Bring Your Family to Phoenix Phoenix’s perpetual sunshine might tempt you to spend all of your free time sitting next to a swimming pool. Don’t give in. Located in the Sonoran Desert, which is one of the wettest and greenest deserts in North America, Phoenix is home to Camelback Mountain, where you can hike a rugged but rewarding trail to the top of the mountain’s “hump.” If you prefer a more scenic view of Camelback, take in the vistas from a nearby restaurant patio. Buzz-worthy eateries are as plentiful in Greater Phoenix as cactuses, and they come in just as many varieties. Once you’ve satiated your palate, be sure to explore the art and culture of Phoenix. The Heard Museum (Native American); Desert Botanical Garden (the world’s largest collection of desert plants); Taliesin West (home of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation); the Phoenix Art Museum (the Southwest’s largest art museum); the Fleischer Museum (American Impressionism); the Arizona Science Center; Pueblo Grande Museum and Cultural Park (Native American) and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) are among the cultural hot spots. There’s so much to do and see in Phoenix. Visit our customized web page, which shares the best of what Phoenix has to offer. He moved in rarefied circles, a friend to presidents, vaudeville stars, leading thinkers. But when he was thirty-two years old, in 1900, he gave it all up to pursue his Great Idea: to capture on film the continent’s original inhabitants before the old ways disappeared. Curtis spent the next three decades documenting the stories and rituals of more than eighty North American tribes. It took tremendous perseverance — ten years alone to persuade the Hopi to allow him to observe their Snake Dance ceremony. And the undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate. Curtis would amass more than 40,000 photographs and 10,000 audio recordings, and he is credited with making the first narrative documentary film. In the process, the charming rogue with the grade school education created the most definitive archive of the American Indian. Timothy Egan is an acclaimed writer and veteran chronicler of the West whose interests range wide across the American landscape and American history. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, a popular columnist, and a National Book Award-winning author. His weekly online column for The New York Times, the popular “Opinionator,” is consistently among the most read pieces on the NYT site. Before that, he worked as one of the newspaper’s national correspondents, roaming the West and serving as its Pacific Northwest correspondent. In 2001, Egan was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that wrote the series “How Race Is Lived in America.” Egan is the author of several books, including The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America, a New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2009 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. The Big Burn was also the inspiration for a recent documentary also titled The Big Burn which aired on The American Experience (PBS) in 2014. Egan’s book The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl, a work Walter Cronkite called “can’t-put-itdown history,” won the 2006 National Book Award for nonfiction. Egan is featured prominently in Ken Burns’ acclaimed 2012 film, The Dust Bowl. IPEDS Workshop Highlights ■■ 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Phoenix Convention Center ■■ Six hours of instruction (demonstrations, discussions, PowerPoint presentations, and handson computer based training exercises) divided into two 3 hour segments ~ IPEDS Data as the Public Face of an Institution ~ IPEDS Data and Benchmarking: Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness ■■ Provided at no charge to participants Workshop Content Description IPEDS Data as the Public Face of an Institution raises the level of awareness among higher education professionals about the importance of accuracy and consistency in data reported to IPEDS. Examples of real IPEDS data used in the public domain will be incorporated, enabling participants to understand how IPEDS data are used by governmental and non-governmental entities. This module includes presentations, discussions, exercises and demonstrations utilizing IPEDS data tools and resources. 16 | AACRAO 102ND ANNUAL MEETING IPEDS Data and Benchmarking: Supporting Decision Making and Institutional Effectiveness is designed for participants with little to no experience in the area of conducting benchmarking studies or with the IPEDS Data Center. This module introduces the fundamentals of creating benchmarks to measure institutional effectiveness. The module provides an overview of the types of comparison groups that can be constructed using IPEDS data, with examples of appropriate use. Participants will use actual data from the IPEDS Surveys, Data Feedback Reports, and the Data Center. Exercises and resources will demonstrate processes to establish key performance indicators and identify variables to refine comparison groups. Note: Participants are required to bring a MAC or PC laptop with wireless capability and Microsoft Excel. IPEDS Workshop Online Registration This workshop is limited to 45 participants and workshop seats are allocated on a first-come, firstserved basis.
