Even more sobering
is the prediction that AIDS will soon be
the killer of millions!
Disturbing facts
Fifty thousand Australians are now
believed to be suffering from AIDS! Health
authorities tell us that by 1990 — just
three years away — a quarter of a million
Australians will have the virus! Thirty million people worldwide now suffer from the
disease, and even as I write this article,
one new case every three minutes will be
diagnosed somewhere around the globe.
It is expected that by 1995, possibly one
quarter of the African population will be
suffering from AIDS. Africa now has an
AIDS carrier population estimated between five and ten million. In 1986,8% of
pregnant women attending prenatal clinics in Zaire were found to be infected. In
Kigali, Rwanda, 18% of blood donors were
HIV-positive. In Lusaka, Zambia, 33% of
men aged 30 to 35 were infected.
In Nov. '86, San Francisco's health
department reported a record 76 deaths
for the month, as well as 108 new cases,
bringing the city's overall AIDS tally to
2,654 cases, of whom 1,517 have died. Of
that tally, 84% were homosexual or bisexual men. Doctors now believe that up to
65% of the city's gay populace may now be
infected with the virus!
American health officials are on record
as saying that if the expected ravages of
the disease continue, the USA would be
bankrupt by the year 2000 because of the
cost needed to hospitalise and treat terminally ill AIDS patients. Simply put, the
economic system would not be able to
cope with the drain of funds needed to
help the dying!
All quite sobering and alarming statistics! But where does the AIDS epidemic
leave the church?
Challenge to the church
As I pondered these frightening statistics I began to ask myself whether our
churches were ready to face the AIDS crisis. Mo longer can we say that AIDS is a
disease sent by God as a judgement on
homosexuals. Sadly, history has always
shown that the innocent will suffer for the
guilty — now, innocent people are contracting AIDS through no fault of their
own. We have all been saddened by the
regular reports of people who have contracted AIDS through blood transfusions.
In my own state of Queensland three innocent babies recently died after they were
given infected blood at birth. A case of the
innocent suffering for the guilty!
AIDS is now a disease which is totally
ingrained within the heterosexual community. If this is the case, our churches
will soon be faced with the responsibility
of ministering to people suffering from
AIDS — not unlike the way Jesus ministered to those with leprosy — the
"untouchables' of His day.
I can see a close comparison between
AIDS and leprosy. Lepers were the unclean
people of Christ's day, a system which had
been established under Old Testament law
(Lev. 13:43-46; Num. 5:2). However, Jesus
touched the leper when no-one else would!
Look at the dramatic and wonderful story
of Matt. 8:1-4.
Picture the scenario: Jesus descends
from the mountain with a multitude following Him. Suddenly, the excitement of
the moment is broken with the chilling cry
'Unclean, Unclean!' A great murmer erupts
from the crowd as they draw back in horror searching for the leper in their midst.
The power of touch
And then suddenly, a voice, 'Lord, if You
will, You can make me clean.' And with the
voice, the sight of a pitiful figure, one
OCTOBER -1987
marred and marked by the ravages of the
disease, almost overcome by the creeping
scourge of leprosy! The words themselves
are eloquent, but the very source of the cry
brings qualities of appeal and passion.
And Jesus puts forth His hand and does
the impossible — He touches a leper! The
crowd gasp in disbelief and immediately
the leprosy is gone. In Jesus, the process
of death had become the process of life.
If we are to be committed t o ' . . . preach
the gospel to the poor; to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the
captives, to set at liberty them that are
bruised', we will encounter AIDS face to
face. If it hasn't already occurred, AIDS
sufferers will come into our church, faced
with the agony of death without peace,
and find Jesus as Lord and Saviour. It is
also inevitable that people will come to
Jesus in our midst, be gloriously saved,
and then find they have AIDS because of a
lifestyle they lived prior to coming to
Christ.
How will we minister to these people?
They will come to us terminally ill. Do we
turn our back on them and tell them they
are experiencing God's wrath? Have we
taken the time to better educate ourselves
to understand this horrific killer? Are our
congregations prepared to have fellowship with AIDS sufferers? These are very
important questions we must address if
we are to fulfil Christ's mandate of reaching a lost world. The question therefore
arises — is the church ready for AIDS?
Jesus must always be our model for
ministry. I believe we see in His life the
pattern for our ministry to the world — a
world which includes AIDS sufferers. Jesus
touched a hurting and dying world, and
therein lies the key — the power of touch.
Through His ministry and teachings
Jesus revealed at least seven different
'touches', or forms of personal ministry
where he reached people at their point of
need. Let us look at these areas, and see
their application to our ministry today.

'God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and
power, and He went around doing good and healing all
who were under the power of the devil' (Acts io:38).
Further, Paul informs us in Eph. 1:20-21 that today
Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father in
heavenly places far above all rule and authority,
power and dominion. That includes every demonic
force!
And so we see that God, who is on our side, is all
powerful in every area including every demonic force
that dares to come against you, your family, ministry and
church.
The Church has God's power
The second very powerful truth in respect to overcoming the devil is found in Eph. 1:22 — 'God placed all the
things under His (Jesus') feet and appointed Him to be
head over everything for the church, which is His body,
the fulness of Him who fills everything in every way.'
As you know, the Church is the body of Christ and
because He, the head, is in complete authority over
every satanic force, it is logical to expect that the Church
can also exercise great power over the works of the
devil and demons. What tremendous power and authority every local, united body of believers has when they
believe it, enter into it and use it!
The early church accepted and demonstrated this
power as they moved in spiritual warfare. For instance,
when Peter was locked in prison the local church united
in prayer against the men who were seeking to stop its
growth. What happened? God moved in and miraculously opened the prison doors, freeing Peter and causing great difficulties for King Herod. Acts 12:24 says that
the Word of God then continued to increase and spread
despite Herod's previous actions against the Church.
When it came to sickness, disease and demonic
oppression the early church exercised its enormous
power in Christ over all forms of satanic works. Multitudes, not only individuals were gloriously healed — see
Acts 3; 4:23-31; 5:12-16 and so on.
The 20th century church needs to sit up and take
notice of these and other New Testament examples.
Each local church is invested with the power of Jesus
Christ to unitedly stand against every organisation,
demonic force and men that would work against it. We
shouldn't just live in hope but in action!
Christians have God's power
Nottoo the impact of Eph. 2:6, 'God raised us up (from
our old ways of sin, failure and defeat and being under
the power of the devil) with Christ and seated us with
Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.'
This means that you, not just the Church as an institution, are seated with Jesus in the place of authority over
all principalities and powers. Therefore, in those times
when you may not be able to call the church or home
group together to pray, you can move in power and
boldly say, 'Satan, get your hands off this situation. I
rebuke you in Jesus' name. I have authority over you,
because you are under my feet too and you will not
touch me nor my family' (or whatever the case may be).
When you take that sort of authority with Holy Spirit
boldness you will find that Satan will indeed exit quickly
and you'll discover the truth of James 4:7 — 'Resist the
devil and he will flee from you.'
Be bold against your enemy
And so we understand from scripture that not only is
God all powerful over demonic forces, men in high places and even circumstances, if necessary, but the
Church is also. Equally important is the fact that you too
are in the place of authority and power.
Satanic attacks come from many different directions
and in various ways. Be daily on your guard, exercise
your own authority and Christ-given power and move
into spiritual warfare when the occasion requires it.
Remember — you're on the winning side and victory is
ours! Jesus declared it so in Luke 10:19, 'I have given
you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to
overcome all the power of the enemy.'
Use it!

I remember my first encounter with the
world of accounts, accountants and
accountability. It was in my first job, more
years ago then I care to remember. I was
given a blue pen and a red one and
informed that I could use those two
colours but must never use a green pen.
This, I thought, was unfortunate because green ink had just come out and I
like using it. So I compromised and mixed
brilliant blue with the green and concocted a turquoise colour. Alas, this still
got me into trouble as there was just too
much green in it and only (great emphasis
— only, only) accountants could use
green pens!
Young and inexperienced, I quickly
learned the letter of the law. Once a year, I
was informed, the accountants would
come in and with their green pens rule off
the last entries for the trading year. Not
even one more entry could be made, either
to add sales, to credit or make corrections. It was too late! Mow the books would
be checked and those who had made the
entries for the year would have to give an
account of matters.
And, sure enough, at the end of the
commercial year in came the accountants
with their little cases, green pens, suspicious looks and multitudes of queries.
Much later I would learn that accountants
aren't really bad folk and that auditing is a
necessary part of life. What was most
impressed upon this young innocent was
the fact of the importance of accountability.
Accountability!
Ultimately we are all always accountable to someone, whether in the business
world, church organisation or family life.
The great parable of Matt. 25 reminds us
plainly that in the final analysis we will all
stand before the Master when He returns
to His servants to settle accounts with
them (v. 19) and is looking for a return of
His investment and trust (v.27).
That is going to be an exciting day (or
night) when Jesus returns unexpectedly,
and so the age old cry still goes forth: Are
we ready? If you're a Christian then of
course you are in respect of your own
salvation. But what about your service? A
'heavenly green pen' will immediately rule
off the records in the book of your life to
that point and it will be too late to try to
gain extra time so that you can do more

in
for Jesus or make adjustments in your life,
temperament, ministry, relationships,
habits and so on.
Too late — the books are closed! A
sobering thought indeed. Jesus said in
John 9:4 that 'As long as it is day, we must
do the work of Him who sent me. Might is
coming when no one can work.'
What works have we been neglecting
that need to be operating within our
churches and personal lives today? What
matters are there that ought to be receiving our attention now, that we will regret
we didn't attend to if the Lord were to
suddenly return unexpectedly?
In this issue Reg Klimionok challenges
us in respect of reaching out to the neglected modern day leper, the AIDS victim,
Andrew Evans urges us to move in our
Christ-given power against evil spiritual
forces in the land, Lyle Peluso warns on
modern day witchcraft, David Cartledge
reminds us of the necessity of understanding, meditating on and confessing God's
Word, Christopher Jeyaratnam's miracle
testimony encourages us to persevere in
prayer whatever the circumstances.. . all
matters that need our daily attention as
we would serve Jesus.
There are also other matters such as the
question of holiness which has already
been highlighted several times this year in
this editorial page and elsewhere. Some
are still concerned that whilst we have
moved from the binding, legalistic letter
of the law, we may be displaying just too
much and too irreverant a freedom in the
Spirit.
Then there is the concern over the
recent shakings in the church in America
and elsewhere, the exposure of 'hi-tech'
suspect words of knowledge and fake miracles, financial and administration abuse
and incompetency, regrettable immoral
lapses, incredible visions and schemes
from God so-called, the continuing extremes of the prosperity, healing and
'Kingdom Mow' teachings, presumption
instead of faith, and failure of Christian
ethics.
In the above mentioned parable Jesus
spoke of the servants receiving talents to
be used immediately and wisely in the
Master's service. What talents, abilities
and spiritual gifts has Jesus granted you?
Are you using them wisely and increasing
their effectiveness? Does your lifestyle,
habits, language and actions reveal you as
a genuine servant of God? Are you, perhaps, like the 'useless' servant who buried
all and did nothing for his Master and
received the severest of rebukes? Are you
into anything unethical or doctrinally
suspect that harms our witness to the
world? I hope not, even as 1 trust in God
that I would never be.
Let us all be active in Christ's kingdom.
Let there be many great blue entries in the
record books of our lives that will speak
well of our wholehearted, genuine service
for Jesus. His blood — His 'red pen' — has
already erased our mistakes and sins; may
His 'green pen' never have to be ruled
across pages empty of entries of our
deeds. May we all we able to give a good
account of ourselves before the throne of
grace.
Have a great month, reconsidering the
'accounts of life'. / O i
