J.A. Jance
Clawback
J.A. Jance is the New York Times (NYT)
Bestselling author of more than fifty books.
Born in South Dakota and raised in Bisbee,
Arizona, she and her husband maintain
homes in Washington and Arizona. In
Clawback, when Bob and Edie Larson lose
their life savings to a Ponzi scheme, Bob heads off for an eyeto-eye confrontation with his investment advisor, only to find
both the man and his wife brutally murdered. With Bob cast in
the role of prime suspect, it’s up to his daughter, Ali Reynolds,
and her husband to put things right.
Jay Asher
Thirteen Reasons Why
Jay Asher’s debut Thirteen Reasons Why
spent over two years on the NYT bestseller
list and is being developed into a Netflix
series Executive Produced by Selena
Gomez. His second book, The Future of Us
(co-written with Carolyn Mackler), is being
developed into a movie by Warner Bros. Thirteen Reasons Why
won multiple awards: Best Books for Young Adults; Kirkus
Reviews Editor’s Choice; State Awards – Winner: Florida,
Kansas, Kentucky; and more. In Thirteen Reasons Why, Clay
Jensen returns home from school to find a box with his name
on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes
recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who
committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains
there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. If he
listens, he’ll find out how he made the list. V.E. Schwab
A Gathering of Shadows
V. E. Schwab is the author of middle grade
and young adult novels including the
acclaimed The Near Witch. In A Gathering
of Shadows, Schwab returns with a trip to
the thrilling alternate world she has created
where multiple versions of London exist.
Apart from Grey London and White London, there’s Red
London, where life and magic are revered, and Kell was raised
alongside Rhy Maresh, heir to an empire. There was Black
London, a fearful place that no one speaks of. Four months
have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession.
Kell is visited by dreams of magical events, waking to think of
Lila, who disappeared from the docks. As Red London prepares
for the Element Games, an international competition of magic,
a pirate ship draws closer. In the midst of the Games, Black
London rises, and another London must fall.
Garth Stein
A Sudden Light
Garth Stein is the author of three previous
novels, including The Art of Racing in
the Rain, which spent more than three
years on the NYT bestseller list. It has
inspired a Young Reader edition as well as
a children’s picture book adaptation and is
in development with Universal Studios for
a motion picture. He lives in Seattle with his wife, three sons,
and their dog, Comet. In A Sudden Light, 14-year-old Trevor
Riddell moves with his family to Riddell House, the legendary
family mansion, constructed of giant trees and set on a huge
estate overlooking Puget Sound. His parents have begun a trial
separation, and his father has brought him to Riddell House
with a plan: to join forces with his sister, dispatch Grandpa
Samuel to a nursing home, sell the house and property, divide
up the profits, and live happily ever after. But Trevor discovers a
spirit lingering in Riddell House whose agenda is at odds with
the family plan.
Michael Hingson
Thunder Dog
Michael Hingson was born blind to sighted
parents in Chicago, who raised their son
with a can-do attitude. Treated like his
other siblings, he rode a bike and learned to
read and write – Braille that is! His family
moved to Palmdale, CA when he was five.
It was here he had his first adventure with
Guide Dogs for the Blind and received his first guide dog.
He earned a BA and MA in Physics from the University of
California, Irvine. Thunder Dog relates his experience of living
through the World Trade Center attacks with the help of his
guide dog, Roselle.
Lauren Castillo
Twenty Yawns
Lauren Castillo is the illustrator of many
books, including The Reader by Amy
Hest. She has written and illustrated
several books, including Caldecott
Honor book Nana in the City. She lives
in California. Twenty Yawns, featuring lyrical text from Pulitzer
Prize winner Jane Smiley and beautiful illustrations from
Castillo, is a bedtime tale evoking the splashy fun of the beach
and the quietude of a moonlit night.

first book in a four-book series. Rip and
Red are best friends whose fifth-grade year
is nothing like they expected. They have a
crazy new teacher and basketball coach, Mr.
Acevedo, who doesn’t believe in tests or homework and who likes
off-the-wall projects. Rip is totally knocked out of his comfort
zone. And for Red, who has autism and really needs things to
be a certain way, the changes are even more of a struggle. But
this great duo know how to help each other out, both in the
classroom and on the court!
Adam Rex
Smek for President!
Adam Rex wrote and/or illustrated the NYT
bestselling Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich,
Chu’s Day, and a number of titles about
which the New York Times has been strangely
coy. His first novel, The True Meaning of
Smekday, a funny and heartwarming tale
about the end of the world, was adapted into
the DreamWorks film Home. Smek for President is the beautifully
illustrated sequel to The True Meaning of Smekday.

Bother’s & Sinisters:
Outback
Mark Wayne Adams’ ability to produce
quality illustrations at a fast pace and
dedication to mentor others has made MWA,
Inc. successful and unique. He continues to
create new products annually. Outback, book

Outback? Mariko Tamaki
Saving Montgomery Sole
Mariko Tamaki is a Canadian writer
now living in Oakland, California whose
numerous works include the Caldecott
Medal winning graphic novel This One
Summer with Jillian Tamaki. Montgomery
Sole is a square peg in a small town, forced
to go to a school full of jocks and girls who
don’t even know what irony is. It would
all be impossible if it weren’t for her best friends, the members
of her Mystery Club dedicated to exploring paranormal and
supernatural phenomena. Will the possibly powerful amulet
Monty bought online help her and her friends fight back against
the ignorant jerks in her town? Katie McGarry
Walk The Edge
Katie McGarry, author of four novels and
one novella, is a lover of music and happy
endings. She’s also a secret UK basketball fan.
In Walk the Edge, 17-year-old Breanna’s role
in her family is to be the smart, responsible
one, and heaven forbid she put a toe out of
line. One night of un-Breanna-like behavior
puts her into a cyber-bully’s line of fire,
bringing Thomas “Razor” Turner into her life. He lives for his
motorcycle club; good girls like Breanna don’t belong. When he
learns she’s being blackmailed, he knows it’s time to step outside
the rules. Soon, they’re walking the edge of discovering who they
really are. Children’s Day | April 22, 2016

named to numerous best-of lists. She’s also
the author of Spy Guy the Not-So-Secret Agent
and the Finley Flowers series. In Haggis and
Tank Unleashed: All Paws on Deck, the two

clever wordplay, this series is aimed at newly independent readers,
featuring easy-to-read text, fast-paced plots, and tons of illustrations
to boost reading confidence. Brooks Benjamin
My Seventh-Grade Life in Tights
In sixth grade, Brooks Benjamin formed a New
Kids on the Block tribute dance crew. Now he’s
got a new crew: his wife and their dog. They
live in Tennessee, where he teaches reading
and writing. In his debut novel, My Seventh
Grade Life in Tights, Dillon’s dance crew keeps
saying that dance studios are for sell-outs.

important: sticking to his crew’s rules or freestyling his way into solo
greatness. 11 a.m.

David Arnold
Mosquitoland
David Arnold lives in Lexington,
Kentucky, with his wife and son. He
is the critically-acclaimed author of
Mosquitoland. After the sudden collapse
of her family, Mim Malone is dragged
from her home in Ohio to Mississippi
to live with her dad and new stepmom.
Before the dust settles, she learns her
mother is sick. So she ditches her new life and hops aboard
a Greyhound bus to her real home and her real mother,
meeting a quirky cast of travelers along the way. When her
journey takes a few unexpected turns, Mim must confront
her own demons, redefining her notions of love, loyalty, and
what it means to be sane. David Bell
Somebody I Used to Know
David Bell is a bestselling and awardwinning author. He’s an associate professor
of English at Western Kentucky University.
In Somebody I Used to Know, when Nick
Hansen sees the woman at the grocery
store, his heart stops. She’s the spitting
image of his college girlfriend who died
years ago. Nick tries to speak to her, but
she rushes off. The next morning the police arrive at Nick’s
house and show him a photo of the woman - she’s been found
dead, with Nick’s name and address on a piece of paper in her
pocket. C.J. Redwine
The Shadow Queen
C.J. Redwine is the author of the postapocalyptic fantasy Defiance trilogy. She
lives in Nashville with her husband and
children. The Shadow Queen is a dark
fantasy inspired by Snow White. Lorelai,
princess and fugitive, has one mission:
kill the queen who took the Ravenspire
throne and her father’s life. She needs
to use the weapon she and Queen Irina have in common:
magic. Prince Kol must save his kingdom; but he needs
magic too, so he makes a deal with the Queen, promising to
hunt Lorelai down. Fighting to stay one step ahead of Kol,
Lorelai does everything she can to ruin the wicked queen.

Crystal Wilkinson
The Birds of Opulence
Crystal Wilkinson is the author
of Water Street and Blackberries,
Blackberries, winner of the Chaffin
Award. She serves as Appalachian
Writer-in-Residence at Berea College
and teaches in the Spalding low
residency MFA in Creative Writing
Program. The Birds of Opulence is a
lyrical exploration of love and loss, centering on several
generations of women in a southern black township as they
live with and sometimes surrender to madness. The town of
Opulence is a world of magic, conjuring, signs, and spells,
but also of harsh realities that only love—and love that’s
handed down—can conquer. J.T. Ellison
No One Knows
With the same suspense as The Girl
on the Train, Nashville-based NYT
bestselling author J.T. Ellison’s No One
Knows is a thriller questioning if the
narrator’s husband really has returned
from the dead—or if she’s merely
losing her mind. Aubrey Hamilton has
been mourning her missing husband for five years, despite
being the prime suspect in his murder. When he is officially
declared dead, there are still more questions than answers.
No One Knows is an evocative mystery that explores the
complex darkness within all of us. Courtney C. Stevens
The Lies About Truth
Courtney C. Stevens grew up in
Kentucky and lives in Nashville,
Tennessee. She is an adjunct professor
and a former youth minister. In The
Lies About Truth, a year after surviving
a car accident that killed her friend
Trent, Sadie Kingston lives in the
aftermath. The only person who
understands her is Trent’s brother, Max. As Sadie begins to
fall for him, she’s unsure if she’s healed enough. But Max
looks at her scars and doesn’t shy away. And he knows about
the list she writes in the sand every night, things she must
accomplish to move on.
Kentucky Literary Award Finalists
First awarded in 2003, and presented annually by the Southern Kentucky Book Fest
Partnership, the Kentucky Literary Award is a celebration of Kentucky literature. Eligible
books include those written by Kentuckians or books with a substantial Kentucky theme.
Fiction and non-fiction works are considered in alternating years. The 2016 award goes
to a work of fiction published in 2014 or 2015, and the award winner is announced at the
Meet the Authors Reception to be held Friday, April 22. The 2016 Kentucky Literary Award is
made possible through the generosity of the Friends of WKU Libraries.
Paulette Livers
Cementville
Paulette Livers grew up in Kentucky and
now lives in Chicago. She has received
numerous awards and writing fellowships.
In Cementville, a Kentucky town is turned
inside out by the deaths of seven National
Guardsmen in a single Vietcong attack in
1969. The return of the bodies sets off something inside the town
itself, pushing the families of Cementville into alienation and
grief. Through one strange summer, Maureen, the adolescent
sister of a recently returned GI, attempts to document the
changes happening to her town. With the Civil Rights Act only
a few years old, a restless citizenry divided over the war, and
the Women’s Movement beginning to send tremors through
assumptions about family life, Cementville provides a microcosm
of a society shedding the old order.
Paul Griner
Hurry Please I Want To Know
Paul Griner, author of numerous published
collections, novels, and essays, teaches
Creative Writing at the University of
Louisville. Hurry Please I Want to Know is a
collection of stories which leave the reader
leaning forward in urgent curiosity as he spins
between quotidian worlds infused with the
foreign, and foreign worlds that feel familiar. A man brings his
mother back from the dead, only to find her most irritating quirk
magnified; a soldier crosses dangerous terrain to milk a cow in an
enemy village; a woman, haunted by her multiple miscarriages,
follows a stranger at the urgent care clinic who has just suffered
her first. Griner mixes together violent, shocking endings
and ones that fade away quietly. The result is a meditation on
capturing the intangible, and the human fascination with worlds
that are not our own.
Alex Taylor
The Marble Orchard
Originally from Rosine, Kentucky, Alex Taylor
teaches at Morehead State University. He is
the author of the story collection The Name of
the Nearest River and The Marble Orchard, an
engrossing, tragic literary thriller that tells the
story of Beam Sheetmire, the black sheep of a
large and entrenched Kentucky clan. After an accidental killing,
Beam is forced to flee through a countryside where he meets a
motley range of madmen and murderers as he travels headlong
to an inevitable reckoning with fate.

Family of Spies: Sunrise - A New Dawn
Everything is changing. Luke and Brooke never thought they would have
to do what they are suddenly finding themselves forced to. They never
imagined the new world that is now considered their home even existed.
But they always believed that they would have each other; that they would
always be twins. In this new reality, could that one fact, that fact that
they thought could never be taken away, be snatched from them? In this
dimension, you cannot count on the person that is always there for you. In
this dimension, nothing is forever.

brutal decisions yield secrets that

has designed the first official poster, available to

Gary is the artist and writer behind The Infinite
Baseball Card Set blog. An award winning graphic
artist and illustrator, chances are you have visited
or bought something he designed: Bicycle Playing
Cards, the music department of Barnes & Noble, the
Folgers Coffee can, and the graphics for Oriole Park
at Camden Yards, still regarded as the best designed
ballpark in the Majors. He was the 2015 recipient of
the Tony Salin Award for the preservation of baseball
history and his book The League of Outsider Baseball
was called “the most beautiful baseball book of the
summer” by ESPN. Gary and his wife live happily in
Northern Kentucky, unless they discuss the merits of
the designated hitter rule.
