A RT L EAGUE N OTES
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Karen Waite
Once again with the combined efforts
and hard work of all your Board members and our Executive Director, Sherri
Harris, the Art League has pulled together a season filled with new and exciting
shows, lectures, and workshops.
As we are continually striving to
bring the community new and innovative
artistic interpretations, we hope you will
find this year is no exception. We have
managed to arrange two spectacular exhibits to add to our show schedule: to end
2013, we have an exhibit of the Florida
Highwaymen kicked off with a lecture by
author and documentary photographer,
Gary Monroe; followed by the launch of
2014 with works from world-renowned
black and white fine arts photographer,
Clyde Butcher.
I’ve mentioned only a sampling of
what is to come this season. Read on and
you will see much more - the Newsletter
speaks for itself. Browse through it with
your highlighter pen and I’m sure you
will agree that without a doubt, the Art
League continues to enhance Ocean
Reef’s “unique way of life.”
I look forward to seeing all of you
soon, and to a wonderful and enlightening Art League season.
FROM THE EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
Sherri Harris
Join the Lucky Members of the Art
League Now!
Act now to renew or initiate your
membership. Don’t take a chance of a forgetful senior moment or two; act now, to
get the full benefits of membership.
There are classes galore in every form
of creative arts and crafts you can imagine, and if you find one that is missing
that you’d like, Sherri can make that happen too.
But if you don’t consider yourself
creative, aww, join anyway. You might
surprise yourself in some of the group
projects or the pride of just being a
supporting “Member of the Arts”. You
don’t have to be creative to enjoy an art
league. And we have constantly changing
shows... with wine and good company to
kick them off.
For the lucky long-time members,
think of some deprived friend who has
yet to sample Art League membership.
Give them a boost by introducing them
as new members.
Welcome back to Ocean Reef and of
course welcome back to the amazing Art
League!
Did you know that for 37 years, the
Art League has been active in providing
the Ocean Reef Community with a creative space to explore many other activities beyond golf, tennis, fishing etc.?
The Art League, with its well-connected network of instructors, exhibitors and
member artists have prided themselves
for bringing such a diverse offering of art
education to the Ocean Reef Community.
Where else can you arrive in November,
park your car and never get back in it
until May all the while never missing a
thing?
We are kicking off yet another exciting season with new exhibiting artists,
instructors and hopefully lots of new
member faces. We also welcome back
our devoted member artists and look
forward to seeing you in your regular
classes and really hope to see you reach
out for something new and scary. Invite a
friend to explore with you.
With the New Works Show being
moved to January 2014, you should have
ample time to create your masterpiece to
enter. We expect that this season’s entry
list will pinnacle all others.
PLEASE JOIN US AND JOIN THE FUN!

• Should you cancel a class/workshop or trip 15 to 8 days out, you will only be
charged half of the fee.
• You will be charged the total fee if you cancel 7 days or less from the time of the
scheduled event.
• You will not be charged if you find a replacement for your space in the event - if
the event is sold out.
• If a minimum number of participants are required to run any event and that
number is not met within 72 hours of the scheduled time, the class will be
cancelled and you will not be charged.

SHOWS & E XHIBITIONS
FROM THE ART SHOW CHAIR
Mary Lou Krause
Our 2013-14 season at the Art League
has some very exciting exhibits NOT TO
BE MISSED.
On December 4, Gary Monroe will address the audience at the Cultural Center
on the “Highwaymen.” These are a group
of 26 African American landscape artists
in Florida. Self-taught and self-mentoring, they created a body of work of over
200,000 paintings, despite facing many
cultural barriers. They have been called
"The Last Great American Art Movement
of the 20th century".
In January, we are fortunate to welcome the return of Clyde Butcher, a wellknown photographer of Florida landscaping and National Parks. Mr. Butcher
was inducted into the Florida Artist Hall
of Fame in 1998. Clyde Butcher is often
called "The Ansel Adams of Florida."
Butcher has built a career as one of the
most highly regarded black-and-white
landscape photographers in the world.
Mr. Butcher will be joined by our very
own Linda Carithers, exhibiting Florida
Keys Flowers and Feathers.
On February 4, an additional attraction will be Steven Techet and Friends in
the "All Male Review" Exhibit, displaying woodworking, paintings and much
more. Joining our member artists will be
well known designer Bill Graham exhibiting his line of hats.
New Works Show has been moved to
late January to allow members to complete their projects. Carol Ellis, Nancy
Rohan and instructor Rocky Ferris will
be here on February 18 along with well
known bronze artist Kimber Fiebiger.
In March, look forward to Kathleen
Denis, Jason Barth and Jim Lewk's
exhibit as well as the very popular Ocean
Reef Associates Show.
The Annual Nantucket Basket Show
will also display Maritime Fine Art
owned by Ocean Reef members.
The end of season Easter Show is always an amazing event to see the quality of completed projects by all of our
members.

ORCHID GARDENS
Fee $85
Friday, January 10
Bus will depart the Art League
at 10:00 am and return by 4:00 pm
While butterflies are found in numerous
habitats all over the world, most species
are found in the tropics and subtropics. Fairchild boasts over 40 species
of butterflies alone. Many of these
butterflies, including the Atala, Monarch
and Zebra Longwing can be seen in the
beautiful Lisa D. Anness Butterfly Garden
surrounding thousands of tropical plants
and orchids.
Please join us on this exciting adventure.
“AI WEIWEI” AT THE MIAMI
ART MUSEUM
Fee $85
Saturday, January 18
Bus leaves the Art League
at 8:30 am
Opening in December, the Perez Art
Museum Miami is a modern and
contemporary art museum dedicated to
collecting and exhibiting art of the 20th
and 21st centuries. Located in Museum
Park overlooking Biscayne Bay, PAMM
is the anchor museum for the urban
redesign for the area now known as
Bicentennial Park. The new museum
is three times the size of the museum’s
current facility. Built with both public
and private funds, the new museum
is designed to achieve silver LEED
certification.
We will have a one hour guided tour
of the new museum and the PAMM’s
opening exhibit, entitled “Ai Weiwei:
According to What?” PAMM describes
the exhibition as revealing “Ai’s practice
as emeging from an ever-questioning
dialogue with the social, political and
4
cultural positions of his native China and
the world at large. Ai works in a range of
media, including architecture and design,
and this exhibition will feature work of
the last 20 years, including photography
and the large-scale sculptures for which
the artist is best known.”
Afterwards you will have ample time to
view various other exhibits and galleries
before re-boarding the coach to continue
on with our Chinese theme and enjoying
lunch at Miss Yip’s Chinese Restaurant.

AMERICA IN PALM BEACH

We are excited to be offering the Miami
River Tour once again through History
Miami. Dr. Paul George will take you

explains its wonderful history including
the Tequesta Indians, Julia Tuttle, Henry
Flagler, the Miami Circle and the cargo
district which makes Miami a truly
working river.
You will learn about the entire history of
the Miami River and see how the river is
undergoing a complete transformation
as dozens of condominiums, hotels and
buildings are popping up along the banks
of the river making it the place to be in
the near future. This special Miami River
cruise navigates the entire 5.5-mile long
navigable river.
More details to follow in upcoming
publications.
SPAMALOT
Fee: $150 includes
transportation, theatre & dinner
Sunday, March 9
Bus departs the Art League
at 12:30 pm, returns by 7:30 p.m.
Monty Python’s Spamalot is a musical
comedy “lovingly ripped off from” the
1975 film Monty Python and the Holy
Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent
parody of the Arthurian Legend, but it
differs from the film in many ways.
Stalwart Eric Idle and composer John
Du Prez adapt the classic film Monty
Python and the Holy Grail into a musical
featuring the Knights Who Say Ni, killer
rabbits, accused witches and other
Python touches. Spamalot adds swipes
at Vegas glitz and Broadway conventions
to the film’s anarchic spirit.
We will cap this wonderful day off
with dinner at one of Coral Gables best
restaurants.
SHARK VALLEY TOUR AND
CLYDE BUTCHER GALLERY
Fee: $90
Tuesday, April 15
Motor coach will depart the Art League at
8:15 am and return by 4:00 pm
Shark Valley Tram Tours is an open-air
tour through the “River of Grass,” the
Shark Valley section of the Everglades
National Park. Besides being given
insight into the eco-system, you will also
be shown some of the ‘hidden’ aspects
which help make this a world re-known
wetland. Part of this tour includes a 45
foot high observation deck allowing
a panoramic view of the heart of the
Everglades, extending 20 miles in all
directions.
Afterwards we will re-board our coach
and head to Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress
Gallery to enjoy our lunches and take in
some more breath taking views.

MAKING FASCINATORS WITH
BILL GRAHAM
1 day workshop
Fri., Jan. 31 Fee: $135
10:00 am–3:00 pm
Taking time to get a critique is one of
the most significant things an artist can
do to enlarge their painting vocabulary
and goals. It is imperative that a critique
be delivered by a “qualified” artist/
instructor. Those qualities should
embody a broad spectrum of experience,
creative vision and accumulated
technical skills that are skillfully
translated into usefully “pointed”
direction. Such a critique is akin to
getting a treasure chest full of gold.
The Fascinator–the fanciful little hat that
originated in England and now has taken
the millinery world by storm. No matter if it’s made of feathers, flowers, felt,
horsehair, or straw it has become the focal point of most fashion minded women.
The perfect accessory for a cocktail party, tea, black tie event, or wedding. Now
is your chance to learn about and create your own fashion statement in this

About Sue: She grew up in Brooklyn and found
her way west to graduate school at the University of Arizona. There she was introduced to the
Indians of the Southwest and their crafts and
was immediately intrigued. After moving to San
Diego, she found her art–“Natural Basketry” in
the techniques used by basket weavers from
Appalachia to the Southwest. In the summer
of 1983, Sue studied with a Tohono O’odham
(Papago) basket weaver, and now incorporates
many of her techniques in her own pine needle
baskets. Sue has taught classes privately and
through the University of California at San Diego, and on cruises to Nassau, St. Thomas, and
St. Martin, at Georgia Basketry Association’s
(GBA) annual convention, 2012 Stowe (VT)
Basketry Festival in Stowe, Vermont. Her baskets have been exhibited in galleries and shows

STORYTELLER DOLLS & FAIRIES WITH ELLIE HITCHCOCK
A Storyteller Doll is a clay figure made
by the Pueblo people of New Mexico. The
Pueblos combined their skill at sculpture
with their love of storytelling and began
a tradition of creating “storyteller dolls.”
In this workshop we will be creating
an original take on the Storyteller Doll,
but it will be made out of polymer clay
in beautiful bright colors. We will build
beautiful Native American cane design
to decorate the Storyteller’s blanket
and then will go wild with our creative
expression in making our own version of
the Storyteller.
In 1917, around the end of the World War
I, fairies were the talk of England, after
two young girls posed with fairies in
pictures. This caught the attention of Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, who included the
girls’ photographs in an article he was
writing. Even though the two young girls
later admitted that the photos were fake,
there is still something so nice about the
fact that for so long it was all a mystery to
people, and that it brought hope during a
hard time.
The fairies we will be making in this
workshop are what Ellie Hitchcock
thinks they would look like if they really
did exist.
About the artist: After taking the Artist’s Way
course in 1995, Ellie made the decision to pursue
her art full–time. Ellie started out with her work
in galleries in San Diego and La Jolla and then
juried into Spanish Village Art Center. For four
years Ellie was president of the art center. She is
a member of the San Diego Polymer Clay Guild
and is currently President and Communications
Officer for the guild. She is also the co–chair for
the annual polymer clay retreat called Sandy
Camp, which brings people together from all
over the globe to do polymer clay at Warner
Springs Ranch. Ellie has received many awards
for her polymer clay, has had pieces in the Small
Image Show in Gallery 21 and won the Designer’s

Choice Award from the American Art Clay

Whether you are an experienced potter/
ceramic artist or just starting out with
clay, this three–day workshop will be a
safe-zone for exploring creativity. We’ll
focus on making our mark by etching,
drawing and using pattern and imagery
on the clay surface.
We’ll begin each day with inspiration – by
looking at historical and current works in
clay, talking about pattern and influences,
and participating in exercises to get creative juices flowing. Numerous decorative
techniques will be explored–stamping,
underglaze painting, and resists–including the “woodcut/scraffito” and “scrimshaw/etching” methods in my work.
We’ll start with mark-making on slabs of
clay, exploring various techniques. We’ll
move on to prepare “pillow tile” forms
that will be our canvases for further deco-
ration. We’ll explore layering of imagery
and decorating with texture and color.
Great for all levels!

to sculpt. All skill levels are welcome and
individualized instruction will be tailored to meet each person’s ability. All

a full moon rising in the sky at sunset
are natural factors that contribute to the
mood of a photograph. During our time

10:00 am–3:00 pm
10:00 am–3:00 pm
Make photographs that you like. This
workshop is about photographs as
an art form – a way of sharing your
feelings and emotions about something
or someone – a baby, a sunset, a friend –
with other people through the medium of
photograph.
This workshop is about developing your
sense of what you like in an image and
how to achieve that with the tools at your
disposal.
You will review how to gain control of
your camera, how to find and see beautiful
light, how to arrange compositions to
your satisfaction, how to tell a story in
your picture, and how to evaluate your
own work.
We will divide our time between
presentations on these topics, group
feedback on your images, and photo
shoots in the area.
All levels of experience are welcome as
are all photographic modes: digital or
film, color or black and white, phone,
iPad, point-and-shoot or DSLR.
About the instructor: Robert is a fine art
photographer working in natural light. He has
worked on Cape Cod, in Florence and Budapest,
Iran and the Philippines. He lives on Cape Cod,

THE WORKS AND LEGACY OF
THE HIGHWAYMEN
Co-Sponsored by
KAREN AND DON WAITE
Gary Monroe, Speaker
Wednesday, December 4
4:00 pm
In the late 1950s, in the east coast town
of Fort Pierce, about 125 miles north
of Miami, a group of young, self-taught
African-American artists began to
paint optimistic and colorful Florida
landscapes – wind-bent palm trees,
billowing clouds, vivid sunsets. They
periodically left their backyard studios
and took to the highway to sell their
works out of the trunks of their cars –
earning the name The Highwaymen.
Their vibrant images represented the
American Dream.
Join us to hear how author Gary Monroe
got to know these artists as he speaks
about their backgrounds, paintings
and their legacy prior to the opening
reception of Painting Paradise: The Art
of the Florida Highwaymen.
Book signing with wine and cheese
reception immediately following at Art
League Opening of “Painting Paradise:
The Art of the Florida Highwaymen”
About the speaker: Gary Monroe is a professor
of art at Daytona State College. With a longtime interest in “outsider” and vernacular art,
his work has been recognized by grants from
the National Endowment for the Arts and
the Fulbright Foundation and he has been a
popular lecturer for the Florida Humanities
Council’s Speakers Bureau. In November 2001,
a New York Times article coincided with the
publication of Monroe’s book, The Highwaymen: Florida’s African-American Landscape
Painters, catapulting a national appreciation
for their art. Mr. Monroe’s pioneering research
has defined The Highwaymen, so much so that
14
in 2004, he successfully nominated The Highwaymen to the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
He is also the author of Harold Newton, The
Original Highwayman, The Highwaymen Murals: Al Black’s Concrete Dream, and an array
of books about self-taught artists.

Co-Sponsored by
SWENSON & ECUYER REALTY
Jay Tunney, Speaker
Wednesday, February 20
4:00 pm
Join art historian, curator, author, and
museum director, Dr. Dorothy Kosinski,
in a discussion about one of the world’s
most famous paintings – PierreAuguste Renoir’s 1880-81 Luncheon of
the Boating Party. This radiant icon of
Impressionism is rich in multiple layers
of meaning and significance. Stylistically
the painting represents the apogee of
the artist’s career. The grand riverside
scene offers a glimpse into the vitality of
middle class nineteenth century France.
The painting is a portal to understand
the profound industrial and sociological
changes that transformed Paris into
the modern capital we know today. We
can come to know each character in
this scene, a fascinating narrative that
intersects with the wildly popular recent
best-seller, The Hare with the Amber
Eyes. The painting continues to inspire
and inform – the object of curatorial
study and cutting-edge technical analysis
– a springboard for new knowledge
and vital learning in the museum of the
twenty first century.
About the speaker: Dr. Dorothy Kosinski has
served as Director of The Phillips Collection
since 2008. Prior to joining The Phillips Collection, Dr. Kosinski worked at the Dallas Museum
of Art, where she served in a number of capacities from 1995 to 2008, last as Senior Curator
of Painting and Sculpture. From 1985 to 1997,
she worked with the Douglas Cooper Collection
of cubist art in Basel, Switzerland. She also
served as an independent curator of major exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, London;
The Kunstmuseum Basel; The Kunstmuseum
Wolfsburg; and The National Gallery in Prague.
Dr. Kosinski has written and edited many books
and catalogs on a variety of art topics including 19th Century Symbolism, Dada, Surrealism,
20th Century sculpture and contemporary art.
In August 2013 Dr. Kosinski was appointed by
President Obama to the National Council on the
Humanities. She currently serves on the Board
4:00 pm
Ernest Hemingway and Gene Tunney had
a symbiotic relationship. Hemingway,
the writer, was always yearning, and
searching, to be a man of action and
not to just be a writer about it. Boxing,
bullfighting and sports fishing were his
subjects that he constantly talked about
as well as references to literature.
Gene Tunney, on the other hand, was a
man of action who yearned and searched
to be a man of literature, poetry and
culture. Both men were perfectly suited
for one another – they gave the other
what the other lacked. Besides they were
both champions in their own fields – a
real draw.
Please join us for an interesting twist into
the lives of two very unique individuals.
Book signing and wine and cheese
reception immediately follows.
About the speaker: Jay R. Tunney has had two
careers: one as an entrepreneur businessman
in Asia. He searched for oil in Burma, was a
ship owner in Hong Kong, and spent ten years
as a founder and operator of the first premium ice cream chain in Korea. His work as an
entrepreneur was featured on PBS, CNN, DowJones Financial TV, the BBC, Nippon Television
and others. In his second career, as a writer
and lecturer, he co-scripted and presented a
popular BBC radio program about his father,
heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney,
and the playwright, George Bernard Shaw.
That program, The Master and the Boy, aired
in 2001 to an estimated fourteen million people
around the world.
Jay Tunney’s essays on the Tunney-Shaw friendship have appeared in three volumes of the
Bernard Shaw Studies published by Penn State
Press. Jay R.Tunney sits on the advisory board
of the Bernard Shaw Society, is on the Governor’s International Advisory Council of the
Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario,
and is vice-president of the International Shaw
Society.

Linda Klimowicz and Libby Macaulay,
Reviewers
Rachman’s debut novel follows the
private lives of the reporters, editors and
executives of an international Englishlanguage newspaper as they struggle to
keep it, and themselves, afloat.
Gene Tunney, the world heavyweight boxing champion from 1926-1928 seemed an
unusual companion for George Bernard
Shaw, but Shaw, a world famous playwright, found the Irish-American athlete
to be “among the very few for whom I
have established a warm affection.” This
book chronicles the legendary, but rarely
documented relationships that formed
between them. We are honored to have
the author as our reviewer.
