September 2015 - Country Club of Paducah
Value Tradition Family Quality Board of Directors Kurt Averill Do not let the fact that fall is here, kids are back in school and you have to be two places at once, discourage you from using YOUR Country Club. The weather is perfect, the pool is still open, the gym is open (24 hours by the way), our restaurant keeps getting better and better, the golf course has never looked better, it’s a perfect time for tennis and quite frankly, it’s one of the very best times to be at the Club. I hope you take advantage before old man winter creeps in. Kurt Averill, President We had a board meeting Tuesday night, August 25th and all departments (golf, membership, tennis, house, greens and finance) were running smoothly and moving in a positive direction. Be sure to contact a committee member or committee chair if you have any ideas that can help the club continue its positive momentum. Member Milestone Anniversaries in September Mr. Bill and Ginger Usher Mr. Stan and Missy Eckenberg 55 years 25 years Mr. Gary and Lisa Zakutney Mr. Eric and Amy Small President Finance Chair [email protected] Adam Chustz Vice President/ President Elect Tennis Chair [email protected] Mark Chambers Membership Chair mark@ chambersroofingky.com Dave Massey House & Pool Chair [email protected] Tommy Owen Golf Chair [email protected] Jason Siener Greens Chair [email protected] The Country Club of Paducah family would like to extend deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Russell Ogden III. He had been a member since 2011. 15 years 10 years “Success” is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose or the favorable termination of attempts or endeavors. That being the case, I think we can all agree that the 2nd Annual Dueling Pianos event held this past Saturday was not only a success, but a tremendous success. I’m not sure if the huge support and attendance came from the stars being aligned or finding the one Saturday night of the summer that no one had other plans but I do know it wouldn’t have been such a success without you and for that I am grateful. After holding our first Dueling Pianos event last July, we quickly realized the opportunity presented itself to make this our major event of the summer. Fantastic food, great entertainment and an unparalleled level of camaraderie were all with us on Saturday. I think it’s safe to say, we have found success in this event and a new tradition is now in place at the Country Club of Paducah. One of the many great things you get from your membership in a private club is a level of camaraderie among people you may not have otherwise known or associated with in your daily life. Club membership presents the unique opportunity to gather with others who share the same hobbies, interests and / or causes they believe in. Finding others in this manner not only forms new friendships but it ultimately increases the value and overall satisfaction you get with your membership. According to David Denton (who shared this idea with us) , the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) developed a program Timothy R. Straley General Manager / COO in 2004 entitled “Clubs within a Club” and to date have created 18 different member run clubs within their own club. This is something we would like to establish here at our Club as well. To that end, we are looking for members who are interested in developing a “club within a club” that coincides with their interests and hobbies. We would work together to help you get the club up and running and then be here to support your meetings and activities when planned. I am certain there are contingents of members that enjoy hunting, boating, bourbon, travel or the like that would benefit of from this type of offering so please let Katie or me know if you are interested in working on this with us. I realize we are at the point in the year where activity around the Club begins to decline however I would encourage everyone to take advantage of and participate in all that is planned for the remainder of the year. There is a direct correlation that can be made between your level of participation and the value of your membership so please plan to join us and have some fun. It’s not a party until you get there! A special Thank You from the Board of Directors to the following members for hosting or sponsoring an event at the Club in August Bill Ragland Private Event Mary Katz Private Event Joe Framptom Paducah Bank Kurt Averill Domino’s Adam Chustz Edward Jones Dr. Charles Ransler 1st Investors Mardie Herndon Paducah Bank Ana Sredl Renee Tilley Luncheon Club Keith Wilke Banterra Bank Stan Eckenberg CSI Mary Hunter Hancock Private Event Heath Bowling Edward Jones Suzanne Farmer Private Event Scott Wicenski Private Event Sue Homra Private Event Elizabeth Edwards Private Event Nicole Turnbo Private Event The kids are back in school and summer has begun to wind down. We will still have the beautiful homegrown tomatoes throughout most of September as long as the weather stays warm. The fresh okra is now available so you can look forward to seeing these on our seasonal insert menus very soon. There is much going on in the month of September including the annual Member/Guest Tournament as well as several golf outings. We hope you will all join us for our “End-of-Summer Labor Day Bash” on Monday, September 7th. We will have great food with plenty of pool festivities…fun for all! We also hope to see you on Friday, September 18th for our Seafood Dinner Buffet….Lobster…need I say more? BBQ & Michael Harlow, Executive Chef Wine Pairings on Wednesday, September 23rd…Why not? These events are always fun for us in the kitchen and promise not to disappoint. We will be looking to change the lunch and dinner menus in mid-October to enhance our “Fall Flavors” moving into the holiday season. We have enjoyed yet another wonderful summer here at Country Club of Paducah and look forward to seeing you very soon. Graves, Katie Banquet & Events Manager If you’re reading this, it can mean only one thing… you survived our 2nd annual Summer Bash with DUELING PIANOS! Thanks to all 270+ of you that joined us for an evening of incredible food, amazing entertainment, and the greatest of company! I would also like to thank our great serving and kitchen staff here at the Club…without them, none of the events that you enjoy would be possible. I recently had the opportunity to travel to Arizona for the Association of Club Catering Professionals National Conference. We had three days full of seminars, brainstorming sessions, and even met with experts of the industry. What I found extremely interesting was how our Club here in this little corner of Western Kentucky measures up to the multi-billion dollar clubs in L.A. and New York! You should all be very proud to know that WE are on par with some of the biggest trends around the country, and it is due in huge part to Tim’s innovative ideas and leadership, and Chef’s exciting passion for bringing new food to the table constantly. That being said, we are all committed to making sure that each time you walk through our doors for an event, it truly is an experience to share with others, with memories and traditions to hold on to for years to come. Speaking of events…we have several fun evenings coming up for your consideration. To kick off BBQ on the River weekend, we have our “Barbecue FaceOff Wine Event” pairing barbecued items with different wines, proving that barbecue is not just for beer anymore! In October, we’re bringing back Clubfavorite events, Men’s Stag Wild Game and Bourbon Dinner and Comedy Night. Check out our included flyers for details, but as always, please contact me for reservations via phone, email, or our Club App! Thanks again for your continued support, and we hope to see you out here soon! We are definitely feeling the love for the Club this past month! I see more and more of you coming out for lunch, dinner or cocktails and appetizers on the patio during this beautiful weather we have had lately! Let’s not break the streak! Chef has been coming up with some wonderful Insert Specials that are just mouthwatering and to satisfy your thirst, ask your server about our great new tasty drink specials. Kristie Ison, Dining Room Manager Did you know that one of the most popular buffets is coming to you in September? Mark your calendars now and call me today to make reservations for this almost always sold out event, Seafood Buffet on Friday September 18th! I look forward to many more busy nights to come! School is back in session and even though it is still officially summer, we have had some fall like weather that has been perfect for tennis. Taking advantage of the good weather were some ladies competing in the USTA KY State Tri-Level Tournament held in Paducah this year. Staci Averill, Betty Higdon, Toni Greene and Amy Anderson were part of the 3.5 – 4.5 State Championship team. These ladies will be travelling to Jackson, MS on October 16-18 to compete in the Southern Championships with a chance to advance to the National Tournament. Congratulations Ladies and good luck. I also want to recognize Sophia Shiben. You won’t see Sophia practicing at the Country Club of Paducah this fall. Sophia was invited to train at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida. Sophia was an integral part of the McCracken County Mustang’s State Team Tennis Championship in 2015 and also added a Regional Doubles Championship to her spring accomplishments. Sophia and her older brother Vincent have been very successful not only on the court but also in the classroom. Congratulations to Sophia on her invitation and acceptance to train at a world class academy. Great opportunity for a world class young lady. Chris Dallas, Tennis Director youngster that would like to begin playing tennis, keep playing tennis or just give it a try, please contact the pro shop to sign up or we can give you all the information you need over the phone or via e-mail. Back by popular demand and the fact that kids are in school now, Wednesday morning Cardio Tennis will start again on September 9 from 9:00 to 10:00. Many have requested it and the time is here to start it up again. Feel free to drop in and give it a try. It’s always helpful if you call ahead so we know about what our numbers will be. Come out and give this multi-level, heart pumping clinic a try. We are currently putting the final touches on our October 30-31, Breast Cancer Awareness Member-Guest Doubles Tournament. This event last year was a major success. We hope to increase the participation as well as the level of fun this year. Start finding your partners and practicing for what will be a fun filled Friday evening and Saturday of social tennis and competitive tennis. Late summer is a great time to play tennis, learn tennis or restart your tennis playing habits. If we can be of any service helping find you a clinic, lesson or just a group to play with please contact the Tennis Pro Shop at 554-7065. Future tennis players are being molded in our Fall Junior Christina, Kenny, Haley and I are here to help you get into Clinics. Clinics are going on currently but you can always or back into the game as easy as possible. join a session, even after it has begun. If you have a See you at the courts. This event will include snacks and is only $20.00 RSVP by Sept. 24th to: [email protected] Fall time is approaching, and the weather is perfect for golf, but most importantly, the golf course is green and doing well! The grounds crew works hard keeping the course in great condition for the membership. With Zoysia being a warm weather grass, the fairways have greened up and grown in very well over the summer months.. In order to sustain top quality course conditions, we ask that all members respect the new golf cart rules. The golf cart rules state that golf carts should enter and exit the cart paths at 90° to your ball. After hitting your shot, return to the cart path at 90° or proceed thru the fairway to your next shot. Please return to the cart path at 90° prior to reaching the green at about 30 yards. Reminder! Immediate family members of any member with golfing privileges will be allowed to play golf with the member, at a reduced cost for cart and greens fee. If the immediate family members resides within a 50 mile radius they will only be allowed to play 3 rounds per year at this rate and for those that reside beyond 50 miles, there is no limitation on the number of rounds they are allowed to play. We would like to acknowledge Rocco Zakutney, River Stilley, and the Paducah All-Star PGA Junior League team for winning the Kentucky PGA Junior League State Finals! They will advance to Regionals in Sevierville, Tennessee, on September 26th and 27th. They will be playing against three other states: North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. We wish them the best of luck! Jason Stilley, PGA Golf Professional Just a reminder that the golf shop will be closed all day on Mondays however golf course will open at 1:00 with all play starting on Hole 1. There have been a few hot and dry days but more often it has been pleasant if a little on the dry side. After July, a little dry has been fine. The country is starting to come under the influence of an “El Nino” pattern, but the early forecasts for fall/winter are wide spread across the board. Hurricanes are just starting to appear in the east, but the weather pattern has not yet been favorable for their development. Summer did not turn out exactly as predicted so it is best to just wait for it to happen. The zoysia and bermuda continue to improve. Staff has aerated tees, fairways and some roughs and fertilized them. Fairways continue to receive herbicide applications that favor the zoysia over the bermuda. The collars have received 2 herbicide applications and 2 hand sprayer applications for weeds. All in all the turf is going into fall in good condition. There are some washed out areas in the rough that need sodding, and we hope to get to them before late fall. The biggest change this fall will be the overseeding of all the rough. This will start on September 22nd. Where the rough is mostly bermuda, a blend of ryegrass will be used. In areas with fescue, a blend of cool season grass will be seeded. The greens did suffer some damage during July related to not only the weather stress but also some root disease. The fertilizer programs were changed to reflect the needs of the grass and seed was added during the early August venting. All this has helped, yet some areas are still lagging behind. In order to take advantage of September’s usually great growing weather, the greens will be aerated on September 1st and 2nd. (You Larry Hantle, CGCS should have received an email about this program). Hopefully the recovery period will be short (within a week) and the greens will fully cover by fall. September is a busy golfing month with numerous outings and tournaments yet we still hope to continue to make improvements. The green committee decided to take down only dead trees and grind stumps and it should be done in the month. Besides seeding of the rough, staff will preparing the unseeded areas around greens, tees, and bunkers for winter with herbicides to keep them clean. Each year an agronomist from the USGA Green Section visits the course and does a half day tour with club officials. He answers all questions and recommends solutions to the issues of the day. His full report is posted on the club website and app for your reading enjoyment. Please contact me if you have any questions about it. Lastly on a sad but happy note, our second assistant Adam Hunerkoch will be leaving after greens aeration. He is going to work at EEI which in terms of compensation is a no brainer for him. Adam has been a great addition to our staff the last 5+ years and he will be missed. He never shied away from any project and his input contributed in many ways to the success of the operation. His leaving will take some adjusting until we choose our next path to follow in terms of staffing. Autumn is nearly here. The best golfing days are ahead and we look forward to seeing you on the course.
