Demanding applications
ifm magnetic proximity sensors provide non-contact indication for position and
speed applications. The sensors can detect a magnet through materials such as
stainless steel, non-ferrous metal, aluminum, plastic and wood. With the integration
of Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) technology, ifm magnetic sensors offer extremely
long sensing ranges – up to 76 mm – and high switching frequencies.
Long sensing range and high switching frequency
Magnetic sensors have a considerably higher sensing range compared to inductive
sensors. They detect damping magnets without contact up to 76 mm. ifm sensors
reach a switching frequency of more than 5,000 Hz. This high switching frequency
applies to the whole temperature range.
Position and speed application examples:

ifm's OG Series photoelectric sensors are designed and tested to provide reliable
position detection in extreme washdown conditions. Industry standard 18mm
diameter housings are 316 stainless steel and are ideal for food and beverage
applications. The OG wetline series was specially developed for applications in
the food industry, such as cheese plants, breweries and the meat industry.
A visible red light source simplifies installation and maintenance. High-grade
stainless steel mounting accessories are available for quick installation.
Ecolab-certified for food and beverage
The Ecolab-certified sensors are resistant to chemical solutions used in cleaning and
steam cleaning. The sensor's zero-leak design prevents ingress during high pressure
cleaning, and the sensor's plastic lens eliminates the possibility of glass splintering in
food and beverage processes.
Steam boiler test
To simulate the aging process, OG washdown sensors are placed in a steam
boiler at 80°C. After defined time intervals, the sensors are submerged into ice
water. Following the test, the sensor is subjected to a variety of function tests
that determine its durability.
The right combination of price and performance
ifm OG sensors offer high performance, long life-in-application and a great value
resulting in savings for your food processing facility.

for distance measurement applications
O1D Series sensors are ideal for long-range
background suppression applications
Model O1D 300 detects level of food
and opaque liquids
Simple pushbutton setup quickly
establishes parameters
Large 4-digit alphanumeric display
indicates measured distance
Multiple outputs: single switching, dual
switching or switching and analog output

values in inches, millimeters or meters.
Multiple O1D sensors can be mounted
in a food process.
Performance
ifm O1D advantage
Background suppression and ultrasonic
sensors are lower-cost alternatives for
distance measurement but have shorter
ranges. Traditional time-of-flight systems
offer an improved level of performance
but are much higher in cost. The ifm O1D
sensor combines the advantages of these
systems at an affordable price.

O5G Series clear object sensors
The O5G Series clear object sensors can solve one of the most difficult
photoelectric applications – the detection of clear objects such as film,
glass, or PET plastic bottles and transparent packaging. Standard sensors typically have too much excess gain and “burn“ through the clear
material. The sensor’s automatic calibration and quick pushbutton
setup enables reliable detection of clear objects.
The O5 detects proper
orientation in fastmoving applications.

Quarter-turn valve position sensors
Quarter-turn valves with pneumatic actuators are used for process control in food
processing applications. Typical applications include tank farms, diverter valves, valve
skids, and valve banks. Accurately detecting the position of the valve is critical for
process control. Traditionally, switchboxes have been used for position feedback.
However, switchboxes are large, mounting is complex and malfunction is common.
ifm offers a low-profile, non-contact solution that accurately detects when a valve is
open or closed.
An ifm valve position feedback
solution includes a sensor, cable
assembly and a rotating target puck.

Integrated AS-i networking connection for pneumatic valves
Valve applications such as tank farms and valve skids require
a large number of feedback devices. These devices are
connected back to a PLC which monitors valve position.
With the growing number of valves being used and minimal
plant floor space available, wiring has become timeconsuming and difficult to troubleshoot. To reduce wiring, a
simple solution is to apply the AS-i networking system.
AS-i networks an entire system of valves with only one 2-wire cable, completely
eliminating wire bundles. Valve position sensors with AS-i connectivity provide an
integrated connection for the solenoid valve. Connection to the control unit is made
with a 2-wire AS-i cable.
This solution provides remote indication of valve status and can connect to higher
level bus systems via DeviceNet, Profibus, and Ethernet. Up to 62 quarter-turn valve
feedback devices and 62 solenoids can be connected to one AS-i master.

Continuous position feedback of rising stem valves
The efector valvis rising stem valve position sensor is an innovative solution for
indicating the position of linear valves. The sensor continuously detects the position
of rising stem valves with a stroke of up to 80mm.
The sensor is placed on top of the the valve stem with an adapter. Using the sensor’s pushbutton setup, the open and closed positions of the valve are established.
The sensor indicates three key positions of the valve: valve open, valve closed and
any intermediate position, e.g., seat lift. efector valvis sends this information
to a controller.
The efector valvis sensor reliably detects the position of the stem at a resolution of
0.2mm and eliminates all mechanical adjustments and significantly reduces setup
time of a valve.
Single seat and double seat valves
For double seat valves, efector valvis detects the
open, closed and seat lift cleaning position. For
single seat valves, the sensor detects the open and
closed positions and provides an additional output
for seal contact wear.
The sensor eliminates adjustments
and the need to mount multiple
sensors. Switchpoints are taught
via the pushbutton setup.

O3D level sensor
First industrial 3D level sensor that
evaluates volume of food product
Accurately detects food level in bins and
hoppers and on vibratory conveyors
Ideal alternative to point-level sensors
that monitor only one point of reference
Sensor withstands harsh indoor and
outdoor environments
Provides switching and analog outputs for
application versatility
Compact sensor uses reliable time-offlight distance measurement
The right level measurement can help you improve your food processing
operation with higher accuracy and better efficiency
The O3D Level Sensor is designed to evaluate the volume and level of product in
food processing applications. A common challenge in many food processing
applications is determining the accurate level of food in a hopper due to “hills and
valleys” that are created by shifting product. The compact, easy-to-use O3D Level
Sensor can view an entire area of food product to determine its overall volume.
O3D Level Sensor offer solutions to
typical food processing applications
Bread baking
The O3D Level sensor
can detect if bread pans
are underfilled or
overfilled for proper
food production.
Raw materials in
feeders/conveyors
Potatoes in 3D
Challenge: point level is not an indication
of true level
Solution: ifm’s Level Sensor uses an array
of sensing elements to indicate true level
Ultrasonic or optical point level sensors monitor
only a single point versus an entire area. When
“hills and valleys” are present in the product,
accurate level is not actually indicated.
ifm’s O3D Level Sensor monitors the entire
area of a hopper. The sensor then averages out
the “hills and valleys” to provide an accurate
indication of level.

Non-contact, fail-safe inductive sensors for safety applications
ifm’s non-contact fail-safe sensors incorporate
inductive technology that detects standard metal
target material such as stainless or mild steel.
Coded magnets or mechanical keys are not
required as targets, greatly reducing installation
time and avoiding misalignment issues and
nuisance tripping. The sensors continuously
monitor the sensing window for target position
and dwell time. ifm’s non-contact fail-safe sensors may be used with any standard safety relay,
safety PLC and bus system.
Fail-safe sensors for series connection
Up to 10 non-contact, fail-safe sensors can be connected in a series with the ifm
clocked input versions. Ideal for monitoring multiple stations, such as robotics cells,
the fail-safe sensors will provide an output if one point along chain is stopped.
Using ifm’s quick disconnect T-piece connectors, wiring is greatly reduced.

Multi-function safety relays reduce stock levels
ifm’s multi-functional safety relays are compatible with industry standard safety devices. The versatile safety
relays connect single or dual channel emergency stops, mechanical safety switches, transistor-based safety
devices, light curtains, two-hand controls and ifm’s non-contact safety sensors. All of these devices can be
monitored with one relay. The benefit is a large reduction in stock levels that eliminates the need for different
types of safety relays for various applications. Dual channel safety devices can be configured to monitor
simultaneous logic and cross fault detection across the inputs.

Curtains and grids help to protect plant personnel
ifm's safety light curtains and grids provide an optical solution for protecting plant
personnel in unsafe work areas. Unlike mechanical options such as safety gates and
pull-back restraints, ifm's hands-free solution eliminates excessive handling when
entering hazardous areas and using equipment.
ifm’s safety light curtains and grids consist of an emitter and receiver pair that create
a multi-beam barrier of infrared light in front of, or around, a hazardous area. When
any of the beams are blocked by intrusion in the sensing field, the light curtain
sends a signal to the machine’s e-stop.

Simple pushbutton setup allows the sensor to be adjusted in less than 5 minutes

Monitoring homogenization
Homogenizers are used to emulsify one liquid into another or to evenly distribute
solids throughout a liquid to improve the product’s stability and other characteristics. In the dairy industry, milk product is pumped into a homogenizer and, under
very high pressure, pushed through small screens. This breaks up the fat globules
in the milk and creates a consistent homogeneous mixture.
For repeatable process results, homogenizing pressure can be monitored and
controlled using ifm pressure sensors designed specifically for this purpose.
PY9970 is fitted with a mounting block and diaphragm seal filled with an FDAapproved fluid. PY9000 is designed to mount with fittings already existing on
the homogenizer.
ifm’s type PY pressure sensor is designed to
detect the pressure in a homogenizer.

Steam is used in many industrial applications for food processing, drying, building
heating, etc. with typical saturated steam parameters of 150 psi at 350 °F. Standard
pressure sensors are rated below 200 °F and sanitary pressure sensors are rated
below 300 °F. The steam pigtail (also known as siphon or condensate loop) is
commonly used to protect instruments from exposure to high temperature.
As steam loses heat, it condenses back into water (known as condensate). The temperature of the condensate is much lower than the temperature of the saturated
steam. The geometry of the pigtail allows the steam to condense through the loop
and provides an isolating temperature barrier for the sensor.
Very large temperature reductions
with the pigtail
The chart at right gives an approximation of
the temperature reduction when using a steam
pigtail. Use the following steps:
1. Find steam pressure across the bottom axis.
Example shows 150 psi.
2. Go straight up on the chart to the curve for
ambient temperature. Example shows 80 °F.
3. Go straight across to find the estimated
temperature at the instrument. Example
shows approximately 128 °F.

The UP0011 steam pigtail from ifm includes a 1/2” NPT male process connection for
the steam line, a manual isolation valve and a 1/4” NPT male connection to fit any
of the pressure sensors on the opposite page.
Steam pigtail protects ifm pressure sensors from
high temperatures in steam lines.

Flow sensors for sanitary applications
The SI series flow sensors for sanitary applications are solid state alternatives to
mechanical flow switches for sensing the flow rate of liquids and gases. Because
there are no moving parts to jam or break, ifm efector flow switches eliminate the
maintenance headaches of mechanical flow switches.
Switching output, mounts in process
The one-piece sensor includes an LED status display and stainless steel RTD probe
in a compact unit. The probe is inserted directly into the medium. Application
parameters are set using the microprocessor-based pushbutton setup. The sensor
detects when the flow rate falls above or below the flow setpoint.
Multiple sanitary mounting options
ifm efector sanitary sensors connect to industry standard adapters and fittings.
This flexibility allows the sensor to be easily installed in many different applications
that have various mounting requirements.
SI Series sanitary flow sensors verify the return
flow in CIP systems. The 316 stainless steel
sensing probe is resistant to damage from
solids and harsh chemicals in the fluid stream.

New RTDs provide excellent response time

element
TP module turns any RTD into a programmable
analog temperature transmitter
The innovative TP transmitter module with “plug and play” M12
connectors solves the common installation and environmental problems associated with conventional terminal chamber-head transmitters.
Challenge
Solution
Bulky traditional head
transmitters are costly
and are subject to
moisture ingress.
ifm’s compact TP
transmitter is rated to
withstand liquid ingress
and provide reliable
temperature indication
Error sources from screw terminals, wiring mistakes, and fluid ingress
are eliminated. An integrated LED gives local indication that the
transmitter is powered and transmitting.
Completely configurable
Compatible with any Pt100 or Pt1000 probe, the TP temperature
module verifies the type of RTD and automatically makes the correct
settings. Usable with 2, 3, or 4-wire RTDs, the TP can be scaled and
offset using ifm’s USB interface. With it’s “overmolded” construction,
the TP is suitable for harsh environments allowing for use in almost
any application.
New RTDs with integrated Tri-clamp® process connections
The TM 48xx and TM 49xx RTDs do not require a separate sanitary
process adapter. The one-piece RTD probe with integrated Tri-clamp
connection eliminates potential septic ingress points.
ifm’s revolutionary design incorporates a very thin sensor sheath which
minimizes the amount of thermal mass separating the RTD element
from the process media. This innovative design results in an extremely
fast 1…3 second response speed.
The RTD probes can be used with a RTD card on a plc rack, on a
temperature controller and on ifm’s TR sensors (pages 68 - 69).

Increased process safety
The TAD temperature transmitter features two high-precision and stable RTD measuring elements that monitor the process to ensure that a developing sensor drift is
detected and reliably diagnosed. If one element fails, the process continues with
the second measuring element (back-up function). Thus, no calibration is necessary.
With this technology, the TAD provides long-term, highly accurate temperature
indication in sanitary applications included in food, beverage and pasteurization
processes.
Using configuration software, drift thresholds and parameters can be easily set.
After the setpoints are established, the TAD continuously self-monitors temperature
drift. By providing immediate temperature drift detection, cyclical monitoring is no
longer necessary.

Actuator Sensor-interface
overview
Point-to-point wiring vs.
AS-i networking
Industrial automation systems require a large amount of
control devices. The number of binary actuators and sensors placed on a typical system has grown over the years.
Current methods for wiring include point-to-point
connection or bus systems. However, point-to-point
wiring results in large wire bundles, and bus systems can
be too complex for networking simple binary devices.
As a solution to these challenges, ifm offers the Actuator
Sensor interface (AS-i), a simple network for actuators
and sensors. AS-i is cost-effective, easy to install, and
features modular components that offer design
flexibility. AS-i is a complete networking solution for
industrial control applications.
The AS-i network connects hundreds of sensors on a single two-wire cable. AS-i
I/O modules use quick plug-and-play functionality that simplifies installation.
AS-i is a simple solution for networking
actuators and sensors
An AS-interface network offers a simple, cost-efficient
alternative to conventional cabling at the lowest level of the
automation. This network can operate directly in conjunction
with an existing PLC or can be linked to a higher-level bus
system for low-cost remote I/O.
AS-interface is tailored to the needs of devices such as
sensors and actuators where low connection cost per node
is critical and simplicity is essential.
Global support for AS-interface
ifm engineers can help design and implement an AS-interface
network on industrial equipment. On-site technical support is
available and application assistance is immediate by calling
our technical support hotline: 800-441-8246.
Aggressive product development
ifm is committed to investing in new product development
for AS-interface. Our goal is to improve functionality, simplify
installation and maintain competitive price points.
Before
Point-to-point wiring is still
the most common wiring
method found in industry.
One cable from each device
results in large wire bundles
running through the system.
Due to the sheer volume of
wires, installation time is
considerable and troubleshooting is complex.
After
AS-i network connects multiple binary devices with only
one 2-wire cable, completely
eliminating wire bundles. Its
simple, plug-and-play wiring
supports all topologies and
eliminates device profiles and
expensive hardware.
ifm is an AS-interface founding member
ifm efector is one of 11 founding members of the
AS-Interface Association, established in 1990. AS-i is a
non-profit independent organization that is currently
supported by more than 100 vendors worldwide.

Best fit
Actuator and sensor manufacturers developed AS-i for the sole purpose
of connecting actuators and sensors. Every component on the network
is specially designed to fit these binary devices.
Wiring
technology
Industrial Ethernet (IE) is commonly applied as the networking protocol for automation
and plant control. IE is well known in industry, can carry large packets of data, and is
ideal for HMIs, PLCs, drives, and barcode scanners.
For bit-level data such as sensors and actuators – which
account for 90% of devices in automation – a lower level
I/O network, such as AS-i, is better suited for these devices.
AS-i offers a better alternative to wiring bit-level devices
and is an ideal complement to Industrial Ethernet at the I/O
level. A single Ethernet IP address can transmit up to 992
I/O points. AS-i uses quick plug-and-play functionality that
simplifies installation in the controls architecture.

AS-i can be connected to existing control platforms in two different ways:
Controls and gateway connection
In many cases, a high level bus system is installed in the plant. These bus systems
are designed for complex controls equipment such as drives, bar code scanners, etc.
These networks are not optimized for simple on/off devices, such as sensors.
Therefore, an easy way to apply an AS-i network is via a gateway connection.
The gateway becomes a node on the higher level bus and allows the connection
of sensors and actuators at a competitive price point.
ifm's AS-i Controller-E is designed for DeviceNet and Ethernet IP networks. The
SmartLink DP is available for Profibus networks. All of ifm's controllers incorporate
user-friendly displays for setup and diagnostics and fast response of up to 992
digital I/O points using version 3.0.
Backplane master connection
Backplane masters are designed to fit into a standard card slot in a PLC rack. ifm's
backplane masters are available with single or dual master options. The dual master
is capable of communicating with 992 digital I/O points. Inputs and outputs are
mapped directly to the I/O tables in the plc and programmed via the standard plc
software. No additional software is required.

Power for the yellow AS-i cable
AS-i power supplies supply all devices connected to the yellow AS-i
cable. These are usually modules, connected sensors and intelligent actuators. They provide an increased voltage of approximately 30 volts which
is converted by the modules into 24 V required for input devices.
In order to ensure the decoupling between AS-i data and the supply,
only approved AS-i power supplies may be used. AS-i is an unshielded
bus system that transports data and supplies energy on the same pair of
conductors. Because the AS-i network is an unshielded system, the voltage must not be grounded for reasons of symmetry.
Standard 24 V power supplies cannot be used instead of AS-i power
supplies for network power.

316 stainless steel T-splitter for connection to the AS-i network
The ProcessLine T-splitter is the first AS-i splitter designed to withstand extreme
environments. The T-Splitter is 316 stainless steel and can be mounted directly in
harsh and abrasive environments. The splitter converts the yellow and black AS-i
flat cables into a single 4-pin M12 connector or can be used to branch out the
AS-i network. This is typically used to connect the ProcessLine I/O module to
the AS-i network. The T-Splitter has a compact, space-saving design and is easily
mounted with two screws.

ifm’s vibration monitors provide specific vibration monitoring on
components inside food processing equipment such as rolling element
bearings, rotational unbalances, and gear drive systems.
The system’s on-board microprocessor directly calculates the machine’s
vibration characteristics and compares them to the allowable limits.
When the vibration levels exceed the allowable limits, the system
automatically sets alarm outputs or transfers the data over an Ethernet
network connection.
Innovative software
ifm’s Octavis software makes implementing a
continuous vibration monitoring solution easy.
Programming is straightforward using the “wizard“
guided configuration software. Analysis tools
included in the programming software give
users the ability to remotely
evaluate the machine’s
condition. A bar graph display
provides a quick overview of the
entire machine’s operating conditions. The spectrum frequency
plots allow for comprehensive
analysis, and the trend history
chart plotter displays machine

Compact vibration sensors detect changing conditions of food processing
machinery to indicate machine damage
In most food plants, every piece of equipment has its own vibration level that can
change when it experiences unusual operating conditions. These changes can
indicate potential machine damage or failure.
The VK Series and VT Series vibration sensors are designed to permanently mount
on a machine to continuously monitor the machine’s vibration level. By detecting
vibration level changes when they first occur, these sensors can prevent food processing equipment from catastrophically failing, reduce secondary damage and
eliminate expensive downtime.
A drive motor system is monitored
to protect process equipment from
excessive vibration.

Compressed air and specialty gas meter
efector Metris monitors compressed air and specialty gases such as argon (Ar),
carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrogen (N2) to detect leakage areas and improve energy
efficiencies. Compressed gases are considered one of the most expensive sources
of energy consumption in a plant. By identifying leakage areas, efector Metris
can optimize compressed gas usage, improve system performance, and reduce
energy costs.
The compact sensor is fitted with an integrated pipe to ensure easy mounting and
proper installation depth. The sensor’s 4-digit numeric display provides air and gas
consumption readings and features microprocessor-based pushbutton setup. Three
display options are available: cubic feet per minute, cubic feet per hour, and total
consumed cubic feet. The 24 VDC unit provides switching, analog and pulse output
options.
Operating principle
efector Metris incorporates two ceramic sensing
elements that each contain a thermistor.
As one sensor element is heated, the second element is
used as a reference. Power is then altered to the heater
to ensure a constant temperature difference (CTD)
between the two elements.

ecolink M12 cordsets and patchcords for demanding applications
ifm has developed a complete line of M12 cordsets that provide reliable performance in aggressive washdown environments. The cordsets are designed with a 316
stainless steel coupling nut that offers excellent corrosion resistance and provides
the longest protection against freezing and rusting. The smooth, hexed-shaped
coupling nut cleans easily in extreme washdown conditions and withstands harsh
abrasives.
Designed and tested for food
and beverage applications
The cordset’s O-ring is manufactured with
EPDM, a chemically cross-linked elastomer that
offers excellent flexibility in fluctuating temperatures. EPDM provides ideal insulation resistance
and strength and offers protection in caustic
cleaning environments.
Cordsets for washdown environments are manufactured with high-grade stainless steel coupling
nuts, gold-plated contacts and an O-ring that is
compressed to permanently maintain its sealing
function. These cordsets operates in a broad range
of temperatures ranging from -20 to 105°C.

Why choose PVC cable material?
PVC is a polyvinylchloride material that offers excellent
mechanical strength and resistance to chemicals. PVC also
offers outstanding performance in a broad range of
temperature conditions and resists flame, heat, oxidation,
moisture and abrasion.
Advantages of EPDM O-rings
EPDM is a chemically cross-linked elastomer with excellent
flexibility at high and low temperatures. This material
provides exceptional insulation and strength as well as
resistance to abrasion. EPDM is particularly suited for the
caustic-cleaning environment found in the food and
beverage industry.
316 stainless steel coupling nuts are highly compatible with the food and beverage industry
316 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance which is necessary in the food and beverage
industry. Stainless steel offers the longest protection against freezing and rusting. The smooth external
hexed-shaped coupling nut aids in the cleaning process and withstands harsh abrasion.
