The construction of the Cathedral took just over a century
(1575-1690), although for many years. After that, additional chapels and increasingly fine details were added. This
explains why the Cathedral became a showcase of architectural styles, though firmly based on the neoclassical.
The Cathedral interior houses 14 side chapels and the
main altar, known as the Altar of the Kings. All of the
altars are decorated with sculptures and paintings on
religious themes dating from the18th century.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Center of Incunables, the Palafox Library is also considered a Mexican
Historical Monument. It was established by Bishop Juan
de Palafox y Mendoza, who donated his 6,000 volume
personal library containing texts on theology, extinct
languages, philosophy, canon law, and other subjects. His
heritage became the richest in editions of all the spanish
America and “Nuremberg Chronicle” is the oldest volume
archived here, dating from 1493.
