She needs to use the weapon she and Queen Irina have in common: magic. Prince Kol must save his kingdom; but he needs magic too, so he makes a deal with the Queen, promising to hunt Lorelai down. Fighting to stay one step ahead of Kol, Lorelai does everything she can to ruin the wicked queen. 8 Crystal Wilkinson The Birds of Opulence Crystal Wilkinson is the author of Water Street and Blackberries, Blackberries, winner of the Chaffin Award. She serves as Appalachian Writer-in-Residence at Berea College and teaches in the Spalding low residency MFA in Creative Writing Program. The Birds of Opulence is a lyrical exploration of love and loss, centering on several generations of women in a southern black township as they live with and sometimes surrender to madness. The town of Opulence is a world of magic, conjuring, signs, and spells, but also of harsh realities that only love—and love that’s handed down—can conquer. J.T. Ellison No One Knows With the same suspense as The Girl on the Train, Nashville-based NYT bestselling author J.T. Ellison’s No One Knows is a thriller questioning if the narrator’s husband really has returned from the dead—or if she’s merely losing her mind. Aubrey Hamilton has been mourning her missing husband for five years, despite being the prime suspect in his murder. When he is officially declared dead, there are still more questions than answers. No One Knows is an evocative mystery that explores the complex darkness within all of us. Courtney C. Stevens The Lies About Truth Courtney C. Stevens grew up in Kentucky and lives in Nashville, Tennessee. She is an adjunct professor and a former youth minister. In The Lies About Truth, a year after surviving a car accident that killed her friend Trent, Sadie Kingston lives in the aftermath. The only person who understands her is Trent’s brother, Max. Kentucky Literary Award Finalists First awarded in 2003, and presented annually by the Southern Kentucky Book Fest Partnership, the Kentucky Literary Award is a celebration of Kentucky literature. Eligible books include those written by Kentuckians or books with a substantial Kentucky theme. Fiction and non-fiction works are considered in alternating years. The 2016 award goes to a work of fiction published in 2014 or 2015, and the award winner is announced at the Meet the Authors Reception to be held Friday, April 22. The 2016 Kentucky Literary Award is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of WKU Libraries. Paulette Livers Cementville Paulette Livers grew up in Kentucky and now lives in Chicago. She has received numerous awards and writing fellowships. In Cementville, a Kentucky town is turned inside out by the deaths of seven National Guardsmen in a single Vietcong attack in 1969. The return of the bodies sets off something inside the town itself, pushing the families of Cementville into alienation and grief. Through one strange summer, Maureen, the adolescent sister of a recently returned GI, attempts to document the changes happening to her town. With the Civil Rights Act only a few years old, a restless citizenry divided over the war, and the Women’s Movement beginning to send tremors through assumptions about family life, Cementville provides a microcosm of a society shedding the old order. Paul Griner Hurry Please I Want To Know Paul Griner, author of numerous published collections, novels, and essays, teaches Creative Writing at the University of Louisville. Hurry Please I Want to Know is a collection of stories which leave the reader leaning forward in urgent curiosity as he spins between quotidian worlds infused with the foreign, and foreign worlds that feel familiar. A man brings his mother back from the dead, only to find her most irritating quirk magnified; a soldier crosses dangerous terrain to milk a cow in an enemy village; a woman, haunted by her multiple miscarriages, follows a stranger at the urgent care clinic who has just suffered her first. Griner mixes together violent, shocking endings and ones that fade away quietly. The result is a meditation on capturing the intangible, and the human fascination with worlds that are not our own. Alex Taylor The Marble Orchard Originally from Rosine, Kentucky, Alex Taylor teaches at Morehead State University. He is the author of the story collection The Name of the Nearest River and The Marble Orchard, an engrossing, tragic literary thriller that tells the story of Beam Sheetmire, the black sheep of a large and entrenched Kentucky clan. After an accidental killing, Beam is forced to flee through a countryside where he meets a motley range of madmen and murderers as he travels headlong to an inevitable reckoning with fate.
