of fine pen shops is the largest
pen specialty retailer in Australia.
With three shops in Sydney, two
shops in Brisbane, one in Perth
city and a national online store.
The Pen Shoppe was founded in
Brisbane in 1980 by Bruce A.Nichol.
In 2002, The Pen Shoppe acquired
the Pen-Ultimate store in Miller
Street North Sydney. Then in 2004,
another Pen-Ultimate store was
opened in the landmark Queen
Victoria Building on Level 2. By
2007, the third Sydney store had
been opened in Chifley Plaza.
In 2006, Linda and her daughter
Katie Somers acquired T.Sharp & Co,
a century old business in Perth’s
Hay Street Mall & to the delight
of T.Sharp’s customers the store
has now been fully refurbished
and transformed into a classic
boutique for fine writing
instruments & Gifts.
In 2008, the www.pensdeluxe.com.au
online store officially launched.
This interactive showcase, which
is designed & managed in-house by
Carl Somers, serves as a universal
& truly unique online pen gallery
featuring the world‘s top brands.
Awarded a churchill fellowship in
1980, Barbara Nichol made a study
of the history of writing and is
one of Australia’s best known
Calligraphers and handwriting
authorities. Barbara is an expert
witness for the legal profession in
matters of questioned documents.

In 1924, Arnold Schweitzer
acquired the Ecridor Pencil
Factory in Geneva & created
the Caran d’Ache Swiss
Pencil Factory. In 1929, the
young company launched
the world's first all-metal
mechanical clutch pencil,
the Fixpencil. A year later
the first propelling hand
engraved Ecridor pencil models in gold & silver made
their debut. In 1953, the Ecridor ballpoint was launched.
In its eighty-three year history, Caran d’Ache has become
synonymous with creativity, refinement and excellent
quality. Caran d’Ache has in essence created its own
genre within the realm of fine writing instruments.
The Caran d’Ache company remains an independent
family enterprise with an international reputation.

Montblanc was founded in 1908
as the Simplo Filler Pen Company.
In 1913, the Montblanc “Star” become
the brand’s symbol. Mont Blanc, being
the highest European mountain, stood
for commitment to the highest quality
and finest European craftsmanship.
The Montblanc Meisterstuck,
launched in 1924 and would become
known as the world's most famous
and easily recognised writing
instrument. In 1934, the company
officially took the name, Montblanc
Simplo GmbH. Since the 1983, James
Bond 007 inspired “Octopussy pen”
Montblanc has continued to create
many other gorgeous limited editions.

Following his apprenticeship with the
master jeweller, Adolphe Picard, Louis
Francois Cartier founded his own
workshop in 1847 in Paris, giving birth
to the Cartier brand that would become
legendary. When Louis Francois himself
became a master jeweller, he gained
entry to the renowed Society of Guilds
allowing him to be commissioned by
the Royal Courts of Europe. Cartier
became know to jeweller to Kings,
king of jewellers.
By 1907, Alfred Cartier, son of Louis
Francois, entrusted the company to his
three sons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques,
who expanded into watchmaking and
the design and manufacture of fine
writing instruments, eyewear and
other accessories. In the early 20th
Century, the House of Cartier had
succeeded in reaching London, New
York, St. Petersburg and every other
corner of the globe.

was introduced to the fountain pen.
His long-time friend, a BritishSailor, demonstrated it to him.
Mr. Sakata was so intrigued by the

the finest writing instruments in the
world. In honor of his British
friend, he chose to name the
company Sailor Pen.
He was determined to produce
the most elegant and sophisticated

Lamy is a family-owned German company
established in 1930 by Carl Josef Lamy in
Heidelberg. During the tenure of his son
Dr. Manfred Lamy, the company was inspired
by the Bauhaus philosophy. Lamy stands for
innovation, functional design and with its
brand promise "No design writes better"
expresses the motto, “Form follows function”.

dialog 1 is a ball pen with a unique triangular
body created by German designer Richard Sapper.
dialog 2 is a capless rollerball using a twist-action
mechanism, designed by Dane Knud Holscher.
dialog 3 is a fountain pen created by Swiss
designer Franco Clivio. Dialog 3 represents the
third pen in a series developed over the last ten
years as a “dialogue” between Lamy and the
shared Bauhaus visions of these designers.
To write with the dialog 3 fountain pen, just twist
and the nib will slide elegantly out of the barrel
while the clip retracts into the body. Twist it closed
and the nib retracts, then a protective ball valve
automatically slides into place, protecting the nib.

In 1978, Yair Greenberg

much more colourful palette
than had previously been offered.

The creator of the modern day
fountain pen was Lewis Edson
Waterman, who founded his
company in New York in 1883.
His system was soon adopted
by all manufacturers of fountain
pens. In 1884, Waterman began
to advertise regularly in magazines.
The success of these advertising campaigns soon led
all of Waterman's friends to finance the opening of
the first true pen factory. An agreement was signed
with a company in New York which made gold nibs
and the “Ideal Pen Company” was created. In 1926,
Waterman’s French agent, invented the GIF ink cartridge.
Waterman today, is still committed to pursuing its
role as the creator of classically dreamy fountain pens.
