As someone who is new to Portland, you might find yourself in the
same position as new Reedies, trying to figure out a new city and in
need of referrals and recommendations from others in the Reed
community. You may seek to explore all of Portland’s weirdness, visit
the vast array of bookstores and coffee shops, sample the seemingly
endless types of cuisines the city has to offer, and take part in the
region’s many outdoor activities. But where to get started?
The Reed College Guide to Multicultural Portland is designed to
provide Reedies with a starting point for beginning the exploration of
this great city. With so much to take advantage of, so many activities
to engage with, and so many events to participate in, it may be a
daunting task to think about what to do first. We may not be able to
come to a consensus about what to do first, but with this guide, your
choice likely becomes a bit easier!
We look forward to speaking with you as you check off the
experiences you’ll have after reviewing this guide. Whether it’s your
first haircut as a Reedie, your first meal at a Lebanese restaurant, or
your first service excursion, let us know what you think and what you
plan to do next! We thank you Reedies for your willingness to engage

Public Transit
Reedies can purchase subsidized monthly bus passes (half price!) at the Business
Office, and individual bus tickets can be purchased at the bookstore!
Buses
TriMet buses serve the Portland
metro area, and many bus lines
connect with MAX Light Rail, WES
Commuter Rail and the Portland
Streetcar. Hours of operation vary.
During the weekday morning and
afternoon rush hour, "Frequent
Service" buses run about every 15
minutes.
MAX Light Rail
TriMet's MAX (Metropolitan Area
Express) Light Rail connects
downtown Portland with Beaverton,
Clackamas, Gresham, Hillsboro,
North/Northeast Portland and the
Portland International Airport.
Trains run every 15 minutes or
better most of the day, every day.
Service is less frequent in the early
morning, mid-day and evening.
Portland Streetcar
The Portland Streetcar connects
Northwest Portland, the Pearl
District, Portland City Center, PSU,
RiverPlace and the South Waterfront
District. Hours of operation vary, but
streetcars run about every 13
minutes during the day (less
frequently in the evening and on
weekends). The Streetcar is owned
and operated by the City of
Portland, but is integrated with
TriMet service

WES Commuter Rail
TriMet's WES (short for Westside
Express Service) is a commuter rail
line serving Beaverton, Tigard,
Tualatin and Wilsonville. WES runs
every 30 minutes during the weekday
morning and afternoon rush hour.
