Typical applications include tank farms, diverter valves, valve skids, and valve banks. Accurately detecting the position of the valve is critical for process control. Traditionally, switchboxes have been used for position feedback. However, switchboxes are large, mounting is complex and malfunction is common. ifm offers a low-profile, non-contact solution that accurately detects when a valve is open or closed. An ifm valve position feedback solution includes a sensor, cable assembly and a rotating target puck. These devices are connected back to a PLC which monitors valve position. With the growing number of valves being used and minimal plant floor space available, wiring has become timeconsuming and difficult to troubleshoot. To reduce wiring, a simple solution is to apply the AS-i networking system. AS-i networks an entire system of valves with only one 2-wire cable, completely eliminating wire bundles. Valve position sensors with AS-i connectivity provide an integrated connection for the solenoid valve. Connection to the control unit is made with a 2-wire AS-i cable. This solution provides remote indication of valve status and can connect to higher level bus systems via DeviceNet, Profibus, and Ethernet. Up to 62 quarter-turn valve feedback devices and 62 solenoids can be connected to one AS-i master. • Connects to higher-level bus systems An ifm AS-i valve feedback solution includes a sensor, cable assembly, rotating target puck and AS-i cable Target puck AS-i valve sensor DIN connector AS-i cable • Provides non-contact valve position • Sensor and puck feature low-profile design that is one-quarter the size of a switchbox Step 1: Select an ifm valve position sensor • The valve sensor uses an integrated output for the solenoid valve. The sensor continuously detects the position of rising stem valves with a stroke of up to 80mm. The sensor is placed on top of the the valve stem with an adapter. Using the sensor’s pushbutton setup, the open and closed positions of the valve are established. The sensor indicates three key positions of the valve: valve open, valve closed and any intermediate position, e.g., seat lift. efector valvis sends this information to a controller. The efector valvis sensor reliably detects the position of the stem at a resolution of 0.2mm and eliminates all mechanical adjustments and significantly reduces setup time of a valve. Single seat and double seat valves For double seat valves, efector valvis detects the open, closed and seat lift cleaning position. For single seat valves, the sensor detects the open and closed positions and provides an additional output for seal contact wear. The sensor eliminates adjustments and the need to mount multiple sensors. Switchpoints are taught via the pushbutton setup. 38 www.ifm.com efector valvis provides continuous feedback of rising stem valve position. A common challenge in many food processing applications is determining the accurate level of food in a hopper due to “hills and valleys” that are created by shifting product. The compact, easy-to-use O3D Level Sensor can view an entire area of food product to determine its overall volume. O3D Level Sensor offer solutions to typical food processing applications Bread baking The O3D Level sensor can detect if bread pans are underfilled or overfilled for proper food production. Raw materials in feeders/conveyors Potatoes in 3D Challenge: point level is not an indication of true level Solution: ifm’s Level Sensor uses an array of sensing elements to indicate true level Ultrasonic or optical point level sensors monitor only a single point versus an entire area. When “hills and valleys” are present in the product, accurate level is not actually indicated. ifm’s O3D Level Sensor monitors the entire area of a hopper. The sensor then averages out the “hills and valleys” to provide an accurate indication of level. 44 www.ifm.com The O3D Level Sensor can detect raw materials in feeders and on vibratory conveyors. The steam pigtail (also known as siphon or condensate loop) is commonly used to protect instruments from exposure to high temperature. As steam loses heat, it condenses back into water (known as condensate). The temperature of the condensate is much lower than the temperature of the saturated steam. The geometry of the pigtail allows the steam to condense through the loop and provides an isolating temperature barrier for the sensor. Very large temperature reductions with the pigtail The chart at right gives an approximation of the temperature reduction when using a steam pigtail. Use the following steps: 1. Find steam pressure across the bottom axis. Example shows 150 psi. 2. Go straight up on the chart to the curve for ambient temperature. Example shows 80 °F. 3. Go straight across to find the estimated temperature at the instrument. Example shows approximately 128 °F. 58 www.ifm.com Estimated instrument temperature (°F) The UP0011 steam pigtail from ifm includes a 1/2” NPT male process connection for the steam line, a manual isolation valve and a 1/4” NPT male connection to fit any of the pressure sensors on the opposite page. Steam pigtail protects ifm pressure sensors from high temperatures in steam lines. 170 160 °F 150 100 90 140 80 130 128°F 120 70 60 50 Ambient temperature curves (°F) 110 100 90 100 200 300 400 500 600 psig 448 470 489 °F 338 150 388 422 psig Saturated steam pressure (saturated temperature) 0 50 298 Pressure sensors DC • PN series pressure sensors Type Overpressure / Burst Pressure [psi] Measuring Range [psi] Switchpoint Setting Range [psi] Scalable Analog Start Point* [psi] Scalable Analog End Point* [psi] Process Connection Supply Voltage [V] Part No. M12 connector · PNP / NPN switching and one 4…20 mA/0…10 V scalable analog output Medium temperature range: 18…176 °F / -25…80 °C -0.74…14.5 145 / 450 -0.68…14.5 -0.74…5.8 2.9…14.5 1/4” NPT 20…30 DC PN 2227 -1.45…36.3 290 / 725 -1.5…36.3 -1.8…14.5 73…36.3 1/4” NPT 20…30 DC PN 2226 -14.5…145 1088 / 2175 -12.8…145 -14.5…49.4 25.4…145 1/4” NPT 20…30 DC PN 2224 -14.5…362.7 1450 / 5075 -11.5…362.5 -14.5…145 76…362.5 1/4” NPT 20…30 DC PN 2223 Company Position sensors Vision sensors * Analog scaling turndown: 4:1 AC • PN series pressure sensors Safety technology 1/2” Micro AC connector · Solid state relay output Medium temperature range: 18…176 °F / -25…80 °C 0…14.5 150 / 430 0.1…14.5 – – 1/4” NPT 90…250 AC PN 4227 0…36.3 290 / 725 0.4…36.3 – – 1/4” NPT 90…250 AC PN 4226 0…145 1088 / 2175 1…145 – – 1/4” NPT 90…250 AC PN 4224 0…363 1450 / 5075 4…363 – – 1/4” NPT 90…250 AC PN 4223 Accessories Description Steam pigtail, 1/2” NPT steam line connection Protective cover, polyurethane Mounting clamp www.ifm.com Part No. UP 0011 Type Industrial networks Identification systems Cordsets Type Process sensors Description Part No. M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 5 m, PVC EVT 001 M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 10 m, PVC EVT 002 M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 25 m, PVC EVT 003 M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 5 m, PVC EVT 004 M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 10 m, PVC EVT 005 M12 Micro DC (4-pin), 25 m, PVC EVT 006 1/2” Micro AC (5-pin), 5 m, PVC (for PN4) E 18238 1/2” Micro AC (5-pin), 10 m, PVC (for PN4) E 18239 1/2” Micro AC (5-pin), 5 m, PVC (for PN4) E 18240 1/2” Micro AC (5-pin), 10 m, PVC (for PN4) E 18241 E 30006 E10077 59 Machine condition monitoring Wiring technology Flow sensors Flow sensors Thermal sensing principle with no moving parts is more reliable than mechanical switches Versatile adapter system for various sanitary connections LED bar graph display for flow and setpoint Easy pushbutton setup with flexible mounting Versions are available with standard NPT fittings for non-sanitary applications Flow sensors for sanitary applications The SI series flow sensors for sanitary applications are solid state alternatives to mechanical flow switches for sensing the flow rate of liquids and gases. Challenge Solution Bulky traditional head transmitters are costly and are subject to moisture ingress. ifm’s compact TP transmitter is rated to withstand liquid ingress and provide reliable temperature indication Error sources from screw terminals, wiring mistakes, and fluid ingress are eliminated. An integrated LED gives local indication that the transmitter is powered and transmitting. Completely configurable Compatible with any Pt100 or Pt1000 probe, the TP temperature module verifies the type of RTD and automatically makes the correct settings. Usable with 2, 3, or 4-wire RTDs, the TP can be scaled and offset using ifm’s USB interface. With it’s “overmolded” construction, the TP is suitable for harsh environments allowing for use in almost any application. New RTDs with integrated Tri-clamp® process connections The TM 48xx and TM 49xx RTDs do not require a separate sanitary process adapter. The one-piece RTD probe with integrated Tri-clamp connection eliminates potential septic ingress points. ifm’s revolutionary design incorporates a very thin sensor sheath which minimizes the amount of thermal mass separating the RTD element from the process media. This innovative design results in an extremely fast 1…3 second response speed. The RTD probes can be used with a RTD card on a plc rack, on a temperature controller and on ifm’s TR sensors (pages 68 - 69). 62 www.ifm.com NE W Temperature modules and RTDs Transmitter modules Type Output Scalable Analog Start Point Factory Preset Range Scalable Analog End Point In Steps of Supply Voltage [V] Part No. TP temperature transmitter module · Analog output A 4…20 mA -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…563 °F (-50…295 °C) -49…572 °F (-45…300 °C) 0.1 °F (0.1 °C) 20...32 DC TP 3231 4…20 mA -58…572 °F (-50…300 °C) -58…563 °F (-50…295 °C) -49…572 °F (-45…300 °C) 0.1 °F (0.1 °C) 20...32 DC TP 3232 4…20 mA 0…300 °F (-18…149 °C) -58…563 °F (-50…295 °C) -49…572 °F (-45…300 °C) 0.1 °F (0.1 °C) 20...32 DC TP 3233 4…20 mA 32…212 °F (0…100 °C) -58…563 °F (-50…295 °C) -49…572 °F (-45…300 °C) 0.1 °F (0.1 °C) 20...32 DC TP 3237 0…10 V 32…212 °F (0…100 °C) -58…563 °F (-50…295 °C) -49…572 °F (-45…300 °C) 0.1 °F (0.1 °C) 18...32 DC TP 9237 Position sensors Vision sensors Pt100 RTD probes Insertion Depth RTD Diameter 1” / 1.5” Tri-Clamp® 1.2” (30 mm) 6 mm 1” / 1.5” Tri-Clamp® 1.9” (50 mm) 6 mm 1” / 1.5” Tri-Clamp® 3.9” (100 mm) 6 mm 1” / 1.5” Tri-Clamp® 5.9” (150 mm) 6 mm 2” Tri-Clamp® 1.2” (30 mm) 6 mm 2” Tri-Clamp® 1.9” (50 mm) 6 mm 2” Tri-Clamp® 3.9” (100 mm) 6 mm 2” Tri-Clamp® 5.9” (150 mm) 6 mm Type Company Process Connection Temperature Range °F (°C) Response Time T05 / T09 (s) ** Part No. 1/3 TM 4801 1/3 TM 4811 1/3 TM 4831 1/3 TM 4841 1/3 TM 4901 1/3 TM 4911 1/3 TM 4931 1/3 TM 4941 Safety technology Pt100 RTD probes, 316L stainless steel* B -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) -58…302 °F (-50…150 °C) * For additional RTD probes, please see page 69. ** T05 / T09 is the time to reach 50% / 90% of temperature change. The number of binary actuators and sensors placed on a typical system has grown over the years. Current methods for wiring include point-to-point connection or bus systems. However, point-to-point wiring results in large wire bundles, and bus systems can be too complex for networking simple binary devices. As a solution to these challenges, ifm offers the Actuator Sensor interface (AS-i), a simple network for actuators and sensors. AS-i is cost-effective, easy to install, and features modular components that offer design flexibility. AS-i is a complete networking solution for industrial control applications. The AS-i network connects hundreds of sensors on a single two-wire cable. AS-i I/O modules use quick plug-and-play functionality that simplifies installation. AS-i is a simple solution for networking actuators and sensors An AS-interface network offers a simple, cost-efficient alternative to conventional cabling at the lowest level of the automation. This network can operate directly in conjunction with an existing PLC or can be linked to a higher-level bus system for low-cost remote I/O. AS-interface is tailored to the needs of devices such as sensors and actuators where low connection cost per node is critical and simplicity is essential. Global support for AS-interface ifm engineers can help design and implement an AS-interface network on industrial equipment. On-site technical support is available and application assistance is immediate by calling our technical support hotline: 800-441-8246. Aggressive product development ifm is committed to investing in new product development for AS-interface. Our goal is to improve functionality, simplify installation and maintain competitive price points. Before Point-to-point wiring is still the most common wiring method found in industry. One cable from each device results in large wire bundles running through the system. Due to the sheer volume of wires, installation time is considerable and troubleshooting is complex. After AS-i network connects multiple binary devices with only one 2-wire cable, completely eliminating wire bundles. Its simple, plug-and-play wiring supports all topologies and eliminates device profiles and expensive hardware. ifm is an AS-interface founding member ifm efector is one of 11 founding members of the AS-Interface Association, established in 1990. AS-i is a non-profit independent organization that is currently supported by more than 100 vendors worldwide. 72 www.ifm.com Actuator Sensor-interface overview Industrial Ethernet and AS-i networking offer the best of both worlds A simple 2-wire flat cable The normal collection of wire bundles are replaced by a single, two-wire flat cable that carries both data and power. Insulation displacement Insulation displacement technology enables fast connection to all devices. The cable is pierced to make the electric connection and features a mechanical profile to proper insure polarity. Company Position sensors Flexible topology AS-i supports topologies including open tree, ring, star, and trunk and drop lines to allow maximum design freedom. Vision sensors Extremely fast system Data transfer is fast – less than 10 ms on a fully-loaded system of 248 inputs and 186 outputs. Safety technology Process sensors Cost effective Since actuators and sensors are among the least expensive devices on a network, their connecting hardware should be comparable in price. AS-i’s price-per-point is one of the best in industry. Industrial networks Modular system AS-i’s design flexibility makes it a true plug-and-play networking system. Modular machines can be easily connected with the aid of splitter modules to form a production line. Identification systems Machine condition monitoring Best fit Actuator and sensor manufacturers developed AS-i for the sole purpose of connecting actuators and sensors. Every component on the network is specially designed to fit these binary devices. Wiring technology Industrial Ethernet (IE) is commonly applied as the networking protocol for automation and plant control. IE is well known in industry, can carry large packets of data, and is ideal for HMIs, PLCs, drives, and barcode scanners. For bit-level data such as sensors and actuators – which account for 90% of devices in automation – a lower level I/O network, such as AS-i, is better suited for these devices. AS-i offers a better alternative to wiring bit-level devices and is an ideal complement to Industrial Ethernet at the I/O level. A single Ethernet IP address can transmit up to 992 I/O points. AS-i uses quick plug-and-play functionality that simplifies installation in the controls architecture. Compressed gases are considered one of the most expensive sources of energy consumption in a plant. By identifying leakage areas, efector Metris can optimize compressed gas usage, improve system performance, and reduce energy costs. The compact sensor is fitted with an integrated pipe to ensure easy mounting and proper installation depth. The sensor’s 4-digit numeric display provides air and gas consumption readings and features microprocessor-based pushbutton setup. Three display options are available: cubic feet per minute, cubic feet per hour, and total consumed cubic feet. The 24 VDC unit provides switching, analog and pulse output options. Operating principle efector Metris incorporates two ceramic sensing elements that each contain a thermistor. As one sensor element is heated, the second element is used as a reference. Power is then altered to the heater to ensure a constant temperature difference (CTD) between the two elements. 90 www.ifm.com/us efector metris can be mounted in a supply pipe to monitor one machine. Or, mounted in a plant zone to monitor several machines.
