Scheme:
Developmet – Single Project
Support of individual project development is open
to producers interested in the development of one
project. Only applications submitted by independent
European production companies with proven experience, which have at least 50% rights to the project

the market for at least 12 months. Applicants must
provide evidence that they have earlier completed ,
as a leading producer, project similar to categories eligible under the scheme. Applicants must also prove
that their project was distributed.
Eligible projects: • Feature films
(films or series of at least 50 minutes)
• Creative documentaries
(films or series of at least 25 minutes)
• Animations
(films or series of at least 24 minutes)
Scheme:
TV Broadcasting
Support is available for independent television
companies having in their offer European television
projects, generally not intended for theatrical distribution (exemptions from this rule - details available
25 - 26 November 2010
in the guidelines), in the following categories:
• Feature films of at least 50 minutes
• Creative documentaries of at least 25 minutes
• Animations of at least 24 minutes
Support of up to 12.5% of the production budget,
but not more than € 500,000 is available for feature
films and animations, and up to 20% of the budget,
but not more than € 300,000 available for creative
documentaries. At the time of submission project
must have guaranteed financing for 50% of the total
budget and the involvement of at least three broadcasters from different countries participating in the
MEDIA Programme. Applications must be submitted
before the commencement of shooting.
EUROPA CINEMAS - film theatre network
focusing on European film
20% of support to cinemas members of the Europa
Cinemas network is attributed to encourage exhibitors’ initiatives toward young audiences.
Notably, this support takes into consideration specific
programming in terms of European films and screenings geared toward young audiences and school pupils. Also considered are exhibitors’ activities, publications, mailings and promotion for the films and
screenings, as well as participation in joint activities
developed at the national or European level. This
support is attributed proportionally to the number
of screens benefiting from support. If more than 5
screens benefit from support, the Young Audience
support is limited at 5,000 euros per year and per
convention.
Every year, since 2005, a Young Audience Seminar
has been organized by Europa Cinemas during the
Il Cinema Ritrovato festival located at the Cineteca
di Bologna.

Regional Film Funds
Regional film funds is an initiative of local authorities aimed at the players of the film industry. Typically, the local authority reserve a certain amount in
the budget for funding film or films, then announce
open competition for the script, evaluate submitted
projects and grant money to the producers. An absolute requirement of participation in the competition,
and thus – to receive a grant – is to link the content
of the film (its story, in case of feature film or theme
– in case of a documentary) with the region. In this
way the authorities invest in the promotion of their
region, since the region will be shown in the film
and the film, in turn, will be screened at international
festivals. And additional advantage is that often a
prerequisite for receiving the grant is to spend some
of it in the region (eg. for the purchase of services),
which revives the local economy, and the production
itself, which must take place in the region, creates
additional jobs.

Virtual Vision S.A.
VIRTUAL VISION SA produces 3D stereoscopic animated film and tv serials aimed for the youngest
viewers and the whole family intended for worldwide distribution. The studio is equipped with television equipment and a system of MOCAP (motion
capture), which enables actors to simulate the movements of any person. Actor’s moves are then transmitted by a computer program to his digital alter-ego
or any other figure. This technology allows you to
create virtual actors in real time. VIRTUAL VISION
proceeded to its first production of the animated film
by purchasing the film rights to a book by Paul Shipton Bug Muldoon.
On 12 May 2010 VIRTUAL VISION has signed a longterm agreement with the Polish Film Institute (PISF).
Taking into account the strategic and long-term cooperation, Virtual Vision S.A. plans to bring the company’s listing onto the main market of the Stock Exchange and organize public issues of new shares and
the funds thus acquired together with PISF to allocate
into the production of a series of films, especially
animated films for family audience. Obtained funds
are to be spend not only on the projects produced
by the company, but also on films made by other
independent Polish producers and on international
co-production film projects.

KIDS FIRST! Conference
A subjective list of best-selling publications 2000 - 2010
Selection criteria:
• actual readers’ appreciation and recognition ( results obtained from library survey query and reading
test results)
• recognition of opinion leaders (prizes, awards, high ratings of literary criticism),
• possible usefulness in the selection of titles for the film adaptation (plot rapidity, vivid characters, dynamic
dialogs, stage potential)
Younger Children
1.
Liliana Bardijewska, Zielony wędrowiec, Ezop Publishing House
The history of little green Creature, who travels the world to find the green river, which, in contrast to
the gray river, whose banks are inhibited by gray creatures, show him his own, and so green reflection.
Wandering through various lands becomes an excuse to get to know the various relationships between
the hero and the world around it, discover and understand the multiple lines of tensions that arise
between an individual and collectivity: the inhabitants of the blue land, perceiving the Creature as the
apostate (different, alien), want to make it blue; inhabitants of the red land recognize its diversity as a
sign of royalty and surround it with royal glory etc. The theatrical adaptation has been made out of it
(work exhibited in several theaters: Lalka in Warsaw, Teatr Lalek in Bialystok, Banialuka in Bielsko-Biała).
2.
Grzegorz Kasdepke, Detektyw Pozytywka, Nasza Ksiegarnia Publishing House
Sparkling with humor, written with verve story about a detective, who lives in an old tenement house,
where his agency “Rosy Glasses” is also situated. Detective character fascinates children living nearby,
because he can resolve everything and anything, both everyday and unusual puzzles - in which, of
course, children have their share. Great moral observations; excellent characters; biting, short dialogues.
3.
Grzegorz Kasdepke, Kacperiada. Opowiadania dla łobuzów i nie tylko, Literatura
Publishing House
Daily life of father and son - the usual ups and downs, events, stories, closer and further characters
viewed from different perspectives, especially from the position of the father, who, to his astonishment,
often feels like a little boy. Very witty, very light, very modern, well-written, emerging from contemporary
observation of children and their relationship with the older generation.
4.
Anna Onichimowska, Dzień Czekolady, Świat Książki Publishing House
Written in the form of a fairy tale about Okruszek, who was banished from the castle (because of “too
much” wisdom) and lived in the Enchanted Forest. Axis storyline built around a mysterious and dramatic
process of the disappearance of the forest –Along with a timid Szczurek Okruszek embarks on a journey
to solve the puzzle and stop the upcoming tragedy. Many funny scenes, well written characters, dynamic
plot, elements autothematic.
5.
Anna Onichimowska, Dzień Czekolady, Świat Książki Publishing House
A story about friendship and the problems of childhood; combines fantasy with reality. Monika and David
flee to the magic world away from the problems that arise in everyday life (kitten Susan has some share in
this), David tries to fulfill Monika’s dream about time travel. Romantic, poetic story in pastel colors.
6.
Roman Pawlak, Miłek z czarnego lasu, Powergraph Publishing House
Miłek escapes from the evil past and goes to the Black Forest – wild part of the city park, which for small
48
25 - 26 November 2010
creatures is their own, big world. Miłek slowly settles down, gains friends, accepts his otherness, can
also accept the otherness of others. Combines humor with seriousness undertaking important problems
of human life.
7.
Zofia Stanecka, Basia i przedszkole [and other stories in the series], LektorKlett
Publishing House
The cycle of books about small Basia and her daily experiences: Basia goes to the kindergarten, she
must learn how to co-exist in a group, finds herself a new environment and meets new colleagues; in
the following parts of the series she goes to school, learn letters, take new responsibilities; her brother
is born , which puts her in a new situation, etc. A series of serene, realistic stories about a modern child,
her experiences and problems she has to stand up to, but also her desires, needs and dreams. Cheerful,
lively, humorous stories with teaching and educational qualities. Strong, positive image of the family.
8.
Małgorzata Strękowska-Zaremba, Abecedelki i duch Bursztynowego Domu,
Pracownia Pedagogiczna i Wydawnicza Publishing House
The action of the tale is set in a small town, the characters - two boys and a girl, friends from the kindergarten - start school, where they experience many adventures that intertwines with the history of the
spirit dwelling in the Amber House.
9.
Agnieszka Tyszka, Róże w garażu, Literatura Publishing House
A warm, family story that connects adventure and humor. Main heroes - two mothers on friendly terms
and their six children at different ages: from the two year old to teenagers - spend a holiday in the seemingly boring plot. Boredom turns into a fascinating adventure, when all of them must solve the mystery
of strange events, and each has a different idea of solving the mystery. Excellent moral observations,
fascinating characters, increasing in intensity atmosphere of mystery.
10. Wojciech Widłak, Pan Kuleczka, Media Rodzina Publishing House
Miniature stories of the title hero, and three of his wards (Katastrofa, the duck; Pypeć, the dog; and
Bzyk-Bzyk, the fly). He invents games for them all and takes care that nobody is bored. The whole story
comprises two volumes. The house is warm and friendly here, rules to be observed are clear to everybody and a gentle ‘smile’ gives those stories a specific character.
Older children
1.
Lilianna Bardijewska, Dom ośmiu tajemnic, Nasza Księgarnia Publishing House
The story about roots and identity. A young boy with and his parents move to an old tenement house.
Initially his feelings towards his new home are very negative, his colleagues live in modern “apartment
buildings”, he - in an old house. Slowly he begins to discover its secrets, but the real explosion of fascination comes with a dramatic event: the house appears to be a monument and the boy and his parents
have to move out. Anecdote of an adventurous character becomes a parable about childhood home,
which needs to be abandoned, but which stays with us for the rest of our lives.
2.
Paweł Beręsewicz, Co tam u Ciumków?, Skrzat Publishing House
This and subsequent volumes of the cycle show in a funny way ordinary life of a loving family - warm, cheerful,
cordial. Humor comes primarily from the relationships between generations. The book not only allows you to
love Ciumki, but also your own home, see warmth in it and allow one to understand that humor comes from
maturity and distance a man keeps towards everything that happens to him and to every person he meets
in his life. The latest volume - Warsaw. Walking with Ciumki – is about several family trips through the city.
49
KIDS FIRST! Conference
3.
Paul Beręsewicz, Jak zakochałem Kaśkę Kwiatek, Skrzat Publishing House
Full of humor, tactful and witty story about the first feeling of the young boy to a school friend. As it
often happens in this age all his ideas to “fall in love with Katherine,” i.e. to make her feel the same way,
are ridiculous and doomed to failure. Beręsewicz will make every loser stand on his feet. And because
everybody is a bit of a loser everyone will find in the story something for oneself. Adults as well.
4.
Barbara Gawryluk, Zuzanka z pistacjowego domu, Literatura Publishing House
The story of a contemporary girl and her family – mother works or goes on dates, father has a second
wife and a second child; Zuzanka, girl plunged into the world of desires and dreams, is taken care of by
Agnieszka. Despite of numerous difficult problems accumulated in the story it is still warm and cheerful.
The story has many humorous scenes and witty dialogues.
5.
Ewa Grętkiewicz, Sczekająca szczęka Saszy, Nasza Księgarnia Publishing House
A new student joins the class - Belarusian with Polish roots. Carol, his school friends tells about his difficult experiences in school. The story of tolerance and acceptance, written wisely, vividly, with verve and
great, subtle humor.
6.
Jacek Inglot, Eri I smok, Skrzat Publishing House
Eri, a red-haired girl with the extraordinary gift, must take the dragon egg to Lyrie, where Ewanna the fairy
lives. She is accompanied by a group of colorful characters (a gnome, a poet - a former robber and gnome).
They are chased buy the servants of evil: who will be at the birth of the dragon and give it a name, will receive an invincible weapon that allows the owner to control of the world. Contemporary variant of fantasy,
the story is brilliant and very fresh in comparison to duplicated ideas for children movies.
7.
Barbara Kosmowska, Buba, Media Rodzina Publishing House
A playful and reflective portrait of the modern family. The main character, a modern young girl, searches
for her identity and tries to find contact with adults occupied with their own problems.
8.
Roman Pawlak, Czapka Holmesa, Akapit Press Publishing House
Friends from the neighborhood - Marcin, Krzyś and Agnieszka - undertook to solve the puzzle of the
mysterious beast. The crime thriller intertwines with difficult problems of growing up: Marcin – Holmes
gets in trouble with Karczycha gang, which terrorizes children from the neighborhood, he also has
problems at home and at school, problems with his peers also pile up. Marcin needs to face all of them.
An interesting psychological study and a reliable picture of the world of contemporary younger teens,
dynamic story - all this makes the book compelling reading Pawlak.
9.
Krzysztof Petek, series: Porachunki z przygodą, Siedmioróg Publishing House
Highly-read author highly, favorite among younger teens. Porachunki z przygodą is the longest series of
his books (the other series: Gra, Operacja HYDRA). Very dynamic plots, schemes based on crome and
thriller stories. The mood of the vast, colorful adventure, the young heroes in the roles of detectives and
rangers, well-described contemporary background, colorful characters, dynamic dialogues.
10. Dorota Terakowska, Babci Brygidy szalona podróż po Krakowie.
Dzień i noc czarownicy, Wydawnictwo Literacki Publishing House
The book released in such a way that you can read it from two sides: each side starts with its own story;
these are the first and the last children’s story written by Terakowska. Both are fairy-tales. The first one
is about the frantic journey through Krakow. The second one is a deep, moving reflection on order of
good and evil, life and death. The first one is ‘funny, delusive and scary’ the second one touches and
moves you deeply.

Youth
1.
Grażyna Bąkiewicz, O Melba!, Prószyński i S-ka Publishing House
Very contemporary novel about a contemporary teenage girl and a very contemporary family. An intriguing, full of reflection story, it combines a serious tone with humor. The trilogy continues in volumes: the
state of feverishness, and I will be in Clare. All volumes treat about serious problems encountered by
modern teenagers: misunderstandings in the family, “stillness” of life in a small town, death, drugs...
2.
Jacek Dukaj, Wroniec, Wydawnictwo Literackie Publishing House
Close in the atmosphere to Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland fantasy tale of martial law, addressed to readers
of all ages - both those for which the martial law was the historical experience (it is fun to them to be
able to recognize events, characters and hints), and for those without any memory of martial law (for
them Wroniec is a story about little Adam, whose family is kidnapped by Wroniec and who needs to
defeat the enemy to regain his family).
3.
Marta Fox, Karolina XL, Akapit Press Publishing House
History of a contemporary teenage girl with inferiority complex called “Karolina XL” because of her
obesity. Charmed by a man she meets by chance she gives in to him to prove her own attractiveness.
She is backed by her mother. Subtle psychological study, written against any simplifications, without
sentimentality, essentially an analysis of drama of a girl in a world where Barbie doll is the measure
of attractiveness. There are also other problems - domestic violence in the family of one of the heroes,
environmental tensions. Follow-up: Karolina HL zakochana.
4.
Marta Fox, Niebo z widokiem na niebo, Siedmioróg Publishing House
A novel about teenagers who find each other “on the web”, fall in love and conduct conversations
sending one another poems. Excellent collage, with excellent observations of everyday life (accurately
outlined humorous scenes), unusual psychological portraits of characters, skillfully deepened reflections
on the modern world and opportunities of salvation for the lost human psyche.
5.
Grzegorz Gortat, Do pierwszej krwi, Ossolineum Publishing House
A novel of contemporary life “hooligans”, Warsaw high school students; undertakes the problem of
“otherness”, intolerance, and above all violence against anyone who is “different” - the enemy can be
anyone who has a different origin or race, as well as those who are the fan of other sports team. Very
modern, written with a great sense of moral dilemmas and attitudes of today’s teenagers.
6.
Grzegorz Gortat, Szczury i wilki, Nasza Księgarnia Publishing House
Intriguing novel, raises questions about the contemporary face of anti-Semitism. Its protagonist, fifteenyear-old Henry, is associated with neo-nazi movement, participates in the barbaric murder of a man who
did not have “pure blood”, and after a while defends the violated girl. Contemporary scenes intertwine
with the images from the extermination camp in Auschwitz – the inhuman conditions of life and death
which contrast with pure, noble heroism of camp’s everyday life. Without a doubt the most important
initiation novel of the past decade.
7.
Barbara Kosmowska, Pozłacana rybka, Stentor Publishing Hous
Barbara Kosmowska, champion of psychological portraits, tells of a difficult moment in the life of a teenage heroine: a girl has to come to terms with her parents’ divorce and the presence of a new woman
in her father’s life. As if this wasn’t enough she goes through a tough love affair and needs to handle
the drama of her brother’s illness. Disease, death, unsteadiness of emotions, divorce of the parents,
unknown to previous generations family problems so characteristic to the social landscape of our time
51
KIDS FIRST! Conference
force the girl to revise her attitudes, ask existential and humane questions. In the background there is a
problem of drugs and anorexia. The narration is complemented by subjective ‘letters to myself’ written
by the girl.
