SINCE 1774
BIRKENSTOCK is a German success story. The historical roots of this family-run company go back to at least 1774: Johann Adam
Birkenstock was listed in the church archives of Langenbergheim, a city in Hesse, as a “subject and cobbler”. Around 120 years
later (1896), Konrad Birkenstock opened two shoe shops in Frankfurt am Main and began producing footbeds. In 1963, BIRKENSTOCK
launched the “Madrid” model: its first pair of sandals. They were a global success. In 1982, the first five models of the toe grip sandal
followed. Over the years, the product range continued to grow. Today it contains around 800 items. BIRKENSTOCK has been a global
player for over 40 years. It produces most of its products in Germany and sells them in over 80 countries. The BIRKENSTOCK Group
headquarters is in Neustadt (Wied). In Germany, the company has seven production locations in North Rhine-Westphalia, RhinelandPalatinate, Hesse and Saxony. Worldwide, BIRKENSTOCK employs around 2,500 people.

HEALTHY STRIDE
Our shoes have a direct impact on how we
walk. That’s why it’s so important that they fit
correctly — for standing, as well as for walking. So we offer our contoured footbed in two
widths: the normal width for normal feet, and
the smaller width for narrower feet. In combination with the adjustable straps on the shoe
uppers, our customers receive a tailor-made
shoe that is perfectly fitted to their feet.

BIRKENSTOCK FOOTBED
BIRKENSTOCK is the inventor of the first flexible contoured cork footbed in the world. What’s more, the origins of the word “footbed”
can be traced to our family business, which has been in continuous operation for over 240 years. It remains the core of all of our
models, based on the print of a foot in the sand.
Only the best raw materials are used to make our original footwear: natural cork, the finest jute and high-quality natural latex.
These premium-grade materials make our shoes extremely comfortable, and help the foot to maintain a pleasant temperature.

THE FOOTBED IN CROSS SECTION
LAYER BY LAYER
PURE FUNCTION
The most important element of BIRKENSTOCK items is the anatomically shaped cork and latex footbed. Four matched layers
provide a special comfort. Directly underneath the sole of the foot begins the bedding with a velvety, supple suede leather cover
sole. This absorbs moisture and forwards it to an underlying, tightly woven jute layer. Next comes the absorbing, flexible corklatex core, which receives and supports every step. The bedding is completed by another coarse jute layer, which serves to stabilise.
A soft feel without a long wearing-in process ensures the BIRKENSTOCK soft footbed. The special feature of this particular corklatex footbed: directly below the suede leather cover sole you find a permanently elastic latex core. The core gently cushions every
step and always returns automatically to its original, flexible-elastic form.

NATURAL LEATHER
Natural leather can be recognized by its characteristic untreated surface. We do not alter natural
variations in the leather. Thus, its natural qualities
remain intact.
BIRKO-FLOR®
Birko-Flor® is a skin-friendly, strong, easy-care
material. Its upper layer has a structure similar to
leather. The underside is made of soft fleece.
SMOOTH LEATHER
Smooth leather is very fine-grained and has an even
surface. It is weather-resistant and features an extremely long lifespan.
WOOL FELT
Our high-quality wool felt is 100 per cent natural
and is made of pure, breathable wool.
SUEDE LEATHER
We use high-quality, durable suede. That makes our
suede sandals and clogs sturdy, but also soft and
comfortable.
FELT
The synthetic felt we use for our products is very
strong, supple and breathable.
NUBUCK LEATHER
Nubuck leather is created by sanding the natural
grain of the leather. This process gives the leather
a fine nap.
BIRKO-FELT
Birko-Felt is made of a rayon blend and synthetic
felt. This extremely hard-wearing fabric is breathable and skin-friendly.

MATERIALS
BIRKENSTOCKS are a life decision, since our products last for decades. For that reason, all of our raw materials must meet the
highest standards of quality. We use high-quality leather for our sandals and shoes. The leather is unsplit, with a smooth upper
surface and a fibrous underside. In addition, we only use deeply dyed leather; the dye permeates the piece of leather completely.
That allows the leather to remain open-pored and breathable.
We also utilize high-quality wool felt — a natural product that consists only of sheep’s wool, making it durable and breathable.
The quality of all of the materials used in our shoes is verified, and we can continuously track the production process, from the raw
materials to manufacturing. We confirm this through regular testing by independent institutions.
