With its mission of meeting our
community’s end-of-life care needs
as its guiding force, Caldwell
Hospice and Palliative Care
continues to adapt to an everevolving healthcare environment.
Difficult decisions have been
required as the organization has
expanded and repositioned itself
for the future. And, in what is
perhaps the most important
measure of success for this or any
year, our hospice has remained
true to its commitment to provide
care to anyone who needed and
desired our service, regardless of
ability to pay.
Our first work station in the High
Country is up and running. There
is a need for quality hospice care
in Ashe, Avery and Watauga
counties, and we are working daily
to build trust in these communities
by reaching out to the medical
providers, residents, churches
and other groups about the
services we offer.
The debate over health care—who
will provide it and how it will be
funded—seems to intensify each
year, and hospice care from the
national to the state to the local
level has not been exempt from
the significant changes taking
place. Regulations and scrutiny
continue to increase. Some of this
additional oversight is necessary;
however, this added focus requires
more time and money, both of
which are limited.
While other communities around
the country are losing their
nonprofit hospices (65% of the
nation’s hospice providers are
for-profit), CHPC remains a leader
and example of what a community
can do. We do not necessarily like
all the change that has or is
coming, but we are adapting so we
can remain viable and strong for
the patients and families who need
us. Still, in the midst of change,
our community support has
remained steadfast and sure.
Our hospice and the community
is a true partnership.
CHPC is fortunate to have longterm dedication from employees,
volunteers and its board of
directors. The board will continue
to play a vital role in strategic
planning as we seek to continue
providing exceptional hospice care.
Caldwell Hospice has used a holistic
approach to end-of-life care in
serving the physical, emotional,
and spiritual needs of patients and
their families for more than three
decades, wherever they call home,
regardless of ability to pay. We are
grateful for the faithful support we
have received from the community,
and we remain unwavering in our
commitment to provide quality
end-of-life care.

Scott Brown, City of Lenoir, Chief of Police; Marion Hall, CPA and business
advisor; Mack Jarvis, Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church Hudson; and
Wongalee Thomas, Blue Ridge Electric. Their terms began in July 2015.

development of both core and

Caldwell Hospice a leader in its

has been renamed “AIM: Advanced
Illness Management”—a designation
that better communicates the
purpose of this work with the
chronically and/or seriously ill.
We are pursuing a Special Needs
Petition from the state to convert
three residential beds to general
inpatient beds through the
Certificate of Need process, a
decision that will help us continue
to provide care regardless of ability
to pay.
High Country Expansion
What began as discussions with
Appalachian Regional Healthcare
System (ARHS) has culminated in
the opening of a “work station” to
serve Ashe, Avery and Watauga
counties. The expansion is part of a
collaborative partnership to provide
palliative and hospice care to
residents of the High Country.

Enhanced Services
CHPC continues to strengthen
its enhanced services to provide
quality end-of-life care to improve
the daily lives of patients, but for
which there is no reimbursement.
These services provide patients
with an added level of comfort
and expertise.
Specialized training for working with
dementia patients has been a focus
for us over the last year. Staff and
volunteers spent many hours
learning to conduct the Virtual
Dementia Tour®(VDT), which allows
a person to “walk in the shoes” of
a person experiencing dementia
for a short time. Those with this
training are now using it to conduct
workshops for others. In addition,
staff and volunteers attended
expert training on dealing with
behavioral and environmental
elements of care. These specialized
trainings allow us to better care for
patients with dementia as well as
educate patients’ families on ways

difficult to say and needs a lot
of explanation. AIM: Advanced
Illness Management more directly
communicates that we are here to
help patients and families manage
the difficulties of living with
advanced illness.

Continuing Our
Work and Commitment
CHPC serves about 750 patients a
year, with the majority of care given
in the home. In 2013, Caldwell
ranked 2nd (Forlines PCU) and 5th
(Stevens PCU) for the highest
patient care unit occupancy rates
in North Carolina. To better meet
community needs, CHPC applied for
a Certificate of Need (CON) to
convert three residential beds to
general inpatient beds at the Forlines
Patient Care Unit and the Jack &
Shirley Robbins Center in Hudson.
Our bereavement care and volunteer
services programs continue to
support patients/families and
strengthen ties in the community.
Ashewood Grief and Counseling
Services maintains contact with and
offers support to bereaved family
members for at least 13 months
following a hospice patient’s death.
Services are available, also, to
anyone in the community who
needs them. The latest statistics
show bereavement support visits
were provided to 2,048 patients and
families through Ashewood Grief
and Counseling Services in a single
year; a full complement of support
groups, educational trainings and
other services were made available.
Volunteers continue to be an
integral part of CHPC, providing
nearly 14,000 hours of service a
year. Volunteer opportunities are
available for teens through adults.
As a medical specialty, palliative
care—known as “comfort care” in
lay terms—is for people with
serious illnesses. Whatever the
diagnosis or stage of illness, the
goal is to relieve symptoms, pain
and stress related to the illness so
the patient has a better quality of
life. Palliative care can be provided
alongside curative treatments and
is appropriate for care at any age
and at any stage of illness.
CHPC participated in a home-based
palliative care project for specially
identified Medicare recipients.
The project targeted High Country
patients who experienced a
significant increase in medical
costs or emergency department
and/or hospital visits. The goal was
for patients to feel better, achieve
more of their activities of daily
living and have fewer ER visits.
