Erik Kok [email protected]
Erik Kok (1966, Amsterdam) lives in Enschede, the
Netherlands. He studied Ceramics and Graphics Art at the
AKI Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede (1985-1990). He
graduated in 1990. Ever since his graduation, he regularly
made various exhibitions, both in the Netherlands and
abroad. Since 1996, he works as a Ceramics instructor at
AKI/Artez.
His work exemplifies his emotions concerning nourishment, love and dreams, but also angst, drenching, death.
This is shaped in allegoric images. He thrives for a sense
of balance, in which beauty and the thematic expression
of meaning are not in opposition, but instead mutually
reinforce each other.

Born in Münster in 1966, I left school to commence a
bookbinding apprenticeship in a local studio in 1985. Having completed the apprenticeship I left for London to start
a diploma course in paper conservation in 1988. Finishing
my studies in 1990 I returned to Germany to start work as
a paper conservator for the state and university library in
Göttingen, working primarily on a large collection of maps.
While still in Göttingen I entered a programme financed by
the German Foreign Office to set up a conservation studio
for the Assad Library in Damaskus, Syria. In 1993 I joined
regional government in Münster to work in a conservation
centre for local museums, specialising in conservation of
paper and leather objects.
In 1995 I set up as a freelance conservator and left my position in the regional conservation centre. Since then I have
worked for a large number of museums, private and public
collections, carrying out active conservation of all types
of paper and leather objects as well as advising collectors,
galleries and museums on storage, transport, mounting,
framing and the general approach to conservation as opposed to restoration.
Specialised subjects are modern works, unusual material
combinations and modern adhesives.
