MILES DAVIS QUINTET
with John Coltrane & Sonny Stitt
THE COMPLETE 1960 HOLLAND CONCERTS
+ 4 bonus tracks
Miles Davis gave two concerts at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in 1960 as part of a
Jazz at the Philharmonic package, one on April 9 and the other on October 15. On the
first, his quintet showcased John Coltrane, who had reticently agreed to join Miles for
the gig and left the group shortly after. For that reason, he was replaced on the October
performance by Sonny Stitt. Both concert are presented here in their entirety (both in
excellent sound quality), along with a second concert given by the group with Coltrane
on April 9 in Scheveningen. As a bonus, a quartet set by Coltrane with Miles’ rhythm
section recorded in Dusseldorf during that same tour (Miles didn’s play on this filmed
session because he wanted more money that what was available for the project)

GEORGE SHEARING TRIO
All Music Guide
This edition presents the George Shearing trio’s complete long unavailable LP Jazz Moments (Capitol Records ST 1827), which marked the first and
only album the pianist recorded with the rhythm section of Israel Crosby
on bass and Vernel Fournier on drums. Both musicians had been part of
the celebrated Ahmad Jamal Trio and joined Shearing in 1962. However,
the group wouldn’t record again due to Crosby’s untimely death of a
heart attack on August 11, 1962 at the age of 43. All five instrumental
sides by Shearing’s Quintet from a otherwise vocal album shared with
singer Nancy Wilson, as well a complete 1961 quintet session and two
rare Sharing items originally issued on a Capitol single (appearing here
on CD for the first time ever) have been added as a bonus.

MILES DAVIS QUARTET
CD
The 1951 - 1957 Studio Recordings
benny goodman sextet
Live at Basin Street East
+ 2 BONUS TRACKS
Miles Davis only cut a few sides in a quartet format. During the early decades of his career, when his music was all acoustic, he favored the quintet format with a frontline of
a trumpet and tenor sax, and led amazing orchestal sessions backed by the Gil Evans
band. He also recorded in larger groups, but his quartet performances are scarce.
A rarely heard complete performance by a
swinging version of the Benny Goodman
Sextet., featuring the immortal leader plus
the great Charlie Shavers on trumpet,
pianist Mel Powell, bassist Israel Crosby
(who would gain fame in the Ahmad Jamal
Trio), guitarist Steve Jordan, and drummer
Morey Feld.
All of his quartet studio output from 1951-57 is contained in this set in chronological
order, including as a bonus a live quartet performance of “What’s New?” (a song Miles
never recorded in the studio under his own name), taped in Germany in 1956, and a
live quartet version of “My Funny Valentine”, recorded in 1958 with Bill Evans on piano.
The latter marked the trumpeter’s only quartet recording with Evans, as well as the last
appearance of a quartet track in his whole discography until 1963.

THE LONELY BULL + 4 Bonus tracks!
This quintessential release contains Alpert’s magnificent debut
album for his A&M label, The Lonely Bull (1962). With its cinematic mix of dramatic brass fanfares, crowd noise, chorus, twangy guitar, and mandolins, the song “The Lonely Bull” became a
hit, while introducing the world to the unique personal sound of
Herb Alpert. The whole album was originally issued in both mono
and stereo versions, and has been remastered here in this very
special collector’s edition, which features the classic LP in both
formats. Also are included 4 bonus tracks, consisting of hard-tofind sides from Herb’s first steps as a vocalist, under the alterego Dore Alpert. All of these fabulous tunes serve as the best
introduction for anyone
wanting to explore the music from Alpert’s early career. This is

The music on this CD put Chet Baker
on the scene not just as a brilliant trumpeter, but also as a talented singer.
The original 10” LP Chet Baker Sings
(Pacific Jazz JLP-11) was a revelation at the
time and won Baker new fame and a
new audience, which was more familiar
with pop music than jazz. The reasons
are quite clear: Chet’s voice is tender
and beautiful, and at the same time his
phrasing always swings and surprises.
This issue follows the artwork of a rare
early LP reedition.

The musicians on Stretching Out constitute an authentic “who’s who” of jazz. The
album pays homage to music that predates the participating players, and even the
newer tunes are well rooted in the beginnings of jazz and intend to recreate the
New Orleans spirit. However, none of the
musicians here are limited to imitating ancient styles. Instead, they create fresh new
music on this session, recorded right after
the bebop era at the end of 1958. Cool jazz
meets swing on this valuable but long outof-print LP. Valve trombonist in the same
vein, Kansas City Revisited showcases four
songs associated with the late-’30s Count
Basie Orchestra plus a couple of numbers
that are sung by the underrated vocalist
Big Miller, who was making his recording
debut at the time.

The music on this two-CD set, which contains two
previously unreleased concerts, has performances
by both of those quintets. The Coltrane half, from
April 9, finds the tenor-saxophonist often taking
surprisingly brief and hesitant solos although he
cuts loose on “All Blues.” Since the concert was
in the middle of a very busy tour and began at
midnight, it has been speculated that Coltrane was
simply tired that night! Davis is the obvious star
on such numbers as “If I Were A Bell” and “So
What.” The remainder of this twofer dates from
Oct. 15. The rhythm section is superb on its features, “Whisper Not” and the blues “Ease It.” While
Stitt did not really fit into the group, preferring
to play bebop rather than explore Davis’ modal
music, he is excellent on his features: “Stardust”
and “Old Folks.” As for the trumpeter, his playing
on “But Not For Me,” an uptempo “Walkin’” and
“All Of You” is excellent and differs from his earlier studio recordings. Although other music has
been released from these two tours, Miles Davis
fans will have to get So What for these enjoyable performances have not been heard since they
were originally broadcast on the radio.
Lost Tapes is a major new find that adds some valuable and previously unreleased live and studio
performances to Jutta Hipp’s relatively slim discography. The first 13 titles, dating from 1952-53,
are her earliest recordings. The opener, “Blues
After Hours,” is a real surprise for Hipp reveals
herself to be a superior swing/blues pianist. On
“Erroll’s Bounce” she does a fine imitation of
Erroll Garner. Hans Koller’s light-toned tenor,
which sounds a bit like Warne Marsh, is featured
on the next five selections with the quartet. With
the addition of trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff,
on six more numbers as a quintet, these are solid
examples of 1950s cool jazz. While Hipp’s playing hints in some spots at Tristano, she is more
laidback and already had her own fresh musical
personality. The final four numbers are from 1955
with Hipp in the spotlight. Two of the songs also
feature guitarist Attila Zoller and Joki Freund on
tenor. While it will never really be known why
Jutta Hipp decided to become the Greta Garbo of
jazz, Lost Tapes reminds listeners how vital a pianist she was in the 1950s.
Two of Mancini’s most jazz-oriented albums are
reissued in full on this CD, both dating from 1960.
Mancini only contributed six of the 24 songs but
he arranged all of the music. Combo is a rare
Mancini small-group date. His 11-piece group includes Art Pepper on alto and clarinet, trumpeter
Pete Candoli, vibraphonist Larry Bunker, drummer Shelly Manne and John Williams (who would
become a rather notable film composer himself)
on piano and harpsichord. While the harpsichord
is certainly a unique touch on a few of the numbers (particularly “Moanin’”), the main soloist on
these tunes is generally Pepper.
The Blues And The Beat album features a big
band that is filled with many jazz stars including
Candoli, Williams, trombonist Dick Nash and altoists Ronnie Lang and Ted Nash. Many of the
songs (including “Smoke Rings,” “Mood Indigo”
and “Sing, Sing, Sing”) were newly arranged
versions of tunes from the swing era, songs with
strong melodies that perfectly fit Mancini’s easylistening yet swinging style. This is an enjoyable
package of Henry Mancini at his best.

While the 3 Cohens have recorded together with
a rhythm section, on Tightrope they live up to the
album’s title by mostly performing as an a capella trio. Bassist Christian McBride and drummer
Johnathan Blake are on one song apiece and three
other tunes have pianist Fred Hersch making the
group a quartet. But otherwise 13 of the 18 selections feature the 3 Cohens playing, without any
rhythm section. It all works. While five of the pieces are brief free improvisations, the Cohens also
make such songs as Art Farmer’s boppish “Blueport,” Gerry Mulligan’s “Festive Minor,” “Hot
House,” and “Indiana,” sound very complete
and swinging. Thelonious Monk’s “I Mean You”
with Fred Hersch is another highpoint. While
one would not think of soprano-sax, trumpet and
clarinet as a full band (particularly since none of
the horns are bass instruments), the 3 Cohens are
expert at using space, making every note count,
spontaneously harmonizing, and keeping the beat
without the help of other instrumentalists. The results on this memorable album are unusual, unique and very successful.
Tightrope is highly recommended.
The music on this formerly rare concert is the earliest recorded example (with one slight exception)
of tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse playing as a
member of the Thelonious Monk Quartet without
other guests. Rouse joined Monk in 1959, staying
for ten years. The pianist was excited to be in
Europe for only the second time in his career (the
earlier visit was in 1954) and to be well received.
The quartet performs 11 of Monk’s compositions, sounding in particularly swinging form on
“Jackie-ing,” “Straight No Chaser,” “Evidence”
and “I Mean You.” Rouse shows what a strong
fit he was with the group. While Monk’s concerts
in later years sometimes had excessive bass and
drum solos, other than a brief Dunlop break at the
beginning of “Jackie-ing,” all of the solo space is
taken up by Monk and Rouse.
This excellent set, which includes previously unreleased versions of “San Francisco Holiday” and
the closing theme “Epistrophy,” easily holds its
own with Monk’s slightly later Columbia studio
recordings. This is prime Thelonious Monk.
This double-CD has all of the music from those
four albums except for five alternate takes. Little
during this time had become the first trumpeter
since Clifford Brown to develop his own style.
His melancholy sound and ability to take unusual
interval jumps served him well, bridging the gap
between hard bop and the avant-garde. Booker
Little is featured in a quintet that includes coleader Max Roach, tenor-saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Tommy Flanagan and bassist Art
Davis (Booker Little 4 and Max Roach), heading
a quartet with bassist Scott LaFaro, drummer Roy
Haynes and either Tommy Flanagan or Wynton
Kelly on piano (Booker Little), leading an allstar sextet with trombonist Julian Priester, Eric
Dolphy, pianist Don Friedman, Roach and either
Art Davis or Ron Carter on bass (Out Front) and
finally a sextet with Priester, Coleman, Friedman,
bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Pete La
Roca (Booker Little and Friend).
Throughout this two-fer, Booker Little plays
fresh solos and introduces obscure but rewarding
originals along with his own inventive versions
of a few standards. This is essential music for all
serious jazz collections.

Live At Montmartre 1969, which has recently
been released for the first time, features Bent
Jaedig at the age of 34 and at the height of his
powers. The well-recorded tapes were originally
saved from being thrown out in 1976 by an employee who worked in public relations. The worker, Ib Skovgaard, deserves thanks from the jazz
world for saving this classic music. It may have
been 1969 when these eight selections were recorded, but there little hint of the avant-garde, fusion or soul jazz in Bent Jaedig’s playing. Jaedig
also displays the ability to take long solos without
running out of fresh and inventive ideas. The
rhythm section mostly plays as if it were 1963 rather than 1969, performing timeless, enthusiastic
and creative hard bop. Bent Jaedig and his quartet
perform lengthy versions of four standards and
two originals. Of the latter, “For Sale” uses the
chord changes of “Love For Sale” while the other
piece is a minor blues.
Live At Montmartre 1969 is one of the very best
Bent Jaedig CDs available. And to think that it
was almost lost to history.
This single CD from Essential Jazz Classics
reissues all of the music from two of Burrell’s
earlier recordings except for a selection that did
not include the guitarist; in its place are two other
performances from the same session that were
not originally on the album. While Weaver Of
Dreams and Introducing Kenny Burrell are unrelated, both albums also feature the great pianist
Tommy Flanagan.
Weaver Of Dreams, which dates from 1960-61,
has Bobby Jaspar on tenor and flute with the quintet. Most unusual about this project is that Burrell
takes vocals on ten of the twelve numbers, displaying a personable and friendly voice. He has only
sung infrequently throughout his career, making
this date a bit of a collectors item.
Introducing Kenny Burrell, from 1956, was the
guitarist’s debut recording for the Blue Note label. The instrumental date has Burrell and Flanagan well showcased in a quintet also including
bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Kenny Clarke
and Candido on congas.
This is recommended music from one of the finest jazz guitarists of the 1950s and ’60s.
The group lasted less than nine months, but
Jazz Lab was one of the most promising bands
of 1957. During its brief existence, the group,
which had shifting personnel, recorded five albums: two records titled Jazz Lab, Gigi Gryce
and the Jazz Lab, Modern Jazz Perspective, and
an obscure set only previously released in Japan
called new Formulas From The Jazz Lab. All of
those performances plus the group’s three-song
appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival, four
songs by Gryce in a 1955 quartet, and the 1955
album Oscar Pettiford (which features both Byrd
and Gryce in an octet) are reissued in full on this
attractive four-CD set.
Jazz Lab was usually a quintet and such notables
as Tommy Flanagan, Wade Legge, Hank Jones,
Wynton Kelly, Wendell Marshall, Paul Chambers,
Art Taylor and Osie Johnson. Five selections add
three or four horns and Jackie Paris takes three
vocals on one session.
The 52 performances on this reissue help to define hard bop of the period. Byrd and Gryce are
heard in top form and, even though the group was
short-lived, its music made an impact and is still
highly enjoyable today.

The double-CD Star Of Jupiter starts off sounding
like a top-notch fusion record a la Weather Report
and Return To Forever in the 1970s with “Comma Band” and “Welcome Home.” Rosenwinkel’s
guitar sometimes sounds like a horn and at other
times emulates a synthesizer. Keyboardist Aaron
Parks hints at Joe Zawinul, and acoustic bassist
Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner contribute plenty of power and energy. But then it changes, with Rosenwinkel playing complex melodies
on “Mr. Hope” and “Homage A’Mitch” that become straight ahead swinging post bop jazz. On
“Kurt 1,” his octaves even sound a little like Wes
Montgomery in spots.
This 2012 set, which has a dozen Rosenwinkel
originals (most of recent vintage), features the
inventive guitarist leading one of his strongest
and most unified groups. His interplay and close
communication with Aaron Parks is always impressive, the versatile quartet has a strong spirit
and, when the music needs it, they can swing hard
while still sounding contemporary. With all of its
variety, everything works on Star Of Jupiter.
The packaging may not be the best on this CD,
but all of this music from Ella Fitzgerald is superb and being released for the first time.
Best Of The BBC Vaults features Ella on three
different occasions performing before audiences. Unfortunately the CD does not give dates or
personnel. All but two selections were performed
on one of two occasions in 1965. In both cases,
Ella is accompanied by pianist Tommy Flanagan,
bassist Keter Betts and drummer Ed Thigpen.
Sometimes the Johnny Spence Orchestra with tenor-saxophonist Tubby Hayes accompanies Ella.
“Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Good Morning
Heartache” are from an engagement at Ronnie
Scott’s in 1974, with Ella still joined by Flanagan and Betts plus drummer Bobby Durham and
guitarist Joe Pass.
And amazingly enough, all of these performances plus a few more are also available on an Ella
Fitzgerald DVD also titled Best Of The BBC
Vaults. No record collection can have too much
Ella Fitzgerald!
STU-136511

Hamilton has stayed true to his musical vision,
recording dozens of high-quality small group
swing sessions, all of which are quite worthy. If
Swedish Ballads…& More has any faults at all,
it is its title. Although each of the seven numbers would sound fine at slow tempos, this is not
a ballad date. Most of the tunes are played at a
medium-tempo pace, the tempo that Hamilton
most favors.
Hamilton is joined by the great Swedish pianist
Jan Lundgren, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and
drummer Kristian Leth. Of the seven selections
that they interpret, Quincy Jones’“Stockholm
Sweetnin’” is the only piece written by a nonSwede. The folk song “Dear Old Stockholm”
became a jazz standard after being recorded by
Stan Getz and Miles Davis in the 1950s. The
other five selections are best known to music fans
from Sweden but each one could have become a
jazz standard if they had been more widely heard
outside of Sweden. Scott Hamilton’s warm tone,
melodic improvising and ability to consistently
come up with subtle variations uplift each of the
songs on this tasteful and accessible set.

performance recorded live at a New York club (probably Birdland)
in 1953. He is featured in a quartet format with the celebrated Lou
Donaldson on alto sax, bassist Jimmy Schenck (a virtually unknown

Besides presenting versions of songs he rarely recorded, as well as

In late 1949 and early 1950, the great Coleman Hawkins toured
Europe playing with an All Star group that included fellow Americans James Moody, Kenny Clarke, and Nat Peck, plus prestigious European jazzmen such as Hubert Fol, Pierre Michelot,
and Jean-Paul Mengeon. Fortunately, two concerts by this group
were preserved for posterity: a set in Lausanne, Switzerland, recorded on December 3, 1949 (that already appeared on CD),
and this German performance at Munich’s Deutsches Museum,
which appears here for the first time ever on any format.
Among the varioushighlights are Hawkins’ driving “Rifftide” (a
reworking of “Oh, Lady be Good”), “Stuffy” and “Disorder at the

after his famous 1939 recording became a landmark.

Aladdin label, which were made right after the saxophonist’s release from prision and dishonourable discharge from
the U.S.Army. Although legend has it
he was never the same after his experiences in the military, Young’s playing
throughout these recordings exceeds
even his own high standards.
