Welcome
Welcome to our Sports Awards Ceremony – our annual celebration of the culture of sporting success and participation we have
at Denbigh.
As a School we encourage every student to take part with enthusiasm and commitment in the huge range of sporting
activities on offer at Denbigh, as sporting participation offers such benefits in terms of their health, fitness and
self - confidence. Our extensive programme of lunch time and after school clubs, inter-house competitions and school teams
offers students every opportunity to take part in extra-curricular sport to supplement their PE lessons.
It is this culture of sporting participation that I believe underpins our outstanding record of sporting success across Milton
Keynes and beyond. We were delighted to be awarded Sport MK’s Secondary School Sports Achiever of the Year Award for
2014 at a ceremony hosted at the Shenley Leisure Centre. This award is given to schools who have shown commitment to sport
in Milton Keynes, as well as producing both outstanding individual and team results throughout the year.
This year 49 Denbigh students received national or regional recognition in their chosen sporting fields. Our school sports
teams have also been very successful, remaining undefeated in nearly 60% of their inter-school matches. We have teams ranked
first in Milton Keynes in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Netball, Rounders and Tennis.
Highlights of our sporting achievements this year have been our U16 Boys Badminton Team winning through to the
National Schools Badminton Championships. Congratulations to Sean Chal, James Cheshire, Max Goldman and
Callum Hemming who performed so well at the finals which were held at Centre Parcs in Nottingham. The team were the
eventual runners-up, losing by only one game which was itself decided on the very last point. They could not have come
closer to being crowned national champions. Another notable success has been our U14 Boys Basketball Team who won the
Buckinghamshire Schools County Cup and qualified for the regional rounds of the National Schools Basketball Competition.
At today’s ceremony we will celebrate those students who have shown the highest levels of talent and commitment when
representing our School by awarding them their ‘Colours’. This brochure records the achievements of these students as well as
those that have achieved regional or national recognition. Also recorded in the Brochure are the names of all the students who
have regularly been members of our sports teams and have brought so much success to themselves and the School as a whole.
We are aware that our students achieve in sports not offered by the School and with local clubs in general and we do all
we can to support them.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff in our PE Faculty and from across the School who match the
commitment of our students and always go the extra mile to encourage, coach and motivate our students.
