You can understand why John Butts would feel proud. He is
one of only three Canadian anglers ever to win a Professional
Walleye Trail (PWT) tournament on the prestigious, big
money circuit. That puts the Sunset Country native in a
lofty class. So why is he feeling perplexed?

Indeed, the reason Butt's dotes on the uniquely weighted
line is it allows him to troll small crankbaits so effectively.
He is convinced that smaller cranks catch the attention of
walleye and fool them better than bigger baits. Especially
moody neutral and negative 'eyes. But the modest size lures
don't dive very deeply when dragged behind the boat using
conventional monofilament or braided line And
conventional weighting systems screw up their action.
With lead core line, though, he can present the lures to
walleye in depths he couldn't normally reach.
“Let's say I am fishing a shallow running, jointed Shad Rap
along a break in Lake of the Woods and the walleye are in
25-feet of water,” Butts says. “The most effective way to
reach them is with lead core. I can stay on the break
because lead core will follow the path of the boat. By
simply changing how much line I let out I can troll the
same crankbait across a shallow eight-foot deep flat or fish
out in open water for suspended walleye. Lead core line is
about absolute depth control.”
ABSOLUTE DEPTH CONTROL
While Butts carries eight outfits loaded with lead core line
in his boat at all times, he says the average recreational
walleye angler needs only a single level wind reel with a line
counter and a spool capacity large enough to hold 90- to
100-yards of the fairly bulky line. Add to that an 8- to 10foot long medium soft action trolling rod and you're in
business. Butts' only caution is to avoid using a rod that is
too stiff. Lead core line doesn't stretch so the long soft stick
acts like a shock absorber soaking up the head shakes from
large walleye, allowing you to fight the fish carefully
without the hooks wearing holes in their mouths and
popping free at the side of the boat.

Butts normally finishes off his outfits by tying on an 8-foot
long leader fashioned from 14-pound test Fireline. Like the
lead core, the Fireline doesn't stretch, so when the lines are
balanced against the soft properties of the rod, the tip
vibrates like crazy, relaying back every subtle nuance of the

In fact, living in the walleye heartland of Northwestern
Ontario's Sunset Country, where there is more water than
land, Butts often trolls with lead core line in small to
moderate size walleye lakes. And he favours the technique
in water as shallow as eight-feet deep.
Which brings us back to Butts' penchant for using an
eight-foot long leader. It seems short. But there is method
to his madness. Because the lead core/Fireline combination
is so incredibly responsive you can wobble a crankbait
within inches of the bottom - even intentionally scratch it
if you prefer - and not constantly be hanging up and losing
expensive lures.

Butt's is also quick to explode two myths about fishing for
walleye with lead core line. Because it is so enormously
effective in famous walleye palaces like the Bay of Quinte
and Lake Erie, many anglers mistakenly think that it is
suited only for the Great Lakes and deep water. That is
simply not the case.
lure. If it picks up even the slightest piece of debris, a leaf
or stalk of weed, you will see the tip dampen or stop
vibrating. When a walleye whacks the lure, on the other
hand, it is like a mouse trap snapping shut. You'd have to
be asleep to miss the bite.

“Once you learn how to troll with lead core line,” Butts
says, “you'll use it more than any other system. You can
better control the depth of your lures because when you
slow down or speed up, lead core line doesn't react
instantly. It takes time for it to adjust to the new speed.
Snap weights, bottom bouncers and in-line sinkers have a
tendency to react immediately. So if you slow down, they'll
crash to the bottom if you are not careful.”
When you see via your rod tip that you're courting disaster,
however, simply adjust your speed, increasing it slightly
and hop the lure away from the snag. A short leader will
respond to the burst of energy more rapidly than a long
one. It will also follow the path of the lead core line that is
tracking your boat like a heat seeking missile during
normal trolling passes. So following a contour line is
hassle-free. Bottom line: stick with a short leader whenever
the conditions dictate it. In fact, you can shorten it up even
further - to as little as four feet long - when you're trolling
in dark, stained or dirty water.
And don't think you are going to outsmart Butts by
beefing up the strength of the leader either. Fourteenpound test Fireline is the same diameter as six-pound test
monofilament so you wobble your lures with it effortlessly.
And on the rare occasions that you do hang up it is better
to break the leader than the lead core.
THREE - TWENTY - FIVE
Amongst all the details and mysteries that Butts has sorted
through in his quest to master lead core trolling for Lake of
the Woods walleye, however, none is as brilliant as the rule
book he has developed for knowing precisely how much
line to let out to reach the fish.
“There's an easy rule to follow,” says Butts, acknowledging
that for years many professional walleye anglers tried to
keep the tactic a secret, using what they referred to as
segmented lead core to hide the fact they were using it at
all. They spliced various short lengths of the lead core into
the middle of their regular monofilament trolling outfits.
“If you are trolling two miles an hour with three colors or
90-feet of lead core line out, your bait will be in 20-feet of
water. It doesn't matter if you're using a big, small or
medium size crankbait. After that, for every color of lead
core line that you let out your lure will dive down another
five feet. So if you let out seven colors your bait will be
down forty feet deep.”
Listening to Butts talk about how he controls the depth of
his lures with lead core line is like being tutored by Wayne
Gretzky on taking a slap shot or Tiger Woods on reading a
green and sinking a difficult putt. It becomes even more
evident when Butts explains how he modifies the rules

leader - made of fluorocarbon or monofilament because the
water is crystal clear and the walleye are extraordinarily
spooky - Butts says you first need to take into account his
primary lead core rule. But then add in the additional depth
the lure will dive if it was being trolled behind 50-feet of
line. The easiest way to do this is by consulting the lure's
dive curve in Mark Romanack's, Precision Trolling, a guide
Butts calls “the walleye troller's bible”.
WHERE, WHEN AND WHY
When you've spent as much time as Butts has perfecting his
lead core walleye fishing system, it comes as no surprise to
hear him say there is no time of year, no body of water and
no weather condition that deters him from trolling for
walleye. Especially with his beloved little crankbaits. The
fish love the lures and he has such an abiding faith in them
that he believes he can catch walleye with them anywhere
and at anytime. His favourites are Reef Runner Little
Rippers, #4 and #5 Glass and Jointed Shad Raps and Cotton
Cordell Walleye Divers.
Still, there are two situations that scream out to Butts to
work his magic. The first is when he finds walleye scattered
across an extensive flat. It could be along a shoreline, in a
bay or cove or the plain atop an extensive underwater point,
shoal, reef or bar. The structure and depth don't matter as
long as the bottom is relatively flat.

The other ideal situation is when Butts finds walleye
suspended in the water column. The fish might be relating
to light levels, water temperature or schools of pelagic forage
fish. Again, the reasons don't matter. What counts is that
the fish are spread out across a horizontal plane and thus,
susceptible to trolling small cranks. Then, Butt's calls lead
core line his “go to tactic”.
So what are the drawbacks to using the stuff? After all, if
hardly anyone is using it, it must be for good reason. If it is,
Butts is darned if he can figure it out. He scans his brain
bank searching for at least some pseudo weaknesses before
almost happily saying that when you're letting out the line,
it is important to do it slowly because lead core has a
tendency to over spool, tangle and make a mess. You don't
want to put a twist in lead core line either, so if you're using
lures that spin, crawler harnesses, for example, be sure to put
a quality snap swivel at the end of your leader. But that is
about the best he can come up with.
“I really don't know of any negatives with lead core,” Butts
says almost apologetically. “I love it. It is my favourite way
to fish for walleye. Maybe I am just too positive.”
Maybe, but then again, only one other Canadian walleye
angler has matched what Butts has been able to accomplish.

For those who have
traveled in the rugged and

beautiful country that

surrounds the Lake of the
Woods, the City of Kenora
can come as quite a
surprise. Nestled in a
glorious sweep on the north
shore of the Lake of the
Woods, Kenora is vibrant
slice of city life, culture,
and bustle that has
somehow, almost
miraculously been
transported into a pristine
wilderness setting.
Kenora is rich in history and culture. From the voyageur fur
trade routes, a frontier village known as Rat Portage (reference
to the muskrat) sprang up. The voyageur canoe routes were
followed by a network of land trails that developed into roads
and in the mid 1880’s, the railroad. This brought industry to
Rat Portage including logging, saw mills, gold mines, and
flour milling. In 1905, the village fathers decided a name
change was needed as more businesses arrived – and they chose
the name KENORA – KE from their sister town of Keewatin,
three miles to the west, NO from the village of Norman also
just west, and RA from Rat Portage. Kenora’s unique past is
narrated through 21 murals painted on buildings, many of
which are historic, throughout the city’s core.

The site of the Sioux Narrows bridge, was the site of a famous
Native battle and massacre between the local Cree and Ojibway
tribes against the Sioux. The aggressive and dominating Sioux
were secretly ambushed and defeated by the Cree and Ojibway
at the narrows, hence the name Sioux Narrows.
A new bridge was completed in 2007 to replace the original
wooden bridge that was once the longest single span wooden
bridge in the world. With its signature wooden trusses
incorporated into the design, the new bridge preserves the look

and professionals. Gift shops often display racks of books
and guides featuring local nature interests.
So with your nature pack packed, there will be plenty for
the family to explore. Soon you will begin to see the trees
rather than the forest, and the lily pads rather than the
marsh.
It’s a wonderful world here in Lake of the Woods country,

Everybody has a tale to tell
after a fishing trip.
Unfortunately, for the excited
storyteller, not everybody
wants to hear about 'the one
that got away'.
But, ears will always perk-up
when they unexpectedly hear
the line, “Yeah, one of my
casts almost ripped Sam's ear
off!” This becomes the story
everybody wants to hear.
Surprisingly, being impaled by a fishhook, big or small, can
be a regular occurrence in any fishing centre like Kenora,
Ontario. It's just one of those places in which thousands of
fishermen travel to each year that offers them equal
opportunities to hook the big one or just themselves.
A quick visit to the Lake of the Woods District Hospital will
give any fishermen a hundred reasons to be more careful
around their lures.
Before entering the hospital's emergency waiting room,
prospective patients come upon an unusual display case.
Most people just get a good chuckle from it. Serious
fishermen might see it as a 'Hall of Shame.' But, the
emergency room nurses who created it view it as their own
'Hall of Fame'- a shrine of lures they removed from
fishermen's hands, scalps, ears, legs and butts.

have been filling it ever since.”
“We really thought it was a cool idea,” said Judy Carlson, a
longtime emergency room nurse. “I don't think it's done
anywhere else.”
The display case has been a fixture in the hospital's
emergency waiting room for over 15 years. There is a steady
supply of lures every year, so they now only put in the best
of the bunch. A few more musky lures and the case will start
bursting from its seams.
Each lure is the case has a story.
“There is no body part that is sacred from a fish hook,” said
Lynn Mychalyshyn, a former emergency room nurse who
treated many an unfortunate fisherman.
During the summer months when fishing is at its peak, a
doctor in the emergency might remove two to three hooks a
day. People come great distances for treatment. They come
by car, boat, floatplane or helicopter. The hospital, situated
right on the water, even boasts its own dock.
Unlike the stories fishermen tell the hospital's admitting
nurse, the display case had a very simple beginning.
“It all started out as a plastic bin at the nursing station with

“A family had a cottage here. Their little girl was about four
and was told dad's tackle box was forbidden territory. But,
she was exploring one day and got caught on a treble hook.
The brother, who was about six, thought he would help to
get the hook out and no one would have to know it had
happened. Unfortunately, he too got entangled in the
hook.”
“So, mom left the cottage with the two children and a little
dog. In the drive from their cottage from Clearwater Bay
into Kenora the dog also got hooked on this hook.”

“These two children literally walked into our department
with their hands clasped together by the hook (looking like
they were nicely holding hands) and the mother stood
between them carrying, and supporting the dog. To our
amazement she said they were all on the same hook.”
Sometimes though, good things come about by getting
impaled by a hook.
“A guide who got a fish hook caught in himself came to the
hospital with his client. While he was waiting to have the
fishhook removed, the client, the paying customer, went
down to the hospital dock with his fishing gear. He was just
casting out into the bay to pass the time. Well, he snagged
himself a trophy sized musky.”
Most fishermen receive little sympathy from their friends.
“Even if their fishing partner was the one who hooked them,
they usually just drop them off and come back later to pick
them up,” said Carlson. “They don't want to waste fishing
time sitting in a hospital. Some will leave the hook in all day
and come in after the fishing is done.”
Hooks in hands, legs, scalps and butts are usually the
simplest removal procedures. Some 'bush doctors', namely
the lodge owners, have learned hook removal techniques
over the years. This way they don't have to transport guests
into town every time they hook themselves.
Everybody gets concerned when it involves eyes, & do
whatever they have to do to seek immediate medical attention.
“I think eyes are the scariest because vision is so valuable to
us,” said Mychalyshyn. “I remember a situation when a
hook was cut off by a patient prior to coming in. It was
hooked into their eyelid. The hook was cut too short and
actually worked its way through the lid into the area around
the eye. Floating around inside the eye socket. This person
ended up going to Winnipeg to a plastic surgeon to have it
removed.”
“We had a little girl out fishing with her dad. A fishhook got
caught right under the bottom lid of her eye. The dad was
just sick. She was about five,” said Carlson. “We were all
wondering what we were going to do. Then, she just rolled
her eye to the side and it fell out. It could have been quite
traumatic for the child. Her dad was still in a state of shock
after it fell out.”
With the popularity of the lure display case the people at the
hospital don't want it to become a status symbol with
people wanting their misfortunes on display. They just want
people to have fun with it.
“There are people who actually have seen it at one point,
and come back to show their out-of-town friends,” said
Carlson.
In the coming years the display case is bound to grow as the
fisherman do the unthinkable and hook into themselves, not
the fish, unexpectedly giving them an experience they are
bound to tell anybody who will listen. – Rick Brignall

CROSSING THE BORDER
U.S. visitors to Canada will be asked to verify their citizenship
upon returning to the United States. U.S. citizens entering the
United States at sea or land ports of entry are required to have
documents that comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel
Initiative (WHTI), most commonly a passport, a passport card, a
trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST, or an
enhanced driver's license.
Citizens of other countries must have a valid passport and may
require a visitor visa.
If you have a felony or misdemeanor arrest (i.e. DWI/DUI ), you
should contact Canada Customs at least one year prior to your
arrival.
If traveling with children, be sure to have identification for ALL
children (i.e. birth certificate, baptismal certificate or passport).
Children traveling with someone other than a legal guardian should
have written permission from their legal guardian or custodial parent.
When traveling with only 1 parent, you should have written
permission from the other parent to take the child out of the country.
Dogs and cats entering Canada from the US must be accompanied
by a valid rabies certificate, signed and dated by a Veterinarian
issued within the preceding 36 months. The certificate must
provide a sufficient description and detail, in order to identify the
pet. Pups and kittens under three months old do not require a
certificate but must be in good health at the time of entry. Visitors
from countries other than the US, who wish to bring a pet into
Canada, should contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency at
(905) 612-6285.
BAIT
Frozen or salted minnows are allowed. Live earthworms are
permitted, but only when packed in artificial bedding (no earth or
soil). It is illegal to bring live fish, crayfish, live leeches, salamanders
or other live creatures intended for bait into Ontario regardless of

You may bring a hunting rifle or shotgun into Ontario for hunting

The Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive Program (FCTIP)
gives non-resident consumers that purchase “tour packages” a
rebate of 1/2 of the paid Goods & Services Tax (GST). To be
eligible the GST charged must be at least $12 and the non-resident
must have paid a deposit of at least 20% of the total price at least
14 days before the first day of accommodation. This tour package
is for short-term accommodations with at least one service sold for
an all-inclusive price. Please talk to your tourism operator to
determine if you are eligible for this rebate.
GOODS YOU MAY BRING INTO CANADA
Visitors to Canada may bring certain goods as “personal baggage”,
duty and tax free, provided all such items are declared to Customs
upon arrival, and are not subject to restriction.
• A reasonable amount of personal items, supply of food (for
personal use) and a full tank of gas.
• Gifts not exceeding $60 Cdn for a friend/relative in Canada. This
does not include tobacco products, alcohol or advertising material.
Gifts valued at more than $60 Cdn are subject to duty.
• Up to 40 oz liquor or 1.5 litres wine or 24X12 oz bottles/cans beer
• Up to 1 carton of cigarettes and 50 cigars and 1 – 200 g can of
tobacco and 200 tobacco sticks.
You must be 19 years of age to import alcohol and tobacco
products into Ontario. Any additional amounts of alcohol and
tobacco, other than listed, are subject to duty. There are import
limits with regards to beer and alcohol - 5 cases of beer; 45 litres of
alcohol. These are the maximum allowable amounts without a
