Where is it?
The state of Aguascalientes is located in the centre of
the Mexican Republic and borders to the north and west
Zacatecas and to the south east and south with Jalisco.
Its capital city is located 504 km away (313.17 miles) from
Mexico City.
History
On their arrival, the Spanish envoys made various expeditions and discovered a rich mining wealth in the area.
However, this was not a simple task since they had to
face the fierce nomadic Indian groups that inhabited the
región. It would not be until 1575 that they manage to
control the Indigenous uprisings and found the city of Villa
de nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguascalientes. At
the beginning of the 20th century, the state of Aguascalientes had become directly involved in the Revolutionary
struggle.

Attractions
The City of Aguascalientes
The city of Aguascalientes is divided into four districts:
Señor del Encino or de Triana, considered to be the most
Spanish; Guadalupe, in which the beautiful baroque
temple of Guadalupe was built; Salud, an area of orchards
and old Spanish houses and San Marcos, home to colonial
temples and the famous National Fair.
The Estación district can be added to these, which dates
for the Porfiriato (the era of Porfirio Díaz’s presidency in
the 19th century), which has beautiful residential buildings, among others.
Visitors can also enjoy the downtown area by horse
drawn carriage and visit the Aguascalientes, Guadalupe
Posada and the Contemporary Art museums, to mention
but a few.
Trams
The city has a legendary railroad tradition. Proof of this is
the beautiful 19th century, which today houses the “Tres
Centurias” The Old Train Station Complex.
To preserve the tradition, the authorities established
three tram routes along which guides explain the city’s
historical, artistic and cultural wealth. The routes are the
Aguascalentense, the San Marqueño and the Rielero.
Cristo Roto de San José de Gracia
The town was founded in 1675, but during the pre-Hispanic period there was a very important Chichimeca settlement. During the colonization, it became a picturesque
town full of folklore and traditions
The Cristo Roto Sanctuary was inaugurated in April
2006, whose image of Christ is 25 meters (82.02 ft) high.
It is situated on a small island on a reservoir and to visit
it, there is a launch service to take visitors to the sanctuary.
