Quality Furniture is Worth The Investment by Derek Allen, Mennonite Furniture Plus - (Lambeth) Smart and Functional: Why Solid Wood Furniture Makes Sense for Students Mennonite Furniture Gets an A+ for Durability and Style As parents, we all know how rough kids can be on their things – especially when it’s time to head back to school. From clothes and supplies to electronics and toys, outfitting your child with all of the newest and trendiest in back-to-school gear can seem like a never ending expense. Luckily, that doesn’t have to be the case when it comes to finding back-to-school furnishings. Whether your child is just starting out on their educational journey, or heading back for another post-secondary degree, it’s reassuring to know that you can provide them with quality furniture that will stand up to homework projects and late night study sessions. While quality wood furniture often carries a higher price, it’s not unreasonable concerning just how much use you’ll receive from this one-time investment. I often say that quality wood furniture is a lot like a quality education. It’s an investment that pays off for many years to come. One solid wood desk that’s designed and manufactured by a master Mennonite craftsman can last your child their entire educational career – beginning in grade school and continuing through to a post graduate degree. The same certainly can’t be said for manmade wood furnishings and particleboard workstations. From kitchen tables to executive desks, solid wood furniture always earns the highest grade for quality, durability, and style. That’s because furniture that’s made from manufactured wood or particle board is far more likely to succumb to the stresses of daily use. One ill-timed stunt is all it takes to bring a flimsy manmade wood desk crumbling to the floor in an irreparable heap. Solid wood Mennonite furniture is built to withstand all sorts of wear and tear. From markers and glue, to October, 2011 piles of textbooks and notepaper, solid wood Mennonite furniture can withstand it all – and then some! From dings and scratches, to dents and watermarks, solid wood furniture can take the abuse without any visible signs of distress. Solid wood furniture is also extremely fashionable. Purchase a bed for your teenager today, and that same bed will still look new and modern when he graduates from college. Instead of purchasing something juvenile for your child during this year’s back to school rush, consider making a long-term investment in style. Sure race car beds and miniature desks look cute in the store, but what happens when your child outgrows both in a year? Investing in a durable bedroom set or homework station now ensures that your child will have a great place to study and grow both today, tomorrow, and for many years to come. As parents, we all know how important it is to prepare our kids for their daily struggles. We provide them with healthy meals, make sure they have warm clothes, and do our best to answer any of their questions about life. Children are our investment in the future, so it’s important that we do whatever we can to make sure they’re ready for the challenges they’ll encounter as they grow. Solid wood furniture can go a long way to ensure these needs are properly taken care of. Many meals will be served on your sturdy kitchen table, clothes will be safely stored in a durable armoire, and many questions will be answered correctly on a solid wood desk. Derek Allen PAGE 4 The Forest City Connection Delivering Results at the Point of Impact ? Good dogs sometimes find themselves facing a little bad luck. Luckily, animal shelters such as London Humane Society are there to provide a safe and loving home for these dogs as they wait for their second chance. The makers of PEDIGREE® have teamed up with London Humane Society and 29 other animal shelters across Canada for the fourth annual PEDIGREE ADOPTION DRIVE® campaign to show that shelter dogs are good dogs and to raise awareness of the importance of dog adoption. As a part of the PEDIGREE ADOPTION DRIVE® campaign, London Humane Society will receive a maximum donation of $5,000 Canadian in 2011 from the makers of PEDIGREE®, and will also be featured on the company’s web site. Additional program activities will help increase awareness for the shelter. “We are thrilled to be a part of the PEDIGREE ADOPTION DRIVE®,” said Judy Foster, Executive Director, London Humane Society. “We work with an extremely tight budget, and the donation from the makers of PEDIGREE® will help us help keep our shelter dogs happy and healthy while they wait for their new family to adopt them.” To help show all Canadians that shelter dogs are good dogs, the makers of PEDIGREE® have launched a series of Adoption Stories videos online at www.mypedigree.ca that feature real-life shelter dogs – Bootsie and Phoenix. For every view of the Adoption Stories videos, the makers of PEDIGREE® will donate $1 dollar Canadian, up to a maximum of $150,000 Canadian, to their partner shelters in 2011. The London Humane Society took in 66 dogs between January and April 2011 and adopted out 69 dogs to loving homes. Research has shown that supplementing with omega-3s can improve mood, attention and alertness in young boys with learning disorders. Three of the most important EFAs for brain development, behaviour, and mood are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and gamma linolenic acid (GLA). DHA is particularly important as a brain “building block” in prenatal and early life, and for ongoing cellular repair. DHA comprises as much as 60% of the fatty acids in the brain and in the retina of the eye. Studies suggest that there is a critical period during retinal development when inadequate DHA will result in permanent visual abnormalities. While not as structurally significant as DHA, EPA has more of a functional role. EPA increases blood flow and positively influences hormones and the immune system, which support the developing brain. EPA is also crucial for moment-to-moment brain cell signalling. GLA supports normal nerve function, which is particularly important for learning and memory. LEARNING FACTO RS ADVANCED SCHOOL-AID™ Learning Factors Advanced School-Aid is a delicious way to help even the fussiest children (and adults) learn, and study better. It provides the ideal ratio of EFAs to enhance brain and visual function, increase cell and membrane fluidity, improve protein performance, and support cell signalling and regulatory processes. These important EFAs reduce inflammation, nourish brain cells, and support brain “plasticity” – the ability of brain cells to reorganize to enhance brain function or recover from stress or damage. Learning Factors Advanced School-Aid comes in two formats: a smooth, creamy liquid with a delicious Extreme Peach flavour and peach-flavoured softgels that can be chewed or swallowed whole. Both are formulated with naturally-sourced flavours and sweeteners, and neither has any fishy smell or aftertaste.
