‘Saturday Night
Live’ marks a
milestone

Seth Meyers is ready for a big party that the
whole country also can attend.
Actually, “Saturday Night Live” has been celebrating its 40th anniversary since the late-night
staple’s season began last September on NBC.
The network will televise the official bash as a
live, three-hour special Sunday, Feb. 15 – with
many cast members from the past four decades
expected to return, and classic sketches spanning performers from John Belushi, Dan
Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman to Chris Rock, David Spade, Mike Myers,
Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell and current “Tonight Show” star Jimmy Fallon.
Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake,
Paul Simon and Kanye West are slated to provide music. Also on hand will be such past
“SNL” guest hosts as Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks,
Christopher Walken, Robert De Niro, Jim Carrey, Melissa McCarthy and Betty White.
The host of the weeknight “Late Night With Seth
Meyers” spent 13 seasons in the “SNL” ensemble of players, nine of them also as the show’s
head writer, and eight as an anchor of the
“Weekend Update” segment. He reflects, “I keep
saying to Lorne (Michaels, executive producer of
both shows), ‘I worry that when it’s the one-year
anniversary of ”Late Night“ (which comes up
Feb. 24), it’s not going to get half the press.”’
“SNL” long has been one of television’s most
scrutinized shows each week – for the relevance
and effectiveness of its humor – and Meyers reflects, “I think one of the reasons the show has

maintained its vitality all these years is that
Lorne puts great faith in his writers. He doesn’t
want head writers who rewrite things to make
themselves the voice of the show, he wants
head writers who celebrate how every writer is
different. I think that’s why you can put on a 90minute sketch show and you know there are
things that came from different minds. No one
mind could come up with all of that.”
Meyers looks back fondly on his “SNL” tenure in
large part for its “incredible influx of talent, Andy
(Samberg) and Jason (Sudeikis) and Bill
(Hader) and Kristin (Wiig). At that time, people
like Kenan (Thompson) and Fred (Armisen, now
Meyers’ bandleader on his weeknight show) and
Will (Forte) hadn’t been around that long, either.
“It was such an exciting time to be on the show,
because we had a really small cast and really
small writing staff,” adds Meyers. “Because of
that, we got to make all our mistakes on the
show and on the air, and I think you learn so
much more from those mistakes than from not
getting to produce your work.”
While he’s looking forward to the big reunion
that the “SNL” 40th anniversary event will be,
Meyers notes, “I would think at this point, there
are very few (former cast members) left that I
haven’t crossed paths with to some degree.
Lorne kind of figured out how he wanted the
show to work from about the sixth week, and
he’s kept it pretty consistent – so even though
you weren’t on it at the same time, in a weird
way, you share memories with people.”

Bayonne's Turnpike Interchange
to be Reconstructed
Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that Bayonne officials have
started to hold a regular series of meetings with contractors for
the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The two sides will update
each other on issues related to the reconstruction of the Turnpike’s
14A Toll Plaza. That construction is expected to begin in the next
few weeks. Pre-construction work has begun. Mayor Davis said,
“The City of Bayonne welcomes the opportunity to meet regularly
with the 14A project representatives. We want to minimize the
impact of construction on residents and motorists alike. Since the
reconstruction of the Bayonne Bridge will be continuing at the
same time as the Turnpike work, we want to take all possible steps
to keep traffic flowing in our community. The regular meetings
will provide an opportunity for us to raise our residents’ concerns
about the 14A project.”
The newly reconfigured toll plaza will have several new features. A new lane will be added to each side of the toll plaza for
a new total of thirteen lanes. A roundabout (similar to a traffic
circle) will be constructed south of the interchange near 51st and
52nd Streets. That roundabout will pick up traffic entering from
53rd Street, route it south, and then feed it into the Turnpike en-
trance. A new connector bridge between
the Turnpike and Route 440 will be in
place by 2017. A new ramp will guide
traffic to the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor
(the former Military Ocean Terminal).
The entire project is expected to take from
2015 to 2018 to complete.
During construction, the Turnpike has
pledged to keep traffic lanes open during
peak driving hours. Three temporary detours will be established during the project.
The first detour will involve ten individual nighttime closures for
Frontage Road, which comes off from the Route 440 Connector
north of 58th Street. The first nighttime closing could come as
early as next month. The second detour will involve the eastbound side of East 53rd Street between Broadway and Avenue E.
That detour will last for six months. The third detour will involve
the connector road and bridge between Route 440 and the Turnpike. That detour will be needed for one weekend.
A project website will be up and running within the next few
weeks. It will contain construction updates, frequently asked
questions, photos, and contact information. A 14A construction
hotline will also be established shortly.

The success of “Two and a Half Men” speaks for
itself, given the CBS sitcom’s 12 seasons and its

Conchata Ferrell’s last stand as sassy housekeeper Berta.
“I think we’re going to have a finale that you’ll be
very, very pleased with,” says executive producer and co-creator Chuck Lorre, who’s been
doing his best to keep the details of it under
wraps. He adds “it would be inappropriate here
to not acknowledge the extraordinary success
we had with Charlie and how grateful I am – and
we all are – to his contribution, and there’s nothing but good feelings for the eight-and-a-half
years we worked together.
“But how to wrap the show up, it’s tricky,” adds
Lorre, “it’s a sticky wicket. In a way, the show
morphed into something else entirely for the last
four years, and it’s something we love, and we
want to honor both. So, how to honor both has
been the challenge of this finale. And the other
challenge is how to get people watching it without telling them what it is. ”
Cryer maintains he has no clue to “Two and a
Half Men’s” staying power. “I actually have spent

some time with the writers this year,” he reports,
“and it’s been really fun. I will try to figure out
how Chuck is going to react to whatever they’re
presenting, and I’m almost never right, so I don’t
know exactly what it is. Early on, they discovered it was funny for me to be naked, and that
has carried us all quite a ways, apparently.”
Kutcher reasons, however, that Lorre’s shows
work because they involve “families that are just
like yours. And I think that Chuck works with
people that understand that that works, and
that’s extraordinarily relatable. Even if it’s two
straight guys acting like gay guys so they can
adopt a kid (the final-season premise of ‘Two
and a Half Men’), that’s a family. It’s all built
around really broken, messed-up families ... and
if you have one, you know what one’s like, and
you can really relate to it and it’s fun to laugh at.
Because, ultimately, you sit at home and you
laugh at yourself.”
Destined to continue being seen in widely syndicated repeats, “Two and a Half Men” began a
CBS comedy empire for Chuck Lorre Productions that now also encompasses “The Big Bang
Theory,” “Mike & Molly” and “Mom.” Lorre acknowledges that “it all started with ‘Two and a
Half Men,’ and I just wanted to state for the
record that this doesn’t happen – none of this
happens – had that show not been such a phenomenal success.”

What should viewers expect from Wednesday’s (Feb. 18) series finale of “The Mentalist”?
I was very worried about how we would be able to tie up the show
in a respectful way, and also give the fans something that made
their seven years earned. We wanted to give them something
very special, and there’s a lot of expectation. There was a lot of
darkness on the show with the Red John story line and all, but I
think this is going to leave them with an optimistic, great taste in
their mouths.
While the characters’ futures are still a little ambiguous, it ties it up
in a way where there’s a lot of hope – and it’s funny, and it’s romantic, and it’s satiating. There’s nothing more frustrating than
staying with something for seven years, only for it to give you an
ambiguous ending. It’s sort of like “The Mentalist” doing romantic
comedy, and it’s really fun to watch.
you’re also renowned in the independent-film world, but
after seven seasons on “The Mentalist” and the year you did
on “Prison Break,” would you consider series work again?
Absolutely! I can’t say that I’d be signing up right away for something that might last for years, because it’s really exhausting and I
think you need to refuel and I certainly don’t have any interest in
doing another procedural ... but I love what I do. I love going to
work.
Television has changed so much, it’s become like the new independent-film world. Something like “Fargo” or “Togetherness” is
just amazing, and I would love to do something like that. I’d also
love to do more little movies, where you feel like you’re with a
merry band of circus folks and you’re pushing a rock up a hill and
you’re in it together.

Where are the heroes?
The Internet slays them

“ALWAyS REMEMBER others may hate
you, but those who hate you don’t win unless
you hate them. And then you destroy yourself.” - Richard Nixon
The Internet social media “dictator” where everybody has a chance to say anything they like - has left us with very few heroes. And the instantaneous negative
response is often overwhelming.
I have been vastly interested by the total
tearing down of NBC’s Brian Williams. I felt
that the burgeoning Facebook, Twitter, New
york Post and other TV networks would
have this newsman hung in public without a
trial, right there for all to see in Rockefeller
Center. That is, if we were not such devout
law and order human beings.
At the very least, Brian would not be tortured but merely killed for his sins if John Q.
Public has its say. Self-confession? Mea
culpa? Not good enough for all of us looking
on. (And I admit, as a former gossip columnist turned rueful philosopher, I have done
my share of public accusation, except, in the
past, as a mere single voice, I don’t think I
ever did much damage.)
So, we are virtually left with no heroes
anymore and where can we turn next? Television, that baby sitter of millions, in all its
old and new forms, is still operating in a
manner of speaking, no matter what the Internet generation has done to it.
Brian Williams’ trauma should be a wakeup call to every anchor and newsperson who
so desperately seeks attention as “more” than
a mere reader of news. We need the news.
We have enough celebrities.
BUT I WANT to suggest a hero that you
probably may not have thought of on Sunday
mornings because you are sound asleep, too
hung over to care, dressing for church, or
whatever you consider formal worship (perhaps it’s only sitting down to a ready-made
pancake that springs out of its box for you
and the kids.) Or, you are up already getting
ready for a command performance at your
mother-in-law’s house. Maybe you are waiting for your pet to do something special to
make you a star!
Well, I am here to tell you that for all its
failings (like losing Edward R. Murrow, Bill
Paley, Mike Wallace, Don Hewitt and the
like) CBS is still offering a real hero to us in
the guise of a modest man named Charles
Osgood. He is there every Sunday morning.
(This leaves you plenty of time to try to get
the cat and dog to waltz together for a short
shot to post on Twitter, or to think of something more bizarre for them to do instead of
- god forbid - just being pets!)
It may surprise you, but “CBS Sunday
Morning” has the highest rating for a news
program with 6 million viewers each week.
And this show, which gives us hope, is up 3
percent in viewership from last year. go figure. It is a must-see for disgruntled seekers
of something laughably called “class,” in this
benighted modern era.
Against all these “progressive” odds, Osgood and his producers have yet to fumble
the ball.
Osgood is sometimes seen leaning on a
piano (he is actually an accomplished pianist) or tentatively touching the back of a
chair for balance, as any respectable,
thoughtful 80-year-old might do. But he offers culture, glamour and weird and unusual
understated stories that embrace the mind
and heart.
Long may Charles Osgood wave!
Citizens of the world, go right on with your
wars and uprisings and revolutions that end
in dictatorships. Kill your idols when they
make a public misstep. Ignore “forgive and
forget” and giving second chances.
I’ll just stick with Charlie Osgood and
hope he doesn’t have a lie or a human characteristic to bring him down!
I’m late covering a fashion event that I DO
care about and it’s a double whammy!
This is the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Museum opening of “yves St. Laurent
and Halston: Fashioning the 70s,” which is
a smash hit, going on until April 18. Anybody who yearns to make it in fashion
should see this, as well as the FIT Museum’s
other offering “Faking It,” highlighting originals, copies and counterfeits. This runs until
April 25.
I don’t know how Dr. Valerie Steele can
top these two shows, which can be seen at
the easy-to-get-to address of 7th Avenue and
27th Street in Manhattan.
More fashion! I was happy to learn of a
coming exhibition titled “Lauren Bacall: The
Look.” (When Betty Bacall gave you the
look, you didn’t forget it! One of my favorite
memories is that every time I encountered
this star, she shouted, “Liz, am I speaking to
you?!”) The Fashion Institute of Technology
will display Miss Bacall’s items from March
3 to April 4.
While at the yves St. Laurent and Halston
show, my pal, the archaeologist Iris Love,
who also dabbles in the newfound science of
photography, snapped a photo of a dress designed by the late gianni Versace with images of Marilyn Monroe all over it. This
dress was not part of the exhibit, but it
caught Miss Love’s eye. (Versace made one
of these Monroe frocks for Elizabeth Taylor!
It was auctioned off at Christie’s when Taylor’s personal items were on the block. She
never wore it. Surprised?)
How I miss the eclectic collector Versace.
I was visiting his house in South Beach,
Florida, shortly before he was killed by a
madman. It’s nice of FIT to bring him back
and show us some of his unusual ideas of
fashion fun - fun we could use right now!

Indulge yourselves with a
luxurious yet light dessert

So many luxurious yet lean desserts
start with fresh fruit, which provides
great sources of flavor while also being
high in fiber, great sources of vitamins,
and virtually fat-free; and the natural
sweetness of fruit doesn’t jolt your system with as much sugar as you’ll find in
processed treats.
With that in mind, I think souffles make
a perfect dessert. My recipe for spectacular-looking, delicious Raspberry Souffles amazingly contains only 127 calories
per serving, with just 12 percent of those
from fat. And if you sprinkle in just a
small amount of semisweet chocolate
chips, you’ll add only 25 more calories
(including 14 fat calories) per serving which still works out to a modest 19 percent of calories from fat.
As you’ll note, the recipe here actually
yields four servings, because it becomes
difficult to whip the egg whites properly
if you make fewer portions. That doesn’t
create any problems, really, because I
know that at least some of you will be
making this for the entire family. If the
dessert is just for two, however, you can
loosely cover a pair of the uncooked
souffles by inverting large bowls over
them and refrigerating them overnight, to
bake the next day.
RASPBERRY AND CHOCOLATE
CHIP SOUFFLÉS WITH FRESH
RASPBERRY SAUCE
Makes 4 souffles
RASPBERRY SOUFFLÉS:
1-1/2 cups (375 ml) fresh raspberries
3 tablespoons sugar, plus
1/2 tablespoon for coating ramekins
3/4 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

2 large cage-free egg whites, at room
temperature
Pinch of cream of tartar
2 tablespoons semisweet chocolate
chips
RASPBERRY SAUCE:
1 cup (250 ml) fresh raspberries
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
For the Raspberry Souffles, in a small
saucepan combine half of the raspberries,
1 tablespoon of the sugar, the lemon juice
and the vinegar. Bring to a boil over
medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally,
until the mixture has a jam-like consistency, about 4 minutes. Strain through a
fine-meshed sieve over a heatproof bowl,
pressing it through with a rubber spatula.
Discard the solids from the sieve. Set
aside to cool to room temperature.
Measure out 1/4 cup (60 ml) of this
mixture and transfer to a large bowl, leaving the rest in the pan. Set aside.
Position a rack in the lowest level of the
oven. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
(220 degrees C).
With the butter, coat the insides of four
1/2-cup (125-ml) ramekins. Lightly dust
with the 1/2 tablespoon sugar. Place the

ramekins on a baking tray.
Divide half of the remaining raspberries
for the souffles among the ramekins.
Drizzle the raspberry sauce left in the pan
evenly over the raspberries in the
ramekins.
Using a stand mixer with the wire whip,
or a clean mixing bowl with a hand
mixer, beat the egg whites at low speed
until foamy, about 1 minute. Add the
cream of tartar and continue beating 1
minute longer. Increase the speed to
medium and, while beating, slowly sprinkle in the remaining 2 tablespoons sugar.
Continue beating until the whites form
firm peaks that stand up when the beaters
are lifted out.
With a wire whisk, gently stir about a
third of the egg whites into the reserved
1/4 cup (60 ml) of raspberry sauce until
combined. Then, with the whisk, fold in
the remaining egg whites. Sprinkle in the
chocolate chips and gently fold them in
with a rubber spatula. Fold in the remaining reserved whole raspberries.
Spoon the egg white mixture into the
prepared ramekins, mounding it in peaks.
Bake until well puffed and dark golden,
7 to 10 minutes.
While the souffles are baking, make the
Raspberry Sauce. In a small, nonreactive
saucepan, combine the raspberries, sugar
and lemon juice. Cook over medium
heat, stirring occasionally, until the
berries have given up their juices, about
3 minutes. Bring to a boil and continue
cooking, stirring frequently, until syrupy,
about 2 minutes longer. Strain through a
fine-mesh sieve over a heatproof bowl,
pressing with a rubber spatula and discarding the solids.
As soon as the souffles are done, transfer each ramekin to individual plates and
serve immediately. At the table, use a
spoon to break open the top of the souffle, spooning the sauce inside.
