THOSE WERE
PART XI
The Glory Days
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I
cannot tell you how many
people have approached
me since I began writing
for Brevard Live (in person,
email or phone), from
Orlando, Tampa, and even
other states. So many times
the comment has been made
to me that they have never
been lucky enough to have
all the really great musicians
in their town like Dave
Fiester (who was obviously
very well known and liked
in Orlando), as well as so
very many others who call
Brevard County home.
Some are young, and others
have played professionally
since the beginning of the
60’s when they were kids
14, 15 and 16 years old.
And so many of these same
musicians are still going
strong today, just that much
better and professional from
the years of experience. And
it has made me stop to really
think, and I have been hit
with the realization of just
how much talent is and has
always existed in our own
Brevard County. In a way
I suppose it has been taken
for granted because it has
always been here as far back
as most of us can remember.
I never thought about things
being any other way in places
like Orlando. To be perfectly
honest, the thought has
occurred to me that a town
that size must really have an
abundance of musical talent
and great bands. But not on
the level we enjoy as a way
of life here according to
recent events and feedback I
by Judy Tatum Lane
have received, conversations
that have taken place with
so many about our local
musical talent and the music
scene, from those who
consider themselves friends,
fans, fellow musicians, even
including some who have
taken time out while on
tour to call up and just talk
about the honor they had to
play with some of Brevard’s
finest, and what a privilege
it was. I now find myself
looking at the musicians
of Brevard County in a
somewhat different way. So
many I simply thought of as
friends who happened to play
music, was very good at it,
and as a huge music lover,
it was always my priority to
take every chance possible to
catch them at a gig to listen
“Transcontinental Mercy Flight”, Robbin Thompson (singer), Joe Billington (guitar),
Jim Nash (guitar), Hank Saunders (drums), John Lane (bass).

and watch as they played,
and see a friend at the same
time. I realize I have always
admired and respected their
talent, but I now have an
even stronger respect for
these people, and feel blessed
that they are my friends and
so many possess this very
exceptional talent which
gives joy, entertainment,
and fulfillment to so many
of us. And best of all, they
are not only good musicians,
but good people. And all of
them right here in our little
community.
I cannot remember when
there wasn’t the standing
joke “throw a rock anywhere
in Brevard County and
you’ll hit a musician”. Even
the parents picked up the
phrase as they were telling
their children how they were
wasting their time playing in
bands when they should be
studying to go to college so
that they could have the good
jobs, new cars and houses,
and be something when they
grew up. But these were kids
who on the average could
think of nothing beyond
playing music. It was over
35 years ago I would hear
people laughing and making
that comment all the time. As
a matter of fact, you can hear
it being said today (usually
jokingly by a musician who’s
been in the area a while), and
when someone makes the
comment we all laugh now,
just as we did 35 years ago.
But I now stop and think
about how grateful I am that
this standing joke is so true.
Brevard was and is bursting
with musical talent. And this
is nothing new in the least,
which is why I would like to
try to go to the beginning as

much as I am personally able, and give homage to as many as
I can by trying to tell the stories that I am able to relate. From
the beginning comes the present which produced bands such
as Dave Fiester and the Groovemonsters, and made Brevard
County’s abundance of so many very special musicians to be
seen whenever we like, the envy of areas not so lucky.
Of course the bands I remember begin in the 60’s. One
of the most loved and listened to bands that I have already
talked about (1964 in Cocoa Beach) was none other than
“The Fantastic Group”. A very different time, a very different
Cocoa Beach. And then there were the “Tropics”, and a group
I would like to mention, “The Tasmanians”. I frequented the
“Tigers Den” in Cocoa many times to see this band, just as I
was always in the front to see and hear “The Fantastic Group”
and “The Tropics”. These bands were so great, you didn’t
need anything else, and there were so many bands coming up
behind (musicians who were younger by 2 to 3 years, playing
catch up, but in later years would play together with Kenny
Cohen and others who were the first), and maybe it was at
this early age I began becoming spoiled. I remember taking
it for granted that my friends and I would go out on Friday
and/or Saturday night and have a great time and couldn’t
ask for better music to dance to, just listen and appreciate, or
stand around and listen while with your friends. But whatever
you were doing the music would always catch your attention,
and even though the land, population, so many things have
changed over the years in the area, that is one thing that has
not. Brevard definitely still possesses the musicians with the
ability to grab your attention, which is why people drive from
Orlando on a weekend when our local musicians don’t book a
gig in their town.
The band I mentioned earlier “The Tasmanians”, would
later become “Transcontinental Mercy Flight” with a couple
of changes in members who ultimately would be Robbin
Thompson, Henry (Hank) Saunders, Joe Billington, Jim Nash
and John Lane.
- Brevard Live August 2006
This was a group of high school kids being promoted by
Jim Kennedy, the disc jockey for the one and only rock-n-roll
station in the area, WTAI. Like the “Fantastic Group”, they
would take off on a tour to Virginia Beach and Washington,
receiving a great reception wherever they played. But just
before beginning their tour they would have the opportunity
to open for “Spirit” at the Merritt Island Auditorium. The
auditorium was formerly the Merritt Island skating rink where
I spent many weekend nights skating. The really unusual
thing about this skating rink is that instead of playing records
to skate by, they would have live bands. Also opening for
“Spirit” this particular night was “The Fantastic Group”, and
looking up to Kenny Cohen as a bass player, John (who was
one of the upcoming musicians) says he still remembers as he
walked off the stage at the same time “The Fantastic Group”
was coming on, Kenny shaking his hand and saying “good
job”. It made quiet an impression on him.
continued next month
“Transcontinental Mercy Flight” all decked out in the then
very popular “Guru” jackets which John Lane’s mother
made for the band. I still have the remnants of the left over
material.

BREVARD LIVE MUSIC AWARDS
THE BMAs 2006
WHERE AND WHEN?
• The Brevard Live Music Awards takes
place Monday, August 28th, 6 pm at
the Henegar Center in Downtown
Melbourne (across the street from the
main post office). Admission is $10.
THE PROGRAM:
• Doors open at 5:30 pm. Beer and wine
is being served in the reception room.
• The show starts at 6:30 pm with a
patriotic theme played by delta-blues
guitarist Ernie Southern.
• Our Master of Ceremony, Chris Long,
welcomes the audience and introduces
our musical host, The Danny Morris
Band. During the award show the band
will feature four of Brevard’s favorite female vocalists: Anna Delgado
(Delgado), Debby Boyer (Austin Pettit
Band), Brenda Everling (Medusa), and a
new star on the horizon - Katti.
• There won’t be a “Super Jam” during
the intermission this year. Instead we
want to invite everyone to mingle in the
reception room, enjoy a beverage, mingle with musicians, explore our vendor
table where musicians can leave band
information, their business cards etc.
• The event will end at 9 pm with the
announcement of the “Entertainer of the
Year 2006”. A limousine will pick up
the winners and take them to Siggy’s in
Palm Bay which hosts the first “BMA
After Party”. Shuttle service from the
Henegar Center to Siggy’s and back will
be provided by Hoppers.

readers have filled out the ballots to
vote and we counted them.
In the past two months we
introduced Medusa, Black Eyed Soul,
Pinch - and this month you can read
about the Middle Finger Band (page

(page 41). Along with the popularity
awards Brevard Live Magazine will

THE AFTER PARTY
Instead of trying to keep the wine
and beer out of the Henegar Center’s
auditorium and closing the event at 10
pm, we want to “party til the cows come
home”. Siggy’s on Malabar Road in
Palm Bay is the place to celebrate that
night. The Matt Sams Band will host a
jam that our “Most Favorites” can join
in. Come out and “let your hair down”.

BIGGEST REGGAE
SHOW EVER TO
COME TO BREVARD
T
his is the biggest show we’ve
ever produced at the Cocoa
Beach Pier,” said Giles Malone,
president of the CB Pier. “Even bigger than the legendary Beach Boys
concert a couple of years ago!”
As a matter of fact, it is so big that
the Pier couldn’t handle the entire
production and partnered with the
House Of Blues. “Hopefully the
beginning of a beautiful friendschip,” said Giles who wouldn’t
mind bringing more giant shows to
the pier.
Indeed, the shows on the beach
are magical with your feet in the
sand and the sound of the ocean behind you. 4,500 tickets are for sale
and they’re going fast. The prices
range from $69 for reserved seating
to $29 for general admission (bring
your own blanket). There will be a
free shuttle service from the Merritt
Square Mall, USA in Cape Canaveral, and from Sheppard Park in
Cocoa Beach.
Doors open at 5pm for the big
show on Saturday, August 12th, but
all weekend long reggae will rule
the pier. Giles: “The restaurants will
feature special entrees like Rasta
Pasta to give the venue the right
flavor for the sound.
Live entertainment with
Brevard’s hottest reggae fusion
bands will start Friday night (the
night before the show) and continue
all Saturday. George Toler of Jamaikin Me Crazy (every Wednesday
at the pier): “We booked Boxelder,
New School Drop Outs, The Light
Out Project and many other great
bands.” George was involved in
the last Reggae Sunsplash in 1992
featured at The Mill in Orlando.
“Reggae Sunsplash is one of the
best produced shows worldwide.”

UB 40: A “LABOR OF LOVE” FOR 25 YEARS
U
B40’s first album was released in September 1980. The album cover was a reproduction of the unemployment benefit card, with the
title “Signing Off” rubber-stamped in red. It referred to “signing off” the
dole, i.e. getting a job. It was both an acknowledgement of the launch
of the band, and a celebration of their new status. Nobody knew then
just how busy this new band was going to be!
Only nine months after their first
album “Signing Off”, while it was still
in the chart, UB40 released their second
album “Present Arms” featuring the
song “One In Ten”, an anthem to rival
“Food For Thought”. One year later, in
September 1983, UB40 released the album “Labour of Love”. It was their first
direct tribute to the musicians who had
inspired and influenced them, and the
title “Labour Of Love” said it all. “Red
Red Wine” was the first single to be
released from Labour of Love, it went
straight to number one in the UK charts
upon its release. It gave UB40 their first
truly worldwide hit and, eventually,
their first American No.1.
“The Best Of UB40 - Volume One”,
released in November ‘87, stayed in the
UK charts for 123 weeks. “Baggariddim”, their adventurous 1985 collabo-
ration with local DJs also contained
“Don’t Break My Heart” and “I Got You
Babe” (with Chrissie Hynde). Chrissie Hynde joined the band again for
“Breakfast In Bed”, the hit of the 1988
album simply called “UB40”.
In 1989, the band released a second
helping of “Labour Of Love”, from
which “Kingston Town” and “Homely
Girl” were hits throughout Europe,
while “Here I Am” and “The Way You
Do The Things You Do” were similarly
successful in the United States.
Success continued throughout the
Nineties with the release of “Promises
and Lies” which became the group’s
biggest selling album worldwide, selling
in excess of 9 million copies, and produced the hit single “Can’t Help Falling
In Love”, giving the band their third UK
No. 1. “Guns In the Ghetto”, released

in 1997, included the single “Tell Me
Is It True”, which was featured in the
film “Speed II”. With “UB40 Present
The Dancehall Album”, a collaboration
with leading Jamaican dancehall artists,
including Beenie Man and Lady Saw,
the band reaffirmed their commitment
to reggae.
In 2001, a new studio album
“Cover Up” was released and the band
marked the 21st anniversary of their debut album “Signing Off” with a British
tour and a celebratory birthday concert
at the NEC in Birmingham in aid of the
United Nations AIDS Awareness Campaign.
“The Fathers Album”, a project
that took three years in the making,
featured the band working with a string
of legendary reggae artists such as Toots
Hibbert, Gregory Isaacs and John Holt,
was released in 2002.
In 2003, UB40 received an Ivor
Novello Award for International
Achievement and secured a Top Ten
album with the “Platinum Collection”,
a triple box set comprising the whole
“Labour of Love” series. Their 22nd
album, “Homegrown”, included “Swing
Low”, the official anthem for the
England rugby team’s triumphant 2003
World Cup campaign in Australia. The
song became the group’s 49th UK chart
single. The only bands to have notched
up more hits are The Shadows, Status
Quo and Queen.
Two years later, on the 25th anniversary of their recording debut, the
album “Who You Fighting For” was
released. Like all memorable UB40
albums, it strikes the perfect balance between the personal and the universal. It
features great love songs such as “Gotta
Tell Someone” and the romantic ballad
“One Woman Man”.
In April 2005 UB40 united with
Roger Daltrey, Eric Clapton and John
Mayer to play their first ever show at the
Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The band was then
invited to perform at the Live8 event
in London’s Hyde Park, alongside U2,
Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Madonna, Robbie
Williams and The Who.
Touring continues throughout 2006,
visiting countries such as Mozambique,
Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific
Islands, Hawaii and continuing on to the
US and Canada.

ENDEVERAFTER
N
ot since Guns & Roses stormed onto the
international scene in 1987 has a shirtless,
long haired band of young denim and leather clad,
Les Paul slinging upstarts so shamelessly dared
to wave the rock and roll banner like California’s
Endeverafter.
Barely out of their
teens, these guys should be
influenced by the so-called
“chartbusters” of today,
however, they actually claim
such classic artists as The
Stones, Rod Stewart, and
Led Zeppelin as influences.
“Aerosmith’s Rocks
album changed my life,”
confessed front man/guitarist Michael Grant while preparing for a recent show in
North Dakota. “It’s just pure
music.” In fact, the entire
band shares a deep sense of
musical spirituality that has
little to do with today’s pop
“machine.”
“My dad listened to
Kristan Mallory live in Texas Motown and my mom was
into 50s ‘Elvis’ music,”
recalled 22 year old guitarist Kristan Mallory while
listening to Ryan Adam’s
latest, just prior to soundcheck in Dallas, Texas. And
although he admits to a sixth
grade fascination with such
mid 90s R&B acts as Boys
II Men and Montell Jordan
it was the discovery of his
friend’s parent’s vintage
vinyl collection that would
ultimately change his life.
Classic records like Frampton Comes Alive and The
Cream of Clapton would
prove to lay the foundation
Endeverafter’s Michael Grant for his musical future.
Although success has
come quickly for Endeverafter (they signed to Sony after
just twelve shows) their success is no accident. Even before
they were old enough to drink, this hungry, hard working
band had already dedicated itself to “making it.” In fact,
while their high school peers were agonizing over such life

POISON-TOUR
OPENING FOR POISON
O
by Chris Long
ver the last decade or so
I’ve traveled around the
country performing with
my own bands and I’ve also spent
considerable time in recent years
on the road, here and there, hanging out with and interviewing a
variety of platimun-coated rockers as well. However, none of my
previous music biz experiences
could have possibly prepared me
for the non-stop, 24/7 insanity of
my current role this summer as
(of all things) a personal assistant on Poison’s 20th anniversary
world tour. Get ready kids, ‘cuz
the biggest show in rock is coming to Florida this month and I’m
right smack in the middle of the
action!
For a “rocker dude” like myself,
getting paid to be on tour with one of
my all-time favorite bands is a dream
come true. I’ve had the privilege of
interviewing the members of Poison
several times throughout their amazing chart-busting career and over the
years I’ve actually developed both a
personal and professional relationship
with the guys. So when I actually got
the offer to work for them full-time, I
jumped at the chance.
One question that I’m often
asked about my new gig is “What
exactly does a personal assistant actually do?” Well, the job can involve
almost anything from “lugging” lug-

gage to providing personal security
for the band. Although I’m not quite
high enough on the “totem pole” to be
included in private band meetings, I
am “inside” enough to have seen all of
their “Johnsons” in the ol’ after show
shower and let me tell ya; that C.C.
DeVille has a lot to be proud of! I’m
even actually on stage with the band
during the show and when the pyro
is detonated, flames and explosions
are going off about two feet from my
head.
From hanging out regularly with
a proverbial “who’s who” of backstage celebrities, to entertaining the
nightly after show “honeys,” life on
the road is in many ways an awesome
non-stop party but at the same time
it also involves a lot of non-stop hard
work. 18 hour work days “schlepping” in the summer heat is usually
the norm. In fact, my specific role
working for bassist Bobby Dall is so
intense and fast paced that simply
finding time to write this particular
mini-feature proved to be a real challenge and took weeks to complete.
Now, I’m not saying that working for
Bob is impossible, but I have recently
learned the words to several old Negro spirituals! Once the tour is over,
and I can get back home, I promise to
file a more complete and compelling,
in depth, behind the scenes report
about my experiences on the road
with groupies and farm animals but
for now I just want to quickly convey
what a great show this is and what
Florida rockers can expect when we
get to the Sunshine State.
From video screens and lasers to
a dazzling, state-of-the-art light show
and skull crushing sound system, this
is the most expensive and elaborate
production Poison has ever taken
on the road. Add to that, 20 years
worth of unforgettable, timeless, hard
rockin’ classics like Talk Dirty To Me,
Every Rose Has Its Thorn, Unskinny
Bop, Something To Believe In, and
Nothing But A Good Time and you’ve
got one helluva show. And as if that
weren’t enough they’ve even thrown
in a little extra “bang for the buck”
in the form of special multi-platinum
guests Cinderella and newcomers
Endeverafter who just happen to be
California’s greatest rock export since
Guns & Roses.
Poison’s new 20 Years Of Rock
CD has quickly become a bonafied
Top 20 gold smash and from coast-tocoast the crowds have been amazing.
The Florida dates are selling quickly
so quit slackin’ and get your tick-
ets soon or you just might get stuck
experiencing Rikki Rockett’s amazing
drum solo from the parking lot this
year. And believe me, that’s something that you DON’T want to miss!
I miss all of my Brevard friends
but I’ll see you all again soon. Look
for my “mega” post tour feature in
the October issue. Rock on!

will enjoy the Steve Miller
Memorial Blues Bash Saturday,
August 26th, from 11 am to 11
pm at the Space Coast HarleyDavidson shop on Palm Bay
Road. It’s been a great effort to
keep the memory alive of one
of the greatest bluesman who
lived and played in this county
for many years - Steve Miller!
Steve Miller? No, it’s not the one
who wrote “Fly Like An Eagle”. This
Steve Miller (keyboard/vocals) performed with the famous Elvin Bishop
Blues Band for many years and with
Grinderswitch, where he met blues
guitarist Austin Pettit, and that’s how
Steve Miller came to Brevard County.
He and Austin joined forces with the
late bluesman Dave Fiester and they
became the legendary Groove Monsters who rocked the Space Coast for
over a decade.
The event is produced by EARTH
Awareness aka Sue Luley who has
worked as production assistant for
one of Florida’s premier stage, sound
and lighting company, Jack Link &
Associates, for many years. The annual Blues Cruise, the Melbourne Art
Festival, and the Jacksonville Jazz
Festival are just some of her gigs. And
that’s how Sue got the idea to organize a not-for-profit music festival.

She launched her project in 1999 at the
Spirit of Swannee Music Park in Live
Oak camp ground featuring Les Dudek,
Badfinger and a band that came all the
way from Grand Cayman. Sue and 200
volunteers from Brevard County came
out “to conquer the world”, 187 people
paid admission, and Sue lost “her butt”.
With over $10,000 in debt, Sue didn’t
give up but realized that her future festivals would be held in Brevard County.
In 2000 and 2001 the EARTH
Awareness festivals took place at F.
Burton Smith Park (off 520 near Cocoa)
and Sue came close to “breaking even”.

and death issues as prom dates and SAT scores the members of Endeverafter had
already moved in together, away from mommy and daddy in order to better focus
on their music.
But they’ve come along way since their early local club days. As opening act
on Poison’s current North American tour Endeverafter now wows crowds nightly
from coast-to-coast with their “lizzyesque” live show. At one recent West Coast
gig, Grant was actually compared to by one jubilant female fan as a cross between
Freddy Mercury, Axl Rose, and Steven Tyler. Not bad for a group whose generation typically shuns the “rock star” image. But as bassist Tommi Andrews recently
put it, “In music you gotta have somebody to look up to.”

CLASSIC ROCK
SM MEMORIAL BASH continued
ers were that “it was still too far away
from town”. Sue listened and decided
to move the festival to Wickham Park
Pavillion in March 2002. Headliners
were the Chicago Blues Legends - Bob
Margolin, Willie “Big Eye” Smith, Bob
Stroger, and everyone knew that this
festival would be the “break-through”.
But on the day of the show the weather
turned freezing cold with severe rainstorms that made any outdoor activity
impossible. What to do? Sue made some
phone calls and convinced Kevin Zepka,
owner of the former That’s It Antique
Bar, which was closed on Sundays, to
open his place and stage for the Chicago Blues Legends. Sue: “50 people
followed us over to Melbourne and
enjoyed a great show.”
The following year, 2003, Sue
held the EARTH Awareness festival
at Kiwanis Island in Merritt Island - a
moderate success that allowed Sue to
buy some very needed instruments for
our local school programs.
Later on that year local bluesman Steve Miller fell severely ill. His
wife Janet Miller had to take a leave
from work to take care of her husband.
Austin Pettit called Jack Link and Sue
to arrange a benefit concert because
Steve’s family was in desperate need
of help. In August 2003 the first Steve
Miller Blues Bash was held at Kiwanis
Islands, almost 5,000 people showed
up and the event raised over $30,000.
Sadly enough, Steve Miller passed away
four days before the Blues Bash, and it
became a Memorial Concert to benefit
the Miller family.
To keep Steve Miller’s memory
alive, his wife Janet and friend Sue
decided to make this an annual festival
to raise money for the EARTH Awareness cause - to support music programs
in local schools.
In August 2004, the event was held
again at Kiwanis Island, but the following year, 2005, Sue and Janet wanted to
move it to a different facility - the new
Space Coast Harley-Davidson shop on
Palm Bay Road. The first advertising
cards were printed up when Sue got the
bad news: Due to bad rain storms the

THE AMAZING
RHYTHM ACES
T
hirty years ago in
a Memphis recording studio The Amazing
Rhythm Aces™ made
their first album, “Stacked
Deck”. It was simply
American music - a mixed
bag of influences that had
drawn them together. Fans didn’t seem to care about labels, either. For more than
two decades, songs like “Third Rate Romance”, “Amazing Grace (Used To Be
Her Favorite Song)” and the Grammy-winning “The End Is Not In Sight” would
remain etched in the hearts and minds of a generation as benchmarks of popular
music’s better days. After recording six more albums and touring with everyone
from Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet to Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles the
group disbanded in 1981, but its songs lived on as radio staples and its albums
were coveted by collectors.
In 1995 the original Aces teamed up to record a collection of their bestknown material. Titled “Ride Again” and released on their own Breaker Records
label, it was their first-ever CD. Reaction was positive. The band played a few
club dates, then booked a tour of Australia, where they’d always enjoyed a large
following. Interest was booming stateside as well, and The Aces returned to play
venues throughout the US. In late ‘96 they recorded “Out Of The Blue”, an album
of new material also released on Breaker. By 1997, the re-formation was official;
The Aces were back as a full-time band.
“Nothin’ But The Blue”s is The Aces newest studio album. It features fourteen songs, five co written with The Aces new guitarist and bluesmeister Fred
James, and one tune with “The Dynamic Willie T.” (Billy Earheart) with guest
performances by Jimmie Hall and Gary Nicholson. The Aces, Rockin’ in the 21st

new Harley-Davidson shop wouldn’t
be open in time for the festival. But
cancelling the event was not an option.
Owner Lou from Lou’s Blues was called
for help and graceously agreed to host
the 3rd annual Steve Miller Memorial
Blues Bash raising about $10,000 for
the cause.
This year, the beautiful and brandnew SC Harley-Davidson facility on
Palm Bay Road with an outside (but
covered) stage will host the event
featuring 14 bands and two headliners,
Eric Culberson and Artimus Pyle, all
that for $10 donation at the door. The
show starts at 11 am and ends at 11 pm.
An “After Jam” is planned at Tequila
Willie’s on Palm Bay Road and Artimus Pyle has promised to join our local
musicians.
Sue wants to thank all her helpers, the musicians and the sponsors that
make these events possible. A special
thank you goes to Zion Blackhand,
a harp player in a wheel-chair, who
donated a generous amount of money to
make this festival happen.

THE RETURN OF THE HEROES!
Superman Returns
Starring: Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey,
Frank Langella & Parker Posey. Rated PG13. Running
Time 157 Minutes
Look! It’s a Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s Superman! Why
LOOK? If he is returning where the heck has he been and
what new & exciting life experiences does he bring to the
cinema viewing audience? None. The original TV series in the
mid 50’s starring George Reeves was brimming in imagination and relevance. The 4 big-screen remakes of the late 70’s
thru the mid 80’s starring Christopher Reeve rekindled the
public’s interest in the Man of Steel. Now in 2006 he returns
but the story remains the same. Superman is back after 5 years
of visiting his home planet Krypton and immediatly saves a
NASA Shuttle and also a big Jet Airliner. The FX work in this
film is quite extraordinary as it was directed by Bryan Singer,
the dude who helmed the first 2 X-Men movies. His style
and panache teamed with his superhero knowledge takes this
one as far as it can go. The newcomer Routh who portrays
the “Big Guy” is rather unique in his own style as the hero
with a little vulnerability. Another virtual newcomer Kate
Bosworth plays Lois Lane, the love of the caped Superhunk’s
life. (She was in Wonderland, Blue Crush, Beyond the Sea...
now she is in a blockbuster.) We’ll be hearing more from her
in the future, I’m sure. 2 time Oscar winner Spacey plays the
criminal mastermind Lex Luthor. He is evil personified, very
direct and demanding, he wants to own and operate his own
continent. Anyhoo, the chemistry between Superman and Lois
is cool, restrained and somewhat romantic, since she is now
married and has a kid. Superman’s alter-ego Clark Kent is
still mild mannered, fumbling, bumbling and mumbling. Long
story short, Superman foils the dastardly deeds of Lex Luthor
and saves America from certain perilous doom. Costing upwards of $300 million, if he were here today, the editor of the
Daily Planet, Perry White (Langella) would assuredly bellow
“Great Ceasar’s Ghost”.
C
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN:
DEAD MAN’S CHEST
Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley,
Bill Nighy. Rated PG 13. Running Time: 150 Minutes
It looks like mega-money-making producer Jerry Bruckheimer has done it again, by striking gold and plundering
the box-office in this sequel to the at-sea-romp of 2003. This
movie set a new record for the most money made in an opening weekend. Arrr...to the tune of $132 million, but who’s
counting. Depp, Bloom and Knightley have all returned and
so has director Gore Verbinski (he made 2 sequels at once,
so look for part 3 this time next year) Back also is the Black
Pearl, the title ship from the original flick. Swaggering Cap22 - Brevard Live August 2006
tain Jack Sparrow (Depp) in all his half gay and half drunk
glory returns as do lovers Will Turner (Bloom) and Liz Swann
(Knightley). Sparrow owes a blood debt to sea lord Davy
Jones (Nighy) who is a sight to behold with his Octopus’ face.
Jones is the keeper of an underwater sea monster known as
the Crack and he also helms a ship of undead fools called the
Flying Dutchman. Sparrow must find with Turner and Liz’s
help the secret of Jones’s hidden chest so he can... Oh.....
it’s just too contrived. Knightley is pretty feisty, Bloom is
vigorously valiant and Sparrow is flamboyant and funny. The
FX are spendid, the movie is entertaining, but in a Lord of the
Rings kinda way, Savvy? WARNING: We’ve seen this all
before and will again next year. While a friendly movie critic
could call this the best pirate movie of the year. I would tell
you that it’s the ONLY pirate movie of the year.
I give it a C for Sea Worthy

BILL VAN RIPER
SOME BRIEF THOUGHTS
T
he last few articles have been pretty heavy, so I thought
I’d lighten things up around here this month. I was going
to write another article on weird laws, because I find them so
fascinating, but some thoughts just popped into my brain. The
problem is, the words were all in alphabetical order, so I had
to sort them out. I hope I did it right. Let the games begin!
Ok, so here’s my weather report for Iraq: Mostly Sunni in
the north, but partly clowny in the rest of the country. Chance
of brain: 0%. And, by the way, if we went into Iraq for the oil,
how come oil prices are so friggin high? I had to sell my car
just to buy some gas. Now I have nowhere to put it. There is
one good thing that came out of these high gas prices, though:
it doesn’t take as long to pump 10 gallons of gas. And with
my hectic lifestyle, this is a plus. You’re not going to believe
it, but some weeks I have to work over 18 hours! I feel a nap
time coming on just thinking about it.
The house recently voted to outlaw Internet gambling.
The vote was 317-93. One more nail in the Freedom and
Democracy coffin. Actually, they just voted to forbid the use
of credit cards for betting on online gambling. I guess they
figure that will leave us more to blow on pornography, at
19.99% APR. Anyway, check this out:
‘The legislation would clarify current law to spell out
that most gambling is illegal online and would prohibit most
payment forms from being used to settle online wagers. The
measure also would empower law enforcement authorities to
work with Internet providers to block access to gambling Web
sites.’
If this bill goes through I’m moving to Moldavia, and
I don’t even gamble. Where the hell is that?, you ask? Just
hit Romania and make a right. You can’t miss it. As a small
aside, here is a fascinating stat about Romania: They have an
estimated 16 million cell phone users, 13.6 million internet
users, and only about 500,000 cars! I don’t know what it
means, but there’s gotta be a joke in there somewhere.
Another very strange thing I just noticed is that you
can’t type the word ‘internet’ into your word processor
without getting a red underline! Ahhh...what’s going on?
Well, I figured it out. The word has to be capitalized: Internet.
There. What really ticks me off about this is that the spelling
Gestapo in my word processor figures that nobody would use
the word ‘internet’ and not mean THE Internet, so let’s just
make it a mistake to do so. A bit presumptuous, aren’t we?
Of course there are ‘internets’ outside of the Internet, so I
think somebody needs to be punched, or at least fired. Another
small aside? Sure no problem. In my younger days I used to
get the word ‘gestapo’ and ‘gaspacho’ confused. As of the
present, I’m not so confused, so I don’t call the Melbourne
Beach cops ‘gaspachos’ anymore.
24 - Brevard Live August 2006
column
My cat, Fuzzwad is really big now. As such, he’s not the
blur-around-the-walls-of-my-apartment he once was. As a
matter of fact his favorite thing to do is lay on his back with
his paws over his head and stare at the ceiling. He does this
for really long periods of time. I know he does this because
most of the time, I’m doing the same thing right next to him.
We’ve really bonded well in the 8 months or so that I’ve
had him. We hunt together now. If he sees a bug on the wall
that he can’t get to, I’ll hold him up so he can reach it, or
I’ll smack the bug down to the floor. So now, when he sees
something he will come and meow at me, to hip me to the
fact, then I will follow him to the ‘hunting ground’ to see
what’s up. Sometimes I think he’s chasing electrons, though.
Ok, ok, ok....you want a few weird laws to hold you over
until next time? Here are some I really like:
In Chicago it is illegal to fish in your pajamas, or to bring
a French poodle (or should I say Freedom poodle? Is that
whole thing over yet?) to the opera. In Montana, it is illegal
for a wife to open her husband’s mail. In Nebraska it is illegal
for a mother to give her daughter a perm without a license,
whereas in Michigan, a man owns his wife’s hair (ewww). In
Port Huron, MI, the speed limit for an ambulance is 20 miles
an hour. In Mississippi, it is still legal to kill one’s servant. In
Kentucky it’s illegal to carry an ice cream cone in your back
pocket. (I think it should be illegal to be that stupid), and,
finally, in New Hampshire, it is illegal to die margarine pink.
Well, there you have it. If you feel the need to be a rebel
rousing renegade, now you have some choices.
What power has law where only money rules?

At Murdock’s In Cocoa:
SURPRISE WEDDING
Everybody who came to
Murdock’s in Cocoa Village
on Friday, July 7th, was there
to celebrate co-owner Stevie
Davis’ 50th birthday. And since
Stevie is a fabulous and popular
lady, a ton of people showed up,
and it was standing room only.
Then it happened: Surprise!
Surprise! Stevie Davis and longterm partner and fiance Randy
Whittaker got married. Only very few employees, who helped
to set up the surprise wedding, were informed. Even Stevie’s
mother (see photo) was caught by surprise. It certainly was a
great party with lots of cheers and many happy wishes for the
newly wed couple.
New & Original:
THE LIGHTS OUT PROJECT
The Lights Out Project is an eclectic mix of island music
and urban rhthyms sure to spark up your soul and move
your feet. By combining reggae, ska, Hawaiin and hip-hop
along with all original music, The Lights Out Project is sure
to impress any original music lover. Led on vocals by Jason
Noon along with Eric ‘E-Roc’ Hill (who both helped to create
the local sensation Indicasol) and topped off with rapper Cris
Falbo the music takes its audience on an upbeat urban musical
experience.
On bass guitar is the dynamic and ever funky Jon Hulland
who is the sound engineer and co-producer of much of the
music. Jon is accompanied on drums by Ivan ‘ I V’ Grammer
whose positive spiritual vibrations are evident in his ability
to keep the crowd dancing all night long. Ivan comes from a
family of professional musicians and it is plain to see in his
rhythmic abilities. And on lead guitar is the hawaiin slack
key master Justin Alderfer (former lead guitar player of
Indicasol) who can play just about anything that has strings.
Justin combines blazing reggae guitar with Hawaiin slack key,

which allows him to mimic
anything from pan flute to
saxaphone. The combination
of all these different
musicians and styles playing
original music is a show that
everyone should see.
Don’t miss your
opportunity to catch the
fresh new sounds of The
Lights Out Project playing all
throughout Brevard County
and beyond. You can find
the band at the SBI August

from 3-8pm; and Saturday,

joke,” says drummer Pat Bautz
and explains that the Middle Finger
Band is really a “jam band” consisting of professional musicians who are
involved in other projects but enjoy
playing together.
“We have been playing together for
about 1 1/2 years,” says Pat whose main
gig is being the drummer in the legendary rock band Three Dog Night. “We”
- that is Pat Bautz (drums) who started
this jam band, Kerry Morris (bass),
Johnny Berman (guitar), Will Powers
(guitar) and Chilli Head (keyboard).
Together they are jamming on some of the coolest rock tunes from the 60’s to the 80’s. This

sponsors of this year’s Stephen Miller Blues Bash. His
love of music and children, a

personal quest to “bring back

Born in Virginia, Zion
“put his finger on the map” in
2000 and became a resident
of Indian River County. Not
willing to give up his first
love of playing music, he
can often be seen wheeling
himself into almost any jam
session in the tri-county area,
and most often accompanies Delta Bluesman Ernie
Southern on a regular basis.
Influenced by the music of
John Lee Hooker, Johnny
Winter, and Duane Allman,
his favorite harp player is
Charlie Mc Coy. He is currently listening to Dr. John’s
version of Stagger Lee, as he
drives himself from jam to

Brevard Live August 2006 - 37
florida NEW RELEASES
STEVE THORPE : LIVE, DOWN AND DIRTY
12 Song CD
Steve Thorpe has just released
his second full length album, Live
Down and Dirty shows the Kentucky
born blues man at his best. He’s a live
performer first, he says that’s the proving ground for any blues band “My
favorite albums have always been the
live ones. That’s where you really hear
what a player is about, and I wanted to
to capture the band in the same way.”
Recorded at Lou’s Blues Indialantic and
Dirty Harry’s in Daytona Beach.
The set opens with a rollicking
medley of “Dust My Broom/Boot
Hill” that features Thorpe’s throaty
vocals and an aggressive slide guitar.
Each instrumental break he trades off
with keyboardist Kenny Clarke. The
stinging guitar riffs are answered by
Clarke’s high octane response. “Boot
Hill” shows the varied influences that
shaped Thorpe. Written by Don Rich (of
Buck Owens band The Buckaroos) who
pioneered alternate tunings that helped
make the Buck Owens sound so distinctive.
“The Thrill Is Gone” is the first of
38 - Brevard Live August 2006
three B.B. King songs included here
and gives son Nathan Thorpe the opportunity to provide a creeping bottomend base line. Thorpe says Nathan is
“already playing on another wavelength
from me” incorporating varied influences and theory that makes Thorpe the
younger as comfortable laying it down
in a blues setting or stretching out to
jazz and world music influences like
Morrocan and Eqyptian! “Little Bit” is
a mid tempo groove made up of equal
parts funk blues and rock. Here again
Nathan’s bass is accented perfectly by
Tom Bayes precise drum beats. Bayes
plays as if holding back enough to give
each beat enough space to punctuate the
the pulsing baseline.
BB Kings “Never Make A Move
Too Soon” gets a fierce guitar attack
from Thorpe. “Flower Girl”, an orignal
and his version of Hendrix’s “Little
Wing” were culled from live shows at
bike week in Daytona and were recorded right off the board, so they’re very
clean with minimal crowd response.
The live energy of Thorpe’s stage show
is well captured. His heavy use of BB
King songs is evidence of Thorpe’s deep
reverence of him. “I like to play what
I listen to and it’s still BB and Willie Dixon.” Thorpe’s rootsy treatment
of BB Kings “Every Day I Have The
Blues” rivals the original in energy and
heart (not an easy thing to do).
Also included on this live set are
songs by Bill Broonzy (“Key To The
Highway”), “They Call It Stormy
Monday” by T Bone Walker and Willie
Dixon’s “Young Fashion Ways”. Anoth-
er high energy medley of “Sweet Little
Angel/How Blue Can You Get” give the
whole band time to stretch and Thorpe
gives them plenty of room to do it.
The album closes with a Steve Thorpe
original titled “Hurricane Grays”, which
is strong enough to make you wish he’d
included a few more originals on this
set.

KENNY COHEN: SAX ON THE BEACH
14 Song CD
Another great live recording by
Saxmaster Kenny C featuring his esteemed colleague Mr. Mike Harrington,
Grandmaster on guitar. Two all-time favorite musicians playing alltime favorite
tunes like “On The Sunny Side of the

“America the Beautiful”. It’s a musthave in your collection of memories and
good times. Kenny C. and Mr. Mike
have all along become the music of the
Space Coast. Thank you for all your
great music!

JQB
T
hese three letters stand for the
“John Quinlivan Band”, and
since this is a little long, it’s “JQB”
(and try to repeat that fast three times,
then you know why we still take the
time to spell it out!). Formed in February, this band is brand-new, even
though some of the musicians are
well-known in this county.
In the beginning of the year,
frontman/guitarist/vocalist John
Quinlivan of “Absolute Blue”- fame,
left the band that he co-founded to
persue a new band with a new sound.
After a short hiatus, he was back on Brevard’s stages and has been busy performing ever since.
The musicians around him are Ken Morris who plays keys, harp, mandoline, guitar, and sings
too; Terry Wallace on bass, and Mike St. Peter on drums.
And while Absolute Blue as “Entertainer of the Year 2004” cannot participate in the Brevard
Live Music Awards anymore (yes, once you get the highest honor you retire from this popularity contest!), the new John Quinlivan Band, being a new band with a new sound, can be nominated - and lo and behold, they were!

You Can See Them BEFORE They Become Famous:
ROCK’S UP & COMING BANDS AT THE METRO
F
rom New York to Canada, rockers alike come from all over to shake
the very foundations of the The Metro Entertainment complex. Hybrid
L and Echo Valve from Georgia and the Florida based Allele, who’s been
touring with acts such as Staind, Shinedown, and Saliva, have made their
mark at The Metro. Also, groups such as Sound Central from Canada
and the Sex Slaves from New York City, and the upcoming Mr. Bella, are
among the many bands playing this West Melbourne multi-stage venue.
The Sex Slaves, whose new album,
“Bite Your Tongue,” released through
Radical Records, recently played at The
Metro as one of their stops on a U.S.
tour. Their song, “Thank God for Jack
Daniels” has been added to the play list
at rock stations around the country, to
include Sioux City, Iowa’s Z98 rock
station, Dallas, Texas’ KDBN 93.3, and
KSHE 95 out of St. Louis, Missouri.
These guys are true “Rock & Roll.”
The sounds of Allele, out of
Jacksonville, still echo through the halls
of The Metro from their November 2005
performance. The group includes Kelly
Hayes, former guitarist of Cold, and is
working with Corporate Punishment
Records president Thom Hazaert. Their
debut album, “Point of Origin” is in
stores now.
While there are bands coming to
The Metro all the way from Canada,
there are still plenty of local acts making
themselves Metro alumni. Berman,
out of Orlando, Missing Picket from
Palm Bay, and The Metro’s very own
Sleeping With Sybil, lead by front man
and Metro co-owner, Joe Haile, are just
a few of the many local area artists to go
see.
Coming soon to The Metro are Ten
Count Fall out of Ohio, Vocal Drop
from Leesburg, and Stemm Cell, who
recently played the Hard Rock Live
in Orlando. To check a calendar of
future acts and show dates, visit www.

Conchy Joe’s/Abaco Jack’s In Eau Gallie Is Closed:
THE END OF AN ERA...
W
as anybody surprised when Abaco Jack’s closed its doors in
June? Ever since the new owners took over the popular river
restaurant and bar Conchy Joe’s, people were talking about it. Many
predicted that it would become another condominium development,
others were hoping it would stay the same...
Fred Ayres from Jenssen Beach
rebuilt the former historical hotel using
some of the original building to create
a beautiful place on the river. When
Conchy Joe’s opened its doors in 1993,
it was an example for great hospitality
and entertainment.
Fred Ayres was a gracious restaurant owner, loved and respected by his
employees, managers and customers.
He provided live music up to six days a
week, a happy hour buffet that everyone
talked about, and crab races that became
very popular. Tiki-Ed was invited to do
his carvings on the deck from the day it
opened.
When the new owners bought
Conchy Joe’s, the atmosphere changed.
Some of the longtime employees were
let go - along with the happy hour
buffet, the crab races (they’re now at
Crickets), the TV Trivia Games; and
less music. The party was over!
Many “regulars” got upset and
stayed away. Others, like Bill Rigg,
don’t want to give up hope. He wrote a
letter: “This facility was operated for 12

5th Avenue Galaxy Grille in Indialantic:
HOT MENU, COOL JAZZ, CONTEMPORARY ATMOSPHERE
W
e picked the perfect night to visit Indialantic’s Galaxy Grill on 5th
Avenue. Open for lunch since January, this charming beach restaurant has served a variety of salads, sandwiches, wraps and pizzas.
Just recently the Grille added a new dinner menu along with live entertainment, and our Monday night’s special was Billy Van Riper’s Jazz
Jam along with Fettuccine Alfredo and a fresh, crispy Calypso Salad.
While the lunch menu features
lots of “All American” sandwiches and
wraps like BLT, Turkey Club, Reuben,
Tuna Melt etc., the dinner menu is
“Classic Italian” with all-time favorites
like Chicken Marsala, Veal Parmesan,
Lasagne, Shrimp Scampi, Baked Ziti
and all kinds of comfort-pasta-dishes
that melt in your mouth. Guests that
want to watch their diet can choose
from nine different salads that are easy
on your waist-line and don’t leave you
hundgry.
We tried both - the rich and tasty
Fettuccine Alfredo smothered in lots of
cream sauce with generous pieces of
chicken. (It was a generous helping, too
much for me, and my dining-partner
was happy to scuff up half of my meal.)
And the Calypso Salad with roasted
chicken breast, mixed greens, mandarin
oranges, walnuts, onion, tomatoes and
a Raspberry vinaigrette that looked as
beautiful as it tasted.
Before we finished our meals the
place filled up quickly and soon every
seat in the house was taken. The jazz
jam, hosted by Billy Van Riper featuring
many great local jazz players, was about
to begin.
The music was the best dessert in
this county that night. The amount of
talent that showed up to jam was incredible, and the atmosphere so relaxing as
if you sat in your best friends livingroom.
Along with good food and cool
music 6 nights a week, Galaxy Grille offers a fabulous wine bar and beers from
around the world.
Located at 147 5th Avenue,
Indialantic. Open 6 days, closed on
Tuesdays. Serving lunch 11am-3pm,
dinner starting at 5pm. Call 321-7285888.

Yellow Dog Café In Malabar:
CULINARY EXPERIENCE ON THE INDIAN RIVER
Y
ellow Dog Café seems
to have it all together.
They’ve got the food, the
location and a new valet parking
service — the recipe for a truly
successful and unique Brevard
restaurant.
by Eroica Fedder
It was a tough decision: Rack of
Lamb or Roasted Duckling. It was my
first time at The Yellow Dog Café in
Malabar (gasp, yes, first time) and I was
impressed by the diverse menu. I finally
decided on the duck while my dining
partner had her heart set on the Pan
Seared Salmon. We thought we had it all
figured out, but there were more choices
we had yet to make. Which wine?
Which salad? Potato or vegetable?
Needless to say, we needed some time
to think. So we ordered the Spinach
Stuffed Portobello to help us decide.
It didn’t take us long to finish
the appetizer. The moist spinach
filled Portobello was topped with
artichoke hearts, roasted peppers
and havarti cheese. A combination
that was equal to a nearly orgasmic
appetizer. Nearly!
Our server, Joti Hahn, who has
been with the café for over 6
years, helped us with the rest of our
decisions. She suggested a unique wine
called Evolution. It’s a crazy mix of
Zinfandel, Riesling, Chardonnay and
some other flavors that will have your
mouth dancing with each sip. The great
thing is, you almost never get the same
sip twice. Each time you take a taste the
wine lets out yet another flavor. That
kept the evening interesting.
I like salads, but the first thing
that enters my mind when I enter a
restaurant isn’t “I wonder what kind of
salad comes with the meal.” That’s why
I was so surprised to have a one-of-akind salad placed before me shortly after
we ordered. The collage of mixed baby
greens, kidney beans, pumpkin seeds,
feta and some other goodies was topped
off with a Yellow Dog original salad
dressing that was out of this world.
Combined, the ingredients created
a salad taste rarely experienced
when getting a house salad.
Having devoured our preentrée goodies, we set off on a tour
of the restaurant hosted by Joti and
learned that there are more options
for diners. We were seated in the room
labeled the patio, which has a stunning
view of the river and the recently built
dock, but there are two other rooms in
which one may dine. There is the Green
Room, where one can watch the chefs
prepare their meal and gaze at the river
and the Library downstairs with yet
another stunning view of the river and
walls lined with books.
Joti also showed us the Yellow Dog
album where pictures from the very
beginning of this unique restaurant can
be found. Owners Stuart and Nancy
Borton bought the restaurant and nearly
gutted and re-furbished the interior to
make it the Café it is today. Odd as it
may seem, opening night for the Yellow
Dog Café was a very rainy February 13,
1998 — a Friday. But despite the Friday
the 13th reputation the restaurant came
in with a bang.
Nancy said her opening night was
every restaurateur’s dream come true.
Since then the café has been going
strong but Nancy doesn’t take all the
credit for it. She says that one of the
most important parts about having a
successful restaurant is the staff. They
have perfected their service and even
the recipes for the restaurant.
Nearly all of Yellow Dog’s recipes
are original and are a compilation of
the café’s chefs and Nancy’s husband
Stuart. Even the salad dressings are
creations made by Stuart and his staff,
so it’s no surprise that he plans to come
out with a Yellow Dog cookbook filled
with original recipes in the near future.
By the time we’d toured the café
and flipped through the photo album
our meal was ready. The plates placed
in front of us were so beautiful it was
almost a sin to touch them and mess up
the culinary art. My duck entrée came
with potato cakes and string beans,
both of which were delicious. The duck
itself was moist and tangy, roasted to a
slightly crisp perfection on the outside.
The seared salmon also had a beauty
about it. It was served on top of a

risotto cake, drizzled with a mild garlic sauce and topped with
asparagus. The beautifully arranged dishes lasted just long
enough to snap the photos.
After dinner we decided to take a walk down the
restaurant’s new dock and admire the sunset. We also needed
to walk off some of the food we’d just eaten and prepare
for desert. The newly built dock is not the only addition the
Yellow Dog has planned. Nancy says that there are plans in
the works for some outside seating.
“I’m hoping that by this time next year we’ll be sipping
on Martinis by the river,” Nancy said. She added that they
also plan to allow dogs on their planned deck.
We were still stuffed when we came back inside but Joti
came out with a tray full of deserts that made that little pocket
open up in your stomach. The wide variety of tempting treats
gave us yet another difficult decision to make, but we quickly
decided on their Boston Crème, which came served with
whipped cream and a thin dog-shaped cookie.
After visiting the Yellow Dog Café myself, it’s clear why
they have such a successful business. And in case you hadn’t
heard, Nancy and Stuart are at it again. They recently opened
Stuart’s Bistro in Indiatlantic.
Yellow Dog Café is located at 905 U.S. Highway 1 in
Malabar. Meals range from $9-$15 for lunch and $21-$45
for dinner.

Health-Guru Hagen Panton:
DAMN MOSQUITOS! PART 1
Y
ou’re flipping burgers for the neighborhood barbecue, and the mosquitoes have already begun their
feast - on you!! As you swat madly at the pests, you
notice other folks seem completely unfazed. Could
it be that mosquitoes prefer dining on some humans
It’s true. Mosquitoes do exhibit
blood-sucking preferences, say the
experts. “One in 10 people are highly
attractive to mosquitoes,” reports Jerry
Butler, PhD, professor emeritus at the
University of Florida. But it’s not dinner they’re sucking out of you. Female
mosquitoes - males do not bite people
- need human blood to develop fertile
eggs. Apparently, not just anyone’s.
Who Mosquitoes Like Best
While researchers have yet to
pinpoint what mosquitoes consider an
ideal hunk of human flesh, the hunt
is on. “There’s a tremendous amount
of research being conducted on what
compounds and odors people exude
that might be attractive to mosquitoes,”
says Joe Conlon, PhD, technical advisor
to the American Mosquito Control Association. With 400 different compounds
to examine, it’s an extremely laborious
process. “Researchers are just beginning
to scratch the surface,” he says.
Scientists do know that genetics
account for a whopping 85% of our
susceptibility to mosquito bites. They’ve
also identified certain elements of our
body chemistry that, when found in excess on the skin’s surface, make mosqui-
over others? I am one of them. I
never have to use mosquito repellent.
My mom always says it’s because I’m
not sweet, but maybe there is more
to it..This may clear up the mystery.
toes swarm closer.
People with high concentrations
of steroids or cholesterol on their skin
surface attract mosquitoes. That doesn’t
necessarily mean that mosquitoes prey
on people with higher overall levels
of cholesterol, Butler explains. These
people simply may be more efficient at
processing cholesterol, the byproducts
of which remain on the skin’s surface.
Mosquitoes also target people who
produce excess amounts of certain acids,
such as uric acid, explains entomologist John Edman, PhD, spokesman for
the Entomological Society of America.
These substances can trigger the mosquitoes’ olfactory sensations, or sense
of smell, causing them to launch their
“landing” onto unsuspecting victims.
But the process of attraction begins
long before the landing. Mosquitoes can
smell their dinner from an impressive
distance of up to 50 meters.
“Any type of carbon dioxide is
attractive, even over a long distance,”
Conlon says. Larger people tend to give
off more carbon dioxide, which is why
mosquitoes typically prefer munching
on adults to small children. Pregnant
women are also at increased risk, as they
produce a greater-than-normal amount
of exhaled carbon dioxide. Movement
and heat also attract mosquitoes.
So if you want to avoid an onslaught of mosquito bites at your next
outdoor gathering, stake out a chaise
lounge rather than a spot on the volleyball team. Here’s why. As you run
around the volleyball court, the mosquitoes sense your movement and head toward you. When you pant from exertion,
the smell of carbon dioxide from your
heavy breathing draws them closer. So
does the lactic acid pouring from your
sweat glands. And then - gotcha.
With a long track record - mosquitoes have been around for 170 million
years - and more than 175 known species in the U.S., these shrewd summertime pests clearly aren’t going to
disappear any time soon. But you can
minimize their impact. Not having any
standing water around is critical. Even
an old bucket of water can become a
breeding ground for female mosquitos and itchy ground for you! For all
the health risks and benefits of insect
repellents make sure you pick up next
month’s issue! Until then I will make
my recommendation to purchase Cutter
Advanced...that seems to be the safest
and most effective kind I could find...

LOLLY
WALTON
For Lolly Walton,
nature is where her
heart is. She says
that she could be
happy painting birds
for the rest of her life
– she just wants to
do it well.
56 - Brevard Live August 2006
W
alton was born
in Milford,
Delaware, and
lived there until she
turned three. From
three years of age
until twelve, she
lived in Sylacauga,
Alabama. The long,
lazy summer days in
the south, filled with
nature, exploring the
outdoors or lazing
in the shade, shaped
her fondness for
birds, frogs, trees
-- anything in its
natural form and
environment. Her
paintings reflect the
beauty of those days.
After Alabama,
Walton moved to
Wilmington, Delaware, and lived there through high school.
One week after Walton graduated from high school, her
mother died. That tragedy defined her adult years. She felt
she had to pull herself out of the rubble, to invent a life for
herself. It taught her to stand on her own two feet in days long
before women were encouraged to do that. Walton knows that
the event could have conquered her, but she chose to make a
happy, positive life for herself — “To rise from the ashes,” as
she puts it. She has done a wonderful job of that.
After high school, Walton attended business school for
two years. She didn’t have time for art in those days. She
was busy making a life. She married Scott Walton, had her
daughter, Rebecca; and by 1977, the family moved to Miami.
She worked for Ryder System in the human resources area for
26 years. Part of her job was coordinating health and wellness
events. The skills she learned from those events have served
her well in the art world as she helps put together exhibits and
receptions for the various organizations she has joined.
While living in Miami, she and her husband had another
place in the Florida Keys where they enjoyed fishing and
boating. Her days in the keys added picturesque images to her
memory bank. When she took up painting, she found herself
drawing on those images for inspiration.
Walton didn’t take up painting until 1997. She started
by taking some art courses at Miami Dade Junior College.
She took drawing and watercolor painting lessons from
Jean Pateky. This was her start. She also took watercolor
instruction from Ricardo Aberle who teaches at Fairchild
Tropical Botanic Gardens in Coral Gables, Florida.
Walton joined the Miami Watercolor Society and became
involved with other painters. Caliope Polimus was one of
Walton’s mentors from those Miami days. She met her in a
watercolor class, and Polimus has inspired and encouraged
Walton every since.
Two years ago, Walton and her husband moved to
Brevard County. She is thrilled with her new home. She is
surrounded by what she likes best… the water, nature, and a
supportive art community.
Walton is a dynamo with a “Zest for Life” sign
flashing over her head. She finds art so satisfying that she
has boundless energy for it. Her feet had barely touched
the ground after moving here before she had joined the
Strawbridge Art League and became the hospitality chair for
that organization. She also joined the Brevard Watercolor
Society and is the current membership chairperson for that
group. She also was the co-chair of the Brevard Watercolor
Society’s show, Splash 2006. And, she also belongs to the
Florida Watercolor Society and has submitted a painting for
consideration for their annual show.
When asked why she chose watercolor as her medium,
Walton said, “Because it’s a challenge. The medium is so
unforgiving—you have to rise above it.” She didn’t shy from
this new challenge. After the rough start she had when her
mother died, she said that she is always up for the fight to
conquer what comes her way.
She is certainly succeeding at mastering the medium. She
depicts nature with a beautiful blend of colors that draw you
into the scene. Her paintings make you feel you could put
your feet up and enjoy one of those lazy, summer days with
her.
Walton regularly exhibits her work. She has had exhibits
at the government center through the Brevard Cultural
Alliance. She entered the Landmarks—Our Heritage exhibit
sponsored by the Strawbridge Art League and won a merit
award for her depiction of the Olden House.
This year she joined the Art and Antiques Studio Gallery
on Highland Ave in Eau Gallie. The gallery is a cooperative
where the artists display and sell their work. Walton attributes
her knowledge of the business end of art to the gallery.
On September 1st, 2006, the Art and Antiques Studio
Gallery will have a reception for Walton from 5:30p.m. until
8:30p.m. Her paintings will be featured for the month of
September in the gallery. The public is welcome to attend this
opening reception.
Walton’s advice to young mothers and those just starting
out is, “Be true to yourself. Pick something you love and
make it your avocation, so you’ll have something to fall back
on – so you’ll be able to leave your mark.” Walton has taken
her own advice. She pursues art eagerly, looking forward to
the next painting or the next thing she will learn from the art
and the people she meets through her art. It is a pleasure to
encounter someone who derives so much satisfaction from
what they do. Her energy is refreshing and contagious.
If you’d like to contact Walton, you can call her at the Art
and Antique Studio Gallery at (321) 253-5553 or at her studio

Guest Review & Signed Drawing By “Java” John Goldacker:
“Ringo’s All Starrs shine over Melbourne!”
T
he last (and only) time I had
seen Ringo was on the 4th
of July, 1984 - Mr. Starr had sat
in with the Beach Boys at a free
concert in South Beach (Miami),
singing the lead on the Beatles’
tribute to the Boys “Back in the
U.S.S.R.” (…flew in from Miami
Beach BOAC…), and drumming
on a twenty minute “Fun, Fun,
Fun” while the fireworks went off.
What a night! But not enough. So
ever since the first “All Starr Band
tour” in 1989, I swore I’d have to
go to one.
Well, over 15 years, and 9 tours
later, tonight I finally got my wish!
And right here at the King Center
in Melbourne, Florida too! And the
timing must have been right, because
our son Dylan was finally old enough
to really appreciate going (we both got
Ringo Peace & Love buttons for our
collections).
The last minute addition to the
tour (which sold out in minutes) was
an awesome 2 and a half hour romp
through the past 40 years of rock. Heavy
on classics by Ringo and the Fab-Four,
and hits by the other members of this
year’s “All Starrs” – Edgar Winter, Billy
Squire, Richard Marx, Shelia E, Hamish
Stuart (Average White Band), and
much to my delight Rod Argent (The
Zombies/Argent).
The anticipation had been building
for me all week, as I’ve been playing
Ringo on my radio show, with a special
tribute on his birthday (July 7th). So,
when I woke up today, I was ready. And
apparently, so Ringo and crew.
With a star laden stage, and a
deafening applause, the All Starrs took
to the stage, then welcomed Ringo
(chanting “What’s My Name??!”),
who kicked off with a raucous set of
“It Don’t Come Easy”, “What Goes
On” (which he pointed out was the
only Lennon/McCartney/Starkey
composition), and the rockabilly
58 - Brevard Live August 2006
“Honey Don’t”. Very kool. Then the
former Mr. Starkey announced it was
time for him to sit behind the drums,
and play behind his fabulous band
mates.
So the All Starrs got their chance to
show off, and none of them let us down!
First Ringo introduced Billy Squire,
who shouted – ‘Thank You Paul!’ then
kicked into “Everybody Wants You”,
and in turn welcomed Edgar Winter
(that’s when my son asked is he gonna
play Frankenstein?!...that’s my boy!).
Edgar gave us smoking version of
“Free Ride” (later, I told Dylan…).
Edgar then welcomed “the next
contestant” Sheila E. She stepped up
with a kick-ass “Love Bizarre” (dueling
with Ringo he quipped – “even in those
few moments, she played the drums
more then I did me whole life!”), and
he followed with The Beatles’ “Boys”.
Richard Marx gave us “Don’t Mean
Nothin’” and then introducing Rod
Argent (“…he’s not a bad kisser, for
a guy”) who then zapped us with The
Zombies “She’s Not There”. Yeah!
Ringo took center stage again with
“Never Without You” (a
tribute to George Harrison),
which was followed by the
audience singing “Happy
Birthday” to him. Ringo
said his thank you’s, but
mentioned he’ll “never tour
in July again – it’s been my
birthday all month” and
kicked into a sing-a-long
“Yellow Submarine”! Then
he said the next segment
would be solo time (though
no one played solo) starting
with Edgar’s (daddy…..)
beautiful long forgotten
classic “Dying to Live”,
and Richard’s equally
charming “Right Here
Waiting” (which my wife
Jen & son sang hugging).
Then, Winter strapped on the
keyboard (yes, son – now!)
“Frankenstein”! Whew, perfect – Edgar
played keys, drums, and sax all in one
song.
A few more by Ringo
“Photograph”, and the title track
from his newest CD, the very kool,
Beatlesque “Choose Love”. More hits
came- “Glamorous Life” (Sheila E.), “I
Wanna Be Your Man” (Starr), “Rock Me
Tonight” (Squire), then one of the show
stoppers for me, a very psychedelic
“Hold Your Head Up” by Rod Argent.
(By the way, after rehearsing and going
on the road with the All-Starrs, Argent
has decided to take The Zombies on the
road for the first time in 35 years!)
Winding down the night Ringo
got a little country on us with “Act
Naturally”, and “Memphis in Your
Mind”, then he thanked a woman for
being the lone lit bic lighter in the
house, and mentioned that the band did
not want to leave the stage (in other
words, give up the encore cheers, after
this we’re leaving), then finished with
an extra long, little ragged, but fun
“With a Little Help From My Friends”,
and it was over. What a FAB night!
