ThePSGcommunityalwayswelcomesstudents,andfullyone-thirdofourpresentationsthis yeararefromstudents.Remarkably,overtenpercentofthepapersarebeingpresentedbyour colleaguesfromJapan,showingboththeirincreasedseabirdresearcheffortsandparticipation inPSG.Wehavecomealongwaysincetheearly1980’swhenweweregratefulthatOgi-sanor Hasegawa-sanwereabletoattendedsomeofourmeetings. OregonandespeciallyPortlandhasbeenthecenterofMarbledMurreletmanagementfor years.GaryFalxaledtheteamofDeannaLynch,KimNelson,andMartinRaphael,toput togetheracomprehensivespecialpapersessionexamining“MarbledMurreletsFromSeasto Trees.”OpeningthemeetingandthespecialpapersessionwillbeaplenarytalkbyZachPeery summarizingthecurrentstatusandfuturedirectionsofMarbledMurreletscienceand conservation. OnFriday,DanielRobywillstartthedaywithanotherplenaryrelevanttothePacificNorthwest seabirdsbysummarizingtheworkofhisteamoverthepastdecadetounderstandtheecology ofCaspianTernsandothersalmon-eatingwaterbirds.Followingtheplenary,JoSmithhas organizedafulldayspecialpapersessionon‘SeabirdsandMarineSpatialPlanning.” Saturday,wereturntoourthemeofthemeetingcelebrating40yearsofseabirdscienceand conservationwithaplenarybyRobertRisebroughsummarizingahalf-centuryofworkon seabirdsandcontaminantsandexploringfuturedirectionsofresearchandconservation. 3 Throughoutthethreedaystherearegeneralpapersessionsinthebroadcategoriesof conservation,breedingbiology,foragingecology,contaminants,techniques,anddistribution andthreatsatsea.Ihavetriedtoavoidconflictsofpapersofsimilarspeciesorsubjects,and apologizeifyoureallywantedtoseetwopapersthatoccuratthesametime,butthatisalways aproblematPSG,becausetherearesomanyinterestingpapers. Specialpapersessions MarbledMurrelets,FromSeastoTrees-NewScienceonEcologyandManagementof MarbledMurreletsConvener:GaryFalxa ThePacificSeabirdGrouphasbeenaleaderintheconservationoftheMarbledMurrelet (Brachyramphusmarmoratus)sincetheearly1980’s,andheldthefirstMarbledMurrelet symposiumin1987.Anongoingconservationconcernhasbeenthelarge-scalelossoftheoldgrowthforestsinwhichthespeciesnestsacrossmostofitsrange.Gillnetsandoilspillshave alsoposedriskstothespecies,asmaychangesinpreycommunities.Asaresultofthese threatsandpopulationdeclines,thespecieshasbeenlistedas“threatened”bothinCanada andintheUnitedStatessouthofAlaska.Inthisspecialpapersession,presentationswillfocus onnewknowledgeaboutthespecies.FollowingtheplenarytalkonthestateofMarbled Murreletscienceandconservation,speakersinthesessionwillprovideup-to-dateresultsfrom researchandconservationworkfromAlaskatonorthernCalifornia.Topicsspanbothterrestrial andmarinehabitats,anddiverseaspectsofmurreletbiology,conservationstatus,and management.Severalpresentationsdiscussnewmonitoringandresearchtools,andinitial effortstoactivelyenhanceforesthabitatformurrelets.Thesessionwillwrapupwith presentationsontheperspectivesfromtheconservationcommunity,andarecentevaluation 8 ofthespecies’statusandconservationneedsatthesouthernendofitsrangeinCalifornia, Oregon,andWashington. SeabirdsandMarineSpatialPlanningConvener:JoSmith Marinespatialplanning(MSP)isapublicprocesstoanalyseandallocatethespatialand temporaldistributionofhumanactivitiesinapracticalway,balancingthedemandsfor developmentwithprotectingthemarineenvironment.Marinespatialplanningisusually specifiedthroughapoliticalprocesstoachievemultipleobjectivesandaddressecological, economicandsocialvalues.Marinespatialplanningisawell-describedprocessthatrequires excellentspatialdatasourcesformarinespecies,habitatsandhumanactivities.Whilethe stepsforMSPlookgreatonpaper,actualprocessesspanyears,ifnotdecades,andamarine ornithologist'sexposuretothefullprocessisrare.ParticipationbyscientistsinMSPmaybe infrequentordisconnectedfromthegoverningauthority,yetthedesiretocollectand contributerelevantdataremainsstrong. Inthisspecialpapersession,presentationsfrommarinepolicyexpertsandscientistswill provideconcreteexamplesformostofthestepsinamarinespatialplanningprocess.Speakers willbeginthesessionbyintroducingtheauthorityandneedforspatialplanningintheUSA, Canada,andNorthSea.Scientistswillthenusefieldstudies,models,andinnovativetechniques todefineandanalysecurrentconditions,resolvespatialconflictswithhumanuses,discuss predictiveapproachesforfutureconditions,addressmonitoringissues,anddevelopmarine birdindicators.WithresearchfromJapantotheAtlantic,andtheArctictoSouthAmerica,this specialpapersessionwillincreaseunderstandingofMSPandtherolethatseabirdbiologists canplayinensuringhighqualitydataareusedtoinformmarineplanningdecisions. Plenaryspeakers ZachPeeryreceivedaB.Sc.fromtheUniversityof California,SanDiegoin1993,aM.Sc.inWildlifeBiologyfrom HumboldtStateUniversityin1996,andPh.D.fromthe UniversityofCalifornia,Berkeleyin2004.HisMaster’s researchinvolvedstudyingthedemographyandhabitat associationsofSpottedOwlsintheSouthwesternUnited States.HisPh.D.researchinvolvedstudyingboththe terrestrialandmarineecologyofMarbledMurreletsin centralCalifornia.Thisresearchinvolvedacombinationof radio-telemetryandmark-recapturemethodstoidentifyand monitornests,estimatepopulationtrends,andunderstand demographicandenvironmentalfactorslimitingthe population.FollowinghisPhDstudies,Dr.Peeryheldjoint post-doctoralresearchpositionsattheMuseumof VertebrateZoologyatUCBerkeleyandMossLandingMarineLaboratoriesfrom2005to2008. Duringthistime,heusedgenetictoolstocharacterizehistoricchangesinconnectivityamong murreletpopulationsandunderstandfactorsinfluencingdispersal.In2008,Dr.Peeryjoined 9 thefacultyoftheDepartmentofForestandWildlifeEcologyattheUniversityofWisconsinMadison.AtUW-Madison,hisprimaryresearchinterestsincludethestudyofendangered speciesandthedevelopmentandintegrationofmethodsindemographyandconservation genetics.Hecontinueshispopulationandgeneticstudiesofmarbledmurrelets,andhas initiatedastudyofSteller’sJaysinvestigatingthescaleatwhichhuman-derivedfoodssubsidize jaypopulationandthreatenMarbledMurrelets.HeisalsotheprincipalinvestigatorofalongtermdemographicstudyofCaliforniaSpottedOwlsinthecentralSierraNevada,anNSF-funded studyofthebehavioralecologyoftwo-andthree-toedslothsinCostaRica,andfreshwater turtlesinWisconsin.HisteachingresponsibilitiesatUW-Madisonincludealarge undergraduatecoursetitledExtinctionofSpeciesthatcoversbiologicalandsocialissues responsibleforthecurrentbiodiversitycrisis,aswellasgraduatecoursestitledDemographic MethodsandConservationGenetics. DanRobyistheUnitLeader–Wildlifeatthe U.S.GeologicalSurvey-OregonCooperativeFish andWildlifeResearchUnitandProfessorof WildlifeEcologyintheDepartmentofFisheries andWildlifeatOregonStateUniversity.He receivedaB.A.(Biology)fromAntiochCollegein 1974,aM.S.(WildlifeManagement) fromtheUniversityofAlaskaFairbanksin1978, andaPh.D.(Biology)fromtheUniversityof Pennsylvaniain1986,whereheworkedunder ProfessorRobertE.Ricklefsontherelationshipof diettoreproductiveenergeticsinseabirds.InadditiontohiscurrentpositionatOregonState University,hehasheldfacultypositionsatSouthernIllinoisUniversity–Carbondale(Assistant ProfessorofZoology,1988-1992)andtheUniversityofAlaskaFairbanks(AssistantProfessorof WildlifeEcology,1992-1995).DanhasconductedresearchontheecologyofseabirdsinAlaska, Hawaii,Greenland,Newfoundland,SouthGeorgia,andAntarctica,aswellasthroughoutthe PacificNorthwestregionoftheU.S.Hisprimaryareaofresearchinterestisthephysiological ecologyandconservationbiologyofbirds,withanemphasisonseabirds.Hisrecentresearch includesimpactsofavianpredationonrecoveryofESA-listedsalmonidsintheColumbiaRiver Basin,effectsoftheExxonValdezoilspillonseabirdsinAlaska,seabird/fisheriesinteractions, andeffectsofglobalclimatechangeonseabirdpopulationsathighlatitudes.HeservedasChair ofthePacificSeabirdGroupduring2005-2006andwaselectedaFellowoftheAmerican Ornithologists’Unionin2008. BobRisebroughIgrewupinsouthernOntario, partbird-watcher,partacademicnerd.Ishedthe academicnerdpart,atleasttemporarily,bynot finishinghighschoolinordertofollowthespring migrationatLongPointandPointPeleeontheLake Erieshoreline.IthenhitchhikedtoMichigantosee Kirtland’swarblers,toBonaventureIslandforthe firstseabirds,andontoNovaScotia.There, however,IsignedanapplicationtoCornellthatmy 10 motherhadsentme.AtthattimeCornellhadadon’task–don’ttellpolicyonhighschool diplomas. AtCornellafriendshipdevelopedwithWalterBockthatintroducedmetothepublicationsof ErnstMayr,andthatincludedmanylongdiscussionsaboutevolutionandasummerinternship attheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistory.Interestinevolutionbroadenedtoinclude geneticsand,inagraduateprogramatHarvardwithJimWatson,molecularbiology.Those wereexcitingtimes–thediscoveryofmessengerRNA.FromJimIlearnedtoappreciatethe beautyin,andrespectfor,theintegrityofascientificargument.HewasdisappointedwhenI didnotgoontoapost-docandanacademiccareerbutinsteaddroveofftoSouthAmericain myLandRovertospendsixmonthsontheGalapagos.Buthisinfluenceremainsdeeply appreciated. ThereweretwoexpeditionsoftheWoodsHoleOceanographicInstitutiontotheIndianOcean ontheR.V.AtlantisandtheR.V.AtlantisII.ThefirststopwasBermuda,whereDavidWingate wasbeginninghisprogramtorescuetheBermudaPetrelfromextinction.Identificationofthe seabirdswasthepreoccupationduringthosemanymonthsatsea.
