beginnings of world renowned Johnson Controls
Corporation, traced to a 1908 patent for a
thermostatic control device. It was successfully
installed in Milwaukee’s Grand Pfister Hotel, the
first to offer independent room temperature
control. 100 years later, Johnson Controls is a
world leader in control and automation systems.

First Centennial Series
First Centennial Series
This special, commemorative edition patent
plaque is reminiscent of historic patent covers
from the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries. Embracing Grecian architectural
elements, this elegant plaque is a visual
testament to invention. It features a beautiful
engraving of the old Patent Office building in
Washington, D.C., finished with an acanthus leaf
border. This enduring engraving of the Patent
Office served on all patent covers from 1880
through 1926.

As a monument to inventorship, the original
Patent Office building in Washington, D.C. is
a historical landmark of American ingenuity.
Designed by William Parker Elliot, it embraces
elegant Grecian Doric architecture adorned
with a portico of columns. Construction took
over 30 years, starting in 1836. PTO-01

Portrait Gallery.

Second Centennial Series
The Second Centennial series is an exquisite example of patent cover
engravings from the past. This cover design was adopted in 1932 to
commemorate the landmark relocation of the Patent Office to the U.S.
Department of Commerce. The relocation shifted Patent Offices to the
Commerce building, which appears finely etched with intricate details.
This cover design initially featured the old Patent Office building. It
was revised to reflect the 1932 Patent Office relocation.

The story of the patent models is one of incredible
ingenuity and creativity. They were required with
most U.S. patent applications through the 1800’s
when literally hundreds of thousands of models
poured into the Patent Office. They were working
demonstrations of each patent and were often so
intricate that they exceeded the invention itself in
terms of wonderment. Their story is elegantly
recited in an article by U.S. Patent Services’
founder Ries Brumder Hansen, written for the
Milwaukee Public Museum’s nationally recognized
magazine, LORE (Vol. 47, #2, Autumn 1997). In

Patent Reproductions
Each invention is granted legal private
status by a single number and a single
official document from the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office. By tradition, only
one document exists per patent, despite
the contributions of multiple inventors.

Theodore T. Gall – Desk Sculpture
Mr. Gall began his career in the mid-sixties as an animator
for teaching films. In 1973 he began a 22 year association
with automotive gasket manufacturer Fel-Pro Incorporated
as "Artist in Residence.” He designed all corporate
awards as well as numerous sculptures incorporating
the shapes and essential materials of the firms products.
He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the
American Academy of Art. Although his work has
not been limited to the human form, it has been his
primary focus throughout his career. Gall has exhibited
and garnered awards throughout the country.
