AMVER AWARDS 2 0 1 1 OCTOBER 13 AMVER AWARDS 2011 Once more the International Propeller Club of the United States, International Port of Piraeus in cooperation with the United States Embassy to the Hellenic Republic and the United States Coast Guard organized the AMVER Awards Ceremony. The ceremony took place at the Athenaeum Intercontinental Hotel on October 13th , 2011, among 880 members of the maritime community. One Hundred and thirty six (136) Greek controlled shipping companies received 944 awards on behalf of 944 vessels participating in the AMVER System. The President of the Propeller Club, Mr. Antonios Stamos Faraklas, the Deputy Chief of Mission, Mrs. Virginia Lynn Bennett of the United States Embassy of America to the Hellenic Republic, the representative of United States Coast Guard, Rear Admiral James Watson, director of prevention policy for marine safety, security and stewardship in Washington, welcomed attending guests. Speech by the President of the Propeller Club, Mr. Antonios Stamos Faraklas: Dear Guests and fellowmembers, It is a great pleasure to welcome you to 2011 AMVER Awards , organized jointly by the Propeller Club , U.S Embassy to Greece and the U.S Coast Guard. Having recently been elected President of the Propeller Club International Port of Piraeus, I want to emphasize that shipping owes a lot to USA and USCG for their efforts to save lives at sea irrespective of seafarers nationality, religion, or beliefs. This year Greek controlled ships earn the highest number of awards, 136 companies - 944 ships; a very impressive number for Greek shipping and we hope this will improve and attract greater participation in AMVER, since by doing so it will help shipping itself, the crew and the environment . Once more, I want to emphasize the need to work together owners and seafarers to achieve the common goal of “safety at sea”. During these times of world crisis, which has not left shipping untouched, by joining the Amver Program you assist our common target, which is no other but safety for the world seafarer. This year, the Board of Governors of Propeller Club unanimously decided to honnour Past President Nicky Pappadakis with the Special Achievemnet award, in recognition of his services to Greek and International shipping. Congratulations! Finally I want to thank our sponsors; without them the tonight event could not have happened and thank you all for your contribution to the success of this event. Congratulations to the awarded companies. Enjoy the evening! Speech by Rear Admiral James Watson, United States Coast Guard: “It’s my pleasure to join you tonight celebrating excellence in shipping and safety at sea. The Greeks have a long and proud maritime history and nowhere is that better demonstrated than the Amver awards tonight. Take pride in knowing your ships and crews contributed to saving 265 lives last year; that’s approximately one life every 33 hours. In fact, Greek ships directly saved 11 lives. Tonight we recognize 943 vessels from 138 companies that have dedicated themselves to ensuring no call for help goes unanswered. It’s a remarkable statement to the world and demonstrates Greece’s commitment to those who go to sea. Take pride in your accomplishments, such as those by the M/V CYCLADES, whose crew observed a flooded motor boat with four people onboard in the Sulu Sea and quickly rescued the sailors, or the M/V SAMJOHN AMITY who assisted in the rescue of several sailors after their boat sank near the Dominican Republic. Your efforts are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard and I am honored to present your 2010 Amver Awards.” Secretary General, Mr. Theodoros Kontes, Ceremony coordinator, invited immediate past President of the Propeller Club and President of Intercargo, Mr. Nicky Pappadakis, who was presented by the President the Propeller Club Special Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding services to the Greek and International Shipping. This year RINA celebrates 150 years of history during which it has progressively diversified its activities, transferring its skills acquired and consolidated in the marine sector to other sectors, covering quality, environmental and product management system certification, social accountability certification and advanced services for industry. RINA Hellas Ltd, the Society established in Piraeus by RINA Group, offers classification services, training and ISO certification, and cooperates with the most reputable Shipping companies in Greece. The Plan Approval Centre in Piraeus established in 2008 is keeping its position as a point of technical reference for the local market supporting ship owners, designers, technical consultants and shipyards. RINA’s worldwide experience in yacht building and classification is offered to the local market through the newly established Piraeus Yachting Team. Classification and statutory certification on behalf of all major flag Administrations (including Greece, UK (MCA), etc) is offered to yacht owners, brokers and managers for yachts of all sizes (from mega charter yachts to small pleasure ones). RINA’s activities in Greece have also recently been reinforced by the opening of a Piraeus training centre, and by strengthening collaboration with first-class local firms to better serve the needs of our Greek clients. www.rina.org RINA is one of the oldest classification societies and certification companies in the world. Established in Genoa in 1861 to serve the marine industry, today it spans the globe as a multinational and multi-faceted company, sharing its knowledge and experience through a wide range of services which help industries and the community to improve their businesses and quality of life. RINA’s services cover the environment, energy, transportation, logistics, safety, quality and social responsibility. RINA granted US Coast Guard US flag approval GENOA-based classification society RINA has been authorised by the U.S. Coast Guard to conduct plan review and approval and initial and subsequent surveys for U.S.-flagged cargo and passenger vessels. Under the agreement signed yesterday, RINA has received delegation for Load Line, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, and Tonnage survey and certification services. The MOA delegating authority and establishing guidelines for co-operation between the USCG and RINA was signed at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington yesterday, by Rear Admiral Paul F. Zukunft (Assistant Commandant for Marine Safety, Security and Stewardship) USCG and Ugo Salerno, CEO, RINA. Ugo Salerno, CEO, RINA, says, “We appreciate the trust the USCG is putting in RINA, and we salute the good relations and mutual respect we have developed over twenty years. We have focused relentlessly on quality and that has paid off as we have topped the quality table for classification societies as measured by Port State Control performance.” Rear Admiral Paul F. Zukunft, USCG, says, “The signing of this agreement is indicative of the trust and value the U.S. Coast Guard places in our partnerships that promote the safe and secure movement of shipping, people, and cargo across the vast maritime domain.” RINA was the first international classification society to sign a co-operation agreement with the USCG for foreign-flag passenger ships using US ports, and since then has worked hard with the Coast Guard to ensure that US passengers sail on safe ships. Today this new agreement recognizes the success of that agreement and makes RINA’s services available to the wider US shipping industry. Massimo Volta, General Manager, America, RINA, says, “Operators of US tonnage will now be able to benefit from the high levels of service on which RINA prides itself. We bring the full range of international classification services to the US market, we also bring a lot of expertise and experience, especially with specialized vessels. And we bring something extra, we bring a special attention to personal service.”
